I saw this one tweet where this person was like "Darker skinned people should have more representation, but redrawing characters that are not dark skinned to be dark skinned is not the way to go about it" and I wholeheartedly agree
I am south east asian and I have naturally darker skin, because science decided that my skin needs more melanin since I loved playing outdoors as a kid, and it's summer all year long. But I guess, I am blackwashing if I even wanted a dark skinned asian representation 🥲 I understand that this is case by case situation that I shouldn't generalised, but c'mon man, Japan has Gyaru concept and what not, colorism really depends on how *their culture* perceived it, not what Western History sobbed about 🤷♀️
I remember there was an artist on TikTok who drew ATLA characters in their art style, but was then bombarded with comments saying “Katara is too light!” and “Sokka isn’t dark enough!”. The artist had to make another video with them using an eyedropper to select the skin colors straight from an ATLA episode just to prove they weren’t in the wrong. I fucking hate these people.
It's not dumb, it's deliberate and evil, they are basically satanists, or whatever similar adjective you are comfortable using. They are not harmless, nor are they few, with the backing of powerful institutions and companies they are threatening our existence and way of life.
The fact that they have the "it's ok/it's wrong when it's a certain race..." double standard alone means they just played themselves by perfectly explaining a racist mindset.
I enjoyed mocking these people, I meant like yeah the characters I significantly enjoy are meant to be children in my head but that doesn't mean I'm a danger to children. I am not the typical case so you got to be pragmatic when studying someone like me.
yea.... i hate how they overreact so much. some dude on reddit posted a japanese fan art of lifeline from apex legends. the artist made her skin lighter than she is.... you had to read the comments. their over reaction to a drawing was ridiculous. telling the artist isbeing a racist, to harass him and shame him. so i asked this people " you know you could ask nicely to the artist to please paint her with her real skin color, instead of going in this huge wall shaming the artist when you dont know the person at all in the first place ?. i got downvoted and shadowbanned.

@@FZJanimated Oh damn that's way worse than I expected, glad I steered away from twitter, seems like the toxicity level is very high especially for artists, which sucks since "woke" people suddenly appeared and now attacking people who draw characters slightly white
There’s nothing constructive about Twitter. All these people do is tear down others and try to antagonize others if they have different opinions. These are the same people that always get offended for black folks and when most black folks aren’t even offended in the first place. These people treat my race as if we’re toddlers. It really upsets me seeing another artist being accused of racism for not drawing a character black enough.
don't say "westerners", say "shit people on twitter". we asians have a bunch of good AND bad habits, practices, and ways of doing things, westerners are the same as well. the best way is to combine both good things from both sides!
we have a bunch of people in the west who have had too easy of lives and want to complain about privilege while also feeling entitled to whatever they want.
If you actually been around alot of Japanese people or any other east Asians, you would know that we have a wide range of skin color. Some people could be extremely pale while another could be really tan just like the girl on the video. We get tanned easily out in the sunlight without even having to try, and then get pale again in a month lol. And no, most of the people dont even have to use whitening cream or go to a tanning salon to do this. All of this could be done naturally just by staying inside or outside of your house. If this is somewhat “racist” to westerners, its their problem for not accepting what our bodies can naturally do.
bruh!!! I am half Japanese and uh my mom is darker my dad is pale... I'm naturally pale but I tan just sitting by a window! I think people forget that most Asians easily tan or have a different kind of melanin response

Though 🤔 Cannon busters was an anime with prominently black characters and tbh it was fire. I agree that Japanese aren't used to black people but times are changing and with regular access to the internet its pretty easy to see people of color. Like I think that show proves that black characters do translate well into the anime medium, which used to be an old agreement people used to use "Oh well Japanese dont know how darker skin tones will look with anime style" but its clearly possible. Like I'm not gonna sit here and complain that every anime i watch dosen't have people of color but honestly, its nice to representation. Because as it turns out the "target audience" isnt just Japanese people anymore, there's a reason why it gets translated to so many different languages, because there's demand.
Feel you. It's actually part of the reason why I stopped watching anime. I learned a lot about how blacks in general are perceived in East Asia. Instead, I've focused my time to watch a lot of shows targeted more specifically to an African American audience, such as 'Atlanta,' 'The Boondocks', and 'Wu Tang: An American Saga.' I hope more people of color can create more fleshed out works aimed at our target audience without having to blackwash any other existing forms of media. Would be super cool.

