Soldier of Fortune: Payback is a first-person shooter video game and the third installment of the Soldier of Fortune game series. Unlike the previous two Soldier of Fortune games, which were developed by Raven Software utilizing the Quake 2 and Quake 3 engines, Payback was developed by Cauldron HQ,developed with Cauldron's in-house CloakNT engine, used in their previous first person shooter game, Chaser. It is the first game of the series released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game was released on 14 November 2007.

Activision did release it as a budget game though, so they knew it was terrible.
fml when I was (sort of) young, and the ps3 just was released, my dad found that at a PAWN SHOP right after it came out, so he bought it...
and it sat in the case for 8 years then I pulled it out and realized how shit it was for the time.

They set development to their budget division. They made it terrible. That's what Cauldron was.
This game was published by "Activision Value". It's literally shovelware.
Shame that it couldn't be a proper Soldier of Fortune game with Raven developing it.

Muzzle flash is actually very unrealistic, it comes from movies where they use blank ammunition.
There's little to no flash with real ammunition.

Indeed, lots of flash coming from Ian's very short AK, but not a single one from Karl's gun, which has a muchlonger barrel and a flash hider.
I would say that a short barrel with a powerful ammunition and no flash hider would lead to muzzle flash.
I remember Soldiers of Fortune for the SNES. That game was pretty fun.

I was a kid once, too.
The only good thing about this game is reloading animation.
It's like they made the reloading animations first and then ran out of budget.
And then proceeded to reuse those same reload animations for almost ten years. Seriously, "Reload", that target shooting game that Gggman reviewed a while ago uses almost all of the same weapon models and animations as this since that was made by a studio that's a sister company of the devs that made SoF:P.
I think the animations were used in Secret Service as well. Has the same hitbox error as well.

The assets in this game are from secret service. Oh and the shotgun reload animation tho!

The problem with Payback is how inferior it is to the original. And while Double Helix had some BS difficultly spikes, at least there was the gore.
With Payback, the gore was still pretty lackluster. Yeah, it's neat the first few times, but it gets old real quickly.
I personally don't think it's as bad as most people say it is, but it isn't very good either. It's just kind of average.
The sad thing is, the engine used for this game is also used for History Channel: Battle for the Pacific and Secret Service 2008, two games that are even subjectively worse than Soldier of Fortune: Payback.

Lol me too. I thought it was better than modern warfare (i had played it before) just because the gore is so good. I think i replayed it like 10 times just for the sake of gore. In hindsight it's a fking shit game

Hey Gggman! Have you played Chaser? I think it doesn't deserve the reputation it has. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit even though it had obvious flaws. When it worked it worked beautifully in my opinion. It does suffer from a lack of polish, but it's overall a very good game I think.

its a bad game. really bad, but that doesnt mean its not enjoyable. i played it and had fun going through it.
but the game itself is just utter garbage. it just happens to be fun garbage.
i kept playing cuz i had fun with the weird bugs and glitches in the game. and everytime when you think you saw all of them, the game fucks up even more and presents you with a weirder glitch. but i havent encountered any gamebreaking bugs. so thats fine. its just a game that you dont play for graphics or a for well developed mechanics.

Muzzleflash like moths to a flame. Thats fucking great. I seriously love your scripts. I saw a sunny jim force wheat flakey doll in an antique store window where I live and instantly thought of your videos.
Wow, I actually like this game at the time. I remember I tried to run in on a Pentium 4 with a geforce FX5500 and failed, later on I bought another PC and could finally play, and the graphics was just stunning!
Due to the gore, weapon customization in single player & few small things, when this came out, I tried so hard to like it. The only good thing about this game is looking it up online (to fix its issues on release) I got introduced to SOFII.
I remember at the time this came out I was just obsessed with any FPS that had multiplayer. I'd just buy them all. This was the only game I've ever bought where the guy at the counter warned me against is as I was pulling my money out. Unfortunately, I didn't listen to him.

Personally, I loved Soldier of Fortune: Payback. Multiplayer was great.
I enjoyed it too as a kid. But, I don't know why I bought this unknown game over others

I never played the SoF multiplayer, so I can't really comment on that, but I absolutely loved the SoF2 multiplayer. This one's multiplayer was fucking terrible, I feel like 90% of the time I spawned directly in the line of fire of another player, and with no spawn protection, this lead to a death before you could do anything. Outside of the respawns that killed the MP experience on their own, it just wasn't really that fun. Oh well, at least my copy came bundled with a Rambo: First Blood DVD.

