If you’re a fan of Stranger Things and curious how and why key decisions were made in Season 4, you’re in the right place. That’s because shortly after watching Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 (episodes 8 and 9) I conducted an extended interview with creators Matt and Ross Duffer.
During the extended conversation, the Duffer Brothers pulled back the curtain on the making of the most popular series on Netflix and were more than willing to talk about everything. This included how they figured out the season finale, why Max (Sadie Sink) was Vecna’s target, Noah Schnapp’s heartbreaking scene in the car with Finn Wolfhard in Episode 8, and how they want to release a VHS pan and scan version of Stranger Things.
But that’s not all.
During the sprawling conversation, the Duffer’s also revealed a lot of new information about Stranger Things Season 5 including where it takes place, the pace of the season, how the final season will reveal a lot of new information about the Upside Down, how they already have the last twenty minutes of the series finale figured out, and a lot more.

Can't imagine the amount of pressure they're under right now, they definitely deserve a vacation before season 5. Such incredible and talented writers. I don't see them getting half the praise the actors do, while Stranger Things wouldn't even exist without them...

I don't know... I feel like they get a pretty good amount of praise compared to a lot of other showrunners. I've been in a lot of discussion threads since season 4 dropped, and I've mentioned a lot of characters but the most common thread is that I almost always mention the Duffer Brothers.
@@pthibault630 Yeah, thankfully directors and show writers are getting a lot more exposure (rightfully so) then in the past.
In an article they said they’ll take a vacation this July and the first week of august they start writing in the write room. I’m not sure if it was this interview that was in the article I have watched this all. But one think I really really want to know is how did the upside down go from rocky hills to Hawkins, and is it just Hawkins or the whole world. But my theory is that once El opened that portal in episode eight of season 1 the whole upside down could connect to the real world for a quick second and copy and paste because if the upside down is officially stuck in 1983 like it says online then that must be how since Henry got set there in 1979 or something like that.

Also very pleased to hear the little tease that Will and Jonathan will be reconnecting more. Oh my god yes please, they've been starved of scenes together for so long, and the Byers are truly at their best when they're together.

My guess has been for a long time that Will is gonna gain some kind of powers given to him by Vecna via a "seed" planted in him in season 1

You could see Will being supernatural in Season 5. They literally dressed him up as a mage and call him “Will The Wise” in previous seasons. Cannot WAIT for this reveal!
I don’t understand why some people are mad about Will not coming out in season 4. People need to understand that Will is a 15 year old freshman WHO LIVES IN THE 80s! It was hard for people to come out during that time. If he did come out, It would’ve been forced and unrealistic. Especially if it’s about a queer kid in the 80s. We need to give Will some time to accept himself. And Noah DID confirm that Will is gay AND in love with Mike in a recent Variety interview so yeah, Will being gay is officially canon. We don’t need to argue about Will’s sexuality anymore.
I think the fact that his story was mainly used to prop up a straight relationship this season was pretty uncool. But otherwise I completely agree that people's reaction to where S04 left him was pretty short sighted. People are forgetting his story isn't over yet. He and Robin obviously perceive their identities differently, and I like that they're giving us two diverse queer experiences.
Robin is totally comfortable with who she is, she just keeps it secret for safety. But Will, who's faced homophobia from bullies and his Dad his entire life, obviously isn't there yet. It's a rough time in history to be gay, he's only a kid, and he's been sent the message his entire life that being gay is a gigantic moral failing. It makes sense that he hasn't learned to accept himself yet, so his failure to come out this season doesn't mean it's not coming. It just means his journey is going to take a lot longer than Robin's did, which is totally fine. It's not queerbaiting, it's giving him the time he needs to realistically come to terms with himself.
jonathan saying "nothing could come between us, nothing" made it pretty clear will was gay because there was nothing else that would make sense in reference to. but i do think the whole mike and el thing being used to make will sad was very counterproductive, all will has seen is suffering so when he inevitably gets tied up with the mind flayer again, there isn't that same "light" that max had in her flashback sequences that can make that suffering feel narratively rich and dynamic.
@@herb_rolls3929 It's also just a huge shame that the main purpose of him being gay this season was to project his feelings on El so he could be a hype man for Mike's relationship. I have faith in them to explore things further this season, but it literally feels like he was only gay because Mike and El's relationship needed help.

