Connor McDavid is already a slam dunk Hall of Famer. Even if he is a 40 point scorer for the next 10 years he still has the hardware and the peak to get in.
If he averages 40 points a year for the next 10 years there is no way he makes it in plus it will be the biggest disappointment in the history of the nhl...but let's be honest. That's not gonna happen and he will be in the HOF.
Didn't realize tavres was drafted a year before hall. But wow, those 1st overalls haven't aged well for the oilers (except for mcdavid of course) its almost expansion team levels of bad (Washington, Ottawa, san hose when they first joined the league). You need to go farther back. Say, back in the 80's? I heard there was a really good one back in 1984 -- maybe you've heard of him? And there were good ones back in the early 2000's as well --2003, 2004 & 2005 respectively. :)
McDavid the best player in NHL right now, are you fucking serious? He is really week in defence, bad in face-offs, he has awfully bad plus-minus even in this weak Edmonton and has small values of Corsi. He didn't win anything yet in NHL. I could imagine Sid or Toews or Bergeron as center of Canada 1st line in their 20. All of them were brilliant (to be honest, till 2016 Sid was only top-4 in my personal rating for centers because he was really bad in defencive game. But Sullivan was able to fix him and Jino in this component). Player like McDavid has small chances to win Stanley Cup if he wouldn't fix his weaknesses because he plays awfully bad in 5 vs 5. Playoffs is about defencive game mostly and about ability to score against the best lines in 5 vs 5 game. Right now he is much weaker than plenty of NHL forwards. If I were team manager I'd prefer to have even Ryan O' Reilly in my team instead of McDavid because he can bring more value in play-off and costs to me less money in salary cup.
