This looks fun. I’m still trying to get better mixing colors and just letting the water color do it’s thing. This method seems like a good way to do that and not be confined by the inital lines you draw.
I am so happy that your channel crossed my path today Sunday Sept 10th. I am a beginner in watercolour and pen. this is my 3rd video that I have watched today, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of watching you create your loose urban sketching. I felt yesss, I have those all of the pens you have mentioned , i have the watercolours and the brushes….My sketching is soo bad and really sketchy…you have inspired me that all i need to remember are the shapes, keep it loose and I love how the use of your pen brought the whole painting together …fabulous, grateful thanks from New Zealand, a great day getting spare moments of this warm spring day to view your videos…😊

Once again another great vid, I am learning so much from your excellent instructional techniques, today I really value the paint application, blending of colours, foreground/background methods, and the use of the negative spaces (I never quite know where to put them). Thanks again Toby.
Sagenhaft! 🤩 Diesmal in umgekehrter Reihenfolge.
Hi there 🥰🦘🦘🦘 Really enjoyed watching you create a scene, from a photo, using 4 stages. Great technique & instructions. Encouraging us to have faith is appreciated! Ours won't look like yours but I want to take my watercolour box, 🖌️🖌️& pens on my holiday to the coast & have a go! Thank 🙏 you!! 🌫️⛵
Yeah! Gr8. I'm a born & bred Aussie with 'roos sighted a short walk from my home. I love your artistic style. I shared with others too. Take care🙏🥰. . 🦘🌲🦘🌳🦘..🦘🌿
Wow! I love this brave technique. I'd love to know how you'd approach painting the row of brightly coloured houses of Tobermory, on the Scottish island of Mull. I'll be visiting there this summer and intend to have a go at a line and wash sketch of them when I'm there. Maybe I should try your technique of watercolour first? Would love to see your approach... 😊
Hi Sue - tutorial on Tobermory coming out today and a second one in a couple of days too. The first is a technique like this :) and then the second will be a super quick loose sketch in my 'normal' style. You can find it here if you want to check it out before it's published :) ruclips.net/video/viqXYS0jNkQ/видео.html
I love your work, Toby. I have a basic but important question about the amount of water you use: How do you know how much water to add/use -- how do you know when the consistency is right? I used to use too little color, and now i think I often use too much water (wet on wet). Any advice/general guidelines on how to successfully eyeball it?
It's a learning process mostly, if you have pools of water then you've used too much, if it dries quicker than 2-3 minutes then not enough. You want the issue too have a wet shiny look but no puddles
Hi Toby, your videos have given me the confidence to start sketching with results I am quite pleased with. I have a question about your choice of paint; your watercolour choice seems quite advanced and a little expensive, is it possible to get similar results with something simple such as my recently purchased Winsor & Newton Cotman Sketchers Pocket Box? Thanks again for the brilliant videos.
Yes Cotman colours are a very good starting point - I would suggest a slow progression towards professional colours as you gain confidence and start to know what you really like
Very nice. I keep watching your videos but have yet to try. I am in my later years and have grown up with the 'accuracy' of something and find if difficult to let go....
Check out my ink only version of this scene HERE ruclips.net/video/TNq9ibB7lYE/видео.html and let me know which you prefer 😊😅
Quite daunting this one Toby - definitely one to take in small steps and take time over it but the result certainly looks very worthwhile
Daunting yes, but it is easier than it looks - I'll do a few more in this style I think and then you'll trust me 😎
oh my, the beginning of your video also describes the story-writing process very well! great video, many thanks!
That's a great lesson! Thanks for taking about trusting the process
You bet!
OMG! Love the watercolor first! ❤I hope you do more of these!! 😊
Absolutely 😁

Have fun!

I just followed your tutorial, I had faith as you said and I am happy with my sketch. Thanks :))
Awesome!! Great to hear
Congratulations Claudia 😊
Very original style I like how it all came together as you do the steps. Thanks very nice.
No worries!
This is so very cool. Love how watercolor first seems to take away a lot of the pressure of sketching.
It does!
Many thanks! Practicing before my trip to Scotland so this is perfect. Absolutely love the multi-media approach.
Nice. I tried loose sketching in Buchanan st pedestrian street Glasgow. Look in forward to dropping B in some colour later today based on my photo.
Enjoy!!!!
I painted along w/you - fun - I need a lot more practice - however I do like the final result! Thank you so much!
Brilliant to hear 😄
Just beautiful! I love your technique!
Thank you so much!

Thank you - I love this style! If your palette could only have two blues and one was ultramarine, would you choose phthalo, cobalt, or another?
Hi Douglas!! Thanks for the Kofi!! Definitely cobalt hands down :)

You are an amazing Artist!
I love the way you describe and explain the process!
I learn so much from you!
I'm just glad to help :)

Anxious to try this but a bit afraid… Love this tutorial!😊

Believe and Trust...good advice 👌👍

So interesting and such a well explained process. Thank you 😊
You are so welcome!

Super !! Merci
My pleasure 😊
I'm a new subbie and I just love your work. You make it look so simple, so thank you !
Awesome and 🤗
I must attempt this🤗
Go for it!!
Gorgeous! Love your work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice! Did you use hot press paper?
It's cold, but very lightly textured.
Good stuff 😎
Thanks! 😁
Übrigens, bevorzuge ich die colorierte Variante.
Ich finde Aquarelle mit Fineliner oder Federhalter und Coloration einfach mega! 🤩
Awesome,thanks!!
Well, I tried this. Mine doesn’t look like yours, or even how it’s meant to look. Urgh. Practice.
Don't worry Debby, practice will always help.
If it feels a bit overwhelming try a really simple pencil sketch to aid you at the beginning 🙏👍🎨
That's the hardest thing for me: leaving White gaps on the paper. 😂 My paintings are always looking dull
Yes surprisingly challenging to do nothing!
Those hands are really irritating 😢
Hehe sorry
Very nice. I keep watching your videos but have yet to try. I am in my later years and have grown up with the 'accuracy' of something and find if difficult to let go....
You can do it! (If you want) thank you so much for watching either way!