Who's mad? I mean the narrative is absolutely realistic. Gay people have a hard time even NOW, TODAY! Homohatred (I just made that word up) will always be around just like racism and prejudice.
His sexuality (at least for Mike) is no secret now. People just need to deal with it. If they're mad, they might as well scratch their asses and get glad. 🤷🏾♂️
I agree in that yes, I’m excited for S5, but I also want them to take the time they need to make the last season as good as possible. If they have the time, write all the scripts so they can view it as a whole. There’s enough content out there to keep me busy until they’re ready to release.
The only thing I would like to see is a little more involvement from the parents. I get that it was the 80s and parents didn’t know every detail of their kids’ lives. But we’ve taken it to a new level where the town was actively targeting their children. One of their children’s friends ended up seriously injured in the hospital. The parents must be feeling some way about that, right? They have to have some opinions on that. They don’t need to be as involved as Joyce and Hopper, but they must have questions about what’s going on, right? I think that’s the only thing I would like to see change with S5 comparatively to previous seasons.
I’m okay with S5 releasing in 2025 because they had 3 years to do S4, I think taking that extra time to finish the whole series is 100% worth it. And it sounds / looks better too, Season 5, 2025.

Loads of people keep saying he's overacting because he's crying every other scene this season, but I think they're just not used to seeing such a sensitive and emotionally vulnerable male character. I've always loved Noah in the role, and I'm glad it sounds like they're finally going to give him something to do again next season.

Thank you Duffer Bros, your show speaks to me in ways no other show ever has. As an 80s baby this show has been fantastic to me since day 1 and I know it will remain that way til the final shot. Thanks for this great interview Frosty.
Honestly I’ve been wanting a blu ray box set release for the entire series and praying they would release one after the series wrapped, so I’m so happy they will have one coming out!
Right, I was able to land season 1 in 4K But the other seasons have been hard AF to find.
Thank you SO much for this! I am a HUGE fan of the show and after the release of season 4 my hyperfixation with this show is back full-force and I am devouring content like a starved person. Season 4 was epic and I can't wait to see where they take things in season 5.

You're not alone. All of what you said applies to me too. Stranger Things is my all time 3rd favorite work of ALL fiction. That's says a LOT because I'm just as big of a nerd as the Duffers. So I've seen everything they've seen and read (probably more since I'm older).
Can I know what else just listen to these guys' talk for hours? As a fellow filmmake, these guys are such inspiration to me, I swear it would be such an honor to meet them in person.
These guys are the most fascinating show makers I've ever seen to listen to. So open, honest and engaging about every topic. Would love to see more of them just talking about stuff like this.
saying it one more time, They killed Eddie in the upside down for one purpose, to leave Vekna a body to take, Vekna retreated to the hive mind after his body was burned, he will now reach out to eddies body with the tentacles and revive him and use eddie, then eleven will kick vekna out of eddies body later. I'm sure they have some twists, but this has to be the reason why the needlessly killed eddie in the upside down, he's Vekna's only chance to regain corporeal form...

after watching this interview, I have formed a new theory... I didn't realize what the spores were doing until listening to this. So maybe, just maybe, henry is going to have a change of heart or redemption thingy. I still think he uses eddies body, but I have a feeling henry, using eddies body, is gonna come in and help eleven at the end....
another possibility is that vekna and henry had a conciousness split. ie, maybe the part of henry that is vekna has escaped to the real world via spores and is attacking there, while henry is still in the upside down, free of vekna's personality, so then he would see eddie and help him, etc...

I really loved SCHNAP'S performance; so beautifully and meaningfully UNDERSTATED. You can tell that they banked a lot on EDDIE being a galvanizing force for the events of ST4 to be driven by - and I sometimes found the ELEVEN story flow of her personal development to be straight up. As we delved into the later episodes, MBB got a good dose of really reaching for it (I think) and everyone had powerful scenes and powerful moments especially SADIE SINK.
him saying that the “OG group” will be back in season 5 makes me think that max won’t get much screen time in season 5 :(. man I hope her and Lucas can go on that movie date

please Please PLEASE make sure and try to push for a legit 4k uhd blu-ray release that ALSO includes atmos TrueHD audio ...for some reason the regular 1080p bluray for season 1 had TrueHD audio, but the 4k release only has lossy 5.1 audio... was really bummed when I realized that...

