As an 850R owner, I'm more excited about seeing this kinda video over an exotic 😅
Same here. I had a Platinum identical to this and also loved seeing the video on the Chrysler Conquest TSi because I have owned 13 of them through the years.
MEEEE TOOOOOO
Same here!!! Volvo for life!!
@@schigara damm thats more of those than I have seen in my whole life, and I think they are not rare
Loved my 1994 855T. It booted! I downgraded to the 964 with the 6 cylinder version but RWD. Happy with it too. A C70 Cab will be on my hunt list next.
This is my car. Thanks for doing the video car wizard. Car definitely is a daily driver and a little rough. The 850 is such a great car. Volvo really put a lot into that car. You didn't mention Volvo raced the wagon in the BTCC in 94.
You should get a T-5R to go with it!!
Nice! Do you have social media? We have a group with around 15 platinum owners.
The BTCC made the car.
Nice car man. I love my 95 854 turbo
hello. i commented this up higher but im glad i found you. if your car is rust free, and your willing to part ways with it i would give u 7500 in current state. if ever interested comment back to get the ball rolling. i can also give you my email, in case down the line u feel like parting ways.
Bug Ninja is clearly a very knowledgeable man, this was an excellent episode!
My Volvo turned 212,000 miles last night (I'm a rideshare driver). No leaks, doesn't skip a beat, and the AWD enabled me to stay out during snowpocalypse. I added nearly 1000 miles over 5 days on ice covered roads getting people where they needed to go safely and comfortably. Everyone asked me what my "Total beast of a car with heated REAR seats" was. I proudly answered "A 2012 Volvo XC60, the best car I've ever owned!" Sidenote: If a mechanic doesn't know much about a certain car, it's probably pretty good.
Dang low miles! Keep it up 👍🏻
@@805NAVE
Low miles? No, it's actually HIGH miles for a 10 year old car. Averaging 20,000 a year is way over the average of 12,000 a year.
A few other facts, that was once the fastest wagon ever made (the R version). Probably the best car available for DIY people.
You're the man, Robert!!! You helped me in a lot of restoring my 94' 850!!!!
My next project is another rare Volvo, a Volvo V70R
I thought he was gonna bring you out
Robert is like the Volvo version of car ninja
Good to see you here Robert. You have helped so many Volvo owners.
bug ninja’s voice is legendary
A real life Cleveland Brown
@@chrishernandez2490 Like Billy Dee Williams, Bug Ninja's like the cool side of the pillow.
I want him to read me my bedtime story.
Could probably do a decent Barry White.
Yeah, he should become the narrator of the show.
The SIPS system saved my friends life when a guy ran a red light and T-boned my friends 850 GLT.
I walked away from a @50mph T-bone that totaled my 1985 Volvo 740GLE. A woman sped up to run a red light and hit my driver's side. I was driving and of course belted in. I climbed out the passenger side post impact my understanding is the woman that hit me was knocked unconscious. She was driving a Ford Tempo and had no insurance or driver's license.
I love my 850 wagon to death. They don't make them like this anymore, what a gem. Hold onto them if you find them!
I like when this guy is part of the show he definitely was a good salesman with that voice
Adrian sold us our 2016 V60!!!

@@antny109 he has it, car wizard told once. I am a subscriber but no videos :(
Adrian is one of the most professional people I've heard on RUclips👍👍
I’d buy a car from him, I love his style of speaking. Good expert Wizard!
@@joelladefoged3892
Why are you so impressed at his style of speaking? Let me guess.......🤔🤔
We rolled one of those in high school. Doing about 60mph and it rolled about 6 times. 6 of us in the car too. We all lived.
What did you roll it for
Fun fact: The high tail lights were designed for safety, it set the break lights high enough to be seen by truck drivers.
On newer versions the lights change from higher level to lower level when the bootlid is open when driven.
@Chackers Ever drive a conventional highway tractor? The view over the hood, is forward, not down. (in traffic)
@Chackers When they leave more than a car length space, out front. What happens? Idiot drivers, zoom in there. The good drivers, know to leave that space clear.
