Never Give Up: My Astrophotography Story in Spain

  • I am on holiday in the Andalusia and Extremadura regions of Spain. While this is not a dedicated astrophotography trip, it isn't a total coincidence we are staying under dark skies in the middle of nowhere during new moon. Besides that, the sky in Spain is always clear, right? Photographing the Milky Way should be a walk in the park. My Nightscape Photography adventure turns out to be much more challenging than expected...
I try various techniques, including doing a 50mm mosaic of the milky way for the first time with single tracked exposures, a vertorama with non-tracked shots, a simple regular stacked photo and a full tracked & stacked set for optimal results. How do they compare?
I use an astro modified Canon 6D with the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Art lens. I also shoot with a Fuji X-T2 and Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2 lens. Tracked shots are done on a Skywatcher Star Adventurer star tracker.

Just last time I was out my tracker had a failure. And I didn't take a backup with me since I was on a family trip. So I took 210 untracked single exposures for the sky to get Barnard's Loop with a non modified camera. Can't wait to show you the result.

Nice new vlog, but I think the clouds love astrophotographer. That's why they are still on the sky at night 😅

Thanks so much again for taking the time to comment! Really appreciated! I though that first night would be a total bust with those bad seeeing conditions but was happy to see that at least something came out. I totally agree though that the monastery shot was much closer to what I envisioned when planning out trip to Spain ;-).

Great job, I love the last image :D also, nice that you tried mosaic with a tighter focal length - I love doing those, because the quality is increased significantly. Cant wait for pt2 :D too optimistic for tomorrow?

Thanks for watching again Matej! I loved doing the mosaic! Although I did have to help PTGui a bit with the stitch despite the large overlap. Part 2 is an eaaasy edit so far compared to this one. Will probably put that out somewhere next week. It will be a good one! 😀

Thanks man! This was a pretty tough one to put together tbh haha. Felt all over the place + most of the filming was done after a long and tiring travel day. Therefore extra nice to hear you enjoyed it! I also did, despite the challenges. Already missing those dark skies. How is your new video coming along? Should be a good one 😎.

@@StarScaperPhoto yeah keep it up! Love the regular videos. And yeah it’s an absolute belter, loads of Milky Way and awesome Northern Lights, gonna be near 30mins long as so much stuff! Can’t wait to get it out this weekend! Good to get the season back!! 😊

Thanks for taking us along with you on holiday, Jeroen! Great video - really felt your frustrations with the Spanish weather (I had many nights just like that - clear in the day, and then cloudy from dusk!). The monastery shot was superb. 👌
I am so glad I didn’t hear your scorpion story before I went clambering around rocks at night a few weeks ago! 😬
PS A smile always comes to my face now when I hear your signature music at the end. Love it. 👍

Thanks for watching and your comment Paul! Always great to read! Yeah, I heard other guests talking that the weather was perfect, because 'who needs the sun at night' which made me laugh. Didn't see any more scorpions apart from that one in our room fortunately, but it was quite impressive I have to admit. Great the end music puts a smile on your face. I notice some astro friends beginning to hum that song sometimes during shoots also haha.

Thanks Jeroen for sharing your „vacation“ highlights. I really like the dramaturgy of the video. Sometimes it’s not easy with the weather but that what makes astro photography so special. I also love the last shot of the “castle”. Can’t wait to see the remaining images in a future vlog. Keep on with your wonderful channel. All the best from Germany, Nico