@@sadness5161 well, the best thing you can do is question the narrative. Question your fellow black brothers and sisters. Question their world view until they start to question it themselves.
As a black person myself I always found it weird when people would make non black characters black especially when usually those same people always get upset when a character or some work is so-called whitewashed, and it has always annoyed when people or companies try to force representation in something to appease people that form of representation just comes off as fake to me, if you want a black superhero hire a black artist to make a new hero and they'll probably make it black because that's what they know instead of making Superman black or make your own new black character. People to stop trying to force representation in things they love and instead love more the things they feel represent them then they won't feel the need to complain.
I've always felt this forced representation would be much more dehumanizing than anything. When you think about it, they're treating your race and your entire people as a gimmick. Just throw a black guy into a cast of characters and have him on display. "Look at our black guy. We're not racist because we represent black people in our story" Meanwhile, the character may or may not even add anything to the story or plot but it's representation cuz they have their -token- black character, regardless of any meaning to it. The actual "character" part doesn't matter, just that they're black When people force black characters into everything and their race is the only thing that matters, is that not just a more sophisticated form of the classic "I'm not racist cuz I have a black friend" argument?
This reminded me of a new tv drama and how they got a black actress to play Anne Boleyn- a famous historical WHITE figure.. I still can't believe it, it don't make sense!!..
People who celebrate tokenized hand me down characters are clowns. Such characters are an insult to everyone. It insults the fans of the original character, and it definetely insults the targeted minority because it basically says:" minority characters aren't good enough to stand on their own, so we better take this established character and just change his skin color" Those virtue signaling clowns want to pretend like they care about minorities yet they ignore actual great characters in favor of race bending white ones and calling it progress. One such clown even defends his practice by saying :"But a big hurdle when you're introducing a new character to a line of so many well established characters is that they are bound to be outsiders, and harder to accept as cannon, at least for a while." So in other words: "I'm a talentless hack and writing new characters is hard."
Exactly. Just make a new character. Although I really enjoyed the spiderman universe character. It was really good. But generally I wish people just had more original ideas
@Patricia Mansary yes but this is about anime, in japan we all know most to all of them probably dont know what a black person is. sometimes its wholesome and they want pictures and call you cool, but we also know japan is a very judgmental place. they have black characters but its low bc most of their population is literally white
@Patricia Mansary honestly rather than going like "well im redrawing your clearly asian character as black" we just need to make our own tbh. because we also dont be seeing no american indians and such in anime do we?
@Patricia Mansary Then tell Hollywood to make a change. Why do we need to comply to American standards? Why do we need to represent a race that's almost non-existent in our area? Why do the companies need to care if their main audience aren't Americans?
Before anime became more wide-spread I remember seeing people outraged that anime had dark-skinned characters because they were "Asians drawing "black people" and shouldn't because they didn't understand black culture.", a.k.a only African-Americans who were born and raised in the United States of America, since they think only African-Americans, who are actually just Americans with rarely a double-nationality from Africa, are or can be dark-skinned on this planet and in anime. And now people, especially white Americans with "white guilt", are complaining that they want black (we all know they just want African-American representation specifically) characters in anime, from a country where the vast majority of people is *Asian* and are used to their *Asian* culture and mostly being around *Asians.* If you're simply nice and want more *diversity* in anime because it's becoming a worldwide trend, you can ASK, but don't demand it as if people have to cater to you or owe you anything. I get it that we all want representation everywhere and wherever we go so we're part of a whole, but *let things take their time* instead of demanding and *forcing* an immediate change, especially when mangas and anime come from creators who should be allowed to create whatever characters they want and not because they should be forced to change their vision for anyone. Let's not forget that these are people's *drawn creations,* not a race war that's obligated to be reality-accurate. If you want other people to change their imagination when creating, at least ask nicely and tell them how great your culture is so it INSPIRES THEM. Insulting people isn't going to make them do whatever you want, because that's bullying and narcissism, and also freaking racist because it's forcing someone of a different culture to do something *you* want. I'd even go as far as harshly saying that it's an attempt to "colonize" the anime world, which *you* wouldn't want to forcefully happen to you if you were in their place.
that actually puts up a good thought! when these people demand that change with these smaller areas happen immediately, they're actually feeding into artists just pandering to keep from getting cancelled instead of truly educating themselves and doing it out of the goodness in their hearts. in countries like the us, it's actually encouraging the issues with capitalism through all this "commercializing" these same people are complaining about
Of course, they should be able to handle friendly criticism. The question is if the criticism they are receiving is friendly or not. And while it is hard to always come across as friendly while giving criticism, a good start would be to not imply their art is an unconscious manifestation of them being horrific monsters.
To help understand why sjws are so much into blackwashing everything, is because they have come into it with the perspective of light skin is always seen as Superior in society, so we need to change that by making all the characters dark-skinned. They don't realize we are at a point where people can just draw whatever color character they want, and that's just what's happening. They don't need to worry about it so much anymore, it's kind of taking its own course.

