I've had my ID3 for two years, and I agree: it's a great car. It still has software bugs, it had some problems that had to be fixed at the dealer, it's not the top of the technology, not the fastest, not the longest range, nothing really fancy. But it's still a solid, simple, comfortable car. It's all that I need in a car.
I have the ID.4 1st Ed. and aside from the long delay in getting upgraded to 3.x (I live in the US), I’ve had no issues with the car. I am completely satisfied with my experience, 2 years and 2 months on. If I wasn’t as old as I am and trying to retire, I’d get in line for the BUZZ or ID.7!
I've had my Cupra Born (your ID3's Spanish more stylish cousin 😂) for 6 months (with s/w 3.1) - and the more I drive it, the more I really, really like it 😁. It's extremely smooth and comfortable to drive, and rock solid on the motorway. Everything I want from a practical "family" hatchback. And, now that the weather has gotten warmer, I'm getting 4-4.5 miles per kWh - so for me, range is not an issue. Yes, the software is not the greatest (understatement 😊), but for the most part, it works OK. Will VW ever get it working properly, I have my doubts ☹️ but maybe with their 2nd generation cars 😂. I've been following you from the start, continue enjoying Walter 😁.
I must admit, like yourself it has niggling issues with the software and I am lucky that there has been no catastrophic issues especially when it came to the 3.0 OTA. It took 2 attempts and worked perfectly unlike some unlucky owners where it bricked their vehicles. Driving mine is so effortless and I enjoy every mile ( I'm in the UK). Had mine Tour now since December 21 and love it.
I first had an ID.3 with version 1.0 as a company car but when I left, we bought an ID.3 ourselves (Makena Turkish, 1st edition). Yes, I had some software issues and would like some more range or faster charging but just as you said: it drives great! Some friends of mine have Model 3’s and my god, I hate that suspension! So far (knocks on wood) my ID.3 has never left me stranded (probably jinxed it now) and what’s also important: the issues I had (ghost rear reading light, SOS module failure etc) were all fixed under warranty. Even the first few checkups are free for ID-owners in the Netherlands! This week I called my dealer for the 3.2 update; it’s planned for october 9th, together with the high-voltage battery recall check and although that’s a long time (busy schedule, lack of qualified engineers), I don’t really mind. The car works, 2.4 works and for the navigation and such I always use CarPlay anyway. Each time I see my car, I love it and I enjoy driving it every time!
Love my ID4 so far. Yes there are other cars that have some Great stuff. Love Rivians, but too spendy, and doesn't have carplay. Overall build quality seems pretty solid. There isn't an EV out there without some kind of quirk or issue.
I really appreciate all the technical help and news you bring to the ID3 and other cars. I have had my ID3 "Idris" for just over a year and the software issues have mostly been niggles, ; wrong configuration settings when updated to 2.4, not connecting to the app for a few days, occasional display bugs. (Should have kept quiet... Idris has just stopped talking to the Internet:-( ) Personally I like the haptic buttons. I would love to be able go to my dealer and get upgrades (sound system, horn, sensors) As you say, driving is superb, quiet, comfortable and relaxing. Would love the app to have features that our renault Zoe has (total miles and charge history). The app add ons that come with 3.2 software sound awesome. Why not replace Walter with a face-lift ID3? Seems to be the ideal match for you....❤😊
I have also suffered from the offline issue from time to time, but 3.0 fixed that as it installed a new firmware on the communication module. This is a common problem on some older cars.
I do use a Hyundai Kona EV that the company provides me for work, and i still try to drive my own ID.4 as often as possible while working, for all the same pleasant reasons. OS is not great, but the car is!
EV drivers put up with a lot. The software is very glitchy in the cars and when we turn up to charge the car the flipping charger isn’t working. My goodness what a palaver and still the EV cars are grossly overpriced as well. Come on the U.K. Government get the charger infrastructure sorted and make the 14 or so private charging companies accountable if chargers remain out of commotion for any length of time.
I was really pleased to hear your comments! I’ve had my ID3 for almost 2 years and I feel privileged to have this car. We have to put things into perspective, I’ve been driving for 40 years, this car exceeds anything I could have dreamt of. People take technology for granted these days, make no mistake, this is leading edge technology and VW have done a better job than most of the other established automakers. Software has been fine, could be better but it hasn’t been an issue. The car is comfortable, spacious, quiet, smooth, economical and has superb features. Mine doesn’t have a name like Walter but I’d sure miss it if it was gone!
Makes me wish this car was available in US, although hatches don’t sell that well here. I love your take, Chris. Despite its good and not so good quirks, it still rates with you. Comparing it with 50 other cars, you know what you want and like, and we can’t fault you or the car if - after all you’ve been through - you still like Walter.
I would like to drive an ID.3, but VW does not sell it in USA. Still, I love my 35.8 kWh e-Golf and have -55,000 miles after 5 years - it puts a smile on my face every single time I drive it.
I sat in an ID3 this week, the first time since they were released so was expecting a poor interior from most reviews I have seen over the few years its been out. I was blown away, it felt very nice, was very comfortable. I have a Golf 7.5 at present and I am confident I will get on well with the ID3, it felt like the Golf. So much so that once used pricing drops to within budget I will buy one.
I'm also a 1st Edition driver and like you I love the car despite its faults. I haven't had any catastrophic problems with the software, just minor bugs, and I'm looking forward to hearing from my dealer with an appointment to update the car to 3.2 after which I'm hoping everything will work as it should. Software problems naturally irritate motoring journalists, but owner drivers work around them and find a way to use the car despite the bugs. In regular use it's the driving experience that defines your relationship with the car, not the software bugs. And the car drives brilliantly.
Love Pelly my ID.3 1st Pro Plus that was one of the first delivered in UK during pandemic. Yes, 12v battery problems but quickly fixed, failed door sensor again fixed quickly and a couple of updates that had to be done at dealer. No other problems. Still on 2.3 so happy to let others get issues with 3.0 and 3.2 resolved first as 2.3 works just fine. Drove from UK to South of France and it was perfect. Comfortable, pleasant driving with plenty of room for luggage and various friends + dogs on the way. Enough range and charging speed for someone who needs to stop every 150 miles to retain motorway sanity! And kudos to France for their charging networks......Ionity and Total Energie everywhere on autoroutes. Currently running on sunshine from solar panels .... very happy as fuel prices rose last year and the sun shone all summer.

