Holy MOLY that Anthony Fantano pick scratch mention unlocked a vault of unwanted memories for me. My music friends from high school would take his word as gospel and it angered me to no end. I rewatched that video just now and it only reassured me that I hate him just as much today as I did ten years ago.
It has only gotten worse
He has some interesting takes every now and then, but he comes off as insufferable and an elitist. He claims to be into extreme music, and then shits on entire genres without recognizing artists that either break the mold of their roots or grow into something more.
Listening to the ep with the Spotify playlist open - pausing the pod and jamming each song as you discuss it, top tier experience 10/10 would recommend

I’d argue the heaviest Slipknot breakdown is Eyeless which is the track right after (sic). The last 30 seconds of Eyeless is hate mosh gold that people often overlook imo.
Eyeless is a banger, but it’s all about that Disasterpiece breakdown for me 🤙

I gotta go with In the Trenches by Dying Fetus on this one. I see red whenever I hear it. Also, the fact that they can put out an album like Reign Supreme two decades into their career is pretty unbelievable.

Straight up got goosebumps to the Purple Heart breakdown mention.

#1 is “Revenge on Society” by Blood for Blood.
2. “Wake Up Dead”-Megadeth (honorable mention - “The Conjuring”)
3. “Domination”- Pantera.
4. “A Perpetual Need”- Crowbar.
5. “Hold My Own”- Biohazard.
For Metallica, I’d go “Damage, Inc.” or “Dyer’s Eve” over Blackened, although that’s a great one.
Also gotta mention “Suffer to Return Harder” by Terror. Not really a breakdown, but the chorus is beyond epic & spin-kickable.

As a huge cannibal corpse and various young brothers projects fan, I immediately could hear Scourge of Iron being paid its homage in the Rest In Pain intro on that call it war EP from eyes of the lord. I can’t be the only person who has noticed this. Mad respect

When I was tryna explain why 43%burnt was one of my top breakdowns to a genZ coworker, I had to say on its own its a sick breakdown but if you can picture how nuts everyone goes live you understand

Also forgot to say HUGE respect to Colin for putting “The Doorway” by Neurosis in there. Times of Grace is my personal “Master Killer”. The more obvious Neurosis choice would be “Locust Star” off of Through Silver In Blood. Massively epic, planet-leveling breakdown near the end.
Hoping for some Candiria mentions but either way, I know this is going to be dope.
Everyone loves ringworm but never shows up for ringworm shows

When I saw Triptykon, they played that part maybe 10 bpm slower than on the record and it was one of the best moments of my life

Scourge of Iron gave me the same reaction, that fuckin riff actually put a frown on my face
When it comes to Converge, for me it’s the riff at the end of Reptilian, the final riff on The Dusk in Us. That shit hits hard.

No love for Pantera - Slaughtered from far beyond driven? I’m just surprised it wasn’t mentioned. That’s gotta be their most vocally visceral and blisteringly brutal track. The end slows down and doesn’t sound like a typical breakdown imo but I still consider it as such.
I was also surprised that one didn’t get a mention when discussing that album. Disgustingly heavy song.

At EXC's "last show" was the first time they did the stop for GSE. That many people yelling I AM! STRAIGHT EDGE! was amazing.
So my Justice Replaced by Revenge story. I went to a fest early in the day and rolled my ankle. Pain the rest of the night. Then later that night I walked in on another fest in Cleveland and Ringworm had just started to play Justice, I bolted to the stage and didn't feel any pain for that two minutes and seven seconds.
I'm actually shocked that when they were talking about Metallica and shit like that having proto-breakdown parts that neither of them mentioned Into The Void by Black Sabbath. That shit came out in 1971 and the riff change when the verse hits would straight up make me hospitalize people if I ever heard it covered at a show.
i am still very early into this. but I swear to god guys... wings of scarlet, killing tomorrow -for me- is hands down the most savage over the top most dramatic breakdown. it's a good minute and a half of breakdown, build up into 3 more breakdowns.
Neurosis is the heaviest band ever
I'm glad Slipknot made this list. I barely listen to them anymore, but they laid the groundwork for my love of hardcore. Out of all those nu-metal bands from that era, they seemed to have the most hardcore/punk influence. When I go back and listen to their self-titled album and Iowa, I can feel exactly how my taste in hardcore was influenced by them.

"Forsaken" has the hardest Converge breakdown imo

Mosh part of Melvins - Oven is top tier
Unconventional pick, but the final riff on Ocean Planet by Gojira has an effect on me that no other part in music quite has. Especially when it comes back in after he says "the ocean planet is on burm" and "burn" echoes a couple times. Just so heavy. Production on point. Drums sound amazing. The pick scrape. Makes me want to murder like few things ever have.
Another unconventional pick, which is by Gojira. The spaghetti western sounding breakdown on explosia is one of my favorite breakdowns of all time.

Hardest breakdown in the world has to be 43% Burnt, its in E standard and the way the song builds up to the 1 bar of silence and the snare hit before the breakdown. By far the hardest riff in existence.

I really want to add SOMETHING off Far Beyond Driven, like Strength beyond Strengths breakdown, or after the solo on 5 minutes alone which is quite possibly the heaviest break of all time…. DIME AND VINCE WERE GODS ( edit… not the break for the solo in SBS, the 20 seconds of riff w the half time change in the drums and Dime riffing the E-F riff, THAT FUCKER! Wow!)
