What Colors Work for You?

- Color Analysis is important in order to understand what colors complement you and make you glow.
In order to determine your season - Winter, Summer, Fall or Spring - you first need to identify yourself as either cool or warm.
You can do the following three tests I show in my video to help you with that
1. Gold/Silver Test ( What makes your skin glow? Your eyes look clear and bright? )
2. Vein Test ( Are you veins green or blue? Green is warm, and blue is cool )
3. Eye Test ( Are you eyes cool or warm? )
Once you have determined whether you are cool or warm, you can figure out your seasonal palette.
Now you have to look at your hair color and identify yourself as "light" or "dark"
Light hair color is blonde, light brown, light red
Dark Hair color is dark brown, dark red, and black.
If you are COOL and DARK you are WINTER
If you are COOL and LIGHT you are SUMMER
If you are WARM and DARK you are FALL
If you are WARM and LIGHT you are SPRING

Let's explain it more clearly. Your husband has very light, porcelain looking skin and cool blonde hair (versus warm blonde hair); therefore, colors on the cool side of the color wheel will look better on him. Another aspect of beauty and image is contrast, so he will look particularly good in cool, dark, vivid colors -- all on the cool side of the color wheel. In other word some greens, blues, indigos, violets with black and white also good.
Now, what makes it even more complicated is that every color in the universe can be mixed to look cool or warm. In other words, yellow, say, on the warm side of the color wheel, can be mixed to look warm or cool: a warm, sunny yellow that looks great on warm skins, mixed with white turns into a pale, cool, lemon yellow that looks spectacular on cool skin and platinum blonde hair.
Getting the picture as to why color cannot be so neatly categorized into seasons?

He looks like a light summer to me. That's why both the gold and silver work for him. Also why he looks great in many different types of blue. Light summer carries some of spring's influence, which gives him a hint of a warm tone. That's probably the cause of all the confusion in the comments.

If you have a Sephora near you, go and see if the can do a color test. They hold a little gadget up to your skin to determine the tone. I found out that I have very slightly yellow undertones, but I’m really close to neutral.

What a great video! Having your hubby as a model with a white shirt in a room with a white background makes it much easier to see the differences each color makes. I suggest using the same setup when trying to determine your undertone as well as putting a white scarf or towel around your hair if you're having trouble. I didn't really understand the season thing or think it mattered until now. I usually just pick whatever colors I like to look at & wear them but now know how to pick out ones that are more flattering. Thanks so much!

blue skies, green grass, white clouds? that's what im thinking because, other than the sun, everything else during the summer is pretty much cool colors.
If you think in terms of art and how painters use the color wheel the whole cool vs warm thing makes more sense.
I concur with what Corelle (who commented above) said.
"Summer colours" will mean different things to different people Going off what colours people wear in summer isn't a great example, because you could see both cool and warm colours. That example only works if, in your own mind, you see cool colours. Personally, I don't.
So, as with most things, it's helpful to look at the origin of whatever you are looking at. I.e. Where does the concept, idea, or phenomena come from? Then you can see what everything is based on.

Bruce Achterberg think of it as in winter you feel cold so you want to be warm and vice versa in summer
It has to do with the Colours. In the Summer there's a lot of light wich makes the colours more sharp and piercing and therefore a lot cooler, same thing in the winter, the snow reflects the sunlight and everything is a lot cooler. But in Spring and Autum there isn't that much light, there's more rain, the light isn't as piercing and the colours are warmer

Naturally, I have medium brown skin with a reddish hue to it, jet black hair with no hints of brown, red or gold and very very dark brown eyes. I'm a deep winter with some neutral qualities naturally. However, my hair is bleached and dyed to a very pale, cool blonde shade and now I'm something closer to a soft summer. I honestly didn't realize just how much of an impact changing your hair color can make to your entire color palette. It made me soften the colors of my wardrobe before I even realized why I was doing it.
Oooops I just got to the part where you try the blue colors on Alex and...you call the "summer" blue "cool" and the other one "warm" but actually...for colour theory it's the other way around: a warmer blue is the one that has a little bit of red inside like ultramarine blue and a cooler blue is the one that has more green inside like Cyan or Cobalt...
I am definitely an autumn and the colors speak loudly. I have learned to find my colors and wear them.... It makes a big difference.
This doesn't seem like a clear way to tell what colors work. Wouldn't lighting change your colors as well? Sunlight vs different indoor bulbs? My assumption is all of this needs to be done in natural sunlight but is that true? Also, what about when your skin tans, hair changes (whether it be dye or natural lightening/darkening). Would the same concepts you've talked about here also apply to makeup? Such as different red lipsticks based on the undertone color, etc. I still feel lost!

The seasonal categorization of colors in fashion went out of style about two or three decades ago. Why? Because the original categorizations left more half of the people in the world. Also, there are thousands and thousands of skin tones and millions of colors -- too complex to neatly categorize in small categories.
I agree with the draping! The chin, eyes, and teeth literally changes by just changing the drape color. Cool❤️

So I totally thought I was getting it, then I looked at the celebrities... The dark ones make sense, but to me, the spring and summer celebrities are the total opposite of what I thought,,, To me, Paris Hilton and Ellen are cool and Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston are warm... Am I missing something??

