Thanks to *ONE PAGE RULES* for inspiring this build and sponsoring this video. *GRAB THIER MODELS* HERE: www.patreon.com/onepagerules I'm creating an original skirmish game called *IDOLS of TORMENT* based on my favourite set of terrain I made in early 2021. A lot of War games are based on Medieval Europe and the architecture tends to be similar. However there's a lot of potential in the structures from all around the world, from the layered ziggurat to the Middle Eastern clay or even Grecian marble there's always a another design to look into.
You know instead of a L-shaped corner, you can just move the other wall along and make a T. Maybe even make it two different buildings next to each other rather than an internal wall for one building, put a door on each side of the top of the T. Also, looking at how real buildings are constructed and collapse can show you some more interesting ways to make buildings. Like, just how much rubble there is on the base of a building or how skyscrapers are often built around solid inner cores that remain standing even if the floors fall away. Saying all that, the details in these ruins are great and I could imagine these forming some kind of town or village sinking into a red Mars-like dessert. The sands consuming the buildings.
Take the generic and tweak it into unique? That’s how you make a project that is functional and give your self a board everyone wants to play on and leads into fun memorable games. Love it.
This makes me want to see what Persian designs you could do. India, Tibet, more eastern design would be really fun with all the designs. A lot of detail though....
Really cool design, and the paint job was very effective, I think you definitely accomplished what you set out to do! For me the feature I liked best was that you put holes in the middle at the base of the wall, so many kits and builds look like a bell curve projected on a corner, with no holes or gaps in the middle or on the base, the only damage is around the edge, this way really sells that out was a building more than just a generic line of site blocker. Well done!
If you need THE HACK tm. Airbrush is an easy sell, its small its cool its not a lot of hassle, and then once you get metallic sparkles everywhere like you fought someone covered in glitter its easy to then go "well this is clearly annoying i should fix this before it becomes a problem" and then build the booth... Its how i convinced myself i needed a booth!
That’s what I did!! I was looking myself and then saw all the rest each he did. Then just bought what he recommended. Lol. And built a portable station.
Hey dude, airbrush is awesome, but even with a beefy extractor fan and multiple filters, I'm really struggling with dangerous pm2.5 particle levels, which persist at extremely high levels for many hours. I know this sounds like fear/panic but just a heads up, especially if you have others in the house, it's an invisible health issue that I don't think many hobbyists take seriously enough. Hopefully you can make a suitable setup
This is Fantastic! Thanks Jeremy! I'm gearing up to run a Brancalonia campaign, (Italian D&D)and now I need to build some Italian/Spanish inspired terrain! Perfect inspiration!
I'm glad that green foam is good, I've been wanting to try foam terrain building and that's all the stores near me have. It seems like every hobby youtuber I watch always uses the pink panther stuff
Reminds me a little of the many beautiful forts in Rajasthan. I'd love to do a build inspired by Jantar Mantar, which is sort of a park full of enormous astronomical instruments that would make great scatter terrain. Love to see less eurocentrism in gaming!
That’s a great build. Love the windows and the details along the wall. Also the way the walls have depth and different layers really makes them more realistic looking
What I love most is how you can use it for both SCIFI and fantasy. Allot of times Ruin seem to cator to one side based on the details applied to it. And thos that try to achieve both usually suffer by simplisity. Good work. Love everything as always.
I made some generic ruins just a bit ago. The one thing that made them more interesting is that they had a skeleton of Construx toys that a friend gave me. Using those meant I was pulled away from straight walls and right angles. Some stone wallpaper imported from England and some dollar store clipboards that had a tile like texture added easy detail. Then I poured on sprue bricks and kitty litter. I also used the bricks and litter to make rubble hills that could mix in but just be hills rules wise.
If someone wants references for cool non-european gothic architecture I should recomend arab and mozarab architecture and gardens of Spain and some things in 20th spanish architecture. If you want someinstant reference for some of these magnificents pieces of art: In Star Wars Ep.2 Naboo is the "Plaza España of Sevilla". El Escorial is also a good reference. And for some arabesque and gothic references: -El Micalet. -La Torre del Homenaje (Jérica) -La Alhambra of Granada. Edit: special mention to the mosque cathedral of Córdoba.
I've recently had the idea of making onion/dome topped buildings using Christmas baubles, which could fit into Slavic, Indian or Middle-Eastern inspired buildings. There's a fully rounded half, and also a half with a point on the top (to put the string around the tree branch) to mount a statue or some kind of icon/ornament to. Additionally, they come in different textures. Some are fully smooth, some have fancy ridges and curves on the surface, and some have a diamond pattern. That's about 6 different variations on the domes. With all of those different options, I think baubles would make for excellent domes. I haven't tried it just yet, but I'm excited to do so. Sorry for the wall of text lol
Haha its nice seeing you mention the styrodur bricks that we've been using. For some reason, the foam in construction here isn't used in the thin sheets that you have and instead it's all styrodur (with a textured outward face...). As a result if I want to closely replicate something you did, I have to cut the brick into sheets (and I don't have a hot wire, its all blade baby!) or just change the approach entirely. Then again that's only good for me and my creativity, it's kinda more fun that way! :D This build came out nicely!
I *absolutely love* this video! The timing couldn't be better, since I've recently taken an interest in Turkish history, and want to add an army inspired by the Ottoman janissary corps to my setting.
Love all the artistic decision making for this piece. It definitely looked scary and gaudy before that brown coat and skipping washed for this piece was the right call. This is a new favorite
There is something about the dynamic colors you used, the scaling of the texture and details, and the lack of a wash that gives these a uniquely cinematic look. I don't know how else to put it than it ticks all the boxes for my brain to easily be transported to imagining a real battle around those ruins.
I was a bit confused about your sourcing problems at first, because it was super easy for me for the past 30 years. Then you explained that Styrodur is a German thing that you don't get that easily and i felt blessed to live there.
I o T - Can't wait! I like how this could be a monastery or just a central village building. Love terrain that isn't generic but could still be used for different stuff.
I have updated and "enhanced " a lot of my old terrain. It took a bit of time but it is now more in line with my newer crafts. Great video man 👍...by the way...good to see you getting Into one page rules 😁. It is awesome.
This couldn't have came at a better time! I am currently working on a army that is desert based (Warmachine-Protectorate)and needed some ideas for scatter terrain.
