- On this week’s History of Israel Explained, we’re heading back to 1948 and Israel’s War of Independence. While modern-day Israel is a force to be reckoned with, in its early days, its military might was pretty much non-existent.
Back then the Israeli army primarily consisted of a bunch of barely trained Holocaust survivors who waged war with outdated, ineffective and hardly functioning weapons. Actually, “weapons” is probably too strong a word for most of the equipment they were using, which included the (in)famous Davidka...
Above all odds, though, this makeshift army performed heroic - some would say miraculous - feats, including the creation of Israel’s own Burma Road. These feats turned the tide in the war and guaranteed the existence of the fledgling State of Israel amid a sea of hostile neighbors.
In time, Israel went from a scrappy underdog with a rag-tag army (albeit one with the world’s support) to a strong regional superpower and military leader that is now seen as a Goliath rather than a David.
But is this viewpoint fair? Did Israel gain support in the early days because no one expected it to survive? Does a strong country still deserve world support? Should we always root for the underdog?
This video raises a ton of questions. What do you think? Drop your comments below.

I remember a story I heard about the war of independence. As soon as the British pulled out, war was inevitable. The Israelis drove jeeps up to the Arab positions at night dragging large chains behind them. Fearing that the British had returned with tanks, the Arabs fled leaving behind much equipment and weaponry. These was an engenious tactic that required equal parts cunning, courage and good fortune.
I didn't know we've done that. Thanks to you I learned something new today!

@@ibn_ismail if you hate oppression, you must really be upset at how the Arab Legion expelled every Jew from East Jerusalem in 1948 (most of them non-Zionists) after trying to starve all the Jews in the city to death and destroyed all of the synagogues.
...Right?
I really wish people would stop saying David used a slingshot. David used a sling and was deadly with it. Just imagine how many hours he had practiced with it while tending sheep. The sling was a weapon used by many armies in the ancient world and well into the 1700's. It was last used as a military weapon during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
exactly right
I got fascinated by the sling as a kid and made one and practiced and practiced ... and I could barely hit the side of a barn with the thing.
Slings are really fun to use, thanks for the interesting fact, I didn’t know that they were used in the Spanish civil war
@@alexcarter8807 the Greek method is easier to aim with
I've been slinging over 10 years and I am NOT a master.
But here are some really interesting things.
First let's get a few things out there
Bullets are the correct name for Sheppard sling ammo.
I have a few different Bullets ranging from 1 ounce to 1 lbs.
I have used rocks, nuts ( nuts and bolts), clay, and my favorite lead..
One of my bullet types is a whisler. It sounds like artillery. I learned to make it after a long time of researching the Bullets the Roman's used.
During most of the Roman empire every soldier had to learn the sling.
The Roman's had company sized units thats focus was the sling.
A sling is superior to a bow. Can by far out distance a bow.
A sling is very bad in forest. A bow is far better. ( branches)
Last war I heard of slings used was the US Vietnam War. However, last major use was the Spanish Civil War as you said. They used them in the Spanish Civil War to launch cocktails.
Knowing what I know now. If I knew then. The last war would have been Desert Storm. Lol.
I really like the sling.
Now for the interesting stuff.
I can lethally sling a bullets 400 yards. By that I mean at 400 yards I can put a bullet through a piece of 1/2 plywood.
Why is that lethal? 1/2 plywood is equal to a human or 300 lbs hogs skull.
I have hit game (deer size) at 300 yards and had it for " dinner;"
A sling can kill a grizzly. Though, I don't advice it. You have max of 3 tries before its on you. Most the time one.
A sling is a different weapon then a bow or a firearm. A bow is made to bleed them. A firearm penitration. A sling is blunt force. Think of being hit by a train.
It crushes. Take a 0.5 lbs bullet. Hit somethings leg. And its broken. Often time compound fracture prior to it running away. By running 100% of the time it will become compound. Then walk up on it. And finish it. ( FYI I also have a flair, which is not cheaply made)
Off subject, my flair has a solid metal ball the size of a baseball. Real chain and a good handle. One swing has killed a 500 lbs hog more then once. Makes headchease easy to get to.
I like using clay Bullets, but lead is much better.
I have spent a lot of money learning. Truck windshields, fenders doors and even a hood suffered. All those were behind me ( ekkk).
I'm also really good with a bow.
A sling takes decades to master.
A bow months
Firearm days.
Why did armies stop using slings,
Here is my guessing.
1. Very long to learn.
2. Unless it open field a bow is better. Trees are bad for slinger.
3. Ammo is heavy. Effective ammo is 1 ounce and heavier. While an arrow is quite light.
Ok some will say use rock. This drastically changes accuracy. Plus not everywhere has rocks. A rock needs to be the size of ones palm, flat and round sides.
When I say trees are bad for slinger. I am referring to the sling hitting branches not the bullet. As far as bullets vs arrows with branches. I call them equal. Both have + and -.
I don't consider anyone above a beginner until the use 100 yards plus targets and hit 25% of the time.
Novice 200 yards 50% 300yd 25% 400 yards 10%.
Masters 400 yards or better 50% or better.
I started slinging because someone made a claim about a Sheppard sling that i though was untrue.
After I put a bullet through my fender that was 50 yards away I changed my mind. Funny it took me a while to stop having my truck behind me. Today. I park it a mile away when I'm practicing. Except now I probably don't need to. But frankly im tired of fixing things.
God said it "I will bless you and make you a blessing, I will bless those who bless you and curse this who curse you"
Yea right.
If you compare the biblical promos and prophecy with Jewish history you will find it quite convincing. Don't dismi$ it before you research.
I don't belive in Jewish prophecies.
That is like admitting that rest of the world are worthless.
@@dominicj7977 No such thing. It merely states that those who are good to Israelites/Jews do well. Those who are bad to them end badly.
People who don't believe in God will never understand the miracle that is Israel. But if you read a prophesy written thousands of years ago in the book of Isaiah, everything will become clear.
"'Who has ever seen or heard of anything as strange as this? Has a nation ever been born in a single day? Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment? But by the time Jerusalem's birth pains begin, the baby will be born; the nation will come forth. Would I ever bring this nation to the point of birth and then not deliver it?' asks the Lord. 'No! I would never keep this nation from being born,' says your God." - Isaiah 66:8-9

At the Armoured Corps Museum in Latrun and the Air Force Museum in Beersheva, they relate some humorous stories about how the new State of Israel acquired military equipment. Can't recall them in detail but one was that an Irishman in the British Army, just drove his armoured vehicle over to the Israelis and gave it to them. In another case, a couple of pilots in England managed to convince a supplier of airplanes that they needed to rent some WWII aircraft (Spitfire? Hurricane?) for use in a movie they were making. The Israelis thought outside the box. They were forced to be creative as they lacked all the normal ingredients of an army. They were virtuosos of battle creativity. The Jews have the best protector, teacher ,friend on their side God creator of all that knows all and is .

@Alice Dexter Strange that...............what war in 48 ???? What happened in 48 was nothing more than aggressive invasion, an obscenely ironic re-enacting of the Nazi's policy of 'lebensraum'; an act by followers of the Jewish faith attempting to colonise another nation through terrorist acts. In any event, there are ample photos of US arms and munitions being utilised by the Zionist terrorists during their terror campaign in "48". have some respect yourself; do your research.
