- I took my THIRTY YEAR OLD Volvo 850 Turbo Auto to a dyno to see how much power it has left after 241,000 miles of hard graft!

Love the Dyno videos
You were asking what car to bring that will blow up. Ford with an eco boom engine is a strong candidate.
You were asking what car to bring that will blow up. Ford with an eco boom engine is a strong candidate.
Evening Geoff. Delighted you're in touch with Dr M Y. The GOAT IMHO.
This is why we love Volvo's Geoff... Once you get the bug it's Volvo For Life!
Agree completely.
Cool car. No way any modern car is going to last like this. Tell your man, blank TDKs are worth money now. Don't throw them out.
Please mount 205-50-16 tires instead of 205-55-16... It looks so much better and that's how it came out of the factory
What about taking your Volvo to Norfolk for a road trip?? Perhaps put some MUGS on the back seat!!!! Did you get around to using an alternative shipper? I'm guessing not as I haven't received the mugs yet which I ordered last December. 😢
1994 from the good old times Volvo was a Swedish car.
Although my 5 pot Volvos are diesels, I just love the sound of 5 cylinder engines. So musical. Nice vid. Geoff.
A now very famous Volvo with the recent distinguished guest!!!!
The real question Geoff is does it have enough power to tow a milk float to a charger ?
Why would you?
With factory reverse intercooler piping fitted the car should respond quite well to some tuning, if you want to go down that road. Not sure where the best place for that is in the UK, but there is a chap over in the states who runs VAST tuning that I've been considering, he offers a custom map built via data logging.
about 205hp is a lot lower than i expected. Maybe for fun inspect filters and the spark plugs? Measure (somehow) if the turbo pressure is down or the turbo is bit worn out?
Filters ok, suspect vacuum leak somewhere
I was expecting it to pump out a bit more but it's possible T5s get worked a lot harder and maybe run a little hotter leading to more wear.
@@GeoffBuysCars also car is old. Original injectors?
Can be so many things worn out, it would be sad and unusual if it is the engine itself. Like ibrstellar1080 mentioned, one of the previous owner might have been very unkind to it.
May well have a slight boost leak, which is very very common, although the boost Gauge is reading close to where it should on a factory car, but the actuators do go soft over time. Shes doing very well for the age and mileage thats not had a stage 0 tune up.
The Diesel is not the same today, so everything is not wear and tear.
3 inch down pipe and free flowing catalytic converter and you can easily get to that 222 horsepower🏁🐎💨💨👍 All The Best in Scandinavia.
Great video 👍 Always wanted a Volvo 850 T5 estate, looks like it's not too late.
Better get one sooner rather later as Mr Schwab won't allow it.
The British automotive industry no longer rates a mention on this channel. Oh wait, there no longer is a British owned car company in the UK! But you have your sovereignty…
nah mate, we make lots still.
You need a Castrol GTX black bomber jacket to compliment that Volvo tie.
Superb.
Skoda superb
An EV will never ever do that milage, environmently friendly throw away cars......,.........
There's already Tesla Model S with more than 450,000 miles....
@@badman1220some will go far, esp if they are driven very often early in life. What will limit most evs is when the batteries expire and owners find it too expensive to replace vs just replacing the whole car.
You’re wrong but nice try.
@@lesstyranny2695 But when someone makes an engine swap on an old car we salute them. 😂 EVs have far less moving parts etc, we’ve only seen the beginning. ICE will be a thing of the past in ten years time.
@@badman1220I doubt it has the same batteries, the mining of the materials needed to make 1 EV car does more damage to the environment than 100 ice cars do in their whole life time of being on the road
Funny you should say Pointless inconvenient Road works (everywhere,) while not repairing pot holes and each city has the back ground sound track (sirens) from the Streets of San Francisco playing most days.
Strange that, I expect it makes them look busy.
I went from Gloucester to Sunderland the other week. Family of 4 of us in my transit custom sport . Cost half a tank of fuel each way , so about £100 in total. If we wanted to catch the train it was going to cost just over £1000 return 😂😂 look forward to the next vid
Volvo did well ,i still use cassettes and any new sealed blank cassette is now near £4 minimum on ebay .
I've got a gen2 Volvo v70,I love it ❤
Nice one, the 94 t5 is very rare even here in sweden, I have a 95 t5, Great cars with a hunger for petrol😅
great video Geoff, looking for my next family car and i have to say the 850/740 is never far from my thoughts, good to see how healthy they seem to be after all the miles and usage on them!
I have the same affiliation to my old Vauxhalls Geoff.
just love them and thanks to you and cherished insurance all tbe road worthy ones get used. 🚘🚗😊
Another successful dyno test on a Volvo. Its amazing how strong the engines are for the amount of miles the car has done.