I know what you mean. I test drove the ID3 and it was very nice. I also test drove the Volvo C40 and it was one of the most uncomfortable cars I've ever driven, and my own diesel Kia feels like a magic carpet compared to that. Both the seats and suspension are much softer. But I could happily drive the ID3. (and yes, I have owned a hydractive Citroen some years ago)
I have had my ID.3 1st plus since march 2021. Since software version 2.4 no bugs! Talked to my VW garage and it seems i have to wait for version 3.1/3.2 until September, but again nothing "funny" or bugs with 2.4. LOVE my car btw :-)
Chris. Firstly, I must tell you I'm a VW group lover. I admit I was disappointed with the ID 3 comments I read, and thought as a model it was disappointing. But, hearing you telling us how you feel about Walter, I gladdens my heart to know that the essence of VW is prominent. Also, hearing you say that you will take another VW product to replace Walter, means I will continue to subscribe to your channel. You have given a very real long term observation on ID 3 ownership, and I hope your next car will be a better pleasure of ownership, as many software bugs have been sorted and improved. An honest man who enjoys the car he has and doesn't need some other car which doesn't meet his standards. This will be more important as EVs reach the masses in terms of lower price/spec and what sacrifices people make to buy one - just as they did to but a fossil car.
2nd ID , first a Family and now an ID5. Both super vehicles. Software 3.1 and above has transformed the car,despite the odd niggle. In the scheme of things, so minor, they make zero difference to ownership !
Big VW fan here. I think it has something to do with the Beetle pedal car I had at four years old. Had a 91 MK2 Golf for 30 years. Got the last base-model MK 7.5 available in Canada in 2021. No more Golfs - only GTIs and Rs. This was disappointing. Then the software disaster. Plus the very unlikely possibility of the ID.3 arriving in North America because of the slim margins and the ridiculous trend to bigger cars. It's not looking good.
Similar to my experience. (ID.3 owner since 12.2020, 37.000km). In contrast to other owners I never had „any“ serious software issues. I charge at home with solar and rarely drive more than 300km at once. For me it just works and fits my purpose perfectly.

The ID.3 have a really good size, but is too inefficient compared with a Tesla and the guarantee is should be at-least match Tesla considering the shaky start this model had. Also there should be a draw-bar option which is a must for many people. I would prefer a Polo or Golf size electric car with a WLTP range above 500km and a reasonable price. Tesla's does not have Android Autor or Apple CarPlay.
I know exactly what you mean about the pure driving pleasure…my ID.3 puts a huge smile on my face every day..can’t wait to drive it each morning and looking forward to a journey to SW France at the end of August.
Nobody mentions the A pillar and how it obstructs driving. I took an ID3 for a test drive last week and it drives really well, but I found the A pillar blocks my view. Anybody have issues with this?
@@BatteryLife thanks for the reply. Are you saying you don't notice it or it doesn't bother you? I have a bit of OCD when it comes to this stuff. I currently have an Ioniq 5 and I do not like the way it drives. I found the ID3 to be much nicer to drive but I did notice that A pillar.
I totally understand your perspective with Walter. I had an ID.3 first edition which I swapped for an electric mini late last year…. suffice to say the Mini didn’t stay long and I’m now back in an ID.3. I feel totally at ease in the ID.3 and it’s a joy to drive, there’s no other EV on the market right now that appeals to me so I’m sticking with VW and the ID.3!!
After hearing nearly 7 minutes of wining I was getting concerned, but I know you give truth in advertising. I’m very happy you are still happy with the ID.3. My Taycan has had its glitches, but driving is amazing and I don’t mind the low seating position, after all it is a sports saloon. Enjoy Chris.
I have an ID4, stuck on the old software in the USA. I still love it. It is the only car I have owned (and maybe I should have owned some more interesting cars in my life) that actively wants me to drive it. I love being in it and just riding around.
Perhaps a stupid question. But I have a id3 of march this year. Not the updated version but 2022 model. Pro version. My question is. Do all models have seat heating like almost all electric cars. My eGolf had masses of more features compared to the pro model. I thought that would mean something pro vs basic. But no keyless entry. No rearview camera. No (?) heated seats but almost 8.000 euros more expensive than my eGolf. 🙄
Sound like a lot of trouble to me... VW has a nasty habit in pushing products on the market, which have not been fully tested/developed yet. Just wait a couple of years and then the EV's from VW will hopefully give less trouble... (and at a lower salesprice).
Sold my ID.3 1st Ed with 45k km in feb and never looked back. MY is superior in every way and 7k cheaper than ID.4 with less spec. Was a no brainer to choose MY. Best thing is that I don’t have deal with morons in the vw dealership and so far any light fixes were done at my work by a ranger. Nice!
I’m currently looking at purchasing the Id3 and ordering a home charger. I wanted to get the Zappi charger so it could integrate with my solar panel setup, but I am seeing that there is an issue with compatibility with the ID3. Can anyone from personal experience confirm or deny this issue?
Seems to me that VW have been a disaster, I understand you bought because you wanted to support a German manufacturer but really? Your a very patient man, I’d have sold it by now. All of your requirements are in my brilliant reliable car a Kia Niro.
Last summer, I witnessed an ID3 take on a new Ferrari at a UK dual carriageway roundabout from a near standing start. They were neck and neck until the ID3 stopped accelerating at the 70 mph speed limit and the Ferrari then left it behind. Presumably, the Ferrari was in eco mode (or equivalent) but it still made one heck of an impression on me.
The ID4 - slower than the ID3 and slow over all - is still a blast from 0-40. I think it hits 40 mph in about 3 seconds. A Ferrari would eat it for lunch, but it feels quick from a stop light.
I bought a used ID3 Max 1st in December 345k with 25000km on the odometer. If you look at the equipment you get with the car for that price, I think the car is a good buy, have driven 6000km with the car now and think the car has been absolutely wonderful to drive. I like that the center console is a good size, I like that the screen is not too big. I think the Matrix lights are absolutely fantastic, the seats are good and the driving feeling is good. The only thing I wish is that fast charging would be a little faster when its needed. I charge at home or at work 98% of the time so no big deal for me. On Monday next week I will have the car updated from 2.4 to 3.2
Just got my ID.3 back from 3.2 update yesterday. No problems found in the traction battery. The persistent driver selection in the infotainment is annoying but then again there is practically all the usually necessary information at the instrument cluster now so I might just leave the infotainment alone until I need navigation. But does anyone know how to get rid of the new chime sound when I stop and get out of the car?

