SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle is a tactical shooter, developed by Sierra Northwest and published by Sierra Entertainment for Microsoft Windows-based PCs. It is the seventh installment of the Police Quest series.
As the first first-person shooter of the Police Quest series, SWAT 3 received a new game engine with cell and portal technologies for simulation of environments and advanced AI and ballistics. The developers spent some time consulting with LAPD SWAT, including a real-life SWAT element leader and LAPD SWAT founder Daryl Gates in order to create an accurate, realistic simulation. Most of the animations in the game were motion captured from a real-life SWAT officer. Unlike many other first-person shooter games, SWAT3 places an emphasis on realistic police methods and tactics, including proper room clearance, use of less-lethal weaponry, ordering compliance and arresting enemies rather than shooting on sight, and differentiating between authorized and unauthorized use of lethal force.
SWAT3 is set in 2005 in Los Angeles, with the player assuming the role of a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officer, leading a five-man element of computer-controlled teammates. Los Angeles is due to host a major, United Nations-brokered nuclear disarmament treaty signing attended by a number of world powers, including the United States, Russia and China. LAPD SWAT is tasked with protecting the treaty event and the attending dignitaries from a number of violent criminal and terrorist groups seeking to either abuse or disrupt the treaty signing event for their own ends, culminating in a direct nuclear threat to the city and an attack at the treaty signing event itself.
SWAT 3 also includes a multiplayer mode, including traditional Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes, as well as Cooperative play using the single player missions.
SWAT 3 was met by positive critical acclaim, attracting praise for its graphics and AI sophistication, and also spawned a successor, SWAT 4 which was released in April 2005, developed and published by Irrational Games and Sierra owner Vivendi Universal.
Legend says that if you turn off all the lights in your house and stand in front of a mirror holding a candle, and say "sonny jim" 3 times, Gggman shows up and says "shiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeettttttt"
shieeeett..
HorrorUberAlles legend says that if you say it 4 times, he shows up and says "Röcket launcher" in that weird way he says it
And puts vegemite on his fingers and rubs it in your ears
And if you stand in the center of a pentagram with reuben sandwiches on the end of each point and say "well let's find out, shall we?", you will receive an autographed copy of F.E.A.R with the blurb replaced with ggg's "If I were on an island with only one game to play..." hypothetical.
XD
This game had some revolutionary details to it for it's day, some of which aren't even used contemporarily because dev team leads consider them a waste of time in the current market: eye movement, incapacitated animations and sounds, permanent bullet casings, empty mags, and other objects, variable impact damage markers, variable penetration based on material and bullet type, blood trails for wounded targets, etc. For a turn of the millennium game, it was phenomenal and currently it shows just how rushed and lacking in attention to detail many games are.
Damn I hope these was added into the game tho, always nice to have the game more detailed.
Have you seen the new gameplay for ready or not? It’s kind of like a spiritual successor to the swat franchise. What are your thoughts on it if so
@@kgoon4689 It looks like SWAT 4 with upgraded visuals and gear modularity. I personally don't see it living up to the hype, given how much it looks like a hard copy of that game: a game that lacked the charm and attention to detail of its predecessor, and didn't really improve on the formula, where it should have.
@@TwinklesTheChinchilla it’s still only in an alpha state though and it’s already getting pretty good feedback stuff is subject to change
@@TwinklesTheChinchilla this game was also aiming to be realistic. I don’t expect this level of detail in Halo. (For obvious reasons). I do expect this level of detail in Rainbow Six
One of the greatest tactical shooters. Some of the best AI to date. I think it tops SWAT 4 which is pretty great, too.
Agreed!
Yes, been looking for this comment.
"Handcuffing the enemies is tedious and it's often quicker to just shoot them"
Yeah, I guess you won't be joining a SWAT team any time soon.
On the contrary, I think he's a shoe-in.
Actually, he probably will
If you play the game on hard you almost have no choice but to kill all the suspects because of how fast they can kill you. In SWAT 4 you're actually penalized for shooting unarmed suspects

2002 was also one of the best years for video games ever: Warcraft 3, Morrowind, GTA3, Mafia, Dungeon Siege, Age of Mythology, Hitman 2, BF 1942, Stronghold Crusader, Disciples 2, Neverwinter Nights, Medieval: Total War, HOMM 4... Easily 5k+ hours of gameplay
And that was just pc, add console games from that year to the mix
It's an awesome year! The only complain from this list is that GTA 3 was released in 2001.
PC version of GTA 3 was released in May, 2002. Vice City for consoles was released in 2002 and in 2003 for PC. Shows how strong those years were.
