In November, Geert Wilders, a far-right politician, won the Dutch general election, indicating a severe U-turn over the immigration policy. Moreover, with many politicians disagreeing with his policies, a government formation is proving to be difficult. So, in this video, we're going to look at how Dutch attitudes at immigration have changed over the years, and how the next Dutch government may look like.

It's a misrepresentation to say that Wilders cannot form a government. Formations in the Netherlands have always taken several months, the average length since WW2 being 103 days. The previous formation even lasted 299 days. If he had formed a government already, he would have been considered very quick. If he does it before the end of February, he would still be faster than average. Again, this information is very easily accessible online...

"Assimilated multiculturalism" seems to be what the majority of Europeans really want, rather than the creation of significant parallel societies that do not integrate or interact with the mainstream society, or do not even respect the basic values of a tolerant liberal democracy. It's this lack of integration that's seriously poisoned the well on immigration.

A heavy accusations that immigrants are the ones with no respect for democracy, considering far right nativist groups throughout Europe have, over the past few years, manipulated legal loopholes in multiple countries to attack human rights and gain unjust lasting control in multiple governments, assaulted and removed laws and protections once considered nearly sacred in their power grabs, and when anyone has truly defeated them in free democratic elections they act violently and at times attempt actions such as assassination, intimidation, or attempt using the legal systems they manipulated to prevent elected governments from acting to stop their corruption

I used to support immigration, but i live close to Ter Apel, My countries largest refugee center... the amount of stabbings, arson, robberies, sexual assaults and vandalism made me turn to the PVV. A friend of mine her bike was stolen once, the police literally told us to check if it's at a refugee center, if not we could go back... we encounter two other people there looking for their stolen bikes and guess what? we all found them... It has become so bad that bus drivers refuse to stop near bus stops close to refugee centers due to the high amount of stabbings and sexual assault done bey refugees to other passengers in broad daylight... When i was a college teacher the school i worked at pooled the security with 2 local high schools so they could patrol all the way from the school property up until the train and bus station after a series of incident with refugees bothering girls from the schools (some as young as 13) with sexual remarks and threats... PVV's victory is not a surprise, it's a necessity.

When reporting on immigration, it's important to give a bit more context. The amount of immigrants is made up of different groups. For 2022, the 61% increase of immigrants compared to 2021 was due to increases in more than one of these groups. There was an increase of asylum seekers (+33%), but also the arrival of 104.000 Ukrainian refugees, more international students and highly skilled migrants (kennismigranten). In the meantime, 179.000 people migrated out of the Netherlands, resulting in a net positive of 224.000. Just sharing this for others to get the full picture.

Hi, Dutchie here! The past few years people have really started to notice the leniency around the pressure of integration if it comes to migrants. The call for migration workers from other places within the EU, together with the lax immigrationlaws for people outside of the EU that find The Netherlands attractive to settle down in, has noticeably made the place less... Dutch. The Netherlands has always been a country with a high English proficiency, but it seems that English is now becoming the go-to language in many places, including shops and cafe's. This in combination with the higher frequency of encounters of wrong-willing foreigners in big cities has pushed more people towards nationalism and a distaste for immigrants. As said, we have always been a hub for multiculturalism, but at least the immigrants of that time felt the need to adapt to the Dutch customs in some form. Now, to many Dutch people it feels like we are simply being overrun by foreigners, rather than feeling the obligation to harbor people who look for better lives.

As a Dutchman I have to say you're only explaining part of it. Just immigrants coming to the Netherlands on it's own wouldn't be an issue, so why is it? There's currently a housing crisis going on in the Netherlands, but for some reason housing can be found for immigrants, but not for citizens. Besides that there are a lot of immigrants that are just plain criminals. So we're housing criminals that come from another country, but we don't have any housing for our own citizens, obviously something has to change and we're hoping Wilders will bring us that change, since it doesn't look like anyone else will.

The housing crisis is ridiclously complex and it cannot be described as ¨housing can be found for immigrants, but not for citizens.¨ Housing cannot be found for immigrants, they cant be found for anyone within the middle and lower classes. The immigrants that do possess a proper house are often those that come here working for the multinationals and benefit from the expat tax cut. That group isn't that big to successfully hijack the housing market. If you want to include the Ukrainian refugees that came here as a problematic group that has found housing as opposition to Dutch folk you would have point. A lot of effort went in to help the Ukrainian people to settle here, either by guest families or old buildings that were scheduled to be demolished. The dreaded ´asylum seekers´ arent even 20 percent of the total immigration numbers and only 8 per cent of the ones which have received asylum have access to social housing.