Whenever reviewers say "it looks like a **insert previous gen console** game" they usually are exaggerating, and they are aware of it. Go look back at 'BLACK', that was an astonishing looking PS2 game when it was released, yet it still looks worse than this. Find a PS2 game that looks better than this.

So GG, given that Space Hulk:Deathwing is about to come down on us what about review about Space Hulk:Vengeance of the Blood Angels? Although it''s not strictly an FPS game it still has some action and if anything it would be interesting to see how 20 years of videogame industry can change something.

I got to play with one of the best Soldier of Fortune: Payback players as a kid after the game was completely dead. I looked on the in game leaderboard on texted him through Xbox and he got on and beat me to an absolute pulp. Also, I just want you to know I cherished this game a lot, despite being absolutely horrible at it and the game itself being bad, because my mom bought it for me, and I didn't see her very often growing up. Never beat it either.

I actually enjoyed this game, there was so much satisfaction with killing all the mobs. I also enjoyed the multiplayer.

Secret Service has the same hitbox error, I think it was made by the same guys, and even shared animations.
That game also had a pellet of crates on a landing in an underground stairway that for whatever reason I remember. How did they get a forklift up/down some stairs in a narrow tunnel, and why?

So I'll be honest - I had some fun with the MP for this for about a week or so. But it didn't come anywhere near close to the years of enjoyment I had from SoF II's MP.
I remember playing this game on the hardest difficulty, with akimbo pistols. Then beating the game in three hours
I bought this game on PS3, beat it on my birthday and gave it to my friend for Christmas all within the same month.
ah Rogue warrior, the game where one of the back case bullet point feature's was something like "Kill enemies, and count up bodies as you go" truly innovative.
Chaser didn't seem that bad when I played a couple hours of it, never finished it so I don't know if it just gets worse over time. Maybe that would be another game to add on your list.
Cant wait to see the rest of the Cauldron FPS games reviewed :) Secret Service (with Nolan North) & The History Channel FPS Trilogy (the two Civil War FPS games & Battle for the Pacific *which has two different versions, content wise on both PS2 & 360/PS3/PC&*)

The best and most underrated game ever.. anyone who loves rambo type of game witch is a straight forward killing classic with no messing around game play will want to keep to this game for ever..there is no time wasting in this just simply kick ass and move on to the next man...a classic adventure...would love to see a remake on ps5
I remember renting this from blockbuster and had no idea what it was like. All I had to go off it was name alone because I loved the shit out the original SoF (Never played the second). I sat down to play it and it was like it was over in 30 minutes. Didn't remember anything from it other than when I rushed through the jungle level by running straight for the boss and killing him.
Being banned in your country (Australia), I assume that like many German gamers, myself included, you had to either, download an uncut patch for the censored version, or have the uncut version gifted from someone outside of your country.
I just bought it on Ebay, problem solved.
And you successfully did this without having it seized by customs, like what they always do with other games banned in your country?

Dude, I seriously doubt customs cares about video games, they've got more important shit to look out for. I can't see someone going "WAIT A MINUTE THIS PACKAGE HAS SOLDIER OF FORTUNE PAYBACK IN IT!".
The only thing that's banned is the SALE of the game, the game itself is not illegal, it's not a banned substance or anything.
Hmm. Strange. In Germany, when a game is blocked on Steam simply because it is still indexed or banned, I had to have the game gifted from a friend outside the country, or to have a physical copy of a game that is uncensored, indexed and/or banned, I can just go to Austria and bring it over in my country, or I visit a retro convention or a flea market, in where I can always find such games despite being banned for sale. Germany has very similar problems that Australia has, and that games also get refused classification, except by Germany's own OFLC, the USK, get indexed or have their RC ratings appealed and overturned by the BPjM, the de facto German equivalent of the ACRB, and then get banned from sale by a court. SOF Payback is one game that had the censored version for a very short period after release on Steam while it was still trying to get a USK classification, until the game was indexed, effectively pulled from public sale preventing the censored version from being released in Germany, and then banned by the Munich Court.
+Gggmanlives I knew someone who imported both Manhunt 1 and 2. One of the packages had clearly been opened by customs... Guess they didn't care.
The crazy thing is when I got it on PS3 I got it used from gamestop for 2 bucks. And the original price sicker is still on it at $59.99. Can you imagine? Oh well, for what it is though I still like second half of the game.
Whats also crazy is that this game got a Free to Play Online MP version, only in Asia but by Dragonfly instead of Cauldron. Didnt look half bad either from a gameplay footage point of view.
That's funny how much guns there is in this game and they feel mostly the same.
In a way that's nice they unified most of the programming, but for the rest using an AK, G36, SCAR or whatever AR is about the same, and even the quad barrel pistol is very bland.

