Pre-IDF Brigades: Haganah, Irgun and Lechi | History of Israel Explained | Unpacked

  • This week, we’re examining the underground militias that preceded the IDF and looking at the divisions that pitted Jew against Jew in pre-State Israel. Lechi. Irgun. Haganah. We ask who these groups were, what caused them to - briefly - unite and what led them to ultimately disband.
This is one of the more difficult periods in Israeli history and a subject that raises a lot of questions. After all, we aren’t talking about polite squabbles. This was real life-on-the-line-type of disagreements between Jewish groups that led to intimidation, violence and even assassinations and bombings.
The violence and actions of the period we’re talking about, from the 1930s to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 showed the British (who ruled Palestine at the time) and the rest of the international community how important the establishment of a Jewish state meant to the Jewish people.
But did obtaining the Zionist dream come at the expense of morals, especially Jewish morals?
What do you think? Is violence ever a legitimate way to achieve particular goals?

Of course violence has to be the last option, or sometimes not even an option. But time has change and I don't think that question can be applied to the years of the ww2 and the years prior the independence of Israel. Think about it, during the Holocaust we had the Partisans. They choose violence methods in order to rescue, defende and protect Jews. Something needed to be done, we couldn't just sit and wait for something to happen, we needed to take actions and do something about our brothers being murdered for nothing. Now in this case, the three underground armies were created for that purpose. To protect and defend Jews but also to fight, to fight to have our home back, 'to be a free people in our land' just like the Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem says. The hope of more than two thousands years to live in the land of Zion and Jerusalem under hebrew's rule and not under a foreign country rule, in this case the British rule. We had this dream even before of the Holocaust and we were moving slowly towards that dream, until the Holocaust happened and we needed urgently a home a place of our own to live without fear. These three underground armies had its differences, but focusing on the Irgun and Lechi they used violence. But that was because we didn't had any other choice! Diplomacy wouldn't do anything to help the Jewish have their, our, own country ! It was enough! We couldn't just sit and wait for the next meeting with British officers, we needed to take matters on our own hands. The yearning for Eretz Israel was among all these members of the underground armies, they knew the dangers of it all but there's a time when you realize that hey, 'my brothers are being killed not just in Europe but in Israel (or British Mandate). We cannot wait for something to change. We need to fight for ourselves, for our country for a place for us' and that's what they did. In that time at that moment ' violence ', actions is what it was needed in order to fight for our home. So in that moment it was the right thing to do. Just like the Partisans did to protect and defend Jews. In the end, it's not a coincidence that the British Mandate wrote the white paper, they in fact did had conversations with Hitler, they knew what was happening in Europe and decided still to limit the acces of Jews in Israel. So diplomacy, talking and meeting with the British who wanted to control the Jewish quantity in Israel (and they did everything in their power to achieve that, including sending back the boats full of Jews back to Europe knowing what their fate would be with the nazis over there) was off limits, and without any good outcome for us. They, the three armies, may had many differences, but refering to the Irgun and Lechi they did EVERYTHING in their powers to avoid more Jewish deaths by fighting with their own life at all costs to free our country of the British Mandate so what's says in our anthem becomes a reality 'free people in our land'.

Of course. The British were given a mandate to help forge an independent Israel by the league of nations in the twenties. The British lied and instead they turned eretz Israel into a British colony. Had the Jewish underground not fought against the British there would have been no Israel.
The irgun did exactly what the ira did in Ireland, the vietcong did in Vietnam and the fln did in algeria :they fought for their nation's independence from a foreign colonial power. While the haganah was appeasing the British and handing over Jewish fighters to Britain. They followed in the example of Simon bar kochba who fought the Romans 1,800 years ago. You might think them controversial but they're heroes in my book.
There are a lot inaccuracies in you video. The irgun did not fight fellow jews. In fact when the haganah was turning over Jewish fighter to the British the irgun gave orders not to retaliate in order not to cause a civil war, which according to the Jewish virtual library, brought the irgun national sympathy for their cause. During ww2 the irgun did not fight the British. The stopped their campaign against the British to help the fight against Hitler. And how did they repay them? By arresting and deporting thousands of jews to Cyprus in concentration camps, executing Jewish fighters, detaining jews without trial, stirring up arab Jewish tensions (divide and rule) etc.
People seem to have forgotten that the Arab invasion of Israel in 1948 was supported by the British with money and arms. They even plotted to divide eretz Israel between the conquering Arab armies, with them keeping Haifa.
They desperately (UK) wanted to keep Haifa and israel under the British influence to ensure that they would remain in the middle east forever.
Given the British betrayal and hostility the irgun did the logical thing and fought a guerrillas war against the British imperialists while making all efforts to minimize civilian casualties. Your trying to paint them as extremists and terrorists is frankly, disingenuous.