I would suggest sketching out a combat zone with a relatively balanced set of cover structures both man-made and natural. From there, you can figure out what pieces you would need and go from there. Style can be decided when sketching! Once you have a mini map and a landscape sketch, you can make your pieces accordingly
A while ago, I started 3d modeling terrain inspired by a couple of your builds (the water fountain I think was my first) and have gone on to have a small but successful Patreon. I wanted to say thank you for the inspirational videos that helped me get started.
Mr. Craft, these things are nothing short of AMAZING. Taking a basic idea and adding some unique greeble and gubbins is something I experiment with a lot and this has given me lots of inspiration!
Beautiful building; feels a lot less dead-tech/grim-dark and a lot more like southern Spain during the Middle Ages! I am excited about the new foam biz in the works; blue 1 inch from Amazon or green 1 inch from Lowe’s is about all that is affordable-available in Texas, Jeremy. Thanks for posting another gift of a clip!
Damn good build! Like everything about this one. The final paint slinging works really good. Love the build music too. I hope to see you expand this style with a few more builds. Would love to see more. Hope you get the new foam source worked out.
Great video as always. Very interested in the foam you found. It looks like it holds texture far better than the usual blue or pink xps insulation foam.
love the aesthetic of this build! my entire campaign and homebrew setting was motivated by the same disinterest in the same grey-brown-green medieval european settings that are ubiquitous in D&D. i ended up drawing inspiration from turkish, persian/iranian, arabian, and indian subcontinental cultures, fashion, and architecture for different races and locations. the best part has been learning about real-world places and people and histories.
I bought some Arabian catfolk, and this video is quite inspiring on how having a set for the table quick and easy. Really looking forward your skirmish game, as I was a helldorado player for a while 🙂
Lovely! That pseudo-morrocan aesthetic really brings the Mobius/Chronicles of Riddick vibe. I can see why the corner piece is so popular, but I can't help feeling we're not asking enough of our terrain. Are there ways to make it useful in-game beyond built-in dice towers and turn trackers? Are there options for creating interesting choices beyond choke-points and elevation? Love the One Page Rules minis, by the way. Seriously considering kit-bashing some Duchies of Vinci guys into a Stargrave crew.
I must say .... you only said really once I think... I am impressed with the new compressed version of commentary and the style of the video I really love it =P
Great video as always and I´m totally with you with the generic corner skeleton terrainpieces^^, they work, but they more look like unfinished constructionsites than ruins. And yeah we have great xps foam over here and its really good to get over here in Germany, not the cheapest material but great for building terrain and you made a good choice with the proxxon hotwirecutter and they also made a bigger one^^
Glad to see another video. I hope you get things worked out with your cracked screen on the printer. I just started getting into mini painting, after seeing this, I want to go back to some terrain.
Many thanks for this. During your intro, I looked over my shoulder at my collection of ... vaguely gothic corner ruins. I'd never even questioned building them that way before. Time to look through my art history textbooks for ideas to steal!
The samurai guys (we know who are they inspired by) could be a race in a fantasy setting, similar to the illithid. Space faring, stranded, and all that jazz.
One set of inspiration that I've been looking at lately is the Catholic missions in the Southwest United States, it's got that sort of Andalusian Spanish/Portuguese/Moorish hybrid architecture that could really make your terrain stand out.
With the internet and all of the ruined buildings around the world (whether from time, natural disasters, wars, simple neglect) there are so many ways to get inspiration outside of the typical gothic European style. - Shifting lands looks to be a great source for windows and bits, too!
Amazing! Really reminds me of the Greek/Minoan ruins of Knossos in Crete (Assassin's Creed Odyssey has a great representation of the Palace of Knossos).
My roommate is painting up some Haqqislam for an Infinity demo board we're putting together, so seeing some more middle eastern inspired terrain would be awesome!
Worked out really well, it's a similar shape to the usual ruins but the oriental/African details really set it apart, as well as the really cool colour scheme.
Awesome build and especially the paint - because of you I have finally fallen into the rabbit hole that is airbrushing so now this doesn't seem impossible anymore. Also it makes me happy you are with OPR - great stuff. Would be interesting to see a sort of an Ottoman themed board. Cheers!
Great build and gave me some motivation to get my head out of gothic tracery for a bit. I am very excited at the prospect of getting some better foam here in the US. Thanks Jeremy!
I bought a load of the corner ruins in MDF that were on sale. I also bought same packs of 1 foot square cheap wood floor tiles. Leaving a inch all round for a sidewalk I glued the wall section to the to them make whole ruined building. much more intresting that just a corner.
Love the different look and results! The colour scheme reminds me of the buildings at Knossos on Crete a little bit. Another cracking good video from you, packed full of inspiration and techniques!
So for primer you can use some good old rattle can primer from rustoleum (they bought out testors) or duplicolor and decan it for use in a spray gun. (plenty of videos showing how its done, and its a great savings)
That aesthetic is amazing and has multiple uses for both fantasy and sci-fi games (and is absolutely on point for the Infinity Haqqislam faction as well). The ground floor openings really take it away from the generic terrain (probably a holdover from the old 'ground floor not playable' GW rules) and give it a 'high-end' feel. Clearly I've watched enough that my first thought on the windows (after recognizing that the thickness you were working with was 1/2") was "without having to get something from shifting lands cuz shipping, I wonder if I could play around with Granny grating and get a similar effect".
Big ‘someday’ hobby purchases include airbrush (with spray booth etc), Proxxon cutter, and resin printer. In the meantime, I’ll keep cobbling together bits and pieces from whatever cheap and cheerful things I can grab from my crafting hoard and the dollar store. :)
I challenge you to find a solution where you incorporate the remains of a roof to further remove the traditional corner ruin structure. A roof can of course create issues with placing the minis, so that is something to take into account. Challenge accepted? :)
I just realized that if you use the BMC mod podge primer and THEN use a texture roller on top of that it is significantly more crisp and higher quality than if you texture roll it first and then use the BMC mod podge primer.
Hey Black Magic Craft: DnD ✅ Cyberpunk ✅ Lovecraft horror ✅ Scifi ✅ Got anything for Vampire The Masquerade? A downtown, a haven for the Vamps, clubs? 👀
DAT FOAM THO... Very cool you're working on sourcing out an equivalent for that German Magic Foam, Gerard's been rubbing it in with his awesome detail in foam for far FAR too long. Great vid man, solid new take on a classic.
Ha! I’ve been doing a Middle East meets European and/or Tatoine for my Tomb of Annihilation builds. Not 100% to the ToA building description but it’s been about reuse than accuracy. I asked Shifting Lands for a Moroccan looking foam roller and he built it! Woot (not sure if he built bc of my suggestion or if it was in the works but I don’t care either way). Your ruins look amazing!!

