What is so genius about Charlie being the straight man, outside of the initial subversion that you're misled to believe he's the most screwed up of them all, is although he's a selfish and egotistical gremlin just like the rest of them, the childlike innocence and vulnerability to him due to his upbringing makes it easier to get behind him or empathize with his goals than you would the others. And with him being the quintessential runt of the litter in the group with the lowest class status job literally being called "Charlie work" it means he doesn't ever feel the same unwarranted prestige the rest of them have that gives them their ridiculous narcissism, and so it creates a warped result where he inadvertently winds up being the most self-aware of them all, thus the one who finds it easiest to recognise the delusion and insanity the other four have, because that's how he's perceived and looked down on by them to begin with.

Charlie plays the straight man: "OK, I'm going to throw this grenade in the car, the car will explode and our problems will be solved! In the meantime I need you to do a popper."
I do love how everyone shifts when Charlie plays straight man- you ever notice that? The other characters are impacted dramatically for that to be the case. It kinda blows a whole on the whole “Dennis is a genius narrative”. Eg: Frank is magically now a dip shit who doesn’t understand 4 way intersections despite manipulating everyone with ease. Dennis can’t be apart from his Roomate in his mid 30s and can’t eat apple skins bc mac said so. Probably the most straight man Charlie moment ever IMO absent from this awesome list: - MAC: feel like you’re making fun of me…” - Charlie: ……. “Oh?” 😂
I think one of the best things about this show is that at one point they're ALL the straight man depending on the situation, there's various bits where each character gets a turn at delivering the most reasonable "what the fuck are you talking about you're an idiot" response to whatever the other characters are doing, even though they're all just about as bad as each other
Charlie as a straight man is really interesting because he can play the straight man convincingly whilst maintaining his insane personality. Watching the entirety of the nightman cometh or Charlie Work we see a character so in tune with his own insanity that he understands his friends’ brands of insanity perfectly and in doing so can judge the gang remarkably well.
Frank's reaction to Pondy after he says he just lies about having a vasectomy so he doesn't have to use a condom is absolutely hilarious. The entire scene Frank is pretty aloof but you can see his interest building the more underhanded Pondy gets. Danny DeVito is a legend. The scene starts 17:07.
I think what I like the most about Charlie as a character is that he feels almost genuinely tragic, even within the comical confines of the show, without ever actually being tragic. He's a complete nutcase with no knowledge of boundaries or basic decency, almost like a little kid, and he KNOWS that he's kind of the kid/runt of the gang, and to a degree, he almost relishes in it. He unapologetically likes what he likes and wants to do what he wants to do, and even if he's not good at it or it's not good for him, there's a genuine enjoyment in what he does and who he is. Charlie ALMOST likes himself for completely normal and healthy reasons. The problem is that Charlie's in a group of friends that don't actually want him to be like that, or at least don't really get WHY he's like that. The rest of the gang looks down on him for being as idiotic, unaware, and generally immature as he is, and HE KNOWS that they're right because he himself sees some of that in who he is. Even if it's for the wrong reasons (basically being bullied into believing it), he's perfectly aware that he's weird in a bad way, that he's different, and that - perhaps because of the gang - something is wrong with him, but he never improves as a person because he's hearing it and getting it the wrong way. The gang doesn't find his bad quirks to be how unhinged or violent or stalker-y or unhealthy he is most of the time, they just think what he likes and does is weird. It's a vicious cycle Charlie's trapped in - he knows that, in some respect, he's not the best person, he finds himself weird and has that lucidity about himself, it's just that he thinks it's for the wrong reason. He can play the straight man so well because he's the only member of the gang who knows the kind of person he wants to be at heart, but he cannot escape the gang because he doesn't see the kind of person he ACTUALLY IS. Even if impressionable and immature enough for it not to seem like it sometimes, he's an insane, idiotic, creepy, and violent moron whose best aspects are that he doesn't REALIZE how horrible of a person he is... and if he weren't so mentally handicapped and surrounded by people who insulted and belittled him constantly for reasons ultimately unrelated to what he'd need to change or improve about himself, he MIGHT be able, in another universe, MAYBE, to see what's wrong with himself and grow as a person, but that time passed him long ago as is.
The thing is, an aspect of his immaturity comes from him being coddled by his mom, and he may have repressed memories concerning his Uncle Jack, on top of his constant drug abuse, which started when he huffed glue he got from "Santa". I think besides Mac, Charlie is the closest member of the Gang to be a better person, as he mellowed out a bit when he hung out with Dee in the diner, and that was just one day. The Gang is a perfect storm of toxic co-dependency mixed with some distorted sense of camaraderie and they all bring out the worst traits in each other, even if Charlie, Mac and Frank all genuinely like each other.