I had an ID4 on order for over 6 months.Changed the order to an ID5, got it within 6 weeks and I am very happy with it ,came with version 3.0 and its amazing.
Great video, totally agree, for me a satisfying driving experience (confort in suspension, noise isolation, physical quality) is still a top feature with respect to super acceleration or infotainment. As if we did not have enough screens and digital stimulus in our lifes as to make it the a decisive factor in a car purchase! But of course every one should just buy the product they like the most, not trying to patronize anyone..
If Chinese EVs have such software problem, the manufacturer would fix it immediately; as letting the news out in social media would be catastrophic to sales.
I have testes several MG electric cars and the Nio ET5 all of them had big infotainment system problems or weird things. I reported. They were all not new cars, out for a while.
Been driving the ID.3 since february this year. It was delivered with software version 3.2.0 and I haven't really encountered many problems. Everything works flawless, not the most fluent, but it works. Everything it has to do it does it well. Including the safety features and other options. It just works, all the time, no matter what. The level of comfort is just so good. Everyone that drives in it immediately says it drives amazing.
I drove the BMW Z4, again too sporty and not my interior design. Too much. I have not driven Mercedes eqe or eqs. Eqa was ok.

I had an ID.3 for a week for testing and my surprising conclusion was that I'd prefer it over many other electric cars, including Tesla Model 3. Tell me Chris, am I right when I suspect lookin at your menu that you do have DCC? The car I had unfortunately none, and without it, the thing that I disliked most was the ride. The Skoda Superb I use has really spoilt me, it's almost like a fliegender Teppich with DCC. Compared to that, the ID.3 felt a bit jerky. But I can imagine that it's moe comfortable with DCC. Other than that, the ID.3 was surprisingly liveable. Good economy, still fair at 120-140 km/h. More than enough power for the city, even okay on at 140 km/h, especially as you don't have to listen to a roaring engine when flooring it. The real wheel drive has a decent grip and on dry roads it gives good acceleration even around corners. Unfortunately, the ID.3 is too small for our family. So I'd be looking forward to the ID.4/Enyaq with the new 210 kW engine if I could afford it. :-)
A very honest confession, thanks for it! I am going to buy used ID3, so what would you recommend, newer 2021+ or rather 2022 Pure ? BTW: reading about new ID3 of 2025(?) I thing it will be the best ev hatch ever! :-)
Re the 12v battery discharge issue: we bought our November 2020 1st Edition ID.3 used with one owner and 12,000 miles in March 2023. There was one immediate problem which was that we were losing 2 miles of range per hour to "vamp" drain. The problem was that the 12v battery had failed but the car was trying to charge it from the main battery. So, by software version 2.3 (2.4 ?????) They had solved 12v charging but something was still amiss. We still have not had v3.0 and await the dealer "call".
Many of the problems you had were only in the 1ST series, like the 12V battery issue. I got my car in 2021 and never had that problem. Now it seems that Kona and IONIQ guys are suffering from all kinds of 12V issues.
... I don't feel a bump ... That's German roads for you. Come to the UK: we feel the bumps even with Heidi. That said Heidi is excellent at smoothing out most rubbish road surfaces. 👍
Cupra Born is a nice car to drive but horrendous to live with. It has AC and DC charging faults Cupra have no idea what to do about. Too much comment is on range: real issue is charging. Basically you get half what website says! Disappointing VW just passed faults but not solutions down to Seat
I'm a bit depressed that i have already waited 11 month to my Skoda Enyaq 80x to arrive but on other hand when i eventually get it majority those software issues has hopefully dealt with so i don't have to suffer so much with them.
My Enyaq 80X was originally scheduled for 11 month, but I was delayed to 14 month. I think Skoda can sell much more Enyaqs if they can deliver them faster.
@@Foersom_ 14 - 20 month has been variance for 80x delivery time what i have seen. Dunno about making them faster especially when they announced 3 different EV model more so if it already take so long how will they manage deliver 5 model instead 2.
Also was an 1st Mover so been through the software and hardware fixes. I will be getting 3.2 in a couple of weeks and the SOS Module replaced. I do look at others but nothing fits the bill like the ID.3: it is a hatchback, it is not a huge car, not a SUV. It is, as you say, easy to drive. I use the ACC, auto wipers, auto lights. The heated steering wheel is great. You missed off the magnificent Active Matrix LED headlights. I looked at the Renault Megane eTech - it feels so small, dark inside. The cargo area is deep with a huge lip but shallow - not good for me. As a eGolf user I still after 2.5 years am waiting for the ID.3 software and mobile app to get to the same, essential in my view, functions as I had on CarNet on the eGolf: scheduled charging, map location of the car, the ConnectID app promises to get their (with 3.2) but its a long wait.
Had my VW ID.3 car jus.2 months. It’s a great car to drive and I will not now go back to ice car. I am lucky with Software 3.2 came with car & has ironed out almost all problems owners mention here before. So far no software issues have arisen . The car software here and there has its foibles and you need to know & learn where to set what you want. Especially with charging.Once you know it’s great. Most irritating feature was voice commands that interrupt conversations lol . But I have turned it off now. It’s quiet smooth and so easy to drive
You should buy a Ferrari their EV is going to be out in 2025, I'm sure it'll be better than your ID.3 after all think of Ferrari's reputation for reliable and everyday cars.
