Guy is 40 years as a musician/in the industry and has the energy and enthusiasm of a 20 something. Amazingly positive and forward leaning and truly talented.
A natural teacher. Speaking with enthusiasm and in the simplest terms without "talking down" is not something everyone does well. Especially if they've explained a subject countless times before.
Haha! I remember his "Mad Scientist" column, someone wrote in " I get an annoying "POP" when I plug my bass in, what do I do?" Billy wrote back "I used to have an annoying POP too, but mom divorced him", LOL sorry! :)
Everyone saying he's a genius , extremely talented , etc. You have it all wrong, he is a musician . He has spent more time with his gear and playing live in bands than most of you do working . That is where the knowledge and skills come from . He didn't just wake up one day and know what he does . There are no shortcuts , you got to put in the time !
I played with guitar overdrive mixed with clean sounds for a while but it was still a bit mushy. Thanks to him I cut all bass and treble, pushed the mids at max on the guitar pedal leaving the full bass tone with it. Much more natural, full sounding bass tone now
Billy 1st I want to tell you what an inspiration u were to me on the local music scene the poor house north in syracuse TALAS!! you willprobly never see this but thank you I went on the local scene and had the time of my life.... so thank-you ur bass friend Jack .. keep rockn....
i missed your visits to indonesia in early 2000s. i have always been fascinated by your style. it is bass, but yet you have more than just most bassis do, and the best part is, your style fit to the music. that's genius. you make bass unlike bass but it's still serve it's function in a all piece. you really showed how something adds to something bigger and become fit as a whole. rock style music. but mr big make me understand why it sounds like that. you guys rock
I don't particularly like or want to emulate Billy's playing, but I admire him as an innovator and for ploughing his own furrow. Plus he seems like a good guy.
Billy's the best. I saw him in 1986 with David Lee Roth and both him, Steve Vai and Gregg Bisonette were totally amazing. The best concert I've ever seen in my life.
Jaco Pastorious did a clinic at MI many years ago and was asked, "have you heard of Billy Sheehan"? Jaco's answers, "yeah he's pretty good". Billy is amazing. Jaco was cocky yet humble.
+Garegh62 Different strokes for different folks. If you like growly distorted bass and don't split your signal, all the low end goes away when you add distortion. Victor Wooten just has a different tone, so his needs are different than Bill's needs. It's like saying Picasso was better painter than Michaelangelo because of a certain red paint he used. The point is they are both good, but different artists with different needs as far as the tools to produce their very different art.
He has to be a border line genius, he's 16 thoughts ahead of his actions, he keeps it straight and to the point. I wonder how many great Bass players he can out play without a conscience effort. He's just one of those gifted individuals I appreciate.
Man you have to love that set up I remember seeing you back in the Talas days With all your rack gear turned away from the crowds so nobody knew what you had in there.
Billy definitely knows his way around the bass guitar and his equipment. I’ve never been a huge fan of his tone, however a toned down on the highs a little might be something I’m interested in. I would love to tryout his newest version of his signature ebs pedal but I can’t afford a $300 bass pedal. Just a little pricey I think.
The 4X10 is always better for bass as there is more speaker area with 4 speakers rather than a single 15", and the smaller speakers move so much quicker.
What kind of strap is he using? I know he use to make his own from some materials by a company called Buffalo Belt And Weaving? I think is the name. Mainly, because he said leather would stretch after time.
I like the two output thing but I would put it towards a different use. Like having an SVT Rig for that classic tone and the other for my slappy Markbass rig. I was amazed to see your graphic EQ on the Hartke was upside down. You have the 500hz to 4K Cranked up big time Mr. Big. Are those black fret inlays scalped?
I really enjoy Billy and his playing... but man after hearing this same story for about the 8,000th time it really makes ya wish he could talk as well as he plays. He's just got so much energy his mouth can't keep up with the rest of him I think.
I wish there were an affordable version of that bass... Looks great (my favorite color for a bass), I bet it plays great and it's a really interesting pickup layout. Maybe an affordable version without the stereo option and different pickups like Duncan Designed ones. If Yamaha had an equivalent to Squier, I'm sure they could make it happen.
They did make cheap versions of the Attitude basses with just one humbucker in ge middle called the Attitude Deluxe, as well as a mid-priced Sheehan model called the Attitude Special. You see them pop up used on eBay and reverb a lot, probably $250-$300 for the cheaper ones and $500-$700 for the ones with the Sheehan subwoofer setup.
Does not have more logic to use the crossover before the overdrive pedal? Low signals to the clean loop and high ones to the input of the pedal, instead of being after the compressor?
So.... I'm just beside myself right now. You're doing all that you do on bass, which is complicated enough, at least to me, but then you decide to throw your right foot into the mix, and now you're playing bass and piano at the same time....all while providing back up vocals. 😳......🤯
Guy is 40 years as a musician/in the industry and has the energy and enthusiasm of a 20 something. Amazingly positive and forward leaning and truly talented.
I guess he is a naturally upbeat person and loves his music, very talented i met him once years ago with Mr Big in 1991
A natural teacher. Speaking with enthusiasm and in the simplest terms without "talking down" is not something everyone does well. Especially if they've explained a subject countless times before.
Had the pleasure of meeting Billy at G3 '03. Very kind and generous to myself, wife, and then 6-year old son. Truly an inspirational musician.
Thanks for just being you. Good human. One of my favourites 👍
The Mad Scientist Bassist. Billy is amazing.
+SixSentSoldiers I was going to post the same comment. :D
also a scientologist
Haha! I remember his "Mad Scientist" column, someone wrote in " I get an annoying "POP" when I plug my bass in, what do I do?" Billy wrote back "I used to have an annoying POP too, but mom divorced him", LOL sorry! :)