I think the Fiat Punto from 1993, same year as the 850 estate brought out the high level rear light clusters too.
@@Scealmora Toyota Corolla Alltrac (or kombi 4wd depending on where you are from) from 1988 was the first I think with the tailights going to the roofline.
I had a V70 as taxi,it made 490000 km in 3,5 year.Only regular service with original spare parts and quality oil.Same engine and gearbox.
You know how good Car Wizard is? He's out here comparing cars by smells.
Smells like crayons
Remember, the Wizard does taste vehicle fluids.
@Sound Sleep I’ve smelled cars for years (no pun intended) and I can tell you the best smelling car interiors are 1990’s Toyota’s & early 2000’s ones. They have this mix between coconut & clay smell that’s really nice. Absolutely delicious. But the best part about that is that Toyota smell lasts a LONG time. I’ve gone to the junkyard and 30 year old Toyota Pickups with 300,000 miles STILL have that nice smell, if they haven’t been smoked in. But BY FAR the BEST smelling car I’ve ridden in is my uncle’s low mileage 2005 Matrix base. It has that smell but with a little bit of flavour, best I can describe is somebody mixed oxyclean with coconut flavour vape juice. Apparently that was what 9th gen Corollas and 1st Gen Matrixes new smell was back in the day. I know this is a goofy & absurd topic but just saying from experience.
Always wanted an 850 T5. Massive boot. They raced them in the BTCC. The glove box holders are for when you’re parked.
I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. My parents and I used to joke about how we needed to invent headlight washers and wipers, because the roads there were pretty sloppy in the winter. This would have been our dream car just for those wipers.
Well... They were also known for beign notoriously unreliable (the wipers).
@14:25, The turbo is leaking and will need to be replaced soon. Oil is coming out of the intercooler weep hole and building up at the charge pipe tube.
Every turbo leaks, and that is so small leak, so there's no reason to change to turbo.
Thats not a problem ive driven mine that way for the last 7 years, just check, and fill a little bit of oil 3-4times a year, pretty much every old t5 volvo has oil in the boosted pipe side, more or less
Robert is a Volvo expert and so is my dad. With that much oil they will both say the turbo is trashed
Robert dropping facts!
Hey Robert! You saved my *ss more than once with all my volvos! Thank you!
People like Adrian are a dying breed in the motor industry.
Thank you, sir
I've got an 06 V70R. The first thing that people notice when they get in is how comfy the seats are, both front and rear! So nice when doing long road trips
9:20 I’ve had my 850 turbo for 5 years and never even noticed those “cup holders” existed in the glovebox until now 😅
i drive a 1997 Volvo V70 turbo diesel with a manual transmisson. it has lasted over 250 thosuand miles. also holds up to road salt very well. 24 years and no rust out.
@19:45 There is a spare tire under the carpet, along with a Volvo supplied tool kit, jack and some space.
I used it once. My father had an 06 V70. One tire got punctured by a loose pole plate at a parking lot. I had no problems replacing it. He was surprised that the spare tire was under the carpet.
knew I'd see you in the comments here
The spare tire area is also intentionally designed to be able to fit the full size tire.
@@looncraz I love the peace of mind having a full size spare in my 850. No risk of having to wait around at a tire shop far from home
@@mattj456 Yep, that was one of the first things I did with my 850... and again with my S80. My 2019 XC90 T8, however, didn't have a spare at all due to having the third row, so I bought one from eBay. There's no place to keep even the donut spare, so I just bungee cord it... car is used as a work horse, but I'm still trying to find alternative mounting means.
I had a few. Both sedans. One turbo and one R. Very good cars. You can also flip the hood hinges to stand the hood vertical.
Had a 1990 960, one of if not my favorite car I've owned. I loved that thing. One feature I loved that is never talked about is the internal door handles. The lever that slides back is so unique.
And that nice, wide, flat armrest on the door, both middle and on top. Perfect ergonomics!

His wife is also a big part of it and she is a full-time teacher.
@@TSL73 exactly!
@17:31, It does have an anti-sway bar in the rear. All of the platinum wagons, the R's and T5 turbo cars have them.