I always use 99 octane, I get more miles to the gallon (polo gti 2000 reg)
I had a volvo t5 in dark green ,I used to drive it like a race driver. This car can hit 160 mph without breaking a sweat, and the handling is like it's on rails . 4x4 5 cylibder 20 valve, 2.3 turbo with 380 bhp.
Absolutely brilliant, thank you for sharing. I absolutely love volvos. ❤️
My TDK's lasted for years in my old Sony Walkman....that old Sony Walkman even survived a taxi impact that broke my right shoulder and right leg in two places....lol... the taxi got written off.... I walked away fully functional after a few shots of whiskey...
The beast
Bet you felt right at home in Algarve 😅 plenty of Brits. Good to see an old car in good health, a testament of the over engeneering of days long gone. I too have an old girl, 32 years old this year, never let me stranded on the roadside, not even when the gearbox blew up when she was 17. She valiantly limped to the garage with only 3rd and 4th to get fixed.
Is it just me, or are there more roadworks than ever before - yet the roads are getting worse?
I have a 850 T5 in the same red as yours and it has done 26k miles. Stage 1 tuned now, 0 problems!
I've got a 1999 V70 T5 manual with 242K miles on it., still going strong 😁👍
Again, respect where due. Brilliant video and your one in the future of costs over public transport, possibly with ev costs sounds great as well.
Interesting to see the difference in the drivetrain losses between the 2 cars. 19% drivetrain loss for this one and 29% loss for the 432k one.
Great vid so much nostalgia as we had an April 1994 saloon from new in the family (sadly long gone) and that was badged as a T-5 on the bootlid.
Man that’s some dyno went in a saloon came out an estate😂
Keep them coming I love a Volvo me👍
I will guess that is lost lots than 3% of its original power
Lovely, how do you dyno Automatic old school motors? My S60 P2 2.0T doesn't have a option to lock the gearbox, unless your at the right speed and feather the throttle in etc....
T5 yees
12:26 Its been tuned at some point of its life, thats how its making +20hp
Very nice Volvo 850 T. Like your uploads, kudos!
I own and drive a red 1995 Volvo 440 1.8i, manual, hatchback clocked at 148.000 km, the paint job is in a horrible state, but it still runs great, these cars are absolute fun to drive, so I will keep driving it till its beyond repair.
Black smoke out the back on a hard pull is bad turbo seals usually on these cars.
Didn’t sound good to me. Would hitting the rev limited do this?
Geoff - what is the original purchase cost divided current mileage of these Volvo’s? Sounds like a Top Trump category to me.
i logged into spotify to listen to your chat to the Dr, how interesting
Man that speedo comes around real quick hey Geoff
The high octane fuel would help for sure
That wasn't to bad for a car or that age.
Do up the oil, filter & plugs, she'll be good as new 😉
I have been in the Volvo fabric in Gæteborg (Sweden) and thay building great solid cars in that time. 🙂
The 850 was build in Gent, Belgium.
Gothenburg if you don’t have the ö to write Göteborg. The æ is not used in Swedish 😉
Drop in new set plugs and she may do even better
Brilliant video, at the end you said about getting something that would blow up 🤣, would love to see how a high mileage focus ST does on there.
Just brought a v50 T5 on a 04 plate but not a good runner at moment as the pcv hose was broken, replaced it but still having same problems, think I need to do the 2nd hose off the housing unit next
Brought it? I hope you bought it first 😂
My 2008 chrysler 300 has 342K miles . Still squeaks the tires.. come look. Im in washington state
Love the better intercooler routing and the manual (cable operated) throttle body. And the whole car, actually! Look at what good condition the whole dash panel is in.
CRACKING pull at 5.32. Do you need more than analogue instruments like this?
I loved my T5, I bought it from the original owner with 270000 on the clock. It was a bit of a 'triggers broom' car, and all the better for it. I hadn't told my wife what a T5 was, and she was driving it home. When we arrived back in Derby she said,"It's a bit quick, isn’t it? I said,"Is it?
The kids loved it, the wife less so, and eventually stressed me into selling it.😢
And the montage at the end was lovely.
Dyno some more, even like a Mondeo 2.0 di, or a Vectra DTI etc
Chris is the man
If you remember the November dyno day, my 850 T5 manual made 240 with reverse intercooler piping (as with yours, but aftermarket) and a tune from Shem at Shemtek. He is the guru with T5s and definitely worth a visit (my tune was 100 quid)
I did, I couldn't find the footage to drop it in! How's the car, still loving it? I'd tune the T5 but the oil leaks / lambda / suspension bushes need doing first, and I'm holding out for another 850 TDi GLT arriving before I throw money at the saloon
Excellent video pal keep them coming 👍👍💪💪💪COME ON
Happy days.