Funny, 3 years back, i swore not to get a VW again, after experiencing their garbage software on a Golf GTE. My conclution where, if they cant do software for a ICE car, it wont be good in an EV.. Guess i was not wrong ^^
I didn't had that much issues with my car after ~130.000km. The E-Call module was broken and the Drive Mode set itself back to Comfort after a few days. But this Drive Mode problem seems to be gone with the 3.2 update. Unfortunately since 3.2 my Keyless system doesn't work properly. I can close the car with it, but to open i have to use the physical key. What i really don't like about the software is the navigation system. Had it multiple times, that it want to send me into one-way roads or roads with physical barriers. And the new SoC prediction which came with 3.2 isn't that gread either. Drove yesterday 230km on the Autobahn, at the start it was predicting 16% at arrival, after 190km driving the prediction was down to 1%. Decided to continue because i knew it was all the way downhill to the destination and arrived with 5% at the charger. This is not good at all. And battery preconditioning is so much needed in winter... Haven't seen 3digit power numbers the whole time in the winter.
Owned a Tesla Model Y for two weeks before returning it to the dealer and buying a different car. Would rather have a broken VW ID.3 than any Tesla, so i completely understand you.
I think your comments are fair as everyone likes different cars for personal reasons. Tesla has some cheaper looking and feeling parts like all cars. Tesla build quality still not as good as VW group. I looked at a model 3 but my Cupra Born was a lot cheaper a year ago than a similar spec Tesla and the Born / ID3 has more passenger cabin space / rear leg room. Tesla software is better and has far more information than the VW or Korean cars. Heads up display is a must for any car especially if you only have one screen on the dash. VW cars can be connected to software / mechanics scan and reset tools like VCDS where Tesla will not allow this. Many electric cars have technology we don't really need but it sells cars to people who like flashing lights and air vents that change colour depending on air con temperature setting.
Looks like there are a lot of us ID3 owners who agree with you. OTA updates have never worked on my car, I eventually got 3.0 installed by the dealer. Chris, you said you still have issues with the 3.0 software, what are they? Mine seems to be fine.
Great to hear, not loving my Born, it has beautifully 20” wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres, but there is an annoying humming sound/vibration from something on the tyre or front axle, I have to find time to take it to Cupra. Made a sound recording, I bet they say it’s nothing, but it’s not!
Well said - it's first and foremost a car; like the device we carry around with us is first and foremost a phone! Anything else is extra and sometimes worth paying a bit more for. My issues with the VW software is when it does something dangerous - I'm talking the ACC here. Slowing down suddenly on a busy fast road when it misreads a sign, or speeding up when something leads it to think the speed is 80mph (happened last weekend on a 50mph road; no road in UK is more that 70mph).
Thanks for this (another great film) and above all - Thanks for continuing to hang out with us. We decided to trade in our ID.3. After 2,5 years we got a great trade-in deal against a new Volvo C40. Yes we were looking for a bit bigger car. But the main reasons for disposing of the ID.3 instead of our other car (Golf GTE) were: the seats in the first edition plus were poor, the software was so poor we worked with apple carplay the whole time, low quality hard plastics (we knew about when buying teh car but after a while it wears), stupid mistakes like no back lighting on the slider on the infotainment system, the haptic buttons are just annoying rubbish. The basics of the car are good ... 58kwh range is enough. 125 kw is fast enough, the boot and leg room are big enough, the acceleration is just fine. I'm sure a facelift bringing the quality in line with that of a golf will give the ID.3 a much needed impulse. It can be a great car ... but in my view first edition was not yet it.
Hello love this channel and I love the id.3. It was your reviews that persuaded me. Nearly a year of trouble free motoring …. but sadly it looks like the on board charger has broke. I can only rapid charge until I get it looked at. Is this a common issue?
I don’t think bashing another car will make my car any better. Like it or not but cars are going to be computers on wheels. So software will become very important. VW should be able to make cars with great software and I am sure they will soon. I remember when I hated iPhone or android phones when they were launched as they lacked physical keyboard or the call quality was not as good. So car companies with bad software will be like my old blackberry phone imo.
That Volkswagen feeling. I have a Corsa-e and a petrol Astra, but every time I sit behind the wheel of a golf... it is just something else. It is so nice just to drive in it I can not describe it better.
My ID3 Max is going in for the software upgrade on Monday. Only got it booked in because I need the air con fixing. Less the 2 years old and the air con packs up! I like driving the ID3 but 50:50 as to whether I keep it or get another one.
We are with you all the way. We also had some awful software problems but we have tested other EVs and non fit our driving style like the ID3. We also think the shape and size is ideal for our taste and requirements. Our next choice of car will be interesting as it will be difficult to buy another VW EV after the problems we have had. When are Audi going to release their ID3 equivalent?
your not the only one that has suffered the phantom 12v issue, this unfortunately is still a common issue, vw need to seriously improve the control unit reliability issue with the refresh, along with a host of other software fixes, and vw still must offer a lighter interior roof lining option with the 77kwh models that can;t have a sunroof option due to weight limits in a number of countries

