Hi Geoff,i bought my nearly 20 year old MK 1 FOCUS for £900.00 in 2018 at 145500 miles. Its now done 238500 miles. A work colleague seems to think it might have had a new engine in its life. However even so,how many miles had it done before the nearly 94.000 miles that ive put on it. Still very reliable. Regular oil changes every 6 months. Very tatty but still legal, passed its MOT with a couple of advisories. Good for another year.
Yes bought my 2008 mondeo mk4 estate 2.0tdci in 2018 for £850 , i did the cambelt and waterpump first thing and its now today turned 275000 miles, never goes wrong only cruise control intermittent that's it, brilliant motor

I just pictured you stretching all the way to the other side to crank the passenger window up or down while driving! 😜😂🤣 Joking aside, you made a great choice of car. I have the 107 version of the triplets and I love it. Really? Old euro cars are very risky, failed electronics and all that = BIG repair costs and lots of down time, the jags: lots of problems with cam chains and tensioners, Mini's: fun if you can v afford the repair bills, all those french V6 diesels: stay away. Just over a year ago, I got a 2010 civic 2.2cdti, 103k, for £1550. The last owner was a HGV mechanic. Before he arrived I looked underneath and he'd been puting it on a ramp and cleaning it. Best I ever did.

I had an 2010 Alfa 159 ti sportwagon 2.0 diesel in Rosso red. Stock, it was 170bhp and 259lbs/ft of torque. Had it for 4 and a half years and absolutely loved it. Rare as hen's teeth as well.

Travelled from Northumberland to Kendal and back yesterday in a VW Toerag, brought a 1938 Chevy Sedan back on a trailer towed by the Toerag. Faultless journey, did it without having to stop for fuel either
Brilliant video. Spotting the sleepers out there in 2024. Lets be fair..there are a lot of bargains to be had if we ignore the resale value and depreciations and expect £500 repair bills once or twice
When buying cars at this price it is best to keep things as simple as possible. Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar and Audi for example are not the most reliable brands and are a big gamble when they are a few years old and are best avoided unless you have a few grand as back up for repairs (and that completely defeats the object of buying a "cheap" car.) If your budget is £2k buy something that is less complicated and has a good reliability record (Toyota, Honda, Suzuki or Mazda.) In the meantime, you can then save up some more cash and buy something more luxurious later.
I know nothing about Audi or BMW or Jaguar, but I would not touch a Mercedes with a barge pole. I literally, honestly, would not want a Mercedes that was more than 5 years old _even it was free._ Not even exaggerating. They are CRAP. All Mercedes cars fall to bits.
VW Toureg listen to any strange noise from the front axle as they have tapered bearing that wear and start shedding fine metal particles which if left unchecked will destroy your front differential. It's about an 11 hour job to change them.
Yes. I have come to the conclusion that peak car was around 2010. Best design. Best parts used. Best engineering. Everything after has gone downhill fast. We now have bad design. Terrible cheap (not price) parts that break or simply don't even work out the box. Over complex electrics that contribute nothing to the driving experience. They just malfunction and cause huge expense for no gain at all. The golden age of car 1995 - 2010.
Well I bought an old Astra for 150GBP and I got a 2nd Astra thrown in for free. Lasted me well till the wiring loom behind the Speedo caught fire while driving home…luckily I could stick my head out the side window and continue avoiding most of the smoke.
Check the Toureg for noises from the front diff as they have tapered bearing in the differential and they can wreck you diff if they wear out. It's a very expensive job to repair.

Obviously very fond of it and! It was great.. I have 2 11s myself so can do my best help with any parts 👍
4WD means complicated and if it only cost £2000 it means expensive to put right. At this price you want as simple as possible. Great fun to watch two blokes talking about cars (real cars not milk floats!) Keep at it both of you.
My last car was a 56 Reg Honda Civic 2.2 litre Diesel, best car I owned for £1100 with 135,000 miles on the clock and zero failed MOT's, unfortunately I ended up selling as I lost my job and couldn't afford to keep it on the road...
Years ago I valeted cars for a Toyota delaler and they took a BMW 3 series in that had been smoked in. Nicotine or whatever was coming off the windscreen like tarmack. The only way I could get it clean was keep soaking it with rag soaked in hot water. Gutwrenching never forgotton it and that was in the 1980s.
The 407 coupe with the 2.7 V6 diesel is very nice but generally cheap because the VED is £735 on most. The 3.0 hdi coupe is brilliant but less than 50 came to the UK.