This was really good! You should try and make your own airbrush primer... Considering how much you use it.
What are the fifth elements t style necrons at the end with the white space samurai?
@@Steve_Deadload from one page rules as well 😉
Why not make T shaped ruined buildings instead?
A lot of War games are based on Medieval Europe and the architecture tends to be similar. However there's a lot of potential in the structures from all around the world, from the layered ziggurat to the Middle Eastern clay or even Grecian marble there's always a another design to look into.
Could definitely think of the crusades campaign setting.
and none of them is actually grey, not even the european ones!
You know instead of a L-shaped corner, you can just move the other wall along and make a T. Medieval Spanish architecture with its blend of Christian and Muslim influenced designs is a really cool source too.
I have been wanting to do an ankor wat themed build. I’d love to see more like that. I also want to see more mesoamerican ancient ruins .
As much as I like building generic terrain, it goes to show how just changing something like theme or pallet can make something really unique!
I could see those ruins being on Tallarn (WH40k), or be Haqqislam (Infinity) ruins, or could be used with Al-Qadim (AD&D rpg).
Don't forget Araby (Warhammer Fantasy).
Well done!
Totally, plus I think it’s nice for game play to have some other openings.
I need to convince my wife I should set up an air brush station. Watching a lot of your work is leading me to really want to try air brushing.
Can you let me know how?
That’s what I did!! I was looking myself and then saw all the rest each he did. Then just bought what he recommended. Lol. And built a portable station.
Try it man. Air brushing is amazing and great for terrain. Worth the investment if anything put money to the side until you save for it and get it.

