So I’m from Canada and I’m 19 years old on Jan 30.
When I was a kid, a neighbour from the UK had these old Top Gear episodes on VHS. When it was time to move on, he gave them to me since he knew how much I loved cars. I was hooked on all of these episodes and would memorize all of Clarkson’s monologues. I looked up to Clarkson as a bit of a role model, and it’s the reason I know so much about cars today.
I ended up writing a letter to Clarkson, Hammond and May sometime about 10 years ago just thanking them for instilling such a fiery passion for cars. However, I was only 7 or 8 at the time and was too shy to mail the letter.
Good times. Hope all is well for Clarkson these days.

I have to disagree with him on the styling. I think for being over 30 years old, it has aged really well. Clean, simple and funtional, with an air of understated quality and solidity. The exact opposite of modern cars with all their flashing LEDS, fake exhausts, scoops and vents, chock full of poinless tech that will no doubt fail very expensively.
These old Volvos are legendary for the milages they can achieve when looked after. 500k is not unusual for them!

We had a burgundy 240 GLT with tan leather interior. Fully specced - alloy wheels, electric windows/sunroof, carpeted (!), overdrive gearbox, Blaupunkt stereo. The works! It sounded absolutely incredible, such a growling engine. But, it was a VOLVO, it looked like a Lego car, and I was about 7 years old (so had posters of Testarossas and 959s on my wall). I was so embarrassed riding around in that car, despite it being so comfortable and solid. I'd absolutely love to have it back and cruise around in it these days. Ironically it might be my favourite Volvo of all time now.

The first 'nice' Volvo, and later there was an estate. I thought it had come out around '90, but it was '92, apparently. I had driven the 145 ps version, it lacked a bit of power, a 170 or 200 (Pferde Stärke) version would have been better, this 2.5 turbo would have been great. Now own S60 T5.

My first car was a 1971 J registration Volvo 144. It had 256000 miles on it when I bought it for £100 in 1986 and I had it for a further two years before it was written off whilst parked by a drunk driver crashing into it. In two years ownership nothing went wrong with it. RIP Herman

These cars were light, yet strong. Excellent steering weight. Fantastic brakes. These drove great.

I absolutely prefer the way the 3-series drives over the way the 850 drives. The 850 is just a baby 440 (which is a perfectly okay car, but nothing special). The 34x is actually fun to drive, especially with a manual. The 740 I think is still one of the best driving cars ever made. Honestly, when Volvo went FWD, they lost me (although I did a very happy 125.000 miles in my cheap 440)

i own the same Volvo 850 Bj 92. with 2.5L GLT in Blue. Its got 150.000km now and i bought it nearly 10 years ago. I love this car, nearly no problems. Its drives rly good and i made a lot of good mamories with it. I even crashed into a old Benz once and i only had to buy a new hood and new headlights. The other car was totaled ... 😅 happends ig. Dang i love this block.

All Volvos are properly made ie zinc coated pre paint and rarely rust, plus quality with great styling and look business like as opposed to the crap of most manufacturers, respect to All things Volvo ! trucks, diggers and cars, not keen on the xc90 styling though !!

Very witty! Especially the local primary school design team. Can you imagine Giugario going to Volvo for a job? Looking back on the 850, I still would NOT want one. This clip is probably its best memorial. Sayonara.

Maybe I'm a bit partial as a Swede. But I did not like the design of 740, 850 very much when they came out. But Now I actually do 30 years later... really weird... It seems timeless..

£22k for a family saloon 31 years ago, my 2001 B5.5 Passat estate was £12,500 out the showroom with no discounts!
On the coat-tails of the excesses of the 80s but who in their right mind would buy such a leviathan for that price!

there was an estate and a 3 hot ones 850 r(2.3 turbo 5 cyl) 850 t-5 (2.5 turbo 5 cyl) and a rare version 850 t-5r.. but i guess that these had not been release at the time of the film.. the estate was i think released in 1994 and the hot ones where r(1994/5 t-5 (1995/6 and i think the t5-r was 1996 only.

      Just to clarify:
      The 850 T5, T5R and 850R were all 2.3, 2.4's and 2.5's weren't introduced until the V70.

The 850 was a medium to large saloon of its day. Look how JC towers above it, and how small this vehicle is compared to the balloons called SUVs are today, with often less interior space and certainly poorer visibility anywhere but in front. Width especially 1760mm for the 850, A Nissan Juke is 50mm wider.