i got Chaser as a free game with a magazine, and i really liked it and played it all the way thru.. quite challenging but pretty aight. i cant see why people hate bout it that much, itz a decent game and the story is good aswell :)
Jeez, I don't know how you played this for more than 5 seconds. That bloom/depth of field effect would give me a major headache, Sam I am. I couldn't play it in a box, I couldn't play it with a fox. I couldn't play it here or there, I couldn't play it anywhere.
As soon as I saw the previews for this back in the day I knew it would be banned here in Australia, so I immediately ordered it from CD-WOW for XBox 360. Yeah, it's crap, but it has it's charm.
Chaser was actually critically well received back in the day. I enjoyed it when it came out.

They went from a quite good gore engine to turn enemies into "Gore Piñatas" like the ones in Bioshock Infinite.

Funny thing is, me and my friends are playing this trainwreck of a game on private lan-partys. Why? Because the multiplayer is so buggy its funny. Hitboxes floating in the sky so nobody can hit anyone most of the time, bodys flying with machspeed other the map, painting it red and the flashbangs. Oh god, the time you cant see anything just stacks per flashbang so sometimes you got a white screen for around 1 minute.
I forgot this game existed. I clicked to watch it thinking it was the one with Mickey Rooney.

I agree with everything except the ps2 reference. Yeah it looks bad but compaired to fps games from the ps2 era, it does look better. It looks like your average, shitty low budget xbox360 shooter, which to be fair, it was. Didn't even start out as a SOF game, Activision basically just slapped the title on it so they could sell it.
i like how when you die while aiming down a scope the scope still stays on your screen as you roll on the ground. that just screams quality.
Hated that hit detection BS - the only cure I found is installing SoF3 on weak laptop. But fixing that didnt made game better - it still was below average

2:51 No rear sight! Why does that keep happening in movies, TV shows, and video games?! This came out in 2007, so apparently that trend goes back further than I thought! If you've got a flat-op M-16 or AR-15 with a fixed front sight and no rear sight, you're expected to provide your own sight. Typically, it would come with a folding rear sight as per standard (or it might have a full-length top rail and folding front and rear sights). Why is this so difficult of these laypersons to understand?!

5:30 More likely AKMs. Wait, no. Upon further examination, it actually does look like a pre-1959 third-pattern AK (the type typically referred to as an "AK-47"). Apparently, no one told the developers or programmers that no military or security outfit in the world still uses those. At least not a respectable one.

Game is bad, but because I played this game a lot as a kid when there was not much video games, it still gives me nostalgia. It was so different from other games that it etched into my memory and I still remember those boss fights vividly.

At times a rather irritating game . Into the game,,U can sometimes empty a magesin..into an enemy close up..and after that, then they just kill You.So U have to play the scene over and over
while i definitely do agree it's obvious this is a budget type game, I don't agree it's as bad as you say it is.
after getting over the stupid technical issues with applying full HD resolution through a hex editor and applying vsync for being actually able to hit enemies(issues which IMO shouldn't exist like this on new GOG releases) the game became enjoyable in general....still quite mediocre, but it doesn't seem like they were aiming higher(given it cost me 6.5$ on GOG)

Good review but this game is a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm pretty sure I unlocked every achievement for it too so that's something to be proud of.
The Iron sights on this remind me of ' Purple haze ' that godawful Vietnam game.
great review I don't know if you played this but there's a game called painkiller hell and Damnation that would be cool if you did a review of that.
I couldn't find the source for this but I remember the developer claiming that there wouldn't be any gore in Payback since it was cheesy and outdated, they wanted to go for a more serious and adult tone. Needless to say, the internet was pissed as fuck and the developer made a slap dash gore system last minute. Hopefully someone else can verify this so it's not just my memory from almost 10 years ago.
Finally he got around too this, I've been waiting.
This is just me nitpicking, but the CryEngine was released upon the World years before this travesty, in the form of Far Cry 1. (Gggman clearly meant Crysis, and yes, that was indeed released the same year as Cauldron's Payback, in 2007.)Again, just a minor nitpick. :) Great review as always.