@@AluminumFusion22a lot of the toxicity in The Gang definitely is due to Dennis’ influence. His psychopathy and his obsession with control mean he has to be the one controlling what they do, who they are to him and each other, and how they act in situations. Frank may be the most depraved of The Gang (I’m gonna get weird with it, I just want to be pure, im a man cheetah, throw the kids into the soup, etc.), but we know that even he has lines he won’t cross (do not diddle kids). If it wasn’t for it being illegal, I have no doubt Dennis wouldn’t be above having sex with a minor. He views the whole world as his sandbox, and the people within them as drones he can manipulate. He sees women as a thing to achieve sex with, not a person. Frank at least was willing to live with Charlie and treat him as a friend, and save a 12-year old from a wet T-shirt contest. Frank is the only one who is also immune to Dennis’s manipulation, as he only values Charlie and doesn’t care about anyone else’s opinion. Mac had the worst upbringing with parents who hated him and a Dad who was barely around, and developed a very toxic form of masculinity to cope with it (he absolutely loathes Dee) and repress his sexuality, which Dennis uses to assert control over what he eats and how he looks. He’s the one with the least amount of respect within The Gang due to his stupidity and his ignorance, and relies on Dennis, the head of the group, to boost what little ego he has. Charlie is the weirdest one, but he’s also the one that, despite his crazy flaws, his insane personality and his creepy interests (Charlie work, rat bashing, huffing paint and glue, night crawlers, sewer expeditions, stalking The Waitress), is also shown to be the most likely to be a better person outside of The Gang’s influence. His mother coddled him as a child and his uncle molested him, and Dennis uses that insecurity to degrade him and undervalue him, and make him the runt of the group. Charlie is the only one who disliked Schmitty to begin with, because he genuinely finds him annoying. Dennis only got tired of Schmitty after he suggested the boys be able to make their own choices without Dennis deciding for them. Dee is a bird.
Whenever Charlie is normal he’s still like hey I gotta leave bash some rats or I just wrote a musical to propose to a woman. He’s the straight man to help him become even more insane
I love the earlier seasons when Charlie wasn't always the "extreme" version of himself (and the rest of the gang too). I feel like there was more interchanging of roles back then, rather than Dennis being "the sociopath", Charlie being "the idiot" etc..
That whole scene is amazing bcuz it perfectly shows how macs stupidity is different from charlies and thats why they bounce off each other so well. The wedding dress scenes do that too
The scene at 4:50 feels like Glenn and Charlie decided last minute to switch roles. All charlies lines sound like something Dennis would say. "-Youre supposed to serve drinks" "aaaaa- *points at black hair* thats terrible"
2:44 “And what I can do is thrust this way and you can struggle.” 🤦♂️ Jesus Christ…. You know whenever they start playing music, someone has said something golden.
I love that the whole gang is so insane that charlie can be the straight man while actively kidnapping someone he thinks is a leprechaun and bringing a gun to an elementary school
"OK. I'm going to throw this grenade into the car. the car will explode and our problems will be solved. in the meantime, i need you to do a popper." Charlie, somehow the more rational person in this scene.
I’m not sure that 8:29 counts as Charlie being a straight man as he is going along with Mac’s absurd belief that the man is a leprechaun and trying to get his supposed pot of gold…unless you mean Charlie being a straight man in the heterosexual sense and letting Mac go the gay bar.
No. It’s because Charlie understands exactly why Mac wants to go to the gay bar and knows about it when Charlie doesn’t. He’s at that point just appeasing Mac.
I ❤ reasonable Charlie. My favorite is him dealing with concussed Mac because he's forced to be the sane one, and it's one of the first times he's in that position on the show...

"I'm not tellin' him shit, dude! I'm gonna hang up the phone on you!" great goddamn delivery
“Hey babe In A Turtle’s Dream just dropped a new sunny compilation!”
I feel like all the characters have their moments to be the voice of reason. Except Frak...OH shit I meant Frank.
Frank had a decent amount of that in his earlier episodes. Mostly before he really fell in with our boy Charlie.
He’s usually the voice of reason when money is concerned
12:12 “I don’t give a shit. Why are you here?” is an amazing delivery that. Make me laugh every time
Should have included Charlie getting a headache over Waitress yammering on about nail salon names. In Flowers for Charlie.
I need to figure out how to squeeze in, "i was left out of the finale" into my conversations
Jesus goddamn Christ, Mother.
charlie's mom retelling her whole night and then just saying "and then he killed somebody" without any context was hilarious
@9:27 Mac is explaining a story from Palahniuk's "Haunted"
"I can't lie to my Charlie!!!"