Love the chunky stucco look, and those windows really add alot of character! Its nice to see some colour, instead of the regular old GREY
Reminds me a little of the many beautiful forts in Rajasthan. I'd love to do a build inspired by Jantar Mantar, which is sort of a park full of enormous astronomical instruments that would make great scatter terrain.

There's so many things in this that could have gone wrong but didn't, it looks amazing.
So happy to see you break out of the Eurocentric grim dark. There is so much more interesting in ancient architecture to pull from.
Turned out fantastic! Love how the wall damage looks, with the clay colour coming through behind the paint colour

The windows and the side trim really add a lot to the ruins. The color scheme is great.

My girlfriend and I finally tried Frostgrave and now we’re hooked and are working on expanding our collection of terrain
I really liked this one! Previously I also wasn't interested in ruins, but I kinda want to make a set of these.
I would suggest sketching out a combat zone with a relatively balanced set of cover structures both man-made and natural. From there, you can figure out what pieces you would need and go from there. Style can be decided when sketching! Once you have a mini map and a landscape sketch, you can make your pieces accordingly
What I am beginning to find is the more different, non boring color schemes, the more unique and fun it turns out. Love the boldness and the ruins!
Loving the soundtrack on this episode! Also, anything to break up the same-old terrain is a great idea. Love it!
Good tips. There are so many historical architecture styles that can be applied to gaming terrain to make interesting tables.
That looks frikken great! One of the best paint jobs that you have done!! The textures are perfect, that is a great job!
Nicely done! It's always good to have different themes in terrain. Even cities have different architecture, so the same can go for ruins.
Damn good build! Like everything about this one. The final paint slinging works really good. Love the build music too. I hope to see you expand this style with a few more builds. Would love to see more. Hope you get the new foam source worked out.

