    My favorite fan theory about the show is that the reason every episode starts with a time stamp is because all the episodes are being recounted in court and the gang are all testifying against each other.

    I think the charm behind dee is that in most sitcoms, the only woman is always some sort of love interest and is normally sexualized. Here, she is literally seen as the opposite and no one expects the latter.

      @aanyasrivastava9652 Год назад +155

      Also, usually, the Girl of the group ends up with one of the guy MCs or at least has some sexual tension with them, but in this show, the only 2 eligible "bachelors" in this show don't even consider her as an option. She is not even a woman to them. Mac is deep in denial about his sexuality, Charlie and Dee actually get along well but even in the episode where she proposes that they should get married and charlie thinks they are gonna have sex for real, you cannot feel any tension between them at all.

      Nah that’s not it. It’s that the woman is supposed to be the voice of reason in most stories. If you got rowdy hot headed guys it’s the woman who’s smart and collected. Dee however is a complete idiot. They “try” to juxtapose her as the smart straight man but the joke is she acts like the reasonable one but is usually no better.

    The narrator is wrong about how Danny Devito became a cast member. Rob McElhenney did not "come knocking," in search of Devito. McElhenney has told this story in many interviews, such as the Late Show with Steven Colbert. According to McElhenney, an executive called him after season one and pitched the idea of having Devito come on to help boost ratings. Because McElhenney didn't want to mess up the chemistry of the cast, he flat out told the executive "no." Then the executive told McElhenney that if they weren't going to take on Devito, then the show was going to be canceled.

    What definitely makes the show work for me besides the natural brilliant comedic talent of everyone involved, is that it is a master class in how to portray bad people in a funny way that makes you not get overwhelmed or annoyed.
    So many comedies try to have asshole or selfish characters and I feel like they often fail imo. While I like those shows for other reasons those aspects irk me, unlike in IASIP.
    Either the characters happen to be shitty but the show doesn't acknowledge it or thinks they're the heroes (How I Met Your Mother), tries to justify it (Rick & Morty), or it revels in their shittiness to a point of genuine discomfort (The League).
    IASIP is about the worst people you could ever meet, but they're basically real life cartoon characters in human form, one step away from Looney Tunes. They're like if the ID or someone's lizard brain was personified.
    Nothing really has long term damage (with a few exceptions), they're rarely so realistically awful that you can't enjoy them (it's too comical to take seriously), and the show rarely justifies their actions either which makes you laugh when they usually lose at the end.

    • @rdf274
      @rdf274 Год назад +5

      That's a nice take. It takes uncompromised writing, I guess. If you're writing an assole character, a bad writer might feel the need to make him cartoonishly disgusting, afraid of humanizing him because of a fear that his writing might be looked upon as a reflection of the writers own personality.

    • @arthurdurham
      @arthurdurham Год назад +7

      @@rdf274 Yup. I feel like the other way as well, they'll often try to humanize them but it feels like a weird contrast when they're occasionally good so that somehow justifies their actions.
      IASIP just makes it so over the top and that they're all assholes that even the random humanizing moments work for me bc they're unexpected. Or you can go the other way and do a Bojack Horseman, which the character being a bad person is the point and it delves deep into that concept and the consequences of it.
      Neither of these shows feels like they're trying to just say being an asshole is funny, they're acutely aware the characters are bad and they run with it but in different directions.

    One of my favorite aspects: IRL the gang would've long ago been put in jail or revenge-murdered, while Cricket's story would be the saddest shit ever. Somehow, they've gotten us attached to horrible people who actively try not to be any better, and had us laugh at a decent guy in a bleak downward spiral. That's just excellent writing, casting and performance.
    "I can fake it. On the streets, you learn how to fake it. The guys who don't fake it, they're the ones that get it the worst." While the gang never learn a lesson, Cricket has learned to get by in increasingly disturbing situations. So, negative growth.

    Such an amazing video! Great editing, amazing comedic timing, and when you started your closing remarks I was thinking "no way this was 30 minutes!". Subbed!

    The editing of this was superb. I laughed like I was seeing the jokes for the first time. Especially the Bastette “meow” 😂

    I was getting so nervous waiting for Cricket to show up. Absolutely the best supporting character 😂

    I disagree with why people find the gang so fascinating. It isn't because you could never imagine yourself doing something like that and not relating to it, its because you CAN relate to it but it's also just to crazy and wrong to actually imagine yourself doing. So when you see it you go "huh, so this is what'd be like if I was completely delusional, or idiotic"

    I totally agree with you that this show will get more popular as time goes on. In 10 years when people have had time to digest it and it lives on in streaming

    I wouldnt say that they dropped the Sweet Dee moniker after season 2. They referred to her as Sweet Dee right before they attempted to go to the Grand Canyon, but never made it out of Philadelphia

    They're still absolutely smashing it; the most recent season even had Sunny:The Movie in the shape of those last 4 eps set in Ireland. Just a joy.

    I love that similar to sitcom and cartoon characters Charlie continues to wear the same few pieces of clothing except his clothing noticeably deteriorates over the years

      It’s also stated in the canon of the show he is great at sewing because he mends all his clothes when they fall apart. If you wanted to get analytical it’s probably from growing up poor
