I am a retired driver with 40 years under my belt. I drove for Jevic Transportation for 10 years and then New Century for 5 years. We always had around 10 to 15 stops on a trailer and maybe 5 or 6 pickups on the way to the nearest terminal. I can tell you LTL pays much better than full truckload. It's a whole Lotta work. We were based out of Delanco, N.J. and Willingboro, N.J. You had to be a damn good driver to be with Harry. I can honestly say Jevic was probably the best trucking job in the country.

To do six pick-ups, a highway driver will need at least 1.5 days of rest depending on the shipper. Companies normally pay an additional $50 for the pick-up. This means that the driver was meant to complete the journey in 1.5 days with all 6 pick-ups, but he is currently finishing in 3 days. For example, if I start my trip on Sunday to go to Georgia for Tuesday delivery and then pick up all LTL by Wednesday afternoon, I will return to the terminal by Thursday late or Friday morning and be done for the week.(The rest is subject to customs clearance). So, effectively, the firm made money but not the drivers. He did not deduct the money for local city costs plus hwy driver costs for each stop / cross dock charges (if necessary), and the hwy driver will miss his next trip because there will be no deliveries over the weekend.

LTL has always been the way to go. There are the odd and few times that you will get an extremely great pay on a full load. But LTL a driver and make more cash for both owner and driver.

We agree! Unfortunately, everyone in the comments seems to think that we're overworking the driver on LTL and "killing" their week

@@NorthAmerican-Trucking-News Well I am not quite sure how others may think that. Most operations pay their drivers a good premium for each P/U after the first one. Not sure what your company does but that has always been the norm for all the years my husband drove highway.

I really enjoy your videos and the knowledge I get from them I'm a driver but I like seeing what the company owners and dispatchers have to deal with I do believe their job is more difficult than the drivers I just put on some tunes and drive and if I don't have a load then I'll just play video games watch movies or explore wherever I am

Last company I was in, they had gotten used to make me do 1 or 2 pick ups and 4 drop offs. This one time they mad me do 2 pick ups and 5 drop offs!! Chicago to all drops around S. Carolina. It took me 3 days to unload everything finishing on a Friday and then had no load for the weekened. I quit that job because of that. This was reefer , so if it were dryvan might have been quicker. But if you take into account the amount of time I lose doing all those stops vs driving a full day, it makes absolutely no sense for me to be doing all those stops. The biggest issue for me in this type of job is the amount of time I lose in all these Shippers and receivers.

In terms of profitability, you have to calculate against an empty retour, if you don't have a load on your retour it also costs you a lot of money, so for a retour a LTL should always be profitabel unless the costs for additional time, additional fuel are covered (By the assumption your alternative is getting the truck back empty otherwise).

Time is money. If you take too long to do it and it cuts into next week's revenue you didn't gain anything. I did a load of nursery stock that had 13 drops but still paid way above the regular amount the the truck would make that week.. I guess keep in mind total revenue per week and if you can be set up for your next ttip Anything that causes a truck to lay over for the weekend or to miss a load trying to get empty is a killer

DAT have does features that tell you how much you making per miles and it is free, if you're making over 3 bucks a miles picking up does load may worth it but if it less than that every one would have to do their math's because you just involved 3 trucks with 3 drivers