Hi, how do you find driving in the snow, with rear wheel drive? I'm considering buying a used id3.
I first had an ID.3 with version 1.0 as a company car but when I left, we bought an ID.3 ourselves (Makena Turkish, 1st edition). Yes, I had some software issues and would like some more range or faster charging but just as you said: it drives great! Some friends of mine have Model 3’s and my god, I hate that suspension! So far (knocks on wood) my ID.3 has never left me stranded (probably jinxed it now) and what’s also important: the issues I had (ghost rear reading light, SOS module failure etc) were all fixed under warranty. Even the first few checkups are free for ID-owners in the Netherlands!
This week I called my dealer for the 3.2 update; it’s planned for october 9th, together with the high-voltage battery recall check and although that’s a long time (busy schedule, lack of qualified engineers), I don’t really mind. The car works, 2.4 works and for the navigation and such I always use CarPlay anyway.
Each time I see my car, I love it and I enjoy driving it every time!
Love my ID4 so far. Yes there are other cars that have some Great stuff. Love Rivians, but too spendy, and doesn't have carplay. Overall build quality seems pretty solid. There isn't an EV out there without some kind of quirk or issue.
I really appreciate all the technical help and news you bring to the ID3 and other cars.
I have had my ID3 "Idris" for just over a year and the software issues have mostly been niggles,
; wrong configuration settings when updated to 2.4, not connecting to the app for a few days, occasional display bugs.
(Should have kept quiet... Idris has just stopped talking to the Internet:-( )
Personally I like the haptic buttons. I would love to be able go to my dealer and get upgrades (sound system, horn, sensors)
As you say, driving is superb, quiet, comfortable and relaxing.
Would love the app to have features that our renault Zoe has (total miles and charge history). The app add ons that come with 3.2 software sound awesome.
Why not replace Walter with a face-lift ID3? Seems to be the ideal match for you....❤😊
I have also suffered from the offline issue from time to time, but 3.0 fixed that as it installed a new firmware on the communication module. This is a common problem on some older cars.

I do use a Hyundai Kona EV that the company provides me for work, and i still try to drive my own ID.4 as often as possible while working, for all the same pleasant reasons. OS is not great, but the car is!
EV drivers put up with a lot. The software is very glitchy in the cars and when we turn up to charge the car the flipping charger isn’t working. My goodness what a palaver and still the EV cars are grossly overpriced as well.
Come on the U.K. Government get the charger infrastructure sorted and make the 14 or so private charging companies accountable if chargers remain out of commotion for any length of time.

I’ve had my ID3 for almost 2 years and I feel privileged to have this car.
We have to put things into perspective, I’ve been driving for 40 years, this car exceeds anything I could have dreamt of. People take technology for granted these days, make no mistake, this is leading edge technology and VW have done a better job than most of the other established automakers.
Software has been fine, could be better but it hasn’t been an issue.
The car is comfortable, spacious, quiet, smooth, economical and has superb features. Mine doesn’t have a name like Walter but I’d sure miss it if it was gone!
Makes me wish this car was available in US, although hatches don’t sell that well here. I love your take, Chris. Despite its good and not so good quirks, it still rates with you. Comparing it with 50 other cars, you know what you want and like, and we can’t fault you or the car if - after all you’ve been through - you still like Walter.
I would like to drive an ID.3, but VW does not sell it in USA. Still, I love my 35.8 kWh e-Golf and have -55,000 miles after 5 years - it puts a smile on my face every single time I drive it.
I sat in an ID3 this week, the first time since they were released so was expecting a poor interior from most reviews I have seen over the few years its been out. I was blown away, it felt very nice, was very comfortable. I have a Golf 7.5 at present and I am confident I will get on well with the ID3, it felt like the Golf. So much so that once used pricing drops to within budget I will buy one.
ID.3 has evolved a lot and usually the reviews are full of BS. It's a completely different thing when you actually own the car.
I'm also a 1st Edition driver and like you I love the car despite its faults. I haven't had any catastrophic problems with the software, just minor bugs, and I'm looking forward to hearing from my dealer with an appointment to update the car to 3.2 after which I'm hoping everything will work as it should.
Software problems naturally irritate motoring journalists, but owner drivers work around them and find a way to use the car despite the bugs. In regular use it's the driving experience that defines your relationship with the car, not the software bugs. And the car drives brilliantly.
I don´t have any problems with the car. I love it.
I want to thank VW for showing me how an EV should not be like.

