What color clothing do you recommend wearing outside while you’re painting? I know one artist that always wears an aqua colored shirt and I’ve never asked them why.
Thanks for this helpful video and i would like to suggest something, it's lot better if you could show the view you're painting so it's easy to learn by comparing the process
I really enjoy watching the creative process. Perfect videos for those who need to learn how to simplify. I am lost out there with all the leaves, twigs and branches. Need to keep it simple but isn't simple at all. So I appreciate all the tips.
Hi Roy, I've just found your channel and subscribed. All thumbs up for this nice painting and your explanations which are very helpful. I'll dive into your playlist and watch what I can find. Funny thing, I also make up stories when painting. Kind regards from Germany👍💖
Really loved the video ❤️ Gotta take two things which I learned - #1 When light is changing just block in the shadow lights #2 For trees, paint the form first and then slowly slowly add in the values Amazing lessons 😍🔥🤗💪
I really enjoy your painting videos. Thanks for posting them. It would be great if you had a view of your palette to see how you are mixing the colors.
Thanks for the helpful video! You asked about topics for future videos: Personally, I continue to struggle with layering oil over other oil that is still wet. You seem to be great at it. I'd love to see an extended video about that. Thanks again!
Wow love the tip about white shirts, reminds me of working on the camera crew of film sets where the unspoken uniform of choice is a black shirt to reduce any reflections of the camera operator behind the camera. Good stuff!
Thank you! Great explanation and the idea of telling a story is super for the artist and future viewers! I paint in pastel, always intrigued by oils but sticking with pastel for now! Excellent video!!! I subscribed!👏
Sketching first is a great idea! I understand blocking it in, then putting in the darks. But I tend to get lost in the middle from general to detail. I'm not sure if that's something you can cover, but if you could that's be great!
Hi. May I call you Roy, this is such a incredible fun video to watch and listen to. I love how you explain your work process I appreciate this a lot, new friend here, from the beginning till the end, you did a great job. Thank you for sharing 👍
Another great and informative video, Roy! And thanks for sharing your palette! As another commenter said, I would love to know your technique for painting over layers, and maybe you use a medium to help with that?
Great presentation and fun helpful commentary - I won’t wear a white shirt in the field. It would have been interesting to see how you mixed the various green with your palette - thanks
I'd love to know if you ever use acrylics and if you think your tips could apply to painting with them. Also can you talk about painting sky holes? I feel like it's so easy to get those wrong.
I find making thumbnail sketches super challenging. I know i should make them and often do but they don’t really help me and mostly just frustrate me. I should probably just focus on making a ton of them to find the groove but if you have any tips that would be great!
I would start with a red, blue and yellow + white and pick a simple object outside. Do your best just to observe it. Spend an hour sketching it out on the canvas with your paint, figuring out what will be in light and shadow and then the next hour putting pieces of paint next to each other. Don't worry about how it turns out. You will learn something if you keep your attention focused on the process.
What medium do you use? I noticed you are able to paint darks over lights without polluting the dark. I’m assuming your medium makes the paint dry quicker??
All those colors on my palette are used for mixing the shadows colors at some point. I will add a shadow mixing segment to a future video and cover it more in depth. Thanks for the feedback!
@@PleinAirSchoolmaybe it’s my adhd but I didn’t notice the nature of the music at all, I was so tuned into your process explanation. Different preferences for different people, so just speaking up for the other side of the spectrum. (Also your editing style is super fun and a breath of fresh air in the painting instruction genre. Subscribed!)
The sound was rough on this video... I had to watch it with subtitles on mute.... might do away with the music that drowned out the vocals next time, otherwise, appreciate the info and good vid!
I just watched the video again. I have no idea what this person is talking about? You are mad I have a roll of paper towel on the ground? I did have a refuse bag I was using.
I'm 25 seconds in and a bit shocked. You drive in a pick up truck filled with supplies 10m towards your spot. That's just crazy... and I don't like it at all.