I lived over a decade in NL, now back in the UK. I think there are problems there but at least they are not afraid to call a spade a spade there, whereas people in the UK like to virtue signal by putting foreigners and anything foreign on a pedestal, plus being afraid that just saying things like ''this is how we do things in the UK'' are seen as ''racist''. I've lived in a few other countries too - Germany, Austria, Spain, South Africa - and there it was completely normal and even helpful of people there to tell you about their customs and quirks and of course it was normal and expected that one would adhere to or at least respect those.
The lack of integration in the UK and the imposition of others' values, or lack of people speaking out when others don't respect our values, is probably the worst in Europe. I live in a residential area of London and when I walk 15 mins through the park to my supermarket, 80% of the conversations I hear, whether on the phone or in person, are not in English. Where in the Netherlands - except of course for the tourist infested parts of central Amsterdam - would you walk down the street and 80% of people are speaking languages other than Dutch? For more context. The Netherlands has approximately 17,671,000 inhabitants start 2024. In 2023 net 224.000 people immigrated in. That's an increase of 1.26% by immigration alone in a single year.
Let's say we house these people in 4-person family units. That's 56.000 entry level family homes that would've needed to be built last year. We build in total about 70.000 new houses in 2023. This however is of all kinds and not just entry level homes, but a mix of social, mid-range, rental, luxury, etc.
To boot we already had a shortage of 303.00 houses, which as a result has increased to 317.000. (Assuming the 4-person family unit that's
That means, 17,671,000 inhabitants (17.9% of total pop) of the Netherlands can't get a home. That means almost 1 in 5 people. Despite having money. Can't get a home because there's no home to buy/rent.
I'm Center left politically. But even I can see that we just can't accept more people.
For political context: these problems have been the direct result of the VVD. Whom directly cut home building funds in favor for funding office/corperate building, in the last year Premier Balkenende (VVD) was leading the government.
The VVD was also central in forming the immigration policies that have led us to the current problems. Having been at the helm (with exclusively center-right wing coalitions, we've not seen a left party in a coalition since premier Kok.) for the past 20 years.

I’ve lived in the Netherlands for the past five years (and not really planning to stay) and it’s very clear to me that the Dutch culture and language are slowly dying, especially in bigger cities or even towns. Even when I came in 2018 things weren’t as bad, but now, especially when you add the fact that the costs of living and rent are rising and not slowing down, no wonder a guy like Wilders was getting more and more popular. Nothing against Muslims or immigrants, as I am one myself technically, but the Netherlands is no longer Dutch lol.

The western world has had too much migration and it's time to call a halt to anyone but Ukrainians in Europe who need temporary permission to enter with the understanding that they return to Ukraine. ...it should be that no migrants of incompatible cultures are accepted. No matter how harsh it may sound, i would also say that Western values also include low birth rate rate and migrants should have to pledge that they will restrict their family to replacement numbers. As far as i can see, that should be adopted as a mission statement around the world. Though some will say that's wrong, it is is only common sense and if the world had done this several decades ago, we would be in much better shape ! Mr. Wilders, on the immigration issue, is spot on .

I came here more than 5 years ago. I passed an integration exam, and I speak moderate Dutch (even though English is my favorite language, and I have an English speaking job). It's sure enough. No one wants to be assimilated or to look "very Dutch".

The only viable way to reduce migration is by passing laws against exploitation of migrant workers (this should be done anyway), which means that employers won't attract as many migrants. This is not right-wing policy however, especially not BBB- or VVD-policy, because their voters profit of of this exploitation

These are statistically significant amounts of certain groups. Not all groups and not everyone in those groups, but high-enough numbers to warrant a targeted approach.
By being too general in our statements we make it harder to solve the problems and it is growing year over year.

At this moment in the Netherlands there is a housing crisis. Assylum seekers get prioritized for low income housing over dutch people. International students get prioritized over dutch students for student housing.
Expats are brought in by large companies and banks for high paid jobs, many of them don't rent but actually buy houses. You see dutch double income couples losing bidding wars on real estate.
Lower income workers are brought in from eastern european companies for "jobs nobody wants to do". They live under inhumane circumstances and lately you even see them ending up homeless and living in tents.
The pressure on infrastructure, health care and education is huge and the prices for health care (insurance), education and taxes are rising fast. Different type of migrants (students, expats, assylum seekers, illegal immigrants etc.) are making use of these systems while contributing (in general) less or even nothing at all.
It is inhumane, unfair and unsustainable and most dutch people ackknowledge that, in silence, because openly talking about these things get you in hot waters real fast.

