  • Control. Alt. Repeat: Black To The Future(Ism), And The Death Of Nu Hipsterism
Originality in the West is overrated and often involves the wiping away of genuine cultural memory. It also involves revisionist history pushing. Tight jeans, Facebook, Eminem...none of these new millennium pop cultural phenoms are conceptually new, in fact they are quite old. They have just been remixed to suit the needs of the humanoids of today.
Dalton Higgins is a York University alumnus and a music programmer, pop culture critic, author, broadcaster and journalist. He is also Canada's foremost expert on hip hop culture. His latest book is Hip Hop World, published by Groundwood Books/House of Anansi. As a print journalist, Dalton is a Canadian National Magazine Award recipient, and his articles have appeared in print and online mediums in the United States (Vibe, the Source, Urb, amazon.com) and Canada (Saturday Night, Now Magazine, Toronto Star, Quill & Quire and many others). Dalton has hosted his own TV show, and has appeared on numerous Canadian television programs: An expert on a number of topics related to popular culture, Dalton has waxed about Barack Obama on CTV's Canada AM, provided election coverage on CBC Radio One's Metro Morning, debated legal issues on CTV Newsnet's The Verdict, mused on fatherhood activism on TVO and ruminated on black culture on OMNI TV. His fourth book Fatherhood 4.0: iDad Applications Across Cultures spots trends across a newer generation of media-savvy, hip hoppy, multi-culti, Digital Dads influenced by everything from George Lopez and Bill Cosby to the Osbournes and Obama.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