Perhaps the most informative bass rig rundown I've ever seen! Thanks my bass brother. You have a new fan.
I'm not a bass player first of all but I'm a gear geek... I could listen to Billy talk about bass all day long... the man knows his rig in and out
Number One in business! Thank You Mr Billy!!!!
I played with guitar overdrive mixed with clean sounds for a while but it was still a bit mushy. Thanks to him I cut all bass and treble, pushed the mids at max on the guitar pedal leaving the full bass tone with it. Much more natural, full sounding bass tone now
Super cool, genuine guy. Met him with a buddy for mine that knows him, really honest and happy to chill with everyone.
Billy 1st I want to tell you what an inspiration u were to me on the local music scene the poor house north in syracuse TALAS!! you willprobly never see this but thank you I went on the local scene and had the time of my life.... so thank-you ur bass friend Jack .. keep rockn....
Genius - Innovator - Class act!
I'd like to know how many pots of coffee a day this guy drinks. Every video I've seen of him he's enthusiastic and alert as hell.
Always an engaging speaker, and player! Great clip.
Brilliant player with incredible chops. Fast and has a great sense of humor.
i missed your visits to indonesia in early 2000s.

you guys rock
Thanks as always Billy!!!!
brilliant bass rig and bass god Billy you are too much, man!!!
"Misty" at 6:24. How cool and out of left-field is that!😄
Love The Johnny Mathis Jam he does really quickly Billy Sheehan is terrific.
Seems like such a cool guy too!
Nice video. I always love Billy's sound.
I don't particularly like or want to emulate Billy's playing, but I admire him as an innovator and for ploughing his own furrow. Plus he seems like a good guy.
Man, what a nice guy! Thanks!
The man is an inspiration! Keep bassing!
Billy is a smart dude. Really thinks his instrument through in great detail.
I like how he can't really stand still. super high energy guy. super badass and a cool guy...
Very informative and as always you are extremely professional with a great attitude.
i fucking love this guy...and yet know none of his songs...must listen to Billy!!
Yes, Billy just played Satin Doll.😂
Amazing! I love Billy....we should all be more like Billy.
Great man! Great bassman and very great teacher! Thanks Sir :-)
A rock legend and a genuinely nice guy.
What a cool guy.
I seen play only once at NAMM and his stage presence and sound is huge!
Billy's the best. I saw him in 1986 with David Lee Roth and both him, Steve Vai and Gregg Bisonette were totally amazing. The best concert I've ever seen in my life.
flashy5150 You were so blessed to be able to see that concert. The best trio ever assembled imo
Great work Billy. Come to Australia sometime please :)
Ha, I wasn't expecting to hear Misty! Billy you da man!
Don't like his music or his bass style. But love hear him talking about music and gear. Such a nice guy!
Bootjuh77 I feel u,he can play, but over plays(that's why bands have guitars)and his tone is shit(my opinion)this is not bashing him, just his tone
Makes you want to love mastering your bass for a renaissance...
Nicest guy. Billy Sheehan is the Billy Sheehan of bass players.
Jaco Pastorious did a clinic at MI many years ago and was asked, "have you heard of Billy Sheehan"? Jaco's answers, "yeah he's pretty good". Billy is amazing. Jaco was cocky yet humble.