Yes, I definitely do hope Stranger Things will have a better ending than Game Of Thrones, but after how Game Of Thrones ended, I definitely decided I would prefer Stranger Things more over Game Of Thrones, and I have more faith in the Duffer Brothers than David Benioff & D.B. Since Vecna has now officially transcended his human form (i think he planned to ditch his body) and is connected to everyone in hawkins i think he will have the ability to completely assume a person's life taking over their body and with access to all of their memories he could potentially infiltrate the group that way.
I do feel like Vecna planted a perverbial seed in Will that has been dormant and waiting for the 4th kill of season 4 to trigger the process. Will has clearly been suffering since the end of season 1 because i think hes been hiding a secret and i cant wait to find out what it is

People are so used to the mind flayer coming in different forms through 3 seasons and when they were given the big baddie of all time and the master of puppets behind all these in season four, they refuse to believe that he somehow is the mastermind behind all this. Beginning of all this. They are still thinking nah the mind flayer is more powerful henry will fall after trying to harness it’s power which is beyond his limits and blah blah 😩 it physically hurts me to see people thinking like that
the duffers said in one interview (i honestly don't remember where maybe Netflix geeked before volume 2) that the mind flayer was in charge of vecna, who operated more like a general, and the demogorgons were its army. It also is anticlimactic in the staging of a supernatural show that the one behind it all is a human (if it turns out vecna controls the mind flayer), it removes the mystery element and imposing nature of a thing that could have no abided by human laws of nature the way the mind flayer does (not having a physical body and all that). Some people have claimed that there are clock noises in the earlier seasons but the clock noises aren't the same sample and are stereotypically used in supernatural horror shows to indicate pressure. I think narratively, it would be best to leave mind flayer as the most powerful, this god-like creature consisting of pure evil that made a deal with Vecna as a opposed to Vecna took the power and control from a spooky mass of energy.
@@herb_rolls3929 I’m not saying the “mind flayer” here on I’ll call is as a dark energy, it is not powerful. Hell it’s more powerful than henry himself cause henry was a human who had telekinesis,telepathy and stuff he was a product of lab experiments (i refuse to believe he’s naturally born even though it has not being discussed in the show yet so let’s leave it like that for now). He is basically a dude with some powers.
So he was banished to a realm where no human presence is encountered and he found this dark energy. We cannot humanize it by calling it the mind flayer at this point cause we did that in S2-S3 cause that’s what the kids called it but now we know it was a dark energy source. So henry was mesmerized by this and he had to acquire that dark energy to himself to get the handle of that entire realm as far as we understand it’s a hive mind because of that dark energy. It connects every single thing on that realm. So henry acquired this big brain shaped it and gave it a form and because of that, he’s now capable of handling everything from the particles to the demogorgens and stuff. Isn’t it the whole point we needed to the story? That henry was responsible for everything happened from S1?
What my point is it doesn’t matter if the dark energy is more powerful than vecna cause it simply doesn’t matter. It doesn’t need to bring balance to the world, it doesn’t needed to open a gate to this world and enter, it doesn’t needed to target El and kill her(in S3). It doesn’t had the motive. Only henry did. That’s why he used this energy to do his bidding. So why is it so hard to digest the fact that vecna is the big baddie. He himself took credit of everything happened to El and the kids was because of him. In the last episode.
As for the clock sounds, yeah I did heard them too when I binged recently but there’s a clue in every season that everything happened in S4 is connected. Connected to vecna. I don’t know whether Duffers knew they are going to bring first number (001) to the final battle all along or it just happened while going on with the show. But it’s more connected to S3 so I’ll stick with the fact that Duffers really planned it.

no. i cried one time during the entire show and that was when he died, but hes gone. i hope he doesnt come back because it would be so repetitive. eleven at the start of season 2 turned out to be alive, hopper at the start of season 4 turned out to be alive, max was revived by eleven. if they did it again it would be so repetitive.

I love the Duffer brothers. They are brilliant story tellers and so interesting to see them talk. I just wish they bring Eddie back. That's all I want. Everything else about st4 was perfect. Only Eddie's death felt unnecessary and like a mistake

Guys, I have the weirdest feeling they'll have circular ending in form that season 5 ending will be season 1 intro scene and that everything in between will be resolving and memories
It would be good if a spinoff be made about 008 from season 2 episode 7…, it very much deviated from the storyline and wouldn’t make sense unless they had future plans for it.