1996-2004 were all great years for video games in my opinion.Along with 1992-1994.
yessssss MAFIA!
I'd switch out Dungeon Siege with Jedi Outcast but yeah, good year.
1992 and 1998 still beats it though.
I just got this off Steam about a month ago and it's amazing. Red and blue team AI is on point and can even be tweaked via the settings. I have Suspect AI jacked way up and some of the gunfights are intense as hell. If you expect to be dropping enemies like crazy and soaking up shots this definitely isn't for you. One Suspect boxed in can literally mean life and death, the game really stresses this point so I don't find dying to be frustrating at all. Amazing sound effects, excellent replay value, serious tone, steep learning curve. Everything down to the ammo you choose can be tweaked (Breaching shells versus buckshot, hollow point versus FMJ, etc) and you can even mix and match. For instance I like having at least 5 magazines of FMJ against body armor and adversaries behind cover. If you assign a team member a shotgun and order him to breach, he'll blast it open instead of using the C4 charge. Sometimes suspects will try to trick you by surrendering and if you don't cover or cuff them they'll pick the gun back up and shoot you in the back of the head, lol. You also get points for confiscating the guns. The list of tactical realism is just astonishing for an old game. I would recommend this to ANYONE who loves Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon.
"You are in my way sir"
"I WILL PUNCH YOU IN THE SOUL!"
The music in this game was amazing, it reminded me of something you'd hear from a 90s crime documentary. It really sets the atmosphere.
Yeah this review is really crappy. The music in this game were and still to this day are AMAZING! And sets the whole tone for the atmosphere. Suits the game perfectly! Crazy, 1999 game and still lives up to this day! Replaying it right now and still loving it as much! The only thing that age badly isnthe graphics but STILL! Even this don't look all that bad at all!
@@metalnat27 interesting how people are going back to the old games after getting frustrated with new ones))) SWAT 3 and 4 are truly gems of the gaming industry, such a shame there’s no successor to them.
"it's often easier to just gun them down"
god bless america
Its a pity there are no dogs to shoot, immersion ruined.
I played it alllllll the time as a kid.
Stack up. Breach, bang and clear. Go when ready.
type "Handsup" in console to see your weapons.
3 years later but if you put -handsup as a command on the games shortcut you won't have to do it every single time.
@@petervenkman9838 five month laters, someone actually made a mod to show weapon sprites.
@Dreamzz modb.
@Dreamzz Right click on the shortcut of the application and at the location box type -handsup after the C:Sierra/Swat 3 or something else.
@DreamzzSearching "Swat 3 weapon sprite mod" will do.
Damn nice new intro, much less intrusive than the prior one.
Since you covered this, are Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six videos coming any time soon? They are the absolute tits.
They're far from the absolute tits and the only one I can get working on Windows 7 is Ghost Recon, so yes to that.
Guten tag
Heresy! Ghost Recon is fucking nice Sonny Lord, and Rainbow Six is good to go from GOG
Ghost Recon is good, the old R6 games not so much anymore.
Gggmanlives I can understand...what about Raven's Shield?
Swat 4 is the best. You ain't no badass when you storm a castle with a bean bag gun.
Open and clear, bang it!
Sir Derpington You're in my way sir.
Any of you guys tried the elite forces mod? It's pretty damn good from what I've played.
MultiGreenwood Nope, but i will try it. I just hope it's popular in my region. Finding a good barricaded suspect's server on vanilla is hard enough.
Sir Derpington fuck i wish that game was on steam, i know its on gog but i dont want to make an account.
There haven't been any tactical shooters to match SWAT 3 and Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear.
That was the peak of the genre, now everything sucks.
The Examined Life (of Gaming)
well, there's SWAT 4
Ready or Not is supposed to be released somewhere this year
tbh i dont think it will
@@hassandabo6288im so sorry you were hyped
@@fruitylerlups530 Mhm I was heavily devistated by the results. Such a shame
Aw man perfect timing! I just started playing Hamachi SWAT 4 with some mates after its GOG release.
Great content as always, thanks for the video!
I like S.W.A.T 3 more than 4, mostly because it isn't so stingy about you killing people, I mean it's still encouraged to arrest them, but it isn't the same level as having to equip non lethal gear on all your squad members, and hoping that the enemy doesn't know how to shoot.
You can still blast bad guys in 4. Just make sure they shoot first.
Yeah, but you can still get penalties for taking precautionary lethal measures in Swat 4. I hate how you can't shoot suspects running straight towards you without penalties, until the second they're an inch in front of you and blast you.