Also its not solid axle, it's kinda independent suspension with steering. amazing to drive
It's called Delta-link semi-independent rear suspension
I was gonna say, the camera honed right in on it haha
I have one on the 2.0 20v, seen it when they did the steering, just that it is atypical
I belive all 850s have them, all fwd models use the same delta-link rear end
This guy knows his stuff. Very knowledgeable and well spoken.
Bug Ninja really does have a pretty good wealth of knowledge. Also, that voice. That's a great voice for videos or radio.
150 000 miles is nothing on a big Volvo. I have driven many 400 000 miles Volvos.
It is kind of funny to me as a swede to see a Volvo 850 being considered exotic. Knep up the good work!
Maybe the miles aren't a big deal, but it's the years that kill it. Replacing engine and suspension bushing on these cars, especially with the passive rear steering, is a nightmare.
You guys missed one of the coolest things when looking in the rear! This car is equipped with Delta-Link rear suspension, a very cool system that because of its structure, allowed the car to flex side-to-side during turning, decreasing the size of the turning circle. The FWD cars actually turn tighter than the AWD models that have a rear subframe 😎
Always happy to see the Bug Ninja stopping by the wizards shop. Thanks for all of the info on the Volvo!
I’ve only bought one 850 in my 21 years of Volvo’s , when the speedometer gear breaks most cheap Volvo people don’t replace . So you have to hope the mileage is accurate . This is a nice example of the platinum.
once took my 245 to Harbor Freight to pick up one of their larger tool boxes, after my friend and i loaded it, one of the employees shook my hand in amazement
@11:35, There is a trigger in the side of the seat just forward of the power seat memory switches that deploys the SIPS seat air bag.
I knew you'd be in the comments on this one. Lol.
@@nknasi right ??? Hahaha
Exactly! Swedish police had problems that it deployed when they started using this model, the space on the side of the seat was perfect for the flashlight but it was to snug fit so when they slamed the Door shut it deployed the sips😂
Exactly, it's a little trigger, there is no side sensors for the SIPS bag until 1999, the 850's and 98 V70/S70 has a trigger with almost a gunpowder/acid charge in it, once the door contacts the trigger it blows. I've seen this is person, kick it, hit it with a hammer, drop the seat on the trigger...bag blows out.
@@harnettsgarage exactly! I was working with stripping cars at a scrapyard and we had to deploy all airbags before the remains went into the press to be a cube
I love old SAABs and Volvos! Great stuff!!
I really dig that instrumentation layout.
Hi Wizard! Loved the video on the old Volvo wagon. Your guest knows ALOT about them, and that was cool to see. Another COOL FACT: Volvo invented and patented the 3 point safety harness seat belt. They then GAVE AWAY the rights to use these for free to all auto manufacturers since they were so concerned about safety!
Wonderful
Glad to see the Bug Ninja again!
My mom had an 850R when I was a kid, awesome wagon.

I had the UK version , The 850 T5, a 250 bhp beast, was so much fun, a real understated car that surprised so many BMW's in a drag race 😁
Talk about a win win, a free quality assured oil change, and the wizard shows the world your car.
That's gorgeous - never seen one that colour before. Great having Adrian come on again to talk about it; the safety feature bit was amazing. Those things had features many cars STILL don't have today and that was 25 years ago. Very neat car.
Underrated feature: Having the seats fold flat make for way comfortable sleep when car camping. Always thought pearl is a classy color.
i sleep in my volvo like a king, i tried it when i traveled to germany. Seriously, the commfot of this car never ends and u love it more and more
It's always a good video when Adrian is featured.
A manual 850R would be the wagon to get. They ran the 850 wagon in touring car racing to make a statement and it had better aero.
The 240 turbo wagon is still my favorite.
no, the automatic is the best. you cant win from it manually. Put it in S position and you will loose always.
@@klaasj7808 You're joking right, you think a 4 speed old school torque converter transmission is quicker than a 5 speed manual?
