I have the ID.4 GTX. Same annoying things and some more.
Pretty strange that Volkswagen creates annoying software instead of a smart one.
They could have had a look at BMW, Tesla, etc.
But no, they prefered to let the engineers create a very special user interface where I think nobody can be really get happy with.
    But the car is great.
So Volkswagen: Why? Do you need help?

I hope that VW fixes these annoying issues because the ID.3 has a lot of positive aspects: quiet comfortable ride and stable at speed. Compact external dimensions yet spacious interior. Overall it is a practical hatchback. ☮️

I had the exact same issue too - offside rear brake got really hot on both legs of a return journey of about 80 miles each way - it smelt of burning and the wheel got very warm to touch. Recovered to a dealer the next day, and after 2 days they could find no issue. Been running another month or so with no reoccurrence 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't understand why so many settings in so many cars aren't "sticky". Asian cars seem to be the worst in that regard, but the Germans aren't great either. As for different users, Mercedes has different profiles as well, but the screen to select which one goes away after a few seconds at least. But even there they've missed a few tricks: Climate and mirror/seat settings aren't coupled to the user, and the profiles aren't coupled to the different keys. If it's my key starting the car, then the damn thing should be able to figure out that I'm going to want my profile and not my wife's!

The things i dislike the most are:
    - The navigation system. I don't like the UI, the EV specific things aren't integrated at all and the charging stations are not more than POIs in other systems.
    - The fact, that i don't has preconditioning before fastcharging.
    - Also the not illuminated buttons.
    - The few features of the app (at least it is reliable now most of the time).
    - The glossy plastic around the displays.
    - The fact, that you are waiting way too long for updates.

I'm in the UK (Cornwall - very popular with German tourists!) I got fed up with waiting for the ID.3 to come out as my Bluemotion Polo had reached 150,000 miles and needed replacing. So I bought an eGolf. Wonderful decision. It lacks all the annoying features that Chris doesn't like because it's a more simple car. It has adaptive cruise control which is absolutely wonderful - I use it all the time. I don't mind clicking twice to get to B mode - why would anyone want anything else? It has no lane assist I'm pleased to say, having driven hire cars with this feature, not good on our narrow country roads. I've only charged it at home using a standard wall outlet in my garage, overnight once a week suits me well. I don't care that it only tells me the added range - I have a smart electricity meter that tells me how many KwH it's taken.
Oh, and the Mk 8 Golf (which is what this is) is a sublime car to drive. Friends who have bought ID.3 tell me they'd prefer to have a eGolf (but of course they stopped making them). Now the indicator really is that the second-hand price of an eGolf is really high, not that I am planning to sell it. I've had it 3 years now and the ONLY thing it's had are new front tyres (downside of electric front wheel drive is wheelspin if you're not careful) and its annual inspection .NOTHING ELSE. Amazing!

The ignition off when you go out of the car is most annoying when you left people in the car. For instance, all your family in the car, you stop to buy bread in the supermarket, you go out and air conditioner (we are in Greece, this is important) and kids music (streamed from my wife's phone, not mine!) is off. Yes, you can turn on back with the on/off button but what the heck??? Why they did not make a delay at least for 30 seconds (variable is a rocket science for VW i suppose)?

for me Vw has kind of lost the plot and its hurting sales globally, with the Id issues such as having no proper driver screen , a 30 year throw back where only front windows switches , terrible design for RHD (using a typical french method with next to no glove box), only available with a dark interior, its that reason alone I still like the golf over the id, none of these features have been fixed the seat borne. and more importantly even though it is hated my many vw are still replicating the same infotainment setup on all id brands, energy usage is still super high at motorway or short journeys, things finally slightly improved but why can't the scheduled departure time precondition the battery why its still not plugged in is beyond me
finally battery tech and life isn't as good as other brands, we still don't have a vw answer for a GTI equivalent, its self a really easy fix, the pack volatage is lower and limited to sub 130kwh this may have been ok 4 years ago but now both tesla and multiple korean brands have cracked rapid charging to a point were petrol heads can be happy,
final bug bear range, vw quote a full charge but when you get it they tell you to only charge to 80%, this takes a plus 200 mile real well range bellow the acceptable level especially if your an autobann or motorway muncher.

Thanks for sharing Chris, they tend too overthink what customers want. However they should have taken more from the BMW i3 or even Tesla. But I think they are flawed with the 'not invented here' syndrom. Sometimes it's way better to copy ideas from other manufacturers then trying it yourself but in a less positive way. I think the UI is still worse than an 2013 i3. That's 9 years ago...

  • @johnmckay1423
    @johnmckay1423 Год назад

Agree with everything in your list. But my biggest issues are not anything to do with the EV side of it. Did no one think to sit in a mock-up before they signed off the design? The windscreen pillars seem designed especially to block the view at roundabouts and junctions. Lethal. And why are the reading lights (near the rear view mirror) lit up at night. They're distracting because they're too bright. And the light bar across the dashboard that reflects in the side mirrors just where the wing mirrors are so it looks like there are lights in the mirrors all the time.
I also find managing charging overly complicated. I want to charge during the cheap period, but it seems all I can do is set a departure time. I want the charging time to finish at 5.30am. I want the car warm and defrosted at 8am. I don't seem to be able to achieve both. And changing the charge limit in the app doesn't seem to override the limit set in the car.
For context, this is my second EV (and I have complaints about that too). These are things that I think are basics.
I ordered this car because it was available within a month whereas it was over a year for my first choice - probably a Hyundai or Kia. I feel really ungrateful complaining about a brand new expensive (not in the scheme of EVs, but £36k is a lot of money) and it's more than adequate transport, but there are things that aren't down to price; they're just not good enough design.

The reasons I didn’t buy the id3 after test-driving it are the drum brakes (in the 21st century sand st this price point!) and the shitty plastic interior. I liked the drive, so I may get a Cupra instead.

You will still have drum brakes in the cupra. It's standard on the MEB platform

@@francisreed452 At least it doesn't look so bad inside, I must confess I intend to spend more time sitting in front than checking the rear wheels.

Not for me. Too sporty of a ride. Not my style of steering.