I agree with the first part but the second part is a bit poorly written. In Japan there's a stigma around black people and how they're different. They don't find it racist they've simply never seen a person like them in person. But the second they step into discrimination and isolation then this becomes racist, they may not see it but it is. I've seen a ton of artists drawing fair-skinned characters with dark skin but its more of a friendly tone like "what if this favourite character of mine has dark skin tone like me?" kind of thing which i find harmless. However, what i dont like is when people "fix" characters or give fair-skinned characters darker skin without reason. I've seen a ton of tumblr-esque drawings where, for some reason, their fanart of a fair-skinned character (who is most of the time japanese characters) has triple the shade of their skin colour.... why? i feel like its so unnecessary to make them look so tan when in canon material they're not that dark
Yeah i think that's what some of the posters in this video said like it is ok to change race of the character as long as it's a two-way street, not just "oh you're allowed to make "white" characters black but not vice versa"
Thank you for saying this! I haven’t seen any other comments about how it doesn’t have to be negative. I for one have only seen the first kind of posts with the intention of creating fan art of a character they like and making them look more like the artist in question. Let people enjoy anime and create their own representation in a way that is available for them. It’s the same for black cosplayers. If they aren’t a lot of black characters in anime to choose from they obviously will cosplay a character they like, despite of that character having a lighter skin complexion. I’ve seen a lot of comments saying they should just create their own characters or "just create your own representation", but do they seriously not see how it is maybe not possible for every black artist/anime fan to create a whole new anime?? This is also something that can’t be fixed over night? Let people participate in this non harmful way! What is the problem??
"Friendly" criticism. "There. I fixed your shit." Friendly. Friendly to say the last one attacked was "fixed" meaning it was broken. And also calling it shit. Very friendly. And yeah I've seen a lot of characters blackwashed.
Yeah there is someone on the hetalia amino who is blackwashing characters and not getting called out for it. And before that they made a post with the character “Seychelles” who had her skin darkened in the anime cause she accidentally had white skin cause of budget issues. Now she is perfectly fine in the anime but this person in the post showed a picture of her and said “[creator name] you colorist ba$turd!” Even tho her skin tone is actually perfectly fine cause she may be an African island but she has tons of European influence which in a personification of it, would make the skin tone lighter to symbolize it. Plus apparently the island didn’t have an indigenous population until the Europeans came there. I had made a comment on the post saying I think her tone is perfectly fine and that it complimented her light blue dress cause if her skin was darker it would look like the dress was glowing. Which would distract from the character in my opinion. And guess what! I got bashed for saying that simple thing 🤦🏻♀️