Yes that true also, that theres is more tactical shooting in swat 3, where suspect leans peek against you. and you have to be more specific or quicker to take them down than in swat 4. Where they will just yell ''THE COPS ARE HERE'' and just act suprised when you shoot them.
That's probably one of the reasons I also prefer 3 over 4.
new intro? now I have to riot
every video you upload is good
Nigga has to get on DP
Salokin Sekwah That would be awesome
Except Fistful of Frags, his most disliked video.
So I'm guessing this means you'll be reviewing SWAT 4 at some point, since it finally came out on GOG? I'm not super big into shooters, but SWAT 4 is one of my absolute favorite PC games.
Sam Vimes if you don't like shooters why do you watch this channel just curios
It's not that I dislike shooters, it's just not a genre I play that much. But the reason I'm subbed is just because I really like his reviews, they're always objective and well made, and you don't see a lot of that on youtube.
The radio charter in this game was SO GOD DAMN GOOD
PC Gamer had a demo that I played a hundred times when it came out. Great video!
There is an overlooked game out there called Terror Strike (The Regiment, in the UK) that's similar to SWAT and R6 but has one thing that makes it better then both: speed. To be successful and get the high score you need to clear rooms fast and with accuracy. R6 becomes a corridor crawl that involves creeping around corners and shooting guys before they see you, which I don't think is how these hostage rescue guys operate in real life.
Huh, never knew The Regiment was released outside the UK and in a different title.
Still one of the best memory of my childhood
I spent hours playing this, I clearly remember how a difficult, long mission can go perfectly until everything totally goes to shit in seconds due to bad luck....
Gman, have you ever thought about reviewing the Metroid Prime series? I'm sure you've heard of them but I've notice you haven't reviewed them. I'd love to see what you have to say about those games. Metroid is one of my favorite game series.
Second
Everything In The Rain It would be interesting to hear his thoughts on console shooters, or even console games with shooting elements, but aren't necessarily shooters, like Ratchet and Clank
5persondude if I'm not mistaken he only reviews games that are shooters. From the videos I've seen of his that's the impression I get anyways.
i doubt it considering Nintendo will fist his channel a new one with it's draconian policies with youtube videos.
I played this with Spanish subtitles, it was very funny. One of my first games for PC, I have good memories of this game.
Everyone talks about swat 4 but it’s 3 for me…..this game was my childhood. So many memories waking up early before school to play a few levels and countless Saturday mornings playing this for hours accompanied with blueberry pop tarts….god I miss my childhood. The sound of the enemy’s Ak-47 popping off still hunts me to this day.
If you've played this game back in the day, your muscles are probably still twitching between pressing the 4 and the 2 fromthis game
Real fun game. For some reason, game publishers seem to think games like this wouldn't sell today or something.
A SWAT successor called Ready Or Not is coming out this November. A gameplay trailer and pre-orders with beta access is also coming out soon in July.

Great game but fuck that sewer bomb searching level.
When I was a kid the first thing that I did in that mission was throwing a gas grenade. BIG mistake.
Hell gas grenades don't help at that mission at all since most of the enemies, except for maybe one guy, have gas masks.
haha, same here, I remembered I never got out of that level.
Best part of doing homework at 4AM is that I'm just in time to catch Aussie uploads.
Your new intro is so much better! Nice!
I am fully prepared for your SWAT 4 review and the onslaught of Spoony references it will bring.
One of the best bullet penetration systems ever made. There are even separate sprites for entrance and exit holes.
Loven the new intro man, not like the other one was bad, but i like when it's short and nice to look at.
My Dad loved playing this game with me watching him, never really got into them myself, was more a pure shooting fan rather than Tactical shooting but eh everyone has different tastes I guess.
enjoyed this game so much many years ago, I'd forgotten about it till now, I'm going to have to go find my CD of it now, I useto play this with a voice control program made me feel like I was really in control. thanks for the review dude 👍
Aww I kinda liked the old intro. It was cool how it showed all the different games and stuff.
I had it for 3 years, it was getting old.
You just needed to swap out the footage in all the squares every now and again - the concept was really cool. Your new one gets the job done, but it's not really cool, IMO.
Whatever creams your jeans though.
So cool for you to do a video on this classic. How about taking a look at Redline? Or Heavy Metal FAKK
Loved playing this game during my childhood....currently playing SWAT 4 for nostalgia.....
i had a CD demo thing as a kid and played it so much.
i had a version of this where there was a load of other weapons, and you could change their overalls to camo and stuff, and a bunch of other missions. i dont remember now though was like 20 years ago. i remember there were some sweet machine guns n tings
It was the chimera mod. Everyone that played online had it.
