Another excellent bit of info on the 1KD piston cracking issue, awaiting the next video on the Injectors..
Mate loving your videos. Cheers, Rik.
In the 1990's we were told to scrap the Yota exhaust system and replace it with a larger diameter piping system to open it up to help breathing freely.
good on ya for imparting quality content mate
Brilliant. Thanks a million for sharing your knowledge !
Yes , makes sense to me!
Great explanation...thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video and very good experience that actually makes sense. Having been through this costly exercise myself before, the million dollar question is of course how to fix or prevent this from happening again?
Redesign of pistons or stronger pistons overall to handle the heat.
Here is a tradesperson who knows what he is talking about. No misinformation. I suggest you listen to the truth about the 1KD pistons. Long hauls, high rpms and heavy loads cause cavities on the top of the piston. If a cavity develops on the edge of the combustion chamber this then will lead to the hole cracked piston situation. Nothing to do with the injectors as this was tested by Toyota engineers in 2014. The findings were the pistons are to blame for this failure, not the injectors. Toyota's own words.
So an EGT gauge will help? Making sure to keep the engine running cool when towing or in the sand.
Do you think the craze of bad tunning + Chips is making the problem more prevalent?
Loving my V6 Hilux! 1GR-FE is king.

King of using fuel
petty life
My 150 series prado v6 is the bomb it will do 500k with basic maintenance makes 200kw and is still good on juice petrol is way cheaper than an engine :)
Hie
What are the mechanical effects of not installing balancing shafts on a 1kd block and blocking the oil galleries by turning the back bushes.
What a well educated explanation of this prob, I just bought my first Hilux 2011 hl2 D4D (think it's a KUN25? Noticed rattling noise on acceleration so bought a bottle of injector cleaner(fuel tank additive) but it seems to have gone a bit worse? It's around 1500-2000 rpm any advice plz.
Same problem, noise starts at around 1400 and disappears after 1800 rpm. Have you solved your problem?
What is the cause of the crack happening?
This isn't a peripheral engine problem but a direct piston cylinder and one would have expected toyota in their controlled engine evaluation would have picked up this issue
Hello Pete. Great videos. Well done. I just had an 15reg hilux with 70k on the clock. in with piston skirt failure. Is this something you’ve seen? Many thanks ben
Hi good day what about the 2kd engine any information on them ?
how many 2005-2006 1KD's have you seen?
turning off the EGRsystem can speed up this process?
turbo timer. or just let it cool down before you turn it off?
whats the solution?
Would a EGR delete help prevent the issue ?
Do you ship to the U.S.?
Is this just post 2006 engines, when there was a piston re-design?
Sir, what's the fuel consumption on 1kd engine in 2007 vigo (approx)
Great video mate. Cheers for the info. What would be the solution then? Is it something that can be avoiding by modifying the injectors? Would be great to see a correction for this if there is one. Cheers again mate!
Hi Luke,
Yes there is something I have worked out that will help, I will be putting it into a video soon. Thanks Pete.
@@enginecare1417 thanks for the video , looking forward to the follow up. We just got a kun26r with 355kms on the engine
A good video but why hasn't Toyota fixed the problem with a better designed piston like a real diesel eg cat Detroit Cummings ues Two peace piston with steel crown and gudgeon pin with a aluminium skirt?
They discontinued the 1KD engine and replaced it with the 1GD they never fully addressed the problem
Do these 1kd engines have removable sleeves or is it just the block
No it doesn't have a removable sleeve
So is there a replacement piston that doesn't have this thermal expansion cracking problem?
hope so!
The Euro5 engines got stronger upgraded pistons in European models
When the pistons crack, is it usually just one or can all 4 be effected together? I have a prado 120, low mileage with no compression on any of them? Cheers
Normally only one cylinder drops in compression, if all cylinders have lost compression do some other checks. Timing etc.
1kd vs 1gd whats your thoughts for someone looking to buy a prado
hey mate somehow I lost your other comments, was interested to see which channel was saying only Prado's crack pistons and not Hilux? thanks Pete.
5L was the best hilux engine notvthe kz and this new shit, same with the best were 1hdfte and old 12ht landcruiser engine, I personally own a 300,000 KS 2009 79series landcruiser I use 5w40 full synthetic castrol engine oil and rhyco oil filter, best thing to do with the v8 change the engine oil at 8000 max don't go long
Hey mate, how come you run 5w40 and not something like 15w40? I agree with you on changing oil etc earlier then 10,000km
So let me get this straight.....1KD stands for 1Killing Diesel. Would that be a fair enough description? Remind me never to buy another Toyota.
Ah yes, a bloke who neglects a vehicle and blames Toyota…. Nice
Has nothing to do with neglecting maintenance this is a design fault on Toyotas part which they swept under the rug.
Typical over rated Toyota rubbish