My little niece is biracial and got so excited when she saw a fanart of sailor moon with a darker skin tone, because she looked like her! She'd never seen the show before, so she looked it up and was SO disheartened when she found out that the artist had just changed the original character design. Why can't artists just use their talents to create new characters of color? With personalities and stories that actual kids can relate to? I agree with the statement that there isnt enough poc representation, especially in children's media, but come on, this isn't the way to go about that!
I understand why your niece was disheartened about Sailor Moon not having an actual dark skin. But I don't think we should tell people to stop making fanart of characters that they like, some even make fanart of themselves AS the character. Yes, people should make their own character with their own ethnicity and skin tone. And "blackwashing" isn't really good either. But I think there's a fine line between someone making a fanart, and someone "fixing" an art and be straight up offensive and racist.
Exactly, let artists represent what colour they want to represent, as like darker skin toned people cannot see them selves in white characters, Asian audiences are also unable to see themselves in dark skinned characters. The argument can go both ways. But it is true black characters should be added , and mangas or art with black characters should not be discarded for their skin tone. But cancelling an artist because he or she draws a character white is bullshit. Also black washing , fattening an artists work and criticising them is also disgusting. I would even go as far as to say their efforts of “being equal “are being racist and Xenophobic towards white skinned Asians.
Hmm, thats unfortunate, but nobody has to change the way they do things for your biracial friend, changing the skin tone is something people enjoy, it is calling people names over it that is the issue
@99Keys That's sad to hear. But really just depends on them if they want to represent other colors or not. I also don't think "fixing art" is good either if they darken a certain character's skin tone and calling it their "proper skin tone", especially the ones in Genshin Impact (Kaeya and Xinyan) and saying their being "whitewashed" is pure bs. I also think that more shows nowadays have more POC characters before, and it's good. I just hope that people respect their decisions and artists to not get cancelled just because their characters have fairer skin. I don't think artists deserve hate just because their art doesn't doesn't relate to a certain group of people. And lastly, It's fine for people to draw characters as them, and changing their skin color or the way they look so it would relate to them more, but them saying that they were "fixing" the character is just shtty.
Rule of thumb: its not racist to interpret canonically non humans as any race you like, or redraw your favorite characters as yourself (which can be any race). What the issue is is people "fixing" characters or redrawing anime characters as different races especially if theyre canonically japanese. Literally anime is like the only representarion we get. Please dont take it away from us.

There should be practically ZERO anime character that are black... however black characters in anime are significantly over represented.

i find there's a difference between "there, i fixed your shit" and drawing a character in a certain way, with respect towards the creator(s). lets say that i drew one of my favorite characters, but i gave them dreads and darker skin. i'm still respecting the original design, but i'm making the character "my own", if that makes sense. it's a bit like that trend that was going on social media a while ago, where you drew link in a way to ressemble yourself (it was called "linksona") i'm definitely not the most qualified person to speak about this, considering i'm not a poc, but according to the black creators that i follow that do "black washing", they do it because they dislike the lack of poc rep in games, shows and movies who have an almost entirely white cast
Personally I think if you do this, then you have to say your drawing it like it's a persona : even if you have the right to redraw someone's character, it is still not yours When I see someone redrawing a character with black features I think it's ok, i understand that there isn't a lot of representation and it's cool to see it in a different way, but when the account only draws this character with black features or when the entire account purpose is to redraw characters with black features I find it very disrespectful Why don't they draw their own POC characters ?
you know what's ironic? It always had more diversity it terms of skin color. And yet no one was labeling anyone a specific race, people just accepted the different skin colors. I never thought it was weird to see dark skinned characters, idk I never questioned where they were from. They could be from Japan anyway. Japanese people can be naturally tanned or dark. But now it's all about the Americans waving around their little flags of false justice.
Personally, I'm not a fan of blackwashing and I'm black myself lmao. I get what they mean by "we would like to be represented in the media more." like I totally get that. Princess and The Frog was like my favorite animated movie when I was little because the main character really hit home for me, I was obsessed with her. Same reason I was so quick to take an interest in Falcon, Candyman, Miles Morales etc.. But the difference between their drawings and drawing say, Princess Peach with a fro and dark skin, is that the previously listed characters are ALREADY BLACK. If you word it as just 'racebending', it's still weird but I gotta say it's literally the same thing as gender bending. Just a fun little 'what if they were this instead of that' thing. But for representation purposes? I think it's really stupid if I'm being honest with you. It doesn't feel like representation if the character doesn't actually appear that way in the media. It just feels like someone drawing a cosplayer or TRYING to be progressive by doing a cute little art piece. Make more black characters to represent us, that'd be fantastic. Make the next Doc McStuffins or Princess Tiana for kids to watch and be inspired by. There's more of a chance that a kid is gonna see that on TV or in the movies, than stumbling upon a Twitter or Instagram drawing.
@@ericaploof998 agreed!
The actual "character" part doesn't matter, just that they're black
When people force black characters into everything and their race is the only thing that matters, is that not just a more sophisticated form of the classic "I'm not racist cuz I have a black friend" argument?
This reminded me of a new tv drama and how they got a black actress to play Anne Boleyn- a famous historical WHITE figure.. I still can't believe it, it don't make sense!!..
People who celebrate tokenized hand me down characters are clowns. Such characters are an insult to everyone. It insults the fans of the original character, and it definetely insults the targeted minority because it basically says:" minority characters aren't good enough to stand on their own, so we better take this established character and just change his skin color"
Those virtue signaling clowns want to pretend like they care about minorities yet they ignore actual great characters in favor of race bending white ones and calling it progress.
One such clown even defends his practice by saying :"But a big hurdle when you're introducing a new character to a line of so many well established characters is that they are bound to be outsiders, and harder to accept as cannon, at least for a while."
So in other words: "I'm a talentless hack and writing new characters is hard."
There is one word for those people: hypocrites
Exactly. Just make a new character. Although I really enjoyed the spiderman universe character. It was really good. But generally I wish people just had more original ideas
"Black characters are underrepresented in anime". Well yeah, most anime takes place in japan, so...
@Patricia Mansary Can u just get to the point of what do you actually want? like do we need to worship ur work? "black" character?
we brown Asian also underrepresented in anime, but what?? we don't care. we just enjoy the anime or movie ...
And now people, especially white Americans with "white guilt", are complaining that they want black (we all know they just want African-American representation specifically) characters in anime, from a country where the vast majority of people is *Asian* and are used to their *Asian* culture and mostly being around *Asians.*
If you're simply nice and want more *diversity* in anime because it's becoming a worldwide trend, you can ASK, but don't demand it as if people have to cater to you or owe you anything.
Amen.
that actually puts up a good thought! when these people demand that change with these smaller areas happen immediately, they're actually feeding into artists just pandering to keep from getting cancelled instead of truly educating themselves and doing it out of the goodness in their hearts. in countries like the us, it's actually encouraging the issues with capitalism through all this "commercializing" these same people are complaining about
You spoke no lies.