Do a review for Delta Force game series or for Black Hawk Down.
So are you going to reviewing Rainbow Six Vegas any time soon?
Or finally reviewed Midway Games. Which had been currently masterpiece that being overshadowed by recognize game such as Psi-Ops, Area 51, Stanglehold and Blacksite?
I have fond memories of playing this back in the day on a demo disc. Whether or not I like the outcome of the review, I find your reviews always fair Gggman. I'm happy in your work and definitely think these games are getting the reviews they deserve. Thanks for pointing the spotlight on our favorite classics. Hopefully your reviews prompt a possible remake to one of the games you review. Have a great 2017.
This was the PC first game I ever bought, and I was maybe 10 years old back then, early 2000's. Our family had a Pentium 2 PC, which was heavily outdated for that time.
I installed Swat 3. It took a lot of time on my crappy PC, and then I started the game. It refused to run. I was so sad!
And my parents weren't tech savy at all, and so, I had to wait like, for another 2 or 3 years till I got a PC that could run SWAT 3.
Oh boy, I had such a good time back then playing SWAT 3... it felt so awesome!
nice review, this game was my childhood and it was difficult and unforgiving but winning a mission with every enemy handcuffed was so satisfactory i just love it, and the music and some eviroments were very creepy for me when i was a child, again nice review very fair as always
I remember thinking what an aweful game this was, because I thought I had downloaded SWAT 2, which was a top-down strategy game, but then started playing it and was pleasantly surprised.
Nice new intro man! Keep up the good work
Great new intro! I'm waiting for your review on SWAT 4 :)
"handcuffing get's pretty tedious, it's better to just gun them down" - Officer GmanLives
a ...few more weapons? lol. there was an incredible mod base with hundreds (!) of guns. i truly loved this community, this was an incredible motivation in learning english, respecting law enforcement and ethics. also, one of very few games with a paintball mode. beautiful game design allover. remember the 56k dialup sounds... oh man. thank you for releasing this vid, on my birthday :-)
This is the best Swat game ever made. The ai of the npc are still impressive. They are even better than swat 4. It seems like these developers/producers focused on the details.. The npc's realistic reactions and acting.
I love your videos man. So damn good
This game looks badass, I'm gonna have to play this some day
great review also live the new intro of your name it's nice
I used to love Swat 3. When I had my first PC around 2001, it was the only game I ever had for it lol. Used to have alot of fun with mods, too, as it was the first game I had ever played that had mod support.
I hated that computer so much though... It was a Cicero pre-built cheapo with an AMD Athlon, discrete graphics and Windows ME on it. I tried to install Quake Wars on it and it literally bricked the Mobo lol.
When I compare that PC with the one I have now, it's literally like jumping from flint knives to razor blades lol.
I hope you'll also review the sequel SWAT 4, the "Hands where I can see 'em"-simulator, still one of my favorite LAN-Party titles to this day and age, see how it fares for you in the singleplayer aspect.
Awesome review, really loved Swat 3 and the expansion pack really made the game so much better. Also Swat 3 has a mod called Last Resort that adds tones of new weapons, character models, support for higher resolitions and also adds player weapons models. Really worth checking that mod out.
SWAT 3 > SWAT 4
Absolutely. S.W.A.T. 4 is still good, but it had so much missing compared to S.W.A.T. 3 that it offers the lesser experience.
I like the first person weapon models in 4.
Incorrect. I grew up with SWAT3 but SWAT4 is superior in every way, going back to SWAT3 a few weeks ago was a real eye-opener.
wtf are you talking about dude? I've played both games and I played SWAT 3 years before 4 and I will be the first to admit that SWAT 4 improves every single aspect of gameplay from graphics to voice acting to controls. It is better in everyway then 3. Both are great games but 4 is objectively a better game
@@Deathfromabove5 But what about your squad A.I.? They actually clear rooms before saying clear in 3. Plus they are better at combat, such as actually taking cover compared to 4 where they just stand in the open.
Sexi new intro. And an awesome review as always man !
😲😲😲 so much nostalgia here!!
Guys do you remember the hidden door on the church mapp, spend hours finding that goddamn bishop the first Time!
Loved that game so much, all my chilldhood
I really love your reviews man, keep it going! =)
I miss this game man, was one of the first games I played that was Multiplayer and you worked as a team not a One Man Army something many games are lacking now days.
