Besides being made of bamboo i'm pretty sure the handle part of Hyoga's spear that he holds with his front hand is slightly loose and can slide up and down which allows the bigger circular radius when he thrusts.

Actually just one chapter has come out in the byakuya reboot so I don't know whether it'll be spoiler filled or not. Maybe they did that reboot just because the plot in it will be relevant later. But the first chapter continues in detail from what happens after Byakuya and gang discover that everyone has been turned to stone.