Love Pelly my ID.3 1st Pro Plus that was one of the first delivered in UK during pandemic. Yes, 12v battery problems but quickly fixed, failed door sensor again fixed quickly and a couple of updates that had to be done at dealer. No other problems. Still on 2.3 so happy to let others get issues with 3.0 and 3.2 resolved first as 2.3 works just fine. Drove from UK to South of France and it was perfect. Comfortable, pleasant driving with plenty of room for luggage and various friends + dogs on the way. Enough range and charging speed for someone who needs to stop every 150 miles to retain motorway sanity! And kudos to France for their charging networks......Ionity and Total Energie everywhere on autoroutes. Currently running on sunshine from solar panels .... very happy as fuel prices rose last year and the sun shone all summer.
I just bought a 2020 58kWh! So excited to learn about it. Will be watching more of your tips videos.

I know what you mean. I test drove the ID3 and it was very nice. I also test drove the Volvo C40 and it was one of the most uncomfortable cars I've ever driven, and my own diesel Kia feels like a magic carpet compared to that. Both the seats and suspension are much softer. But I could happily drive the ID3. (and yes, I have owned a hydractive Citroen some years ago)
I have had my ID.3 1st plus since march 2021. Since software version 2.4 no bugs! Talked to my VW garage and it seems i have to wait for version 3.1/3.2 until September,
but again nothing "funny" or bugs with 2.4. LOVE my car btw :-)
Chris. Firstly, I must tell you I'm a VW group lover. I admit I was disappointed with the ID 3 comments I read, and thought as a model it was disappointing. But, hearing you telling us how you feel about Walter, I gladdens my heart to know that the essence of VW is prominent. Also, hearing you say that you will take another VW product to replace Walter, means I will continue to subscribe to your channel. You have given a very real long term observation on ID 3 ownership, and I hope your next car will be a better pleasure of ownership, as many software bugs have been sorted and improved. An honest man who enjoys the car he has and doesn't need some other car which doesn't meet his standards. This will be more important as EVs reach the masses in terms of lower price/spec and what sacrifices people make to buy one - just as they did to but a fossil car.
2nd ID , first a Family and now an ID5. Both super vehicles. Software 3.1 and above has transformed the car,despite the odd niggle. In the scheme of things, so minor, they make zero difference to ownership !
After 18 months and some 55.000 km I still love the car. It's a beautiful car that drives great. Has some hickups now and then but nothing major.
Big VW fan here. I think it has something to do with the Beetle pedal car I had at four years old. Had a 91 MK2 Golf for 30 years. Got the last base-model MK 7.5 available in Canada in 2021. No more Golfs - only GTIs and Rs. This was disappointing. Then the software disaster. Plus the very unlikely possibility of the ID.3 arriving in North America because of the slim margins and the ridiculous trend to bigger cars. It's not looking good.
Similar to my experience. (ID.3 owner since 12.2020, 37.000km). In contrast to other owners I never had „any“ serious software issues. I charge at home with solar and rarely drive more than 300km at once. For me it just works and fits my purpose perfectly.
In my case it was love at the first sight...and I am still in love with my Heidi ( ID.3 First, bought in October 2020 )

The ID.3 have a really good size, but is too inefficient compared with a Tesla and the guarantee is should be at-least match Tesla considering the shaky start this model had. Also there should be a draw-bar option which is a must for many people. I would prefer a Polo or Golf size electric car with a WLTP range above 500km and a reasonable price.
Tesla's does not have Android Autor or Apple CarPlay.
I know exactly what you mean about the pure driving pleasure…my ID.3 puts a huge smile on my face every day..can’t wait to drive it each morning and looking forward to a journey to SW France at the end of August.
Nobody mentions the A pillar and how it obstructs driving. I took an ID3 for a test drive last week and it drives really well, but I found the A pillar blocks my view. Anybody have issues with this?

I totally understand your perspective with Walter. I had an ID.3 first edition which I swapped for an electric mini late last year…. suffice to say the Mini didn’t stay long and I’m now back in an ID.3. I feel totally at ease in the ID.3 and it’s a joy to drive, there’s no other EV on the market right now that appeals to me so I’m sticking with VW and the ID.3!!

My Taycan has had its glitches, but driving is amazing and I don’t mind the low seating position, after all it is a sports saloon.

I have an ID4, stuck on the old software in the USA. I still love it. It is the only car I have owned (and maybe I should have owned some more interesting cars in my life) that actively wants me to drive it. I love being in it and just riding around.
Perhaps a stupid question. But I have a id3 of march this year. Not the updated version but 2022 model. Pro version. My question is. Do all models have seat heating like almost all electric cars. My eGolf had masses of more features compared to the pro model. I thought that would mean something pro vs basic. But no keyless entry. No rearview camera. No (?) heated seats but almost 8.000 euros more expensive than my eGolf. 🙄
9 hours for a software update!!! Sounds like VW need better software developers.
Sound like a lot of trouble to me... VW has a nasty habit in pushing products on the market, which have not been fully tested/developed yet. Just wait a couple of years and then the EV's from VW will hopefully give less trouble... (and at a lower salesprice).
Sold my ID.3 1st Ed with 45k km in feb and never looked back. MY is superior in every way and 7k cheaper than ID.4 with less spec. Was a no brainer to choose MY. Best thing is that I don’t have deal with morons in the vw dealership and so far any light fixes were done at my work by a ranger. Nice!

After navigation problems ( infotainment reboot) i received the 3.2 software at vw dealer today. Let you know if yhe problems are fixed.

I’m currently looking at purchasing the Id3 and ordering a home charger. I wanted to get the Zappi charger so it could integrate with my solar panel setup, but I am seeing that there is an issue with compatibility with the ID3. Can anyone from personal experience confirm or deny this issue?
Seems to me that VW have been a disaster, I understand you bought because you wanted to support a German manufacturer but really? Your a very patient man, I’d have sold it by now. All of your requirements are in my brilliant reliable car a Kia Niro.