@@wetlettuce4768 try it, put in S position hit that throttle. you wont win with your foot and hand against that. no way
@@klaasj7808 I've owned an 850 T5 automatic and that transmission is not winning you any races.
@@wetlettuce4768 it has nothing to do with winning races. you wont either with manual. as you want it to be pleasant. you wont win from automatic with manual and you and the passengers still enjoy the ride. there is a difference between road manual and on circuit.
In 1996, a "Platinum" edition of the 850 Turbo was available. The exterior paint for these models came in a metallic pearl platinum-colour and had special 16 inch alloy wheels. The interior was fitted with leather seats and burled walnut accents. Only 1,500 of these were imported for the U.S. market
I have one! (:
I am a huge Volvo fan and the 850 is iconic! My friend has a 95 850R which gets so many positive comments and pictures taken whenever it is out. This is a superb example and not surprised that many people want to buy it. I didn’t know what that raised metal area was for - it’s on my V70 P2 and also had it on my V50 but it was great to find out why! Good to see Adrian again. Superb video Wizard
Volvos, especially the wagon version are just simply beautiful, the design are just perfectly spot on, and the safety? I still remember when I was a kid my dad told me a whole lot of time how Volvo cars are the safest in the world
I had a 1996 platium edition. For my first car! It had 450,000kms before it blow up:( it was my favorite car.
One day a Ferrari video, next day a Volvo video. Both very interesting to watch. Variety Is the key.
Please Wizard get Bug Ninja out there as much as possible, the combined knowledge of you both makes for a great segment!
My fiance still has her purchased new, 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo sedan. 28 years and 282,243 miles later and still going strong. Pearl white, trunk lid spoiler, headlight wiper blades, sunroof, yes ---- loaded with all the bells and whistles. October 2023, we took it on a two week road trip to the Grand Canyon. 3,200 plus miles. It performed flawless! This car has been worthy of every single mile it's given her family and us!

Adrian is the good kind of a salesman, the one that knows the technical aspects
He doesn't.
I own a Swedish book about the development of the Volvo 850, although it was first released in 1991, the development of it started in 1978, which was a bit of a shock to me. It was the biggest step of evolution of any Volvo car, the five cylinder engine, going from rear wheel drive to front wheel, and the massive rear lights. It also had some new patented suspension I remember.
They were called "flying bricks" for a reason.
Adrian is a welcome addition and very a articulate bloke!
its kinda interesting that when i was a kid, i saw those boxy volvo's as ugly oddballs, but now as an adult, i'v gradually earned more and more respect for volvo cars.
Ever seen a perfect Gremlin? I was blown away by one in the smiths parking lot.
Me too. I thought Volvos were ugly (although I still think the 240s 740s and 760s and anything older are ugly) as hell until I bought my 850 turbo when I was 16. I fucking loved that car and I still have it. 850 sedan was actually kinda sexy
I get amazed when i find more safety features on this amazing cars! Well explained he knows everything about cars
I work for Enterprise from 97-98. The Volvo V70 was one of my favorites to drive and I do remember that smell. Good times
Back in October I got a 2015 V60 Platinum, finally a car I smile every time I get to drive.
I had a signed limited edition 740, those were great cars. Near perfection; great steering, acceleration, easy and cheap to fix.
13:49 - Can confirm that feature works as intended in the 850.
Was hit directly in the side by a another car at an estimated speed of 70 km/t in my old 850 T5.
I walked away with a sore body and few cuts on my hand from the window glass.
I can see how Adrian is a good salesman. Knowledgeable, direct and calming.
Wow, UK viewer here Mr Wizard, I have the 1999 V70 classic TDI 5 cylinder manual gearbox . It's done 230,000 miles and still running great.
The 1995 850 T-5R should have gotten a mention. Upgraded wheels and 240 hp. A buddy of mine had one from new. It was a lot of fun to drive.
I'm older than Bug Ninja, but I swear it was his voice in the back of my head that kept me from doing stupid things as a kid.

I really love how Wizard progressed over time with his videos! I really wish he spent more on production, this content has lots of potential.
