I remember hearing stories about people who bought full price tickets just to see this trailer in theaters. This was before online video streaming obviously.
arbitterm It’s true, all of it...
I lived during the 1990s and I can assure you we did have online video streaming for film trailers
@@Waterford1992 I remember they weren't very good and very high quality. Also it took FOREVER to get them to play.
We had QuickTime trailers took a good amount of time to load HD version but yes full price tix were sold for this trailer, sold well too
Daniel Macias There was no HD that I recall? Just high quality which was 480p. Correct me if I’m wrong. I remember the quality of most videos was god awful though, 144p and it took a good minute to buffer or download.

It was great, people were camping like crazy at the theater by my house. Great memories.
@@dexterlacroy4132 Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? ... I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life ;)

Should've seen the look on my 9yr old face when my uncle told me Anakin was Vader
Stop bringing back memories *man tear*
What a dick your uncle is...😂😂
@@Anth230 enh debatable
My dad did the same thing - I was 8 at the time though. I remember telling him, that I like star wars movies, but only the ones without Vader in them (meaning obviously the Phantom Menace, as others weren't made yet). Then he told me: "But Vader is in all of them. It's Anakin Skywalker". I couldn't speak for almost an hour, just kept going through my mind how horrible the world is :)
Did you not see the original trilogy before this? I was 10 and knew exactly who anakin and palpatine were lol
Can’t tell you how many times we watched the end of this trailer to see Obi-Wan vs Maul. That little snippet was enough to drive every Star Wars fan into the theater.
No we didn't...
December 1998, I first saw this run in front of The Prince of Egypt.
Well you saw A Phantom Menace trailer, but it wasn't this one. This one came out 20 years ago today.
i’d say march 15th, 99 is this trailer that was played in theaters
I never comment on RUclips comments, but I had to for this. Mad respect.

That blew my mind.
my birthday!
People don't remember what movie they paid to watch, but they remember this trailer.
They kept anakin a secret too! Goosebumps every time I see this trailer
My uncle downloaded this and I remember watching and being blown away at 11 years old. Shaped me to who I am today
How did it shape you
But still...you can't tell me the lightsaber battles didn't get u hyped in this trailer!!!
they still get me hyped. That's the only thing about this whole movie that's any good. And I was a youngling when it came out, and I still thought it was shit other than the 3 way lightsaber duel at the end. Shoulda been more Maul focused, less Palpatine focused, at least until episode 3 , then make Palpatine your main bad pulling the strings all along
Couldn't help to be hyped for the first Star War movie in 16 years. Just like with Force Awakens.
@@aznsbd Weird how the 16 years between ROTJ and TPM seemed forever...but the 16 years between TPM and TFA or even 10 years between ROTS and TFA seems like a much shorter wait....it's just my age catching up with me I think...lol
@@Anth230 Probably cause Lucas never released anything major star wars related in between the ROTJ and TPM. No matter how old I get I will never not adore this film. I remember waiting for hours for a tiny Quicktime window to load this trailer and the excitement it ignited in me. Very few film trailers in recent years have had the impact in me that the trailers for Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones had. I know it is considered uncool to love the Prequels so unabashedly and yet I do. They were the Trilogy I saw in the theater. I did get to see the Special Edition of A New Hope in the theater, but I am glad I got to see Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith all in theaters. The opening line of the Phantom Menace teaser trailer was "Every generation has a legend." And this was my generation's legend. Is it any wonder that in 2019 they used that exact phrase verbatim on the trailer for Rise of Skywalker?
Anyone else remember waiting 4 hours just to watch this trailer load one frame at a time on Quicktime with a 56k?
6 hours
Omg you just opened a forgotten timecapsule in my brain about quicktime.lmao
YES.jpg
Why I am getting chills after 20 years?! Saw this one on TV, but paid to see the Waterboy to see the first trailer. Then theater hopped to see the trailer twice more...but never ended up staying for the Waterboy!
1:56 You can tell this is a pre-Marvel trailer when they cut out a character from a scene to avoid spoilers
Qui Gon?
Best Star Wars trailer ever. Who remembers waiting hours for this bad boy to load and the excitement you felt when it was at 95%?!
I am so happy to see so many people remembering the quicktime wait for this trailer.
Took forever, like hours and our school actually had broadband back then 😂
I have fantastic memories of seeing this movie in the theater. My friends and I were so excited to see the movie in the famed prequels we had heard about for ages! As well, I had surgery the day before and I was high on painkillers which make this movie fantastic!
People don’t remember that we didn’t get to see the Jedi do anything before this movie. Now there’s so much of them flipping around and stuff but that was brand new at the time we could only read about it
I remember seeing this trailer in the QuickTime movie format in the apple's website...
When Natalie said "Get to your ships!" at 1:40 it always sounds better than in the actual film. In the film it sounds like she's struggling to swallow a glass of milk
True, I'm guessing this is sound from the set, feels like there is actual action happening. In the film it's a bad ADR line, really flat, almost no energy. Makes me wonder how much of that flat prequel delivery is bad ADR.
Yeah in the movie she says it in her "queen amidala voice". Sounds way better in the trailer, much more emotion.
1:39 versus ruclips.net/video/2RJ5MijWduE/видео.html. Maybe one's the real queen and the other's her double?
1:39
That's the one thing that stood out to me, seeing this so many years (and SO MANY viewings of the movie) later. She's speaking in her Queen Amidala voice, but it hasn't been modulated to be deeper like it was in the film. It sounds like...Natalie Portman doing a voice.
I miss the good ol' Phantom Menace movie trailer back in the late 90s.
I didn't see this one as many times as the first trailer.
Perfect trailer. The sudden outbreak of darkness at the end with sideous, and obi wan screaming gives me the chills
For me, the Duel of Fates is the greatest Lightsaber battle of all time. Nothing comes close, before or since.
Sorry itll have to be a second for me. As luke vs vader or better put when luke goes full rage into vader to protect leia is number 1 and the score is brilliant there too
I like the reimagined Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan on the Death Star. Funny, I just saw a light saber battle ad for an energy drink for men before a Lucas interview video. the girl showed a lot of hip.
Yes! Agreed!
I’ll never forget seeing this trailer in April of 1999 at technology conference my 6th grade year of middle school, it was a very profound day for me.
This trailer was and perhaps still is, the best piece of advertisement for a film ever! Yes, I left the theater disappointed on the fateful May afternoon, but I strongly believe that part of it was this trailer promised something that could not be delivered. It was an AWESOME trailer! Not being old enough to be allowed internet access at the time, (yes children, those days existed) I can’t remember how many times I had my older brother que this thing up after dinner. Good times!
Omg I remember the publicity for this movie in 1999 was INSANE it was a huge deal. Phantom Menace definitely made it a memorable summer at the movies for me.
I remember seeing this trailer at 15 or so, it was incredibly powerful. Everyone imagined this movie in their head and let me tell you, it was nothing like we thought. The hype generated from these trailers, the music, the visuals, nothing could have prepared me for the earth shattering reality when I finally saw it opening day...😔
I thought it was going to be some epic thing... And then Jar Jar appeared.
@@Mario_N64 I originally perceived that character in the trailer as a female alien warrior, especially from the teaser trailer. It’s when I heard the line “Issa people gonna die?” Is when I had doubts.
@@Barnsy40 I originally thought it was some sort of "shaman" warrior character, a serious one, like a Native American or something.