Them saying that S5 probably won't be as long as S4 is the reason why I don't want a time jump and just go straight to the action, a few weeks/or a month of the group having a time off because remember eleven also has to rest so she can come back stronger but the time jump being like years??? It just wouldn't feel right and then they would have to recap and basically show us what they have been doing all this time which would waste screen time
The conundrum is that the young actors are years older by the time season 5 is filmed. From this perspective a time jump makes sense but difficult given the cliff-hanger ending to season 4.

Synopsis
UNOFFICIAL PLOT: The Upside Down violently opens with fiery rifts in the town of Hawkins after Vecna succeeded in his plan. Eleven and her friends will find a way to stop Vecna and the Mind Flayer for the last time to prevent them from taking over the whole planet.
This seasons feels like its two season 4 and 5

liked how JONATHAN was not necessarily shown in a flattering light the way we saw him in ST1. He's a hard to grapple with guy with complex emotions and his own sense of what's important and what isn't despite if anyone else agrees. I wouldn't mind if the ending of ST5 blows the %^& out of the water so that the happy ending of sorts is avoided or leavened with intense finalities...and even fatalities if called for.
They did wait to do Max until Season 4.

I think Stranger Things spinoff will be an anthology series ala John Carpenters Halloween: Season of the Witch. Totally new cast and new story... These guys have a lot of goodwill with the fans. I hope they take their time and continue to do original stuff. a VHS pan & scan sounds amazing.
They've confirmed somewhere (couldn't tell you where but I definitely read it) that the spinoff won't follow any of the original characters. They said something about how they want to explore something they've never done before, and they couldn't do that if old characters were there.

Stranger Things: Wrath of the Beholder - Spin-off Series
Synopsis
This is set in 2009. The kids are older now, and they have children too. Mike and Eleven live together in Indianapolis with four kids, aged seven, twelve, seven, and three, near where Lucas and Max (Who is in a wheelchair) live with their ten year old, six year old, and newborn baby. Dustin has moved to Utah and now lives with his wife, Suzy, and their two kids, who are five and two years old. Unfortunately Will has passed away, and his old friends attend his funeral as pallbearers. Joyce and Jonathan vow to get revenge on the drunk driver that crashed into Will when he was driving home one night. Meanwhile, Steve lives with his wife Yvonne in the new Hawkins, which lies just outside the old one. Robin and her wife live nearby. Nancy and Jonathan are married, and have three children. Dustin, Lucas, Mike, Max, and Eleven love paying Dungeons and Dragons with their kids, but one day Dustin comes into contact with a Beholder in real life. He thinks it may have gotten from the upside down to the real world through one of the four gates made in Season 4. But then, super suddenly, he is zapped by the Disintegration Ray of the Beholder, and disappears, reappearing in the upside down. The Beholder won't stop until all the friends are in the upside down, and then he will zap them all with his most feared ray, the Death Ray! What will happen? Find out in this spinoff series on Netflix, coming out late 2023. (Disclaimer: Not actually real).

Lmao that terrible episode was supposed to be introducing characters for a spinoff show, it just got killed after people hated it. But don't worry, Duffers have said the spinoff won't be connected to any existing characters in the universe, because they wanna try something totally new.
So the body count is going to be huge. Charlie will die for Will because he loves his brother and will protect him at all costs. Will will die for Mike and El because he loves them both and ends up sacrificing himself. Max will finally die as she helps El to defeat Vecna. Steve will die for Nancy, but she protects him and dies in his arm to save her family, Mike, Holly, and her mom. Although Joyce has lost both Charlie and Will, she’ll see their Force ghosts and has a bitter farewell with them. To stop all the deaths of her friends and loved ones, El sacrificed herself and closed the gate behind her once and for all. The twist ending is that Kali was behind it all. She used her power to tell El’s story to a gifted youngster.

I said I think it will be the mind flayer. The dark particles etc (that was created in to the ‘mind flayer’ was already in the upside down. Dustin is right Vecna is the 5 star general. I believe the mind flayer is allowing to believe that he is in control but the mind flayer has controlled him all along. (Since he was a child)
