After all, watching Mac and Charlie beat up children, or the gang exploiting PPE loans, or even seeing them try to figure out the algorithm are some pretty amazing moments in the show.

Those seasons are amazing and amongst the best seasons of a comedy TV show ever. From S12E8 and on, there are only a few episodes that make it into the great category, with most falling in the meh category.

My favorite thing about Always Sunny is the way it cleverly avoided character flanderization by, in a way, embracing it. The gang undeniably gets crazier throughout the series and their antics bigger as well, but it doesn't feel like they're leaning into jokes that they know work, but rather that they're driving each other crazy. When you rewatch Season 1 and they feel *almost* normal by comparison, it doesn't feel like the show lost sight of subtlety, but that this is the beginning of a very long downwards spiral for the gang.

  • @AlmightyArceus

I think the best "social commentary episodes" are the ones that use the contentious subject as a jumping off point while letting the funny gang interactions take center stage. They rarely ever rely too heavily on "hey look at us, we're making fun of both sides, isn't that funny!?" like South Park seems to do sometimes.

    • @BrickKildaguy
      @BrickKildaguy  Год назад +24

Right, but they also tend to mention the topic they're discussing, making the situation feel more real. "A Woman's Right to Chop" was just a metaphor.

    Fun facts:
Glenn, Charlie and Rob have a podcast where they discuss each episode and making it and they said before they originally wanted the name of the show to be "Jerks"
They also said that we have Danny DeVito's kids to thank for him playing Frank. He had never heard of the show (which was in its infancy at the time) when he was offered the role but his kids loved it and begged him to take the project
A couple episodes of season 1 were shot with a different actress playing Dee, who was ironically enough Robs real life girlfriend at the time. She was replaced with Kaitlyn who would later marry Rob.

I could almost list the seasons in reverse chronological order to make my worst to best list. What made the early seasons so great was that the characters were still somewhat grounded despite being horrible people. As the show has progressed, they've slowly become more and more cartoonish caracitures of themselves. Add to that, even the backdrop of the fictional world they inhabit has devolved to be almost as cartoonish and ungrounded as the main characters. The jokes dont land as well when everyone is in on it.

I actually would throw season 15 a lot higher. I felt like it was a return to form and easily the best season, overall, since season 9. The gang buys a roller rink is classic, and I love the whole Irish trip, it felt refreshing and yet familiar. But my favorite episode from season 15 is the gang replaces dee with a monkey. There are at least five moments in that episode that made me laugh out loud uncontrollably, the standouts being “go where? In my opinion seasons 14 and 15 have been the worst of the show. Too many things involving American politics and as a Canadian I’m kind of tired of hearing that stuff constantly. But the good episodes were still good. Dee day was an instant classic and the Ireland stuff from season 15 was peak sunny. But the other stuff can just feel ham fisted and too much “of the times” the older episodes talking about societal issues have this timeless quality to them but these newer ones feel too much rooted in the now to be relatable in 5 or so years. However I have hope that season 16 will go back to more of the basics with their podcast having them recall what made seasons 3-12 so great.

season 7 is my favorite but i think everything 4-9 is gold. 10-12 has some of my favorite episodes but there was a noticeable drop in consistency. season 13 was by far my least favorite. i know it's unpopular opinion but i thought the character of mac works much better when he is closeted and in denial, it works better as satire that way. the finale was hokey and as a gay guy who grew up hating will and grace i don't really like the full on gay borderline stereotypical version of mac we have today. i also feel they retconned the character because in the first few seasons he was definitely more bi, going out of his way to get girls when he didn't have to.
anyway season 14 and 15 it picked back up a bit. not a fan of the storyline (season 15 spoiler!) where frank is portrayed as the conspiracy theory nutjob for not getting the vax and that kills charlies dad. even though everyone now knows it never prevented transmission. it hurt to watch blatant corporate pharma propaganda inserted into one of my favorite shows. getting off my soapbox and aside from that the actual writing for 15 was a step up and promising for whats to come.

"I won't change my opinion, because i dont HAVE to. Because im an AMERICAN.
And I won't change my opinion, REGARDLESS of the facts and evidence set out before me. I'm dug in, and I'll never change"
This quote from Mac perfectly encapsulates what you're saying, IMO. Just this absolutely preposterous-sounding person who says all the wrong things at the worst times. Satire at it's finest.
And that monologue stuck with me, too. I find myself quoting it alarmingly often, usually in response to seeing people exhibit similar levels of pride in their own stubborn ignorance but unfortunately with zero irony.

@@Loctorak That's the thing with satire is it takes nuanced insight whether metaphorical and/or allegorical to really get it. I notice a lot of confusion comes from comparing it to parody which blends in with satire a little bit but whereas parody is absurdist comedy, satire is absurdist anything that mimics and mocks correctly and Mac's quote above encapsulates so many Americans including myself in my past which is another reason why you, I, and many others do get it.

I think you had it right originally; season 5 is peak Sunny. I’ve often compared it to one of the iconic rock albums of the 60s or 70s, where every track is a banger. Just comedic gold, through and through

Flipadelphia might be the best episode of the entire series.

This is a valid ranking, but imo season 2 is way too far down. I think the entire season is hilarious tbh with no skips

It’s unfortunate considering Dee Day is the best episode in season 14, but I don’t think that would change your opinion on the season as a whole

Agreed with most of it, but the whole Ireland-saga for me has been the best stuff they've done in years! It's fresh and everybody gets their moment to shine; Charlie finding his dad, Mac becoming a priest, Dennis going full horror villain, Frank serving poop soup, Dee failing miserably and being taken advantage of at every turn.
    I love it 🥲♥️

It absolutely is the greatest comedy series of all time. And, anyone who knows the cruel nature of human behavior would agree🤣