Love the use of the Squidmar limited release air brush!! @8:16
Great video as always and I´m totally with you with the generic corner skeleton terrainpieces^^, they work, but they more look like unfinished constructionsites than ruins.

wow, these have a really awesome style and colouration too them, and a theme that can still fit in to just about anything.
The Ruins came out awesome, very nice paintjob..
And those minis look sweeeeeet!

Shifting lands looks to be a great source for windows and bits, too!
This turned out incredible! Great stuff, I love that you stuck with it and it turned so great.
I really like the colour choices, the end result looks great! Unique texture for the walls, very different :)
I love it, Jeremy! It's beautiful and very Turkish/Middle Eastern-looking!
Amazing! Really reminds me of the Greek/Minoan ruins of Knossos in Crete (Assassin's Creed Odyssey has a great representation of the Palace of Knossos).
Great video. Please keep us up to date on the XPS foam sourcing. Thanks!
Looks great! I think this type of terrain would be a good oppotrunity to experiment with pigments for weathering.
Awesome build and especially the paint - because of you I have finally fallen into the rabbit hole that is airbrushing so now this doesn't seem impossible anymore. Also it makes me happy you are with OPR - great stuff. Would be interesting to see a sort of an Ottoman themed board. Cheers!
Yeah, I really like this piece. I'd be thrilled to see more of the setting.
Oh wow I love the character on those ruins. Great job!

Oh wow! I was a little concerned before you added the brown over the top 😝
Looks freaking awesome
Hear Hear! Love the style. Something with a cracked domed roof to go with those corners and all hat's would be off :)
So for primer you can use some good old rattle can primer from rustoleum (they bought out testors) or duplicolor and decan it for use in a spray gun. (plenty of videos showing how its done, and its a great savings)
I can't wait to get my crafting room set up, I absolutely love this style and want to try my hand at it 😍
That aesthetic is amazing and has multiple uses for both fantasy and sci-fi games (and is absolutely on point for the Infinity Haqqislam faction as well).
I also think that if you make the structure interesting enough it can read differently even without fancy windows.
These look awesome. I love the decision to switch up the architectural style and colour.
Nice! These ruins remind me a lot of the one beach map from Halo 3, with the water plant.
This is such a beautiful piece. I'd love to see an intact building in this style. I might just have to build one 😎
Great build! Good idea indeed to think about different ways to build corner pieces and ruins 🙌
In Brazil we dont find xps foam. This material isnt used here, even for houses building. We can order by internet but its very expensive
This is not something I would build but still enjoying chilling and watching you work. And now I might make some. Those final shots convinced me.
man i love this design, desert ish I thing its rare to see one like this design.. love it please more of this.
Whatever it is that you found in this project, please keep exploring it. ❤️
I just realized that if you use the BMC mod podge primer and THEN use a texture roller on top of that it is significantly more crisp and higher quality than if you texture roll it first and then use the BMC mod podge primer.
Great build man! That brown filter is mint!
These are amazing! I love the colors on these!
The texture you get out of foam continues to stun me.
this build is amazing. the foam color makes me wish you would make a castle greyskull. maybe like at mini size :P
These type ruins would look great for my Darksun campaign. Love your work and thanks for sharing.
"I made this title but I don't mean this title"
Thank you Jeremy

Got anything for Vampire The Masquerade? A downtown, a haven for the Vamps, clubs? 👀
Turned out excellent!! Very fun and a new twist on something to give a try.
Loved the awkward transition, you should do more of those ^^
Favorite primer? Tremclads Acrylic matte black