Jesus. This trailer still gives me chills
People in 2000: The prequels are the worst thing to happen to Star Wars
Disney in 2016: Hold my blue milk
Disney has also put out some of the best Star Wars content of any era (the Mandalorian, Clone Wars, Fallen Order, Rogue One, etc). You win some you lose some.
This movie is underrated.
I like this movie very much.
The podracers are for sure the coolest vehicles ever. I remember how hyped I was watching them in both trailers. That closing shot before the title card is pure adrenaline.
I loved the Phantom Menace for what it is, not what it was made out to be by this Trailer.
Although I personally love the prequels, I do see why so many people were disappointed: they were a different style of movie than the originals, and the plot progressed weirdly. These movies are best looked at as a sort of a play, and only a sample of what was going on in the Star Wars universe at the time each movie takes place. George had too much he wanted to show but so little time (movies are two hours) to show it all in a decent way.
I left the theater saying 'I want to be a Jedi'... the lightsaber duels and the pod racing were epic. But even then I remember feeling like something was missing.
It was originally considered as teenage or adult Anakin follows Obi-Wan on "some damned-fool crusade" during the Clone Wars. Maybe like two would-be samurai looking for a lord and teacher. When questioned about Obi-Wan's story Lucas said he lied. I guess he lied too about saying Vader betrayed and murdered his father (which was true until Lucas made Vader his father in 1978).
If they rereleased this in theaters I'd go again in a heartbeat. I went more than once and saw the 3D one too. Still mad we didn't get the rest in 3D especially as I know they'd finished the Prequel versions! I waited decades and was NOT disappointed. I'm still not. It's my favorite 'stand alone' of the Lucas movies.
How would you rank the movies, out of curiosity
Saw the charity re-release and the 3D version too. Great memories of sitting in the theater on a hot summer day watching the Tatooine scenes.
My dad and I went and saw this together and both of us loved it!!!!

More excited by this trailer (25 years later) than the film itself.
I remember seeing the trailer around Christmas time in 1998, can't even remember what movie we were seeing. After we saw this trailer my mom turned to me and exclaimed, "That looks good!"
If only Star Wars would be this good one day again!!
If Disney remakes this for grownups then I'll see it.
Well in hindsight, I guess the movie really couldn’t live up to the hype, and this trailer remains one of the best movie marketing pieces EVER!

The day the trailer hit theaters, and you knew someone would put it online, but it would be low quality and take forever to download, or it would take a bit to be online officially, many of us went to any movie showing it to see the trailer. For me, I went during my lunch and bought a ticket for Wing Commander, watched this trailer, then went back to work not watching the movie. I saw Wing Commander that night, so saw the trailer twice that day. Wing Commander actually did very well sales-wise that day because of the Star Wars trailer, which was hilarious as most folks hated the Wing Commander movie or never even watched it. I don't care what people think about us all doing that, it was magical and to be able to share in that much excitement with tons of people was awesome.
These trailers were amazing.

I still think TPM is a great movie, it just wasn't what the trailer made it out to be.
I assume detractors of the new series will feel the same about them as they do the prequels now. Remember how everyone HATED them at the time?
Someone said kids didn't post their love of Phantom Menace online in 1999, so adult fans "controlled the media."
We're the same age!
It's true. We bought tickets in 1998 and 1999 just to watch the two trailers. Then walked out immediately after.
Still my favorite of all the prequels
When I saw this trailer one could anticipate Qui-Gon Jinn's death. It is still painful.
Before this movie came out I had this trailer saved in apple quicktime format and watched it every day for a couple of weeks... I remember thinking it was going to be awesome... such a sad day that was when I left that theater.

Okay everyone, it was 1998 the teaser was on Enemy of the State, the full trailer was on Wing Commander and let me tell you it was packed. People were so ready for the trailer alone they were dressed like the character just to see the trailer and when the movie itself came out the critics didn’t like it but the fans loved it and couldn’t wait for more. Watch the movie and then watch this trailer. Natalie Portman's voice must've been dubbed, because she sounds really high pitched here.