I think I have never seen someone explayining painting in such a simple way and so much Details and Knowledge at the Same time. Amazig!!
That is incredibly kind, thank you!
Exactly it's facinating 👍👏👏
Excellent! Don't stop. I will watch more!!
Thanks Roslyn, a new one on layering oil paint will be out tomorrow morning!
I would never have expected the shirt to cause that much glare, crazy! Great tutorial and tips.
Me neither! haha Lesson learned!

@@Artmumdjs I'm no fashion maven, but for you Donna, I would go with neon yellow, with pink and green checkered graphics across it!
Lots of energy... loved your video. Short and to the point. Thanks for coaching us as we make art happen. Appreciate all your feedback. Makes sense.
Thanks Sandy, I appreciate it. Hope all is well over in your neck of the woods!

You got me... now I can't wait to paint an old oak tree I know of in my neighborhood!!
Good Luck!
I've never attempted plein air before & this was a simple, easy to understand vid to help me feel less intimidated.
Hope it helped!

great video, and great painting! and finally someone acknowledges how expensive some of those oil colors are. keep it up - cheers!

I just bought equipment to build myself a pochade set up, it’s super simple. I’ve never plein air painted OR oil painted to this’ll be interesting
That is awesome! Happy painting and enjoy the process. It takes time with plein air

very helpful for a way to go on thanks
Glad it was helpful!
What a cool video. It was straight to the point and well explained! Thanks a lot!
Thank you - super helpful - see you didn’t use burnt Sienna or umber - I need those to “tone down” hues but guess you can just use complimentary
Glad it was helpful! Try putting down those non toned down hues first and then knocking them back afterwards. You might like it!

I wonder why you use a nitrile glove on your dominant painting hand? I am new to this, and just started watching your videos. Thank you!
Thanks Suzanne, I use them so I can eat on days that I'm painting without worrying about munching on cadmium!
I find making thumbnail sketches super challenging. I know i should make them and often do but they don’t really help me and mostly just frustrate me. I should probably just focus on making a ton of them to find the groove but if you have any tips that would be great!
Great tips! Mind sharing why you wear a glove when you paint?
...your skin absorbs the nastiness of the oils
Yes, comment below is correct. Some of the pigments used are toxic and you don't want them to be absorbed through your skin.
Thanks!
Welcome!
I am very new to painting, and would love to attempt a plein air piece, but this would overwhelm me. Suggestions for a smaller piece?
I would start with a red, blue and yellow + white and pick a simple object outside. Do your best just to observe it. Spend an hour sketching it out on the canvas with your paint, figuring out what will be in light and shadow and then the next hour putting pieces of paint next to each other. What medium do you use? I noticed you are able to paint darks over lights without polluting the dark. I’m assuming your medium makes the paint dry quicker??
Galkyd, it speeds up the drying to almost acrylic speeds
how do you mix shadow colors and what colors do you use for that.. shadow colors are the most confusing to me..
All those colors on my palette are used for mixing the shadows colors at some point. I will add a shadow mixing segment to a future video and cover it more in depth. Thanks for the feedback!
@@PleinAirSchool that would be totally appreciated..!!

what's that easel you're using?
Hi all, .. is it o.k. to use oil painting on water color paper ..? Maybe using a thicker one ??!😢
Yeah, play around with it and expirement. If you get one you like and want to sell you might have to explain it to buyers though.
Nice
Was that Justin Vining? I just saw him in Door County last month
My, that's one lustily luxuriant, happy lurid tree! LmMFaO!!! ;) :P :o)
That is certainly one way to put it! haha
❤
What size is this one?
Azo reds and yellows are permanent, too, for those who refuse to use cads.
Yeah, whatever works and you are comfortable using.
I have such a crush on Alizarin 😂
Thanks for the interesting lesson. One downside: why that awkward music? I would like to focus on painting, not on idle noise.

Oil? I use acrylics.
Can you do a waterfall
Possibly in the future, we have waterfalls here in Indiana, they aren't gigantic drops but they would demonstrate the idea