Garbage.. wasn't enought performance cut that shitty fwd transmission, they also installed auto, which at that generation was dead-sluggish, those cars making some 8 to 9 seconds 0-62mph 😂.. slower than some manual DIESELS, but using WAY MORE FUEL, especially in city run.
If its untouched I will say 170 FWHP before results and comment later->
Wow pretty close :) Nice car.
One more edit: Please pleeeease buff the car with a buffing compound and give it a nice wax. It will looke super good with that color. I have a 850AWD the same color and it just literally popped when I waxed it the first time I had it. The original paint was super dull like this one 😉
just like the old chap and his cakes this was exceedingly good,a simple recipe makes quality content
Only 240k.
My 1.8 petrol - 05 corolla verso has done 270.
Still does 125mph at GPS.
Hi Geoff you can wear your tie with your 3pc suit for your later car chat.
You're stuck in time or very poor. People tend to evolve and raise their quality of life and this involves not holding to things which they could not even afford when new, but also are not suitable the modern world. In all honesty, I believe that nobody gives two shits about how much power your bucket has.
Is it me or do the rear tyres look like they have a taller profile “ like 205 55 16 OE and now 205 60 16 ?? Great video though 👍🏻
You want blow up , any eco boost 4, 6, 8, just be sure it’s not over 35,000 you might loose the valve train or head getting to the dyno.
All the t5 i have had have been slow as a snail except my 850 turbo/T5 whit the same setup as your's i did a stage 1 tune on it and some other stuff to the turbo pushed about 270hp until the headgasket failed
It's funny about the age of cars, even me to me I look at L reg and think 30 years old can't be! But then I am 30 years old this year and also keep thinking "can't be"🤣 still blows my mind when I see like a pretty new looking 2012 BMW or something and then it hits me that very modern looking car is comfortably over a decade old 🤯
Blimey those old 5 pots don’t half sound good, used to be one near where I live with an exhaust that sounded like a group B Audi quattro! 😍
Service with new oil, sparkplugs, air filter, no vacum leaks can do mutch to restore hp
Great video 👍
I cringe when they rev my car for the smoke test at MOT time.
I always expect a big bang 😀
Nice tie! 👍👍
In the speed/power run shot from the left side what were the two red lights flashing on the overhead above rearview mirror?
That tie is mega!!!!
The ‘W’ has fallen off your speaker (sorry) 😂😂😂😂😂
My Kia Ceed has 250k, do u wanna check that? 😂
The Diesel is not the same today, so everything is not wear and tear.
New air filter needed?
What an engine !
mmn, room for improvement, show us...
Big market for sealed cassettes on ebay
Did the 850 come with aircon?
Incorrect - all 850' had cable throttle, etm on me7 s70/v70/c70. Reverse ic has a shorter path. Early cars had conical flange dp and turbo, different ecu aswell.
All 850 T-5s had a cable throttle, it was only when they changed to ME7 ecu on the later X70 cars they changed to electronic throttle.
V/c/s 70 cars. And the later p2 cars too.
Not sure my 307,000 850 2.0 NA would have enough power to climb the dyno ramp!
31mpg is better than I get which is about 28mpg.
Need to do a proper fix today for the broken coolant pipe that dumped on me on the M1 a few weeks ago.
Anyone want a L reg 145 gle?
lol you took the volvo to a dyno lolol
My dad had a p reg 850 salon
About the same as mine. My ex police 2003 V70 T5 has 244K on it and dyno'd about 200.
All 850's have same ic
I’m using an old phone as an I pod that has all my I tunes music on since we can’t buy music from I tunes 👍👍
Rica ecu release the bhp
The auto is not the best gearbox in the 850, flush it If you want it to last is a good advice, AND, drive with a light foot before it up to temp
Those gearboxes are fantastic. I think 241k miles speaks for itself... I had a '93 850 auto and it was easily my favourite gearbox out of the three generations of 850/s/v70 autos I've had. Not the very smoothest, but rarely got a shift wrong and the kickdown was instant, always there when required.
@@fredjones100 a gearbox without a filter that can be changed is not fantastic, I have two with auto at the moment, I prefer an 850 with auto because the manual is not bulit for fun driving.
Just goes to show that there are some nice people in the world, not just me, Geoff.
chris with his shades on looks like the professor from futurama
You could do a test ? 95 octane V 99 octane, price V mpg ?
That was good a little drop in over all horse power but still respectable