Dang Bug Ninja & Car Wizard dressing up like twin brothers, greys & jeans & bald
I used to work on three of these here in Canada, two were Sedans...the other was a wagon, the owner of the wagon just decided not to maintain it anymore and drove it into the ground. It was too bad, I loved the pearl colour. I had three 850's, they were great.
You're right. We wanted to see this. I'm an old school GM guy and enjoyed the hell out of this vid. Thanks for sharing.
Adrian is so genuine in his love of these cars!
I had all generations of the V70 (starting with the 850) and now on the latest V60 T5 Polestar. Loved them all.
Love the channel Car Wizard! This vid makes me miss my 850, I had the 2.3 T5 estate in red, 1996 model here in the UK. I’ve never seen a used car with so much service history. Got it at 159000 miles, 1 previous owner. All Volvo dealer history, oil change every 5K. I continued to do oil changes every 5K and sold it to the next owner with nearly 260000miles on the clock. Cracking car, very comfortable and fast for it’s time.
We had (and I had one of them) 2.5l I5 10 and 20 valve - latter came with turbo as well.
And the 850 came as R - used in BTCC.
Amazing shape at 26 years old! Seem to remember they were called T5 from the outset here in the UK
As an auto enthusiast and collector I must say the 850 Wagons specifically the R is one of the coolest sport cars ever made. Also there was a lot of really cool engineering facts that were not shared in this video, one being that this car was co-developed with Porsche.
Very cool that Adrian's willing to share his knowledge of Volvos with us plebs. Thank you sir!
My brother worked in a Volvo dealership when these were new and I got to see a lot of these new and check them out. Black Magnesium wheels great for motorways not Irish roads. Popular with police forces in Europe as they were very quick
Robert DIY would be geeking out over this thing! Glad you took the viewer up on his offer to film this one.
One thing you forgot to mention, as my 1997 wagon has one, under that second lift up in the trunk, there was an option for a third row seat, facing backwards! My kids used to love sitting back there. You have to be under 5' to fit, though. A nice throwback to wagons of the 60s and 70s.
Owned a platinum sedan for years and absolutely loved it

Ah the memories. I bought the T5 in 1997 and we drove it for 10 years. The car refused to break down. Still miss it to this day. (even though I wanted the R, but they were in short supply)
My mom owned a V70 diesel wagon (the model right after the 850). It went almost over 600.000km. It was a very nice car, she regularly mentions how she misses it.
When the engine failed, the interior was almost pristine.
Oh man, so cool that Volvo is, and so cool it is to enjoy Adrian's big Volvo-brain. Good to see (and hear) you back man!!
This is cool! I actually enjoyed watching this more than the exotics. I have an 07 XC70, I love it. Adrian was spot-on when he mentioned the space, that's one of my favorite things about the wagon. I think the rear styling is cool with the full height tail lights and near-vertical rear window, but the best part is all the interior space that that allows. Mine has 224K on it, it needs a few things, but overall it runs terrific, and the all-wheel-drive is amazing in the snow. Unless there is a foot of snow on the ground, I'll say that it's better than my Toyota 4Runner in bad weather.
I love you for this video, and the fact that Robert DIY came here is a big thing ❤️ you pointed out exactly the honest points of this cars. They are just a great package!
Adrian is just the best. His voice is so soothing I'd listen to an ASMR track narrated by him.
God I love these cars, had a '00 V70 SE Cross Country as my first car. Amazing little thing.
I have an 850 Platinum Limited Edition, unfortunately it’s a sedan. Fun Fact: Platinum Wagons are more rare at 400-500 produced, the Platinum Sedans were 1000-1100 produced, they are a North American Car exclusive.
I had a Platinum Edition. A fun driver. Reliable enough except for the leak in the AC evaporator. A common problem for the 850 apparently that Volvo wouldn't admit to and never issued a recall. Expensive to repair since the dash had to come apart.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode (as a Volvo owner myself). Thanks Adrian and Mr. and Mrs. Wizard!
If you want to know anything about the 850, Robert DIY is the goto guy. He has a million very instructive videos, and I'm quite sure he's the reason, a lot of those wonderful cars are still running.