Proceeds to tell him about her 3 way with Luther and Eduardo
🤣🤣
17:38 I'm surprised this reaction from Charlie hasn't been meme'd.
that scene at the end about charlie’s mom always gets me
she could have just said they spit-roasted her but granny doesn't know the terms, bless her.
"And then Eduardo went out... and then he killed somebody. And then... well that's all I know." Makes me laugh every time I hear it.
The Gang is a perfect storm of toxic co-dependency mixed with some distorted sense of camaraderie and they all bring out the worst traits in each other, even if Charlie, Mac and Frank all genuinely like each other.
sooooo….denim chicken???
7:42 Charlie’s delivery is amazing
Fav Mac scenes of all time is every moment with the wedding dress. Haha
"And then, i'll hop up sorta like a cat, like so! Meow."
Whenever Charlie is normal he’s still like hey I gotta leave bash some rats or I just wrote a musical to propose to a woman. He’s the straight man to help him become even more insane
This video makes it seem like Charlie is just a normal dude in a group full of insane people 😭
Another reason why Mac is his best friend is that he's known him longer. So there's more time to develop the bond, plus Dennis looks down on him
The slow camera pan out to Mac in the wedding dresses is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen 😂😂😂 3:42
Mac's insistance on getting the dress is the best part of that scene in the shop
That's one of my favorite parts
Allllll your instincts and training....the level of mockery is so perfect
Straight Man, aaaaah
Fighter of the Gay Man, aaaaah
Champion of the right, aaaaah
You’re a master of correction and loving for everyone
The 4 way intersection is one of my favorite bits
I fuckim love charlie, a true wildcard
charlie has always been my favorite. the character is genius. the pod cast is fantastic for work too
I miss Artemis
“I’ll hop up to him like a cat. Like so. Meow.”
I haven’t thoroughly watched this show since 2016 but my god it’s incredible, lmaoXD
I love the earlier seasons when Charlie wasn't always the "extreme" version of himself (and the rest of the gang too). I feel like there was more interchanging of roles back then, rather than Dennis being "the sociopath", Charlie being "the idiot" etc..
“So what should I do now?”
“I don’t give a sh*t. Why are you here?”
Absolutely underrated line.
4:40 He looks more like a vampire than he does Superman if you ask me.
Dude looks like an NPC from Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines
I can't believe I've been watching this for nearly 20 years. I don't have time for these shenanigans.
“Like a cat: Like so. *meow* .”
2:44 “And what I can do is thrust this way and you can struggle.” 🤦♂️ Jesus Christ….
You know whenever they start playing music, someone has said something golden.
Thanks for coming back and dropping this banger buddy very thundergun of you
0:49 - This line cracks me up, so much. 😂
I love that the whole gang is so insane that charlie can be the straight man while actively kidnapping someone he thinks is a leprechaun and bringing a gun to an elementary school
"OK. I'm going to throw this grenade into the car. the car will explode and our problems will be solved. in the meantime, i need you to do a popper."
Charlie, somehow the more rational person in this scene.
"I was left out of the finale." is my favorite!
Kind of, but mainly I think it's about how Charlie clearly knew the real reason Mac was going to the gay bar alone and didn't buy his explanation
And Charlie was “right” about the guy _actually_ being a leprechaun.
Yeah hes being the straight man i that ge sees thru macs bullshit lmao
I ❤ reasonable Charlie. My favorite is him dealing with concussed Mac because he's forced to be the sane one, and it's one of the first times he's in that position on the show...
this is such a niche joy from the show 😭😭i can’t believe you made a compilation
Charlie has moments where he is arguably the most intelligent member of the gang, and that is terrifying! 😂
By far your biggest brain idea for a compilation
Dennis is the self-proclaimed Leonardo, Mac i think is the Donatello, Sweet Dee is the Raphael, and Charlie is the absolute Michaelangelo
Is Frank Master Splinter?
Cricket is Casey, and Artemis is April
Ryan and Liam are Shredder and their entire incestuous extended family is the footclan
@@rotcehlobo8311 I think that is certain for this show 🤭
3:18 is honestly one of my favorite reaction shots of all time. "... We're not buying the wedding dress."
The four way intersection bit is one of the funniest things ever written
"No shit. Oh. "
5:04 dennis’ pained face from charlie’s reaction is so good
I've been waiting for this video. Some of my favorite moments in comedy shows are when the character that's usually the funny man plays the straight man.
9:47 is a reference to a short story in Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk called 'Guts', I believe... If not, it still is a great short horror story.
