  • Hatikvah - But is it hope for all?
On this week's History of Israel Explained, we’re looking at one of the most Israeli things out there - HaTikvah, or The Hope - Israel’s stirring, meaningful and, some might say, controversial national anthem.
Unlike other anthems that speak of triumph and victory, the Israeli anthem is a mash up between a Romanian folk-melody, a 16th-century Italian song, and the lyrical thoughts of a drunk romantic poet. Not exactly the stuff of nationalistic dreams, but like the State of Israel itself, Hatikvah is both a symbol of Jewish hope and identity and the anthem for a multicultural and multi-ethnic state dedicated to equality.
Whew, that’s a lot of pressure for a two-verse song.
So what exactly is so controversial about this hopeful song and why do some Israelis refuse to stand up when it’s played (which can be a controversy all of its own)?
Let us know what you think about Hatikvah, the role of anthems in general or any of the other topics we’ve discussed on History of Israel Explained. Israel's anthem is one of very few that can so easily move to tears. It's so heartfelt how one can one not feel the Jewish people's desire to be back in their homeland. So beautiful. Shalom.

I'm also Nigerian and we connect because we're Christians. Long before HaTikvah was written, us Christians would go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but for Muslim Arabs whose families have been in Israel since the 600s AD, it's hard to connect to a song written from a European Jewish perspective.
It would be best to add some stanzas that include them.

@@rjp-sf9hg You're wrong on both counts. A lot of spices make a dish complex in flavor and too little leaves a dish bland. A common criticism of Western non-professional cooks that their food is too bland and the exception to this rule is Italians who use a lot of spices.
As for a song, Israel has a Jewish spirit, but it is far more complex than just Jewish. HaTikvah could include a few verses that include it's a Arabs minorities who have been in the land for over a thousand years. Arabs were in Jerusalem long before Ashkenazi Jews were even a thing. Most of the 2000 years that Jews were expelled, non-Jewish Arabs were living in Israel, so it's preposterous they can't even receive some mention and that they just have to deal with it.

This is a very moving anthem, indeed very unlike other anthems of the world that I've listened to. Even though I'm not Jewish, I feel the yearning to visit this land, the land where my faith came from, the homeland of my Lord, though unfortunately it's extremely difficult for me to go there due to restrictions in my country policy regarding Israel.
I can get why some people don't feel represented and refuse to sing it, but think about it, every country potential has an anthem that doesn't represent everyone, even for me a Malaysian, Chinese by ethnicity and Christian by faith, don't always feel included like in most anthems, which sometimes can be overly religious, but nevertheless it's not such a big issue for me personally and I feel a sense of pride for my nation.
Striking a balance in a multiracial and multireligious country is never easy but people should try to at least look past our differences. That's why sometimes, I don't favour labelling people or even myself by a certain race or ethnicity, it's better to belong to no one but ultimately belonging to everyone.

India's national anthem is literally a geography lesson. It mentions different provinces mountains and rivers of India. In fact one provinces which it refers is not even in India. (It went to Pakistan after partition.)
Infact it is written in a language which is neither spoken by majority of people nor is some kind of ancient religious language. However, our national song Vande Mataram (glory to Motherland) is very much like your national anthem. It is in sanskrit, our holy language. It was part of our anti-colonial struggle. But as not to offend non-hindu population we did not adopt it as our national anthem but rather have to contend with it as a national song. Even today many Muslim Indians refuse to sing it on frivolous grounds such as it is against our religion.

Thanks for the history of the anthem, as I am learning it, I enjoy the melody first, it's like a folksong, it touches my heart, I feel more relaxed and it's easy to follow, somehow the lyrics sound like Japanese to me, very oriental, I am Chinese, in general Chinese people don't like war, they would give up some lands as to compromise in the history, Hong Kong, Macau and lost Taiwan, I would pray they will find a peaceful solution, the war in Middle East would affect the whole world, if Jerusalem is the holy city, shouldn't we have a global anthem to our heavenly Father, an anthem to his kingdom, we all need peace, love, respect, we look toward East to the sun, it shines on all people , let's pray for the holy spirit to come and awaken his people, the 12 tribes all come and worship and celebrate his coming

"east" is like "dawn" - in Albanian dawn = agimi, lindje = east, yet both "agimi i djellit" and "lindja e djellit" means "sunrise," sun=djell. So "east" being the direction of "sunrise" means more than just a geographical east, without the sunrise direction context.

I think the overall spirit of an anthem is more important than forced inclusiveness. The Star-Spangled Banner speaks of a specific event that no one alive remembers, and yet it is used as the national anthem because it embodies a theme in American history, the military victory at a time when America was an underdog.