It's skin tone that's the best descriptor of which season we are, as any season can have pretty much any hair and eye colour. (also, we are only one season from birth to death, the actual season doesn't change even if we change our hair colour)

I can definitely see how he looks more harmonious when he wears the right colors. I'm stuck between summer and spring since I have naturally light brown hair. I mostly gravitate towards cool colors & silver, but I'm going to try draping different colors to see if I'm more cool or warm.

0:50 I wore white/grey/black my whole life. And I look like a zombie and dull but neutrals are easy and I don't like drawing attention to myself. BUT you give me a bright & clear red and boy am I radiant. I look HEALTHY and alive. I'm a bright spring season, btw. I know there are right shades of blue and green I can wear close to my face so that I look alive and not have to be out there with a bright red.

Great demo on color analysis. I enjoy doing color analysis. A mini color wheel or swatch wallet in your season is handy for shopping. Now, there is a computerized method that goes beyond four seasons called Color Alliance.

Me too. But most people will fall under either warm or cool. Every color has its properties: it can be a tiny bit cooler or warmer, it's just up to us to find out.

I agree with this totally. I had some great designer clothes that I sold after realizing they weren't the right colors for me at all. There was nothing I could do- they just didn't work. I got them cause the pieces were unique and slick-lol
This is very bullshit color is important, I'm a painter and I know this, a good painting has a color theme, and a saturation level as well as color assortation and color bleeding or ambient occlusion in cgi terms, but winter person, cold/warm person ? Makes no sense, sounds interesting tho, but I don't buy this crap.
I remember being SO confused about this, because all the eye/ veins/ metallics/ skin/ hair etc tests were so inconclusive for me (my veins look both blue AND green though? I wear both gold AND silver jewellery? And my veins are both blue AND green in certain areas and lighting!)
Then I asked a Clinique saleswoman and, before I even got all the way up to the counter she was 'You're definitely a neutral.' It all made a lot of sense, to be honest - of course that doesn't automatically mean I fit EVERY colour out there (since things like my dark hair and eye colour play into my need for high contrast looks), but it does explain why my 'wow' colours can be found across a range of tones and hues :)

It doesn't matter that it isn't an actual pure black color. It's about what we perceive. Some people's dark brown eyes are so dark that they seem almost black, and that's what we reffer to as black. Are black people usually actually ebony black? Are white people actually snow white?.. That's the idea.
The darker your brown eye, the cooler, was her point.
i have too dark brown eyes and they look like black. i know there are no black eyed people in the planet but this definition is easier for me.

OMG! I've always battled between choosing gold or silver! :| I've automatically always chosen dark green, dark red, dark blue, purple colors etc. Having said said I also choose the spring pink and red you showed in the 2nd part video! Hi Mimi, I'm new to your channel and now I'm watching and liking everything lol... and yes I subscribed. I'm very confused what season I really am but I know what I prefer. I was done professionally twice, first a spring and second a winter. Whenever I wore warm colours of makeup I always got asked if I was sick. But royal blue is a bit harsh on me. My veins on my left wrist are blue and sometimes a hint of purple. The veins on my left wrist are turquoise green blue. My eyes are green amber hazel with an outline of bluish grey. When I'm near water my sister says they go more blue...but technically they should be warmer because they're hazel (olive green). Ever since I was a little girl I have been obsessed with silver. I used to colour my fingernails with a silver crayon. Silver makes my skin come alive but gold and especially peach makes me look yellow and sick. My hair is a medium-dark brown. I prefer neutral or ash because golden washes me out. What season do you think I am? I'm so confused. I have always thought I was a summer but I can wear black, white, turquoise and olive green well too. Thank you in advance.

Love the video. In the 90's I had a makeover and my colors done at Beauty Works in Toronto? no longer around sadly but they used to be on Cityline all the time. I followed their advice religiously for years but have now forgotten the concept and lost my little billfold with color swatches so I am thankful for the update ; )

Alex is a good sport, you are such a sweet couple. I pegged both your seasons correctly, I seem to find this easier than some people. I did have a professional color analysis decades ago (a wonderful gift from our Mom to my sister and me) and have studied it a lot. Just a note, I’m a definite cool, muted (summer), but I do have hazel eyes, dark gray and greenish-gray predominating, with a just a little brown in the center. Many hazel-eyed, and even brown-eyed people have cool tones.
Forgot to say, the “Color Me Beautiful” analysis palette is a great tool, but after a while, you won’t need to look at your palette, you’ll just be able to distinguish your best colors.
I am spring, which I wasn't expecting, but I suppose it makes sense. I have a shirt that's the same as that "spring blue" fabric you put against Alex and whenever I wear it people always tell me how good it looks. This is very helpful since I am starting to redo my wardrobe!