Last summer, I witnessed an ID3 take on a new Ferrari at a UK dual carriageway roundabout from a near standing start. They were neck and neck until the ID3 stopped accelerating at the 70 mph speed limit and the Ferrari then left it behind.
Presumably, the Ferrari was in eco mode (or equivalent) but it still made one heck of an impression on me.
Well, the Pro Performance goes pretty fiercely from 0 to 50 km/h.
The ID4 - slower than the ID3 and slow over all - is still a blast from 0-40. I think it hits 40 mph in about 3 seconds. A Ferrari would eat it for lunch, but it feels quick from a stop light.
I bought a used ID3 Max 1st in December 345k with 25000km on the odometer. If you look at the equipment you get with the car for that price, I think the car is a good buy, have driven 6000km with the car now and think the car has been absolutely wonderful to drive. I like that the center console is a good size, I like that the screen is not too big. I think the Matrix lights are absolutely fantastic, the seats are good and the driving feeling is good. The only thing I wish is that fast charging would be a little faster when its needed. I charge at home or at work 98% of the time so no big deal for me. On Monday next week I will have the car updated from 2.4 to 3.2
Just got my ID.3 back from 3.2 update yesterday. No problems found in the traction battery. The persistent driver selection in the infotainment is annoying but then again there is practically all the usually necessary information at the instrument cluster now so I might just leave the infotainment alone until I need navigation. But does anyone know how to get rid of the new chime sound when I stop and get out of the car?
Is it not the goodbye sound that you can turn off?

I had an ID4 on order for over 6 months.Changed the order to an ID5, got it within 6 weeks and I am very happy with it ,came with version 3.0 and its amazing.

Great video, totally agree, for me a satisfying driving experience (confort in suspension, noise isolation, physical quality) is still a top feature with respect to super acceleration or infotainment. As if we did not have enough screens and digital stimulus in our lifes as to make it the a decisive factor in a car purchase! But of course every one should just buy the product they like the most, not trying to patronize anyone..
If Chinese EVs have such software problem, the manufacturer would fix it immediately; as letting the news out in social media would be catastrophic to sales.
I have testes several MG electric cars and the Nio ET5
all of them had big infotainment system problems or weird things. I reported.
They were all not new cars, out for a while.

Been driving the ID.3 since february this year. It was delivered with software version 3.2.0 and I haven't really encountered many problems. Everything works flawless, not the most fluent, but it works. Everything it has to do it does it well. Including the safety features and other options. It just works, all the time, no matter what. The level of comfort is just so good. Everyone that drives in it immediately says it drives amazing.
I agree. My SW version is 3.0.0 the car just works. It is very reliable.

I had an ID.3 for a week for testing and my surprising conclusion was that I'd prefer it over many other electric cars, including Tesla Model 3.
Tell me Chris, am I right when I suspect lookin at your menu that you do have DCC? The car I had unfortunately none, and without it, the thing that I disliked most was the ride. The Skoda Superb I use has really spoilt me, it's almost like a fliegender Teppich with DCC. Compared to that, the ID.3 felt a bit jerky. But I can imagine that it's moe comfortable with DCC.
Other than that, the ID.3 was surprisingly liveable. Good economy, still fair at 120-140 km/h. More than enough power for the city, even okay on at 140 km/h, especially as you don't have to listen to a roaring engine when flooring it. The real wheel drive has a decent grip and on dry roads it gives good acceleration even around corners.
Unfortunately, the ID.3 is too small for our family. So I'd be looking forward to the ID.4/Enyaq with the new 210 kW engine if I could afford it. :-)
A very honest confession, thanks for it! I am going to buy used ID3, so what would you recommend, newer 2021+ or rather 2022 Pure ? BTW: reading about new ID3 of 2025(?) I thing it will be the best ev hatch ever! :-)
Re the 12v battery discharge issue: we bought our November 2020 1st Edition ID.3 used with one owner and 12,000 miles in March 2023. There was one immediate problem which was that we were losing 2 miles of range per hour to "vamp" drain.
The problem was that the 12v battery had failed but the car was trying to charge it from the main battery. So, by software version 2.3 (2.4 ?????) They had solved 12v charging but something was still amiss.
We still have not had v3.0 and await the dealer "call".
Many of the problems you had were only in the 1ST series, like the 12V battery issue. I got my car in 2021 and never had that problem. Now it seems that Kona and IONIQ guys are suffering from all kinds of 12V issues.

Cupra Born is a nice car to drive but horrendous to live with. It has AC and DC charging faults Cupra have no idea what to do about. Too much comment is on range: real issue is charging. Basically you get half what website says! Disappointing VW just passed faults but not solutions down to Seat
I'm a bit depressed that i have already waited 11 month to my Skoda Enyaq 80x to arrive but on other hand when i eventually get it majority those software issues has hopefully dealt with so i don't have to suffer so much with them.
My Enyaq 80X was originally scheduled for 11 month, but I was delayed to 14 month. I think Skoda can sell much more Enyaqs if they can deliver them faster.