I think maybe just change the stanza about looking to the east if that’s possible but overall Israel is supposed to be the Jewish state so it only makes logical sense that the anthem embodies the Jewish spirit.
It’s like England’s national anthem is “God save the queen” (changes to king depending on the monarch) you could argue that it doesn’t do enough to represent the various population groups like Muslims who believe in the idea of a caliphate, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, atheists who don’t believe in God and British citizens who identify stronger with another country but the anthem captures the English spirit but would we argue to change that anthem to be more representative of the various groups of people in the land?

That being said, a couple of them spent a pretty long time in Israel & really grew to love it - I can see why they would want to retain Hatikva. My question is whether there could potentially be some form of compromise - maybe a line or two could be omitted, while another line or two could be added to the anthem?

I rejoiced when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city bonded as one together.
    It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD;
for Israel’s law it is to praise the name of the LORD.
There were set the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.
For the peace of Jerusalem pray, “May they prosper, those who love you.”
May peace abide in your walls, and security be in your towers.
For the sake of my family and friends, let me say, “Peace upon you.”

I always felt if was HaTikva was a bit short. It feels wrong to just discard such beacon of hope that brought us where we are today just because it's no longer 100% accurate to the country Israel grew into. So how about adding a second verse that represents modern day with the Israel striving to be a democracy?

Seems America maybe the igniter of this moment. The recent President showcased what she can do and maybe 2024 will be the year? It needs to be discussed or regulated to mere coincidence.

As a descendant of an Anus, I don’t feel entitled to speak to Israel’s acceptance of non-Jews. However, I can absolutely defend the position that non-Jews do not have a claim to the Land. It is the Jewish homeland. Any gentile living in and enjoying the blessings of Israel must be respectful of the nation. If they adopt this attitude, they can fully fall in love with HaTikvah. As for Mizrahim, I do not know how active they were in the Zionist movement. But I do know European Jews fought tooth and nail for the establishment of the State and the liberation of the Land. How many kibbutzim were founded by Mizrahim? How many Mizrahim returned to the land before independence? Those who came later to enjoy the benefits should not shame those who sacrificed so much because of taking pride in their unwavering spirit.

I have listened to more than 10 national anthem and love Israel national anthem most. The melody is great with a little sadness and heartbreaking feeling. Indeed, Jewish history has been quite heartbreaking. Other countries anthems are monotonous.
The lyrics are excellent. The only prophetic song, existed before 1948. The Jews were scattered about two thousand years. Note not 500, 1000, 15000, 3000 or any other numbers of years.
Jewish Messiah is also my Lord and Saviour, will return to Jerusalem. Messiah will land on East of Zion which is Mount Olive, enter through Eastern Gate. So, looking towards East of Zion is correct. In fact, prophetic.
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:27-28)

The 'Star Spangle Banner' at the time, only represented Anglo-Americans. America grew in it's diversity, decades and centuries later. We all stand and sing. SHAME on those NFL players who "take a knee" during the singing of our anthem. If it were not for America's sense of fairness and forward thing, they would all be playing on segregated Black teams. Same holds true for Israel. The people who "don't identify' with Hatikvah, STILL enjoy the freedoms and privileges of Israel's democracy. No difference. It is your country. Stand and sing or leave.

You realize the Arabs complaining about the song have in Israel for over a thousand years while most modern Jews' families immigrated there in the last century, right? Their only connection to the land is that they are descended from the ancient Israelites who were the natives of the land/one of the first people to live there
The Arabs have a continuous chain of descent for over a thousand years, it's justifiable why there upset.
Also, every citizen, no matter what they're born contributes and helps build a society and should be treated. Saying their opinion isn't important because of misnomers is wrong. People like their homes and their lives and don't just pack up and leave like that. As humane people, we should look after our neighbor, we all people with feelings and emotions after all. There's never an excuse to treat an innocent person badly.

Hatikvah is the national anthem that promotes racism fascism terrorism apartheidism xenophobia undemocraticism and ethnocentrism. That anthem has an ug Historical side on it, the anthem was 1st played at World Zionist Congress it's a congregational where they are planning to genocide to annahilate Palestinians. The IDF terrorists murderers and the Zionist settlers there in West Bank played and sung that anthem while murdering Palestinians.
I rather stand sing and pay respect to North Korean National Anthem than Israel's National Anthem that promotes racism fascism terrorism apartheidism xenophobia undemocraticism and ethnocentrism.
