I saw this through virtual Sundance earlier this year. This film really is excellent. The performances are top-notch, and I hope this gets in somewhere at the Oscars this year. Seriously, do NOT miss this one when it comes out.
If anyone gets the nomination(s), it'll be Aunjanue or John Earl Jelks. Aunjanue is a previous Supporting Actress Oscar nominee so she's on their radar and her role in The Nickel Boys is so small she could campaign for her role here instead in that category. And the Supporting Actor category is weak enough that with glowing reviews and a enough promotion, John could make the fifth and final slot, because right now it's looking like Samuel L. Jackson will sweep for The Piano Lesson, but not necessarily because of the performance but as a career win.
I love Black movies with aesthetically pleasing cinematography. The visuals reminds me of Barry Jenkins movies & also Melina Matsoukas's movie Queen & Slim. Black Art! 🎨 🍫
My biological father was a piece of shit and the dad in this movie trailer reminds me of him. My biological father was murdered in 2018 and because I was his oldest I was responsible for planning his funeral and talking to detectives. It was sooooooo hard to be there for a man that I hated so much. However it taught me forgiveness and humbled me like a mug. Life is a crazy crazy crazy rollercoaster of learning.
Just saw a screening of this last night-heavy, at times triggering, but powerful and amazing. The cinematography, the acting, and Titus Kaphar’s unique approach to the subject matter were all incredible. I appreciated how he used his perspective as a contemporary artist to craft a compelling story for his feature film debut. Excellent movie.
I stopped midway through the trailer; that was enough for me. The emotional relationship between the characters was enough for me to want to see it. Definitely on my list.
So grateful to see a film highlighting the freedom in aForgiveness …especially honored to see our back men leading roles and demonstrating the powerful acts in regard to this spiritual art… I pray that we ALL seek and be forgiven theres freedom in giving and receiving it🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
This looks amazing in both senses- meaning the story itself seems to be emotionally charged and worth watching for character development and connection to our shared humanity, but also: look at the cinematography, blocking, color palette, lighting, editing... films like this are my absolute fave- when you can freeze them at any moment and the still looks like a painting you could see in a museum. Movies are, first and foremost, a visual medium, and I love it when the people creating them are masters of the craft.
Honestly, I'm tired (and, I'm sure I'm not the only one) of seeing film trailers that are compromised of "the best" scenes in the movie, where the actual film is somewhat lackluster (or worse). This trailer, on the other hand, was wonderful. Sure, it made me interested in seeing the film...but, more importantly, it made me think - think about my past, think about how I've treated my father, think about the things I need to forgive my father, as well as others, for. These days, there are all sorts of movies...action, drama, fantasy, sci-fi...but, there are very few films that HONESTLY make people think. Even worse, most of Hollywood does nothing but rehash old 'things' into New films. It's INCREDIBLY refreshing to see "something new"...something that touches the heart, as well as the soul. Thank you. ❤
Sorry but most of ‘Hollywood’ is making original films, they’re indie films like this, the stuff no one sees in theatres anymore, or pays money to watch, so companies see no profit and invest more in IP, which makes up like 1% of all films but get all the marketing and attention. So sick of people dismissing the amazing artists still making amazing films like this but who are forgotten becuz no one bothers to do any research.
That was me with the Netflix movie Blonde, If you watch the trailer you would want to watch the film but when you watch the film you would think what the fuck did I just watch [in a bad way]
Forgive your father, please. And forgive yourself. I didn't speak to my father the last time I heard him in the background - drunk - while I was on the phone with my sister. He died shortly after. I cannot bear to delete his number from my phone. Don't wait too long like I did.