I remember modding this game so your team had Lacey Police department uniforms. Good times.
You have played all of these games I thought were obscure. Great channel.
the community feeling was exeptional and has never been reached again for me
Great video :) Diggin that new intro
SWAT 4 review gg?
Yeah.
I always think about SWAT 4 when somebody mentions tactical shooters but when I see screenshots of SWAT 3, I instantly have those memories with the weird eyes and minimalist hud. Both of them are excellent but the third game had a more distinct style.
This look's excellent, I have the first Police Quest game for the Amiga, entirely different, it's funny how this could even be related. I'm definitely going to look into getting a copy of this. Great review
Ah the 2000s was a good set of years to gaming.
Looking forward to SWAT 4 review :) One on my favourite game primary Multiplayer :)
Great review, however what I find that makes SWAT3 GOTY have such replayability is that there is so many custom mods available for it. With custom weapon mods, Uniform mods, and mods that customize the way the commands are given ...and the like. Also there are now special mods that allow for higher resolutions. Since the WAN servers were taken down by Sierra, the only way you can play this game in a multiplayer setting is via a LAN connection. Even so the game still plays flawlessly with very little lag if any. There are also thousands of custom maps available and its simple to add them.
Love this game. The bullet holes are great in this game
Hey GGG, will you ever review Kane & Lynch series? I think the games are criminally underrated - especially the first one. Soundtrack by Jesper Kyd is incredible and the plot is great, too. The game feels like a Michael Mann movie. Second game is very different but still very unique in a sense. Really suggest checking the series out.
Sick intro man!
I take it you'll be reviewing SWAT 4 too? That's my personal favourite. Everything great about SWAT 3 but tweaked in all the right ways. Extremely memorable missions too.
You should just review an old Police/Space/King's/Hero's Quest one day, just to shake things up. April 1st idea?
Can i suggest making a Sanity Aikens Artefact - review ? I think it's a hidden gem , that most of modern gamers never even heard about. It's in my top 10 games for shure... or is it just me ).
SWAT 3 is so much better than SWAT 4. Also you can just order your men to restrain civilians and put in a console command for full body awareness with gun models. Check out last resort mod for high resolution support.
I remember getting a Sierra demo disc that had this, a random whodunnit (Gabrielle or something?), Homeworld and 'King's Quest: Mask of Eternity'. I could just be nostalgic but had a blast playing through Mask of Eternity, I'd like to see you review that!
Never played SWAT 3 but SWAT 4 is definitely in my top 10 FPS games.
you're in my spot sir ....move it....your're in my way sir...
i love this game and play this game 90's
I'll be assuming you're going to take a look at SWAT 4 next. Looking forward to that.
3 comes after 4, so yeah :)
Hold on, 3 comes after 4?
No 4 comes after 3
And 2 comes before 12.
I haven't played any swat game before and at first I wanted to play Swat 4 right away because everyone says it's so good but now I wonder if I should play Swat 3 as well because aside from outdated graphics it seems to be a great game as well
I know this is an old comment but play both and see which you like better, they are both amazing games with stories and missions worth playing for both
Goddamnit, now I can only ever envision you as the Doomguy.
Great video, by the way.
love the game. still have the disc version and played the crap out of it with a friend of mine back then. certainly agree that when you die just shortly from completing the level, is frustrating. also agree that arresting every single one is tedious but then again, its a tactic shooter were you have to do things slowly anyway.
part 4 did improve on the order giving. instead of selecting the order your team has to do like cuffing a guy, you just point and press the USE key. so this makes things easier and also faster.
i guess you will be doing SWAT 4 next. that was also on GOG and i got it when it was on special. i payed for the bundle that included 3 and 4 plus add on for part 4. great deal. no regrets. felt good playing them again.
Man I sinked hours of my life into this game when I was a kid, the game still works perfectly well on its original disk.
This game is the peak point in Police procedural simulations of Sierra starting with the Police Quest adventure series, the game has a complete no nonsense simulation attidue. Swat 4 is also a good game but it leaves some simulation aspects behind l inclines more on the action Fps genre.
There's a SWAT game for PS2 that was amazing too, a slight bit more arcady but so much fun.
Like the new intro!
You should review Insurgency.
Alex amazing game. nuff said
I bought it for $3 during the sale and I'm really liking it.
like your new intro!
kewl new intro!
fps games around early 2000s were had that awesome feel
Ah yes this was a game I had alot of fun with. Great review keep it up!
Loved the review, played this a ton back when the GOTY edition came out