Wealth of talent and information and willig to share it.
He´s such a nice and cool guy...
i'd love to get out to this camp!
Man you have to love that set up I remember seeing you back in the Talas days With all your rack gear turned away from the crowds so nobody knew what you had in there.
And they say rock bands aren't smart! This dude is next level!
Smart set up.
Love those round wound Rotosound strings. Callous much?
What a cool guy.

Damn, Billy has the mids cranked on that first amp.
Imagine having all this thrown at you on your first bass lesson!
Heh, yeah, gear options usually come waaay later :)
The number 1! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Master!
The 4X10 is always better for bass as there is more speaker area with 4 speakers rather than a single 15", and the smaller speakers move so much quicker.
I say a 1x15 with no tweeter is more transparent and just a better tonal match to electric bass. Just angle the cab up at you a bit.
What kind of strap is he using? I know he use to make his own from some materials by a company called Buffalo Belt And Weaving? I think is the name. Mainly, because he said leather would stretch after time.
Billy is the classiest cat!
Finish watching this video then go straight over to watch Billy in the studio on the produce like a pro RUclips channel. You won't regret it.
The top five frets are scalloped under the G and D strings only.
Love ya Billy !!!!
What kind of mixer that they use for in-ear monitors is that? Help please.
What a top guy/gent
This guy is as KISS would say hotter than Hell.
Steveie Ver Buzzed
A true Master!
So does anyone know what other pedals he uses that are on top of his rig but didn't go over in this video? Just curious
Yo as a mixing engineer & producer, this is VERY informative... 💪
Glad you think so!
@@MusicMastersCamps how could it not be :D
You should look into the Tech21 Dug amp and maybe talk to Tech21 about doing your own signature amp.
“It’s never gone down on me, it’s fantastic” sounds like a contradiction!!
Newbie would like to know if anyone can identify both the amps model numbers, and all the effects units, model names and manufacturers.
I really enjoy Billy and his playing... but man after hearing this same story for about the 8,000th time it really makes ya wish he could talk as well as he plays.

Love you brother!
Billy Sheehan IS The Secret Weapon!!!
Does not have more logic to use the crossover before the overdrive pedal? Low signals to the clean loop and high ones to the input of the pedal, instead of being after the compressor?
you are a bass god!!!
a great bass player
He's the only person I've ever heard say anything good about Line 6 gear
every band use line 6 wireless, is a standard. But other thing from line 6 is another story
Sounds like he has a ground issue when he releases the mute on his strings.
Sabine RiverAuthority too much in the signal chain and separate p/u wired will do that, basically too basses in one,not surprised he has ground issue
I always thought he used a little bit of chorus on the bass tone :P
It's probably the way he has his high end EQ set up. You can see the "frown" on his graphic EQ, whereas many players will have a "smile" there.
Long live Billy
2:10 That harmonic man...
Rodri Antoniak dattt
São boas as armas dele, começando pelo contra-baixo!
6:24 what song is playing?
Coffee drinks Billy Sheehan when it's lazy.
What's the song at the beggin?
Athinter It is the ending to the song "The Other Side"
subtitled pls!!
love u billy!!
Everyone knows Billy is a bassist you don't f*ck with.
lol......dude plays like a monster.
this guy....damn
He runs his clean channel through a distortion pedal. Did you get that folks?
He's great, but too funny!
yeah and highs to big 15" speaker.. lows to bunch of 4x10" speakers :D
LOL 2:09 that split second is all you need to know there is something wrong with this "bass" player! LOL
BILLY SHEEHAN & MARCO MENDOZA... THE BEST BASS PLAYER ON THE PLANET
Genius You...
What bass does Billy have?
Yamaha Billy Sheehan Signature Attitude 3
So.... I'm just beside myself right now. You're doing all that you do on bass, which is complicated enough, at least to me, but then you decide to throw your right foot into the mix, and now you're playing bass and piano at the same time....all while providing back up vocals. 😳......🤯
why every time I watch a interview with a bass player they always say BASically?
2:10 excuse me?!
It's a pinch harmonic
Billy Bass University
A man and his paint 🎨 brushes...