@@axucaroso I completely understand what you mean. 2.5yrs ago, while on a 3mo assignment driving nurses for FEMA, my mom & stepdad drove almost 400mi, just to have dinner with me on my birthday, and then drive back home the following morning (my wife at the time, who was only 150mi away, wouldn't even do that). The next morning, they drove home, after which she called to let me know they made it home safely. That was the last time I heard her voice. The next day, she had what the doctors initially thought was a minor stroke. Turned out, v or was anything but. The following day, I abandoned my job (but, not before calling my boss, and explaining the situation), and drove to their house. The next morning, my stepdad (not my actual dad, whom I was referring to in my initial comment) and I went to the hospital. That was the last time it saw her. We came home, and, while i6 was walking their dog, my stepdad got "the call".
Forgiveness is key. Though it may be easy, it is essential. Unforgiveness is a silent killer, a disease that spreads and kills the soul. We can forgive knowing that God forgives us daily. This film looks very interesting. Thank you for sharing 🥁
Just saw Exhibiting Forgiveness in theaters! It's beautiful and poetic filmmaking. Andre Holland, Andra Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, & Jelks are very moving
All of it!!! Oh my this is gonna be a relational soul breaker of a movie. The artistry, cinematography & performances are exceptional in this trailer. May all involved be given their recognition for it. Congrats!!

I absolutely love the use of Maya Angelou s poem in the beginning, not a giant poetry fan so I didn't realize it was her until I looked it up. Very cool way to open a very good looking movie trailer, I'm sure the film itself is fantastic
This movie was amazing and touch me in a way I can’t describe. Seeing it in theaters was an experience. If you can, please support this movie. To everyone one who had a hand in this movie, thank you for helping me, sharing with me and touching me on this journey called life.
I know so many who can relate to this. Black, white, red & yellow. I pray this movie reaches all it can and that it is used to help heal so many. God knows it's needed. My own child's father walked away 3 years ago now and he lives nearby but he never sees or talks to our child. You wouldn't know it if you knew my son but I know it's a pain that grows with time. I pray for healing and softened hearts for everyone involved in this kind of pain from abandonment . I pray for change to come, forgiveness and reconciliation. In Jesus name. Amen 🙏
Just saw this this weekend at Sidewalk Film Festival; great film! I really liked its depiction on how life impacts one’s art and its message on forgiveness (without sugarcoating these topics). André and Titus crafted a great picture!
It is beautiful to look at your new project. Your paintings are incredible, your more than talented. How to forget that Led talk in the darkness. Your voice still resonating!
I need to see this. Being estranged from your father is painful. I love where Andra Day is going with her career. That art is so vibrant. Reminds me of Terrance Osburne.
I was scanning for new films to watch this weekend and this was one of them. I was gonna watch it for André Holland but after this trailer I'm here for all of it. Roadside needs a better marketing department.
I have always struggled with anger , resentments, and unforgiveness. I have been working on it with a therapist and 12 step sponsor, and it is getting better. I was told that resentments only hurt you, not the wrongdoers. I had to write down my resentments and how they affected me to see the damage to motivate me to let go. I also had to write down my part in the resentments so I could see where i was in the wrong, make amends, change behaviors, build my character and reconcile relationships if appropriate. Obviously there are some situations you don't play a part like if you were abused. I really get into psychology and human behavior so I like to understand why people act how they do for example mental illness. It helps to have compassion on them and to wish them well. This is NOT justifying or condoning it just helps to understand, have compassion, and wish them well. Its also not good to get revenge, not only because of consequence but they will get their karma and there will be justice. If it motivates them to change and make anends be happy for them.
I’m about to show my sisters and nieces this trailer because we need to run and see this!!! Also, I dislike how they promote, sex, drugs, horror, and demonic films! But when it comes to love, family, forgiveness, and lessons, they get nothing!
Because so much of American cinema is controlled by people who lack spiritual depth. They can only lean on what they are full of. We need to produce our own stories. If you are a writer, make sure to enter contests, take film classes, do whatever you can to get your work out front. If you can tell a good story based on the complexities of Black culture, believe in it and get it out there

Why are these kinds of films underrated too much than other films like you can't learn anything from a Marvel film 😭 😭
😂🎉
🎉😂
In a word: Money
Light has come…BUT men love darkness (foolishness) rather than light.
That’s why these films are underrated.