My father has a Touareg - it's lovely - smooth, comfortable for me at 6'2 LOTS of leg and head space, good sized boot, bit heavy on the fuel and the tyres are £200 a corner, so there's that - but a nice smooth ride. I have a Citroen Berlingo XTS 2009 bought for in 2016 for £3,000 with just 63k on the clock - it's cost me about £2,000 to get a few things done, but it's been perfect and reliable as my work vehicle as a handyman. Some people have even converted them into small campers and buy interior kits to do that.
Just to bust the Mondeo myth ,and to be pedant, that was the x type. The XF was basically an updated S TYPE and shared it's platform with the last Ford Thunderbird. None of this matters of course as they are all the better for the platform sharing.
This was a brilliant video Geoff, really enjoyed watching you and Tony just going through the back ends of autotrader, watching people do what I spend a lot of my time doing anyway who would’ve thought that would be good 😂
I used to inspect cars for a living for AA, RAC, Trading Standards and Courts and I have never approved a CAT C car fit to purchase. The main reason apart from bad repairs is the salvage yards move these cars with a fork lift and damage the structure in particular the box sections of chassis. While they don't really effect the car on day to day use but in crash they play a big role in how the car holds up because any damage to them greatly weakens there longitudinal strength.
Great vid. Good to see u do something with someone who has a clue..... I'm an alfa lover, started with 155 2l t spark, had a 164 2l and final was 159 sportwagon ❤ never fancied the Brera fancied the GT.
Cat C, D, N or S, the most net environmental car you can buy because it would otherwise get crushed so somebody somewhere would have to make a new one they now don't. Should be zero road tax for a resurrected vehicle in these days of green (sorry Geoff!)
I have a 2010 Alfa 159 saloon. Its not my fav Alfa i have had but its ok. Things to look out for on 159 and Brera are the subframe rot - as they are expensive to replace. Its a very common issue with these cars and not easy to see unless you take the floor off from under the engine to have a proper look. If i have the chance i would rather get a good 156 as they really are fun - but not easy to find anymore
Geoff great video 👍but got to pull you up on a couple of things lol. Xf jag isn't based on a mondeo also the alfa 159 ti does come with another engine option a 3.2 v6
Recently bought a 2007 Mazda5 2.0 petrol T2 for my mum for a 1000, needed to put few hundred for it to pass the MOT, as well as set of new tyres. Sure it looks ratty and drinks a ton of petrol, but it is a bit of a sleeper, very fun to drive and can haul 6 people around
NEW VIDEO IDEA! Cars you wished you'd kept... I used to have a Nissan 200SX S14a tuned up, coil-overs, 280bhp, Skyline stuff bolted on, looked fairly standard. Wicked car. Properly entertaining. Cheap to run and reliable! Got 4k when someone else wrote it off... Would be worth over 30k now if I still had it!
The W880i had HSPDA, 3g+, not GPRS. Mapping apps were available at the time, including the ubiquitous TomTom for Symbian, whch I dutifully pirated for my Nokia E90 (same os, better phone) at the time, too.
I was given a company ute (Toyota Hilux table tray) to drive to and from work, it used to be driven by the warehouse manager. When I got it it was an ashtray on wheels. It took me a few weekends to clean it, the hood lining when I got it was tan coloured. After a good spray with diluted engine degreaser and a good going over with an upholstery cleaner I realised the hood lining was grey.
Well that whole thing made me a bit 'Flacid' ! Ha😂 Seriously though as an Aussie I'm jealous of some of the engine options you guys got that we didn't over here, agree totally on the Vauxhaul thing, however you need to remember the Monaro was a Holden, GM killed the brand by turning the commodore into a Vauxhaul insignia that nobody bought, to tank sales.
There is an TV ad here in New Zealand which shows people shopping for older cars. An expert then tells them what potentially could happen to them in an accident based on the cars crash safety record. The context of the ad is to make people aware of the safety and real world crash data available in helping decide what second hand cars to buy and what to steer clear of. NZ has a shocking road toll. Add safety into the mix of reliable, functional and cost.
