When we gather in large groups (sports events, 4th of July, etc.) We use the first verse as a moment of silence for all our fallen warriors. It's about all those who died at Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.

Of course every country's government do horrible things, and I know US do more than many others, but we can't just ignore the positive side of a country just because of their gov.
About the Vietnam War we Vietnamese have forgiven the Americans already and moved on. The war is already over and the culprits are dead long ago.
