Great work, Mick! The soldering iron temperature control is important since those tips don't last long at 1000°F. I have the Ungar version of that iron... But I date myself.

If you do not cut the shaft of the armature shorter especially on a side winder drag motor it will cut right into the drag tire. Also even on road coarse motors if the shaft is to long you do not want this long shaft sticking out beyond the pinion. It is a lot cleaner looking and you can press the soldering iron right flat against the end of the pinion for precise soldering job. I have seen many racers that have spun their pinion on high end motors or got solder in the pinion by not cutting the shaft.
I hope that helps you understand why it is best to cut the shaft.

does it matter to use liquid flux or paste?

Hello J.R. A; Yes very much so. Paste flux is only good for lead wires but does not work for direct soldering to steel, like armature shafts or chassis unless it has been previously been soldered to before using liquid flux.