This is revisionist rationalization nonsense to dissipate anyone finding out who these organizations really were and all the barbaric atrocities they committed over decades. They were officially declared terrorist organizations by both the US and Britain. They all 3 worked together and murdered tens of thousands, wiped out entire christian and Arab villages. Two of their depraved sociopath commanders became Prime Ministers. In 1947, they worked together to blow up the King David Hotel, the headquarters of the British Mandate, to eliminate evidence the British obtained in a raid proving they worked hand in hand with the local Jewish leaders and Jewish League picking and planning terrorism attacks. The Jewish League and other leadership officially denied them, even though two commanders immediately became early Prime Ministers. They didn't disband, they morphed into the new terrorist organization as the IDF in 1948 and immediately went on an ethnic cleansing murder spree known as the Nakba. They haven't changed tactics or gained any morals in the decades since. Irgun was officially formed in 1928. But there were unofficial paramilitary terrorists for decades before that. Recruited and trained cult fanatics were sent into the Ottoman Empire in the 1870's with a long term goal of taking over the region and land jews had no claim to and had only had a tiny fractional presence in for 2000 years. Originally the Ottomans allowed foreign land purchases, but moved to stop that once they realized what was happening and as the body count kept mounting The terror and murder seriously accelerated after WWI and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Lehi even went to Hitler and proposed being allies three times during WWII and the holocaust because the main goal at the time was forcing the British out of Palestine.

….its funny how you conveniently forget the mention that Jewish settlements in 1920’s all the way to the mid 40’s fell victim to horrible massacres and “riots” perpetrated by Palestinian Arabs who wished to rid Mandatory Palestine of the few Jews living in the country. That’s kinda why the Haganah was created-to defend the Jewish settlements from Arab and British aggression. The other militia organizations were borne out a desire to commit fully to offensive military action as opposed to defensive. In other words, the other militias wished to destroy the enemies of Israel without mercy. I wouldn’t dare say that they did not commit horrible atrocities, but that wouldn’t make them “terror organizations.” Just as the U.S military’s innumerable atrocities don’t make the entity a terrorist ministry.

@@Kingrich_777 so you have Zionist leaders and the British colonizers making deals in Europe to hand off an already stolen country. They begin to put up settlements and you don’t expect revolt. This idea that it’s fine to go ahead and start a new country on the grave of another is pretty insane. The idea that the land isn’t supposed to belong to any one religion is the only way it works. You can’t make deals with the colonizer to take over and bring in people from another continent and expect nothing to happen. Doesn’t matter because the British made sure Zionists had all the weapons and Palestinians had none. It’s sad that we couldn’t of had one nation with all three religions today regardless of the name. But you can’t colonize and oppress people and do whatever you want because some book you wrote thousands of years ago tells you that you are special. It’s insanely narcissistic.

Abraham Stern and his gang were fascist terrorists. But unlike other figures and groups who are labeled that by their critics and enemies, Stern himself declared the ideology of Lehi as fascist and tried to form an alliance with Mussolini and Hitler with these credentials which were sincere and followed Mussolini’s Doctrine of Fascism and modeled itself after Hitler’s Mein Kampf except he switched out the Aryans and Jews. He continued to deny the Holocaust even after the end of WWII. Stern also labeled Lehi as a terrorist organization himself, which they proudly admitted in their publications.
Lehi didn’t just terrorize the British colonialists and Palestinians. They terrorized fellow Jews and Israelis and assassinated respected figures and heroes in the Jewish community. For example they assassinated Rudolf Kastner who was responsible for saving tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust with nearly 2,000 of them in the Kastner Train alone. Lehi hypocritically smeared this hero of Israel as a Nazi collaborator who was responsible for countless deaths in the Holocaust and then murdered him.

