Pretty much the only thing I did different was put a piece of masking tape over the can end, poke the shaft thru. This helps keep the motor clean while putting the pinion on. I first check that the pinion slides on easy enough. I prefer the Stay bright brand of flux. I put a little on the shaft. Make sure it's covering without being sloppy. Wipe off any extra. Then, I slip the pinion on and spin it. What you want to do is coat the shaft where you may want the pinion AND the inside of the pinion. If you think you may have gotten any flux on the outside of the pinion, now's the time to pull off and clean it. Now put a bit of solder on the shaft. I wipe the end of the shaft off with a paper towel then, put just a slight amount of flux on the shaft. I may wipe the shaft clean again. then put the pinion on with a tiny touch of flux on the shaft. I like to keep the end of the shaft and pinion hot while I spin the pinion on the shaft. That helps insure you have solder all the way around inside the pinion. Also, helps the pinion to center it's self radially. The reason I keep wiping the shaft is because no mater how clean your soldering tip is you can still have contamination that is determined to try and slip that pinion! Have not found any flux that works as well as the Stay Bright. See it's now Harris on the bottle... I'll use Uncle Bob's or another brand any where else. Be sneaking up on the leader in a race after running the gutter lanes and have a pinion spin... You'll learn!!! Clean the shaft, pinion and, the bushing with lighter fluid. Then oil the bushing. After putting on a pinion, I like to use plenty of oil here. Not a whole drop of oil. That's enough for two or three motors, both ends! On the endbell end of the motor, I'm like you. Very little amount of oil. During a race I only do this end after every two or three heats. I make sure when I do use the oil, I make sure I'm not using too much. Ken
A great video, but when you inserted the braid into the guide flag, all the work was done off camera :( Do you have the dimple on the brass pointing downwards on the guide or facing upwards?
@@slotracer8899 I flatten the bubble down some. If you think it's going to possibly not stay in the guide, you can open up the fold of the clip and round that bend a little, back edge of an x-axto blade helps inside the bend so that it's not quite as flat as the bend was. Ken
Love the Tutorial! Nice to see verification of some of my madness. I have a tub "O" rosin flux. Where did you get the "hypodermic" plunger dispenser and did you just pack the rosin paste into it? The tub"O" paste is a PITA.
Alan I tried to reply direct to you but it wouldnt let me.But I have one that came with some epoxy that I use.If you have a marine store nearby they should have them with the West Systems stuff for 2-3$ for a pair of them.I also scooped it out of the tub with a spoon(dont tell my wife lol) into a ziplock bag,cut the corner and piped it in like a icing bag and leave the tub for pluming ;-)

GREAT PRO INFO!! THANK YOU!!
GREAT JOB Ron!!! This has been needed for many years.

Some hobby shops sell them ready to go with the paste flux in them.

Thanks for the great tips!
