It is about the aesthetics of a segmented display not the pure functionality. But I would like something less matrix-like myself. Maybe even a full font inspired by the design of segemented displays.

When you get to this point of complexity a dot matrix display is simpler, more flexible (you can write kana, devanagari, etc) and allow for other uses too. Not practical or useful and severely limited.