Also was an 1st Mover so been through the software and hardware fixes. I will be getting 3.2 in a couple of weeks and the SOS Module replaced. I do look at others but nothing fits the bill like the ID.3: it is a hatchback, it is not a huge car, not a SUV. It is, as you say, easy to drive. I use the ACC, auto wipers, auto lights. The heated steering wheel is great. You missed off the magnificent Active Matrix LED headlights.
I looked at the Renault Megane eTech - it feels so small, dark inside. The cargo area is deep with a huge lip but shallow - not good for me.
As a eGolf user I still after 2.5 years am waiting for the ID.3 software and mobile app to get to the same, essential in my view, functions as I had on CarNet on the eGolf: scheduled charging, map location of the car, the ConnectID app promises to get their (with 3.2) but its a long wait.
Had my VW ID.3 car jus.2 months. It’s a great car to drive and I will not now go back to ice car. I am lucky with Software 3.2 came with car & has ironed out almost all problems owners mention here before. So far no software issues have arisen . The car software here and there has its foibles and you need to know & learn where to set what you want. Especially with charging.Once you know it’s great. Most irritating feature was voice commands that interrupt conversations lol . But I have turned it off now. It’s quiet smooth and so easy to drive
You should buy a Ferrari their EV is going to be out in 2025, I'm sure it'll be better than your ID.3 after all think of Ferrari's reputation for reliable and everyday cars.
Funny, 3 years back, i swore not to get a VW again, after experiencing their garbage software on a Golf GTE. My conclution where, if they cant do software for a ICE car, it wont be good in an EV.. Guess i was not wrong ^^
I didn't had that much issues with my car after ~130.000km. The E-Call module was broken and the Drive Mode set itself back to Comfort after a few days. But this Drive Mode problem seems to be gone with the 3.2 update.
Unfortunately since 3.2 my Keyless system doesn't work properly. I can close the car with it, but to open i have to use the physical key.
What i really don't like about the software is the navigation system. Had it multiple times, that it want to send me into one-way roads or roads with physical barriers.
And the new SoC prediction which came with 3.2 isn't that gread either. Drove yesterday 230km on the Autobahn, at the start it was predicting 16% at arrival, after 190km driving the prediction was down to 1%. Decided to continue because i knew it was all the way downhill to the destination and arrived with 5% at the charger.
This is not good at all.
And battery preconditioning is so much needed in winter... Haven't seen 3digit power numbers the whole time in the winter.

I think your comments are fair as everyone likes different cars for personal reasons. Tesla has some cheaper looking and feeling parts like all cars. Tesla build quality still not as good as VW group. I looked at a model 3 but my Cupra Born was a lot cheaper a year ago than a similar spec Tesla and the Born / ID3 has more passenger cabin space / rear leg room. Tesla software is better and has far more information than the VW or Korean cars. Heads up display is a must for any car especially if you only have one screen on the dash. VW cars can be connected to software / mechanics scan and reset tools like VCDS where Tesla will not allow this. Many electric cars have technology we don't really need but it sells cars to people who like flashing lights and air vents that change colour depending on air con temperature setting.
Never drive an electric car my self, but was driving home by falck in a ID 4 really a lovely car. VW ❤🇩🇪🇩🇰

Looks like there are a lot of us ID3 owners who agree with you. OTA updates have never worked on my car, I eventually got 3.0 installed by the dealer. Chris, you said you still have issues with the 3.0 software, what are they? Mine seems to be fine.
Great to hear, not loving my Born, it has beautifully 20” wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres, but there is an annoying humming sound/vibration from something on the tyre or front axle, I have to find time to take it to Cupra. Made a sound recording, I bet they say it’s nothing, but it’s not!
Well said - it's first and foremost a car; like the device we carry around with us is first and foremost a phone! Anything else is extra and sometimes worth paying a bit more for.
My issues with the VW software is when it does something dangerous - I'm talking the ACC here. Slowing down suddenly on a busy fast road when it misreads a sign, or speeding up when something leads it to think the speed is 80mph (happened last weekend on a 50mph road; no road in UK is more that 70mph).
I know these feeling! Despite my Ioniq has a small 28 kwh of battery capacity, I really like it! 😂
Thanks for this (another great film) and above all - Thanks for continuing to hang out with us. We decided to trade in our ID.3. After 2,5 years we got a great trade-in deal against a new Volvo C40. Yes we were looking for a bit bigger car. But the main reasons for disposing of the ID.3 instead of our other car (Golf GTE) were: the seats in the first edition plus were poor, the software was so poor we worked with apple carplay the whole time, low quality hard plastics (we knew about when buying teh car but after a while it wears), stupid mistakes like no back lighting on the slider on the infotainment system, the haptic buttons are just annoying rubbish. The basics of the car are good ... 58kwh range is enough. 125 kw is fast enough, the boot and leg room are big enough, the acceleration is just fine. I'm sure a facelift bringing the quality in line with that of a golf will give the ID.3 a much needed impulse. It can be a great car ... but in my view first edition was not yet it.

I don’t think bashing another car will make my car any better. Like it or not but cars are going to be computers on wheels. So software will become very important. VW should be able to make cars with great software and I am sure they will soon. I remember when I hated iPhone or android phones when they were launched as they lacked physical keyboard or the call quality was not as good. So car companies with bad software will be like my old blackberry phone imo.

That Volkswagen feeling. I have a Corsa-e and a petrol Astra, but every time I sit behind the wheel of a golf... it is just something else. It is so nice just to drive in it I can not describe it better.
My ID3 Max is going in for the software upgrade on Monday. Only got it booked in because I need the air con fixing. Less the 2 years old and the air con packs up! I like driving the ID3 but 50:50 as to whether I keep it or get another one.
We are with you all the way. We also had some awful software problems but we have tested other EVs and non fit our driving style like the ID3. We also think the shape and size is ideal for our taste and requirements. Our next choice of car will be interesting as it will be difficult to buy another VW EV after the problems we have had. When are Audi going to release their ID3 equivalent?
your not the only one that has suffered the phantom 12v issue, this unfortunately is still a common issue, vw need to seriously improve the control unit reliability issue with the refresh, along with a host of other software fixes, and vw still must offer a lighter interior roof lining option with the 77kwh models that can;t have a sunroof option due to weight limits in a number of countries