They were not ancestral lands for the jews. All that is a fake backstory the jews wrote for themselves after their religious cult emerged after 400 BC. They create the 3000 year old culture claim by co-opting the Israelites who were semitic (which means Arab speaking) Canaanites and poly-theistic. Everyone accepts the BS founding myth because they use the same names and words, israel, israelites, and everyone accepts the co-opting as fact. The Canaanites were a generalized group of various Arab tribes. The jews only ever had autonomic control of a small region before the Romans booted them. For the last 2000 years the jews only had a tiny fractional presence in the Levant until the armed paramilitary squatters were sent in the 1870's to begin ethnic cleansing through any means possible. The issue was never about a 'safe place.' European jews began discussing having a country for their religious cult, they are not a race, after the fall of Napolean when all of Europe coalesced into Nationalist countries. The problem was everywhere was already taken by people with real nationalist claims. They even discussed possibilites in Africa, but they are stunningly racist considering all the victim whining. They discussed Alaska but no one wanted to be cold. They even discussed Grand Island NY. Can you imagine when they started murdering Americans and Canadians to expand by ethnic cleansing like they have in Palestine?

I watch this video in light of the recent Oct. 7th attacks on Israelis by Hamas militants. The similarities between the resolve by the zionists commitment to do whatever it had to to gain an independent state and Hamas to do the same is clear.
It should be abundantly clear that the answer to today's conflict is an independent Palestinian state.
You would think that of all people the jews would sympathize with the struggle of the Palestinians. Instead they are imposing the same actions and using the same language that were used against them in the Holocaust. Calling arabs animals and inhuman? Doesn't that sound familiar?
The answer for Israeli peace and security is not the confiscation of all of Palestine. It first needs to face the wrongs that it has committed against the Palestinians and then make restitution.
I believe that if this is done with mutual commitment to peace and moving forward that Palestinians and Israelis can live side by side together.
I have always had sympathy for the persecution that jews have suffered but now am saddened that they are persecuting another group of people themselves. I guess it's true that hurt people hurt people. It's time to end the cycle of violence and find compassion and peace ... Shalom ✌🏼

    Hi,
This was taken from a book - "Inside Terrorism" by Bruce Hoffman.
    "But the Irgun’s
inchoate revolt against British rule was short- lived. Less than three months
after it began, Britain was at war with Germany. Confronted by the pros
    pect
of the greater menace of a victorious Nazi Germany, the Irgun declared
a truce and announced the suspension of all anti- British operations for the
war’s duration. Like the rest of the Jewish community in Palestine, who had
also pledged to support the British war effort, the Irgun hoped that this loy
    alty
would later result in the recognition of Zionist claims to statehood"
can you explain why you and Bruce Hoffman disagree on weather Irgun's had a cease-fire with Britain?
    Thanks,
    great video.

💥 Israel’s demolition of Palestinian homes is a war crime according to ICC.
🔥Article 6 of the UN Arms Trade Treaty states that, “a State Party shall not authorise any transfer of conventional arms… if it has knowledge at the time of authorisation that the arms or items would be used in the commission of genocide, crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, attacks directed against civilian objects or civilians protected as such, or other war crimes as defined by international agreements to which it is a Party.” 🔸legal.un.org/avl/ha/att/att.html

I am somebody who is not Jewish, Israeli, Arab nor Muslim. I am just trying to learn more about the history of the Israel/Palestine conflict (for want of a better word/term). What I have noticed is the spin pro-Palestinian or pro-Israeli videos/articles put in their content. In this video, they seem to be very careful not to mention who was there before the "British Mandate for Palestine" was established, only "picking things up from the 1920's" see 1:50, or calling the area, 'pre-state Israel' and i.e. no mention of Palestine or the Palestinian people. No exploration of what led to the Arab rioting other than hints it's due to race/anti-semetism. Maybe this is the case but the more I look into this, it does seem that there was understandable resentment of being displaced from one's homeland. There is no mention of Plan Dalet or even the Nakba. Would be good to see the Zionist perspective on these events as only pro-Palestinian authors seem to talk about these and therefore shape the narrative.
Pro-Palestinian authors do the same. They don't really address the plight of the Jewish people and explore the need for a Jewish state. I think authors on both sides (as with all people) are sometimes unwitting in their biases but it does feel like their are strategic omissions (again as all people do) which is unhelpful if we are to meet in the middle and gain an understanding of each others position. Sadly it all comes down to human nature.

Is your God alive? Beyond the physical and spiritual connection, space and time, where does your God dwell and communicate? Are thoughts in your head evidence or discernment? Does your God write books for you to read and believe? Low level communications, now being transformed into a higher realm using technology that you don't comprehend, makes your God a greater mystery. Inspired to write books and now artificial intelligence, changes the prophet into scientist and you comprehend even less. Are you talking to your God through an on/off switch? Beguiled by magic and you are easy to believe in false Gods. Knowledge separated from thinking creates robots without spirit.