Maybe because NZ roads are mostly single lane (head on crashes common), have rubbish surfaces and cambers, and often some frightening consequences if you leave the road edge. On top of that too many drivers tailgate, ute drivers are aggressive, and too many drivers accelerate to beat red lights, women drive-text, and too many tradies and real estate agents like their recreational drugs. Beautiful country though ❤️
Earlier in the video you mentioned the Peugeot coupe with double glazing. It’s worth a mention that although the drop glass is tough like the windscreen, on the very edge it’s extremely fragile to say the least. If you clip it with a wrist watch or your key ring at it gets even the tiniest of chips on the very edge the window is f@@ked. It will split. A replacement is usually very expensive. It’s almost like 2 sheets of greenhouse glass laminated.
Still got a mk1 fabia tdi 250k miles two weeks ago 600 miles to family in Scotland 73.1 mpg engine clutch exhaust and pipework all original my daily commute 52-63mpg always better in summer
I wish I could drag myself out of the cycle of replacing new cars every 3-5 years and just buy something old. The biggest attraction to me is something that already has a few scuffs and scrapes so I don’t care adding any more.
Bravo GBC, a winning format with EV Carnage, that one kept me chuckling. On a downside, the best looking and most suitable poseurs’ cat, the Alfa Brera is also the worst car there, it was slow as hell, handled like a wheelbarrow of spuds, rode like a Model T and cost a fortune to maintain. I’d still have one though because most people don’t know that.
2010 Audi A6 Avant Se, 135k, 2.0tdi auto, full history, belts done, gearbox serviced, all wheel bearings, abd 4 x winter tyres, I got it for £800 as had a engine noise, replaced the alternator pully, all good, great car, super comfy and quiet, absolute vargin and better than any modern PSA crap
If you want fuel efficient car with comfort and visibility for the driver - cheapest - get a Freelander 2.2. Go anywhere. Get people in and out easy. Get dogs in and out easy. Get luggage in and out easy. Get shopping in and out easy. You can work on it yourself. You can modify it cheaply. Bigger air filter. Flood use by adding snorkel. Add a winch get you out of trouble. Add a tow bar take your boat or horse or sheep anywhere. Add hunting lights. Roof rails ..... whatever you need to survive the weekend.
Hey Geoff!! ... a version of this video about good cheap cars in the United States would be awesome... Can't find a decent X5 here for less than about 6-8K, for instance. Keep doin it mate! Thank you.
I’ve ended up somehow with six cars but my favourite is my £750 E36 BMW that I bought 10 years back. In that time it’s cost me nothing to run apart from a yearly service that costs me less than £40 and tyres. I also have a lovely rust free mk3.5 Golf 2.0 that cost me £250 and had that one 5 years and it’s bulletproof and got it cheap because of needing a £12 crank sensor. The 90’s is where it’s at, if you want reliability.
29:53 If a BMW makes that buzzing sound, check the very base of the spare wheel well has not filled up with water (often leaked from a sunroof or roof rails), as there are ~£2K of electronics sitting there in a polystyrene tray. If some of these short out, the air-suspension compressor can run constantly and even jack the car to the max, giving zero suspension travel and a harsh ride. If lucky, these electronics can be dried out with a hair dryer.
They used to have those basic white Dacias running around Gatwick about 5y ago. 1st and 2nd got ragged and that was about it due to the speed limits haha Flaccid.
2 litre HDI Berlingo with the roof with the small plates of glass, and the air con fan in the roof for the 3 rear passenger's which were our 3 kids. Yorkshire to Lake Garda with a trailer and the kids 3 bikes sat on roof bars on top of the trailer. Went through Luxembourg, filled the Berlingo and 4 jerry cans with diesel and did the same on the way back. Never missed a beat that engine, and the rear under floor storage held lots of cigars for the father in law 😉 The roof was called the multispace roof 😊
That was great entertainment...... Please do another double act! I actually replayed 2 bits. The Vaping ( I might just show my 3rd child this both he and his GF vape......) And the Vegan motorist! Brilliant 😂
Positively flaccid here, Geoff. Also, I've got an E46 that's made that buzzing behind the dash when the car is turned off ever since I bought it almost 10 years and over 100K miles later with no issues seen as a result of the buzz.

Not to be pedant.
Thanks 😊
That is something I will bear in mind, thankyou Mr Smith.
I bought my missus a Lexus is300h 2.5 and it is brilliant, 900 miles on a tank full!
Love the geekiness!
@@GeoffBuysCars Thank you! There's infinity more where that came from, been programming since I was six, Amstrad CPC 464!
Ha😂
Seriously though as an Aussie I'm jealous of some of the engine options you guys got that we didn't over here, agree totally on the Vauxhaul thing, however you need to remember the Monaro was a Holden, GM killed the brand by turning the commodore into a Vauxhaul insignia that nobody bought, to tank sales.
