I hope this gets explored in the future. Like in the 3rd game, the main villains are a secret group of evil psychonauts who use their powers for horrific deeds and crimes. One of them could be the one who started the fire because of his sick pleasures. God, imagine if Mills finds out. That fight between her and the man who took the children’s lives away could be one of the greatest moments of the game, serving as an epic plot twist and excellent character development.
@@liamerolduffy7738 I hope a third game comes out as well, but considering that Psychonauts 2 wraps up Loboto from Psychonauts and Psychonauts Rhombus of Ruin... it seems a little unlikely.
What's interesting is that Milla said the player was lucky she had her nightmares under control or else those "things" could take you to a world of pain o _ o
One of the original plot ideas for the game actually centered around this Easter egg. Milla was supposed to accidentally let the Nightmares escape, after which they would then attack the campers, but the idea was canned early on because Tim "couldn't see her ever letting that happen."
That be what trauma does to someone, especially something like that. Even one death of one loved one caused when one is (for lack of a better term) distracted can cause this type of grief.
I totally agree, the way most of her mind is this loud and flashy party that distracts from the dark and traumatic corners of her mind is so accurate to how it really is.
Games like this one or American McGee's Alice/Alice Madness Returns or Pocket Mirror sure know how to treat with these things like mental health or trauma.
Poor Milla. Despite the title, I doubt that trauma like this is something that a kind-hearted person like her can ever really get over. Come to terms with maybe, but tragedies like this can never be forgotten.
To forget those experiences would be to admit none of the lives lost mattered enough to her to think about, which someone as child-loving as Milla would never admit.
I think its more like when she visits that trauma, it cages herself in. Raz is his own person, but theres a way in and a way out both inside the cage. The cage might be whats keeping her sanity
Psychonauts was hilarious, but I loved how there were these hidden dark tones and subtle tragedies underneath the quirky setting. Like most of the memory vaults, or those twisted faces in the asylum sky...
There's a reason I live by the words of "Kindness is the strongest trait of all." Because it's so easy to cave in, be cruel to those who have hurt or wronged you. That's why Milla's character makes me smile, genuinely so. Instead of letting the past define her, she grew to not only better herself and grow strong but to learn from her mistake and stay smiling. Milla will always be my absolute favorite character in this game.
I love how this is actually a representation of a *healthy* way to deal with trauma. She's well aware that the nightmares exist, she's not surprised that you've found them, and that sort of shit doesn't just go away...but also, they're under control and tucked away in a corner of her brain that she keeps separate from her everyday life, they're not rampaging through her mind out of control.
Yeah, and she's more concerned that Raz's ten-year-old brain isn't ready to be subjected to such a horror when he breaks in. Also, the fact that there are no mental cobwebs means that she still revisits the trauma quite a lot, but as you said, it doesn't completely rule her life. Unless you count her slightly overprotective feelings toward the campers. I should really play this game.
This room was for a cut sub-plot about Milla's Nightmares being released, but the devs decided that didn't fit her character. As such, the only other appearance of the Nightmares is in Milkman Conspiracy.
It was probably the actual kids yelling too but in the game it’s just one person whispering but in reality she’s hearing them yell for help and hearing them burn alive
Milla's Dance Party was my very most favorite level, I would totally love to live there, how shocked I was to find the most darkest moment of the entire game there as well...
So, an early draft of the game's story was that during Raz's training, Milla's nightmares were actually going to break out, escape her mind, and infect other minds, and the story of the game at that time was that Raz had to bring them all back. This was dropped because, as an veteran Psychonaut, Milla would have better control of her mind. (It is unknown if the 2 Nightmares you fight in The Milkman Cobspiracy were intentionally placed there as Boyd's nightmares, or if that was left over from that earlier draft)
Yeah, the lack of any dialogue or context when you get attacked by Boyd's nightmares really makes it feel like Raz is used to it happening at that point, even though it's his first encounter.
It might actually be her fault, you see her handing out food in one scene, and when she discovers the fire she's carrying groceries.... It's possible she left the stove on, causing this.
Bro, if you weren't expecting this and you found it for the first time: it honestly tripped you the fuck. I think this is the first moment most players realized this game's world is a Crapsaccharine World and it's not afraid to get a bit dark.

Those kids were before she met Sasha so it makes sense her name would still be me-la
Interestingly, the Nightmares say Milla (as in Mill-ah) which we know from Psychonauts 2 is the correct way to say it since it is short for Camilla. She says she likes the new way it's said (Me-yah) but I wonder if it's because whenever she hears the original way it's pronounced she thinks of the children crying out for her.

Considering some of the humor is quite dark and the game is full of many dark undertones (like why Raz entered the camp), I'd say its most definitely not a kid's game. It's also rated T for a reason.
Fun fact and hope people open their minds to this but this is why psychonauts was sitting on a throne in alice madness returns american mcgee does a nod to the whole story line with this little bit of info alone....
A good nod due the fire stuff and the mental health theme. But seriously, I wonder if Raz was sent to the past and went into Alice's mind but couldn't survive...
Talk about 0 to 100
OMG :O
how they’re wearing pyro masks too 😭😭
Cuz the kids died being burned so o the nightmare manifest as something that has to do with Fire
I want this to be exploited in Psychonauts 2 !
