I have a much older version of this badged Frisser Rossman with the Jaguar logo which belonged to my mother. Must be over 30 years old but still a fantastic machine and is certainly heavy! It has the same fully opening front and threading diagram. The knife can also be easily moved out of the way. However it does not have the coverstitch facility and I have no idea if the gadget you fitted to the upper looper could be attached to my machine.
It is the only overlocker I have used and I must say that I was tempted to try any of the newer machines you have been trialling, until today when you convinced me that I already have a superior machine.
I have been a home sewer since the 1960s when I took my Needlework as one of my O-levels! Over the years I have made clothing for myself and children, home furnishings, alterations, repairs of all kinds, and I am still learning through the medium of RUclips. Modern machines are much more sophisticated and the results are therefore more professional so the incentive is greater, especially when so much ready-to-wear is full of loose threads and nests.
You are an inspiration and I love everything you do, including reminding us how to take care of our machines.

Hi Abi. Thank you for a great review and informative videos. I bought a Jaguar 489 a couple of years ago and love it. Being a novice overlocker user I find the metal seam slider a great help and the fact that the left side of the machine opens for access. I wonder if you could please explain how the seam markings on the white plastic to the right of the blade work ? - I haven't been able to figure that out! Thanks. (I noticed that the Jaguar machine appears to be almost identical to the "Babylock Vibrant Serger" shown on You Tube videos apart from the 2 tension wheel knobs instead of sliders).
    .
I agree with your comments about Jaguar. I wonder if you could explain about the measure

About 20 years ago I bought the Creative, the Frister and Rossman dupe, I used it about 2 times, went on second holiday/ honeymoon and came back to it not working, finding this out from my very bright honest little girl, she told me the relative in charge had a little play, with my expensive to me, new toy, they never have owned up to it, I can only assume it was jammed up, which threw out the inside timing, I tried to fix it with regular timing, as I did not have funds to pay someone to do it, and struggled and struggled, it’s still in the box to this day, I’m going to get it fixed, but after things have settled down again with Covid, it’s exactly the same as the Jaguar and a solid machine, and the fact you can open them right up is amazing, great machines.

Bought the same model when I was sewing scrubs and gowns for the NHS earlier in the year on recommendation from our local sewing supplies shop. Never used one before. Very easy to thread. Used both 3 and 4 thread overlocking. It had quite a hammering making garments all day for weeks on end. Still going strong. Two improvements for me. I didn’t get on terribly well with the sliding guide as a lot of what I was doing was quite curved. The seam allowances shown on the machine itself would be useful. I’ve added it with masking tape. Also the removable cover on the front. (I use it the other way up as a bin), falls off very easily. Other than that, for a beginner like me it has been a super machine. Very pleased with it. This Jaguar however is definitely not from the same company that makes cars!

Abi, I can’t thank you enough for your review. I bought the Jaguar 2015 back in June of this year. My very first overlocker. I had no clue how to use it. I was having issues with it (my fault, but I didn’t know that at the time] and found the problems overwhelming, so was ready to send it back. This morning I tried again. With some serious tweaking and new needles this time the stitching was almost perfect. Ive so much to learn. Your review has given me the confidence that I made a good choice after all. Thank you 🌸

As a newbie it was so informative, as your videos always are. You are the best! Now I’m off to find how I do a flat lock seam now you have told me that is what is needed for children’s wear. The closest I found was on eBay, shipping from Canada and the cost was exorbitant. I will live in serger envy . . . 🤢

Abi, Thanks for the video. I’m looking for my first overlocker and only started sewing this year. As a beginner which one do You personally recommend. Should I be going for something that has the ability to be used as a 2 thread or just go with a 3 or 4 thread? I’ve looked online at the Brother 2104D /3034DWT 4234D Janome 9300DX and now the Jaguar 489! It’s truly mind-boggling!

    • @AbisDen
      @AbisDen  4 года назад +2

All Brothers are exactly the same, they just offer different features for an extortionate extra,. The project runway, the 1024dm the amazon, the blue range - ...I would put the singer s14-78 and Necchi Ov above any brother model The Brother is not in the same realm as Janome for performance however the 8000 and 9000 series from Janome are not their best in my personal POV, so many come in for repair or they’re easier to buy second hand because they are fiddly to use. I love my Janome 634d which I’ve had 20+years. The jag seems fabulous but this is my first play with a Jaguar. I also think babylock is worth considering.

Abi’s Den Abi’s Den thanks for your detailed reply. Lidl is having their singer sale today. The model is S010L. I'm wondering how different it's to the 14-78? Babylocks are very expensive, the only one in my budget would be the Success /Lilly model. I honestly thought that you really enjoyed the Brother machines? I Didn't think you'd put the Singer or Necchi in preference. (well except for the price.) Thank you as always for reviewing these for the viewers.

trolleydolly70 Hi. I do not have much experience of overlockers but bought the Jaguar 489 a couple of years ago (because it seemed value for money at that time) and love it. It feels very solid and agree with the comments Abi made about Jaguar. I was very surprised when watching recently a "Babylock
Vibrant Serger Demo" on You Tube (Sew It Online - 2 May 2020) how it appeared to be pretty much identical to my machine and the 2015DF (- even down to the instruction manual diagrams! (The only difference I could see was the 2 tension knob wheels instead of the sliders on the left of my machine). Hope this info helps.

    Hi Abi,
Great video thank you very much! My mum bought me this machine earlier this year and I've only just plucked up the courage to use it (I'm a novice sewer). However I have just snapped the threading hook on the end of the upper looper (I'm too clumsy!). Is there a stitch I can use without the upper looper? When I tried to use the two thread converter it popped right out because it didn't have the thread hook to insert in to. I just don't understand overlockers enough to know if/how to bypass the upper looper.
    Thank you.

Abi’s Den I have the Jaguar 099 model. Pretty sure it’s the same or very similar to the 2015, with exception that the 2 needle tensions are dials instead of sliders. Looper tensions are sliders, & threading of loopers is identical to the 2015. Width dial range is 4 to 7. Stitch length dial range is 1 to 4, plus an R for rolled hem & P for picot stitch. Diff feed slider bar range is 0.7 to 2. Very interested to hear that this might be made by same manufacturer as Babylock. I did learn when buying my machine last year that Jaguar is a brand of Frister & Rossman Epochlock known for excellent build quality. F&R brands overlocker tutorials can also be seen on various RUclips videos. Loved your tutorial - thanks Abi.
