Dear Jamie, I am the RUclipsr who shot and put up Tom saabs video. I cried the day he died and put up the video as a tribute to him.
I was hugely fortunate to have worked with him and seen the master at work. There are too many incidents to narrate about him but I'll tell you one that's relevant here. I was an AD on the set of Samvidhaan, coordinating scripts and artists. One time I was to go and meet him to give him a few pages that he was to perform in a few days. The language was Urdu but the script was written in Roman English. Tom Saab saw it and shook his head and asked if I could give the script written in Urdu. I said Tom Saab, besides you, no one on set has either their Urdu or even Hindi as impeccable as you. He had a hearty laugh. From then on I made it a point to at least write his portions in Devnagari before I gave it to him.
I have seen few people so very rooted in the Indian ethos, traditions and culture than him. And that's why I wept the day he died cause I knew his death was a loss not just to the Indian film industry, but this great nation of India.

Don't get upset about 20% people who are ignorant and question your identity. Be happy about the 80% people who appreciate you and your father. Most people especially Gen Z don't do any research before talking, they are lazy and are impatient.Recently my blood was boiling when I saw a Gen Z girl calling Lata Mangeshkar "overrated" and a "buddhi". I loved Tom Alter. I used to make a point to watch his movies. His passing away was a tragedy. His command over Hindi and Urdu always impressed me. I loved his acting too.

I know exactly what you are going through Jamie. My parents and grandparents were born in India. Grandparents spoke broken Hindi but my parents spoke Hindi especially my Dad. He taught me Hindi and I did the rest. I became very fluent in speaking Hindi listening to Bollywood songs played on the radio. On going to school learnt to write Hindi. I was given a second look when I spoke Hindi and i sometimes wondered why as I was born in India. However I migrated to Australia long ago. When asked I said I was from India you wouldn’t believe what I was asked. “ Where are your feathers“ Some people🙄😲🙏🏼

Just sharing a memory I have of Tom sir. I think it was 2015 or 2016, but he was in a production of Old Man and the Sea that came to my home city in GJ. I was a teen and enthralled by his presence the entire time. I think I was able to stutter out how incredible he was to him afterwards, and he took the compliment so graciously. It was my first real live "play" experience that solidified my love for theater.
Truth be told, I hadn't a clue just how influential he was (was raised outside India for a while), but I went home, did my research, and became a fan for life. Been following you since, and I relate in small ways to that struggle of being perceived as other, and of encountering people that don't seem to recognize your Indianness is authentic just bc (in my case) it's concurrent with my americanness, christianness, etc. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing!

Hello Jamie, I am a regular RUclips watcher and accidentally came across one of your vlogs. I at once became subscriber! I studied in Wynberg-Allen and was a great admirer of Steve Alter (maybe your chacha I think) for his long distance running. The way he ran the race was amazing!! I even competed with Joey Alter( the youngest, I think) in athletics: in fact there was one Purewal boy from SG; the three of us Joey (Woodstock), Purewal (SG) and me (Allen) were constantly competing on the sports field! I even knew Tom, he was better known to my elder brother. Now I am in my 60s and living a life of a recluse. I remember Mussoorie and Dehra of those time; your vlogs brought back many memories and tears! If you read this please do reply, there is so..ooo much to share.

I have seen this video a thousand times. I can somewhat relate to this as I am a South Indian born and brought up in Mumbai. There have been many instances when people ask me how do you speak so good Hindi. The worst thing that I heard was kya ye aapka asli naam hai kyuki South Indians ka naam lamba hota hai😂. Worst thing is I face this here in Canada too by the Indians living here.
The immediate need to establish who they are in relation to language/food habits and the stereotypes portrayed by bollywood. I wish I could laugh it off and say it is all done in humor. I hope u develop a thick skin to all this nonsense and focus more on ur work.