"Asian artists should bê able to take /friendly/ criticismo, If needed"
Thats..., Thats literaly hidded racism in this line
They dare say stuff like that when using a character from an Asian company as their profile picture.

Context is very important.

However, what i dont like is when people "fix" characters or give fair-skinned characters darker skin without reason. I've seen a ton of tumblr-esque drawings where, for some reason, their fanart of a fair-skinned character (who is most of the time japanese characters) has triple the shade of their skin colour.... why? i feel like its so unnecessary to make them look so tan when in canon material they're not that dark
please say this ten times louder for the people in the back. I beg you.
Yeah i think that's what some of the posters in this video said like it is ok to change race of the character as long as it's a two-way street, not just "oh you're allowed to make "white" characters black but not vice versa"
Yes yes! Like when it’s art depicting maybe headcannons about their skin is fine, but you shouldn’t just go and change a character’s race!
Tumblr also has an obssesion with making all characters Lgbt.

The west is over-sensitive about skin color in recent years ngl
Especially the advent of social media.
This world isn't just black and white. There's a grey area in many things.
I remember I met some online friends back in summer when I was a bit darker cuz of the sun, I met again a few weeks ago and they thought that I bleached my skin ._. tanning exists ppl
i find there's a difference between "there, i fixed your shit" and drawing a character in a certain way, with respect towards the creator(s). lets say that i drew one of my favorite characters, but i gave them dreads and darker skin. i'm still respecting the original design, but i'm making the character "my own", if that makes sense. it's a bit like that trend that was going on social media a while ago, where you drew link in a way to ressemble yourself (it was called "linksona")
i'm definitely not the most qualified person to speak about this, considering i'm not a poc, but according to the black creators that i follow that do "black washing", they do it because they dislike the lack of poc rep in games, shows and movies who have an almost entirely white cast
Personally I think if you do this, then you have to say your drawing it like it's a persona : even if you have the right to redraw someone's character, it is still not yours
When I see someone redrawing a character with black features I think it's ok, i understand that there isn't a lot of representation and it's cool to see it in a different way, but when the account only draws this character with black features or when the entire account purpose is to redraw characters with black features I find it very disrespectful
Why don't they draw their own POC characters ?
@@vauboo6151 i agree with your statement too! i find its better to make your own bipoc characters than to remix white characters.
I miss the anime scene like ten-fifteen years ago when none of this was a thing.
you know what's ironic?