Gents this was absolutely fantastic fun hope you can do more things together
I really enjoyed that geoff, thanks very much
Ah! A re-incarnation of proper Top Gear, Geoff, Tony and Mr. Macmaster, that will work! Excellent video again!
Falcid 😂 Geoff with Tony is like Bob with mortimer. Love it 😂😂😂🫡
Comedy duo. I had such fun listening to you two. Put a smile on my face when I needed it. Ta.
There you go Tony, I've just subscribed to EV Car-Nage and will watch you next !
Ditto
My Mum had a Renault 5 Monaco, full leather top spec car, she had it 17 years and did a whopping 30,000 miles! 😂
Great video only think i will say wrong about the xf. The x type was a Mondeo underneath the xf wasn't
Just a note on the Jag XF, because im a Jag fan/anorak, the X-Type is the one based on the mondeo. The XF is based on a Lincoln LS
Flacid
Citroen C1 with aircon and a rev counter would do me for 2K!
Your right the front door glasses are laminated , not double glazed which has air space between the two layers,,,,
When a guy recommends to buy a used AlfaRomeo, you know you have to run away.
Does anyone know if there are issues with the Dual Mass Flywheel with that Mondeo?
Still got a mk1 fabia tdi 250k miles two weeks ago 600 miles to family in Scotland 73.1 mpg engine clutch exhaust and pipework all original my daily commute 52-63mpg always better in summer
I just bought a 73 land rover... it took me ages to get it uptogether and it drives like an old tractor ❤
Since the EV'S came out I have shown a greater interest in older cars. I love this video. ❤
I like really old cars but anything with plastic bumpers and an ECU are just designed to end up in the scrap yard before there time
For those of us that want comfort and fuel economy, I wish there was a sensible version of this!
I have a v6 with a much improved than the 2.5 sitting in my garden for years in that particular purple/blue colour
Hey Geoff!! ... a version of this video about good cheap cars in the United States would be awesome... Can't find a decent X5 here for less than about 6-8K, for instance.
Keep doin it mate! Thank you.
My 2k MX5….. best thing ever for smiles per miles. Great vid guys 👍
Air suspension has been deleted on this one 👍
They used to have those basic white Dacias running around Gatwick about 5y ago. 1st and 2nd got ragged and that was about it due to the speed limits haha
Flaccid.
Never missed a beat that engine, and the rear under floor storage held lots of cigars for the father in law 😉
The roof was called the multispace roof 😊
I've got the 2003 Golf tdi in black ! Excellent motor. Decent speed. Never much of a problem. Good mpg. Not ULEZ compliant.
Just Brilliant. Laughed so much (in a good way). Many thanks for this.
In which website was the CLS advert?
Interesting vauxhall the 2.8 turbo ...vectra was it ?
I know they were prone to rust quite quickly .but i loved my triumph acclaim. 8:54
I have a 1.9tdi pd Audi A4 still going strong done 260k and still will do 60mpg plus on a motorway
is my 204 vauxhall meriva worth about 400 now worth more as i recently found out its ulez compliant
That was great entertainment...... Please do another double act! I actually replayed 2 bits.
The Vaping ( I might just show my 3rd child this both he and his GF vape......)
And the Vegan motorist!
Brilliant 😂
A £2k car with a £1500 repair bill > £20k+ PCP/CS/HP.
Very Thought provoking and useful. Very Entertaining too. Great Video. Thanks Both.
"Flacid" (nice word - rolls off the tongue) 😊
Interesting - seeing all those cars and their details
👍 Geoff
Do the Toerags really get through front tyres every 10 miles?
Positively flaccid here, Geoff.
Also, I've got an E46 that's made that buzzing behind the dash when the car is turned off ever since I bought it almost 10 years and over 100K miles later with no issues seen as a result of the buzz.
Very entertaining 45 mins, I now have a flacid mirkin, thanks gentlemen :) (subscribed to both)
top tip for removing bad smells from cars.. cut an onion in half and place each half under the front seats.
My favourite is MBW out of all those car but love the Vauxhall Cabreolay Yellow
Gold! What a great chat..😂 Flacid... love to banter.
Merkin😂
My 1998 Vauxhall Omega 3.0 V6 manual was a great car, and fast too ...
Great video, very flacid! Out of those I'd take the Mondeo. But I've actually got a 2010 golf blue motion estate. Bought recently for 2200