In 2004 Wilders LEFT the VVD but kept his chair in the Eerste Kamer, so basically became a temporary 1 man faction, after the new elections end of 2006 he got 5.9% of the votes with his party the PVV, he was not expelled.
And actually forming a coalition is not slow, average time in the Netherland is 103 days, this formation is currently at 61 days and this includes the normal christmas recess of 24 and of course many parties that are trying to stall formation.
As to why the Netherlands soured in Immigration, there are many reasons, but I think this number should be taken into account before anything else, in 2022 the poluation of the Netherlands grew to 17.811.291 from 17.587.270 of the year before, more people died than were born so this increase in based solely on immigration and this means the population grew by 1,27% due to immigration in 1 year.
On big thing would be we have a major shortage of residences (about 390.000 short) and in 2022 84000 new residences were created, immigration in 2022 was 403.108, emigration was 179.310 so 223.798 more incoming than leaving, those people need to live somewhere and often are given priority.
The new recidences will not cover the net migration, so how would you ever solve the housing shortage driving up rent and housing prices, not saying the fault is solely on immigration, but solving such an issue (created by the VVD btw) is hardly possible with such an immens net immigration.
Another is troubles caused by Asylum seekers (which are not included in immigration number until they are allowed to stay) and high crime rate amongst asylum seekers and sadly immigrants as a whole.
Well of course there's many more, to much to list here, reasons (costs is a big one aswell) but we could say this has been going on for years, the issues increase each year and because the political system never bothered to adress them the dutch population had enough and the result was the elections as we see them now.
Note PVV is always depicted as far right, but only there immigration policy is far right, if you would ignore that part they might even be discribed as central or even left wing.
And possibly interesting fact, if new election would come now the polls say PVV would get about 1/3th of all votes.

Simple, years and years of mass immigration from groups that are wildly different on a cultural level to the Dutch population, who don't learn the language, don't adopt Dutch values, don't make any sort of effort to integrate. Then society moves from one where people can happily live side by side knowing the share the same language, cultural values, religious beliefs, history, etc. to one where the original inhabitants see the decay of that society and the country just becomes less pleasant to live in. Anyone who says this is a surprise is an idiot at best. The immigration issue has been massive for years, with successive governments promising to decrease the levels and change things, to then do nothing of the sort. You can replace 'Dutch' with any European nationality really.

it is a little ironic that when it comes to immigration the UK were ahead of the curve on wanting to control it, but 10 years ago the rest of Europe it was a fundamental part of the EU. Now half the EU wants to drastically restrict or completely overhaul the process.

there is a difference between taking in immigrants and helping them settle and integrate themselves vs taking in immigrants, housing them in 4-5star hotels and literally paying them to stay without taking a single job. the EU does not say "take immigrants and sustain them financially for free". it's each country's responsibility to integrate them into the work force.
also, the UK showed a lot of racism towards all immigrants, those that came for social benefits as well as those that actually had jobs and tried to settle down. because "they were taking jobs from the brits", but the brits did not want said jobs nor worked as hard as the immigrants did.
lastly, notice how even now, UK has a problem with immigration even when outside the EU. so leaving the EU was not the solution, was it?

"10 years ago it was fundamental part of the EU"
"Now half the EU wants drastic restrictions "
Well no. 10 years ago it was not fundamental EU policy.
10 years ago EU was split in 2 with half wanting a Hella more restrictions... The whole east of EU certainly did.
The policy was pushed by western EU.
It's litteraly why so many Anti EU sentiments grew in the East...

it has always been fundamental EU policy. Only now more countries are starting to ignore it because the problems are so acute. Not saying its right or wrong - just saying its interesting that something once so "ironclad" is now a matter to be overlooked. Brexit would have been very different if Europe had the attitude they do today. @@tomasvrabec1845

What the Dutch didn’t realise was that all the religions they allowed into the Netherlands were not all March the same. One religion stands out as very very different, and it has a book which teaches its followers to destroy all who refuse to obey it, among many other horrors.

Immigration at the levels that developed economies are seeing is unsustainable under the best circumstances. The fact that a huge, huge number of immigrants practice an ideology that is incompatible with the countries they have moved to and feel they have the right to takeover certainly makes the issue much worse. Many countries are going to find they will need to fight civil wars to regain their identities. The wealthy; through the WEF, the EU, and the UN; have knowingly created this issue and have to be held accountable, as do the politicians who've been bought. there needs to be removal of the corporate socialism (the newish national socialism) from government and bureaucracy at all levels.

I agree with you, except for the part about the civil wars.
Getting people to fight and start civil wars is part of the WEF plans. That's what they aim for in order to have the excuse of that "violence" to call in the armies, so they can legally kill the uprising people, after which there will be no longer be any real resistance to the WEF. Klaus Schwab himself said so, laughing.

The same as in Belgium. It has too many political parties and no party can win an outright majority at the election. As a result, it is always governed by a coalition government and can never agree on any important political decisions, e.g. immigrants, that are right for the country. If you are walking in central Brussels, you would think that you are walking on the street of Casablanca.

I don't think Wilder's winning is such a shock because I think it was going to happen eventually. He broke through the soft ceiling of being new, radical, toxic anti-establishment candidate around 2007-2010 period and for the past 15 or so years has been one of the largest parties in Netherlands. He was always going to get a win eventually, it was always impossible to keep him out permanently.

It was very well possible for establishment to keep Wilders out. Simply if they were even a little bit functional in governing our country, which they proved not to be at all. The establishment chose to double down on a few important matters, despite those matters going rather poorly and causing problems. Quite typical for an establishment that is too elitist from the common man.
