Hi Andrew! I found this very useful, I recently bought a POD GO and I was so disappointed because it doesn't perform anywhere near as well as I hoped it would. I didn't even realise it was possible to obtain awesome amp tones from pedals at such a cheap price like this Joyo pedal. The only issue for me is that I play through a Boss Katana. I wonder if that would be a problem with a pedal like this? I do have the Boss Katana MK II 50 watt which allows you to plug into the power amp. I do that for the POD GO . I'm wondering if I would plug this in power amp section of the boss katana or the input jack? Sorry if this is a real newbie question, all of this is quite complicated to me. I love the tones you're achieving here by the way! It sounds very satisfying. It's got that Hendrixian tone I'm particularly fond of as well as quite a few other tones considering it's just one pedal ! It does seem to be really versatile. 15:08 that Univibe tone is heavenly! nicely played
By the way, thank you for explaining everything in depth. I'm looking at getting a few of these pedals . I like the look and sound of the Tc Electronic Ampworks pedals. I'm thinking of buying the 550 Tc Electronic ampworks for high gain sounds ( i've tried several EVH amps and always loved the high gain sounds! ) and a 65 Combo deluxe for clean tones. They both sound lovely to me. I'm thinking i'll get those pedals and use them into my boss katana and just stop buying things for a while! Have you tried the TC Electronic ampworks pedals? What do you think about that? Am I wasting money when I could just use my Boss Katana and play around with the effects and tones it offers? I'm sick of playing in menus and just want to play my guitar. I'm not old I swear haha. I love the feeling of a real amp and it's addictive. I know it's not portable and not as convenient but for me I like to experience a real amp in the room and the tones I already achieve on the boss katana are very pleasing to my ears. Anyway, thank you so much in advance. If you do have a chance to reply i'll be very grateful! Your playing is brilliant ! :)
Still good in 2023 IMO. I have a stupid question: can you clarify where you had the pedals in the signal chain? You don't seem to clearly mention it. If the American Sound is an amp-in-a-box pedal, I would expect all other pedals to go in front of it. On a separate note, since you mention it at the beginning of the video, it would be great to add in the description the link to the Joyo Vs Dream 65 video. Thank you!
yes, drive would be in front, the slight problem is this have cab sim that cannont be turned off and no send return, so fx either go after cab or before amp
This pedal keeps coming back into my setup no matter how many times I’ve experimented with other things. For my money, the golden settings are the Voice between 9 o’clock and noon, the Drive just right of noon (this is the edge of breakup point with my Telecaster), and the EQ to taste. 9 o’clock on the Voice for Blackface Twin Reverb kind of scoop, 10 thirty-ish for Brownface mids. I don’t find past noon to be useful, because it really doesn’t sound very Tweedy, and beyond 3 o’clock is just ugly nasal mids.
Yeah also I’m playing on totally clean channel. I did get more ideas of use watching both your videos! I like your channel your right to point and thorough unlike some other guys that just dime everything and show there solo skills. Good job!
I'll have to try diming the voice. Usually when I dime the drive, I do not like the noise or the overdriven tone it produces. It is a great pedal for cleaner sounds though.
🇧🇷Excelente review.
Great demo, thanks! I have one of these and find it great as I play in church so gives an amp-like tone into the mixer. Question though; where is this best placed in a mono signal chain; i.e. before or after the wet effects?
I'd suggest experimenting with both before and after. I'd say most players place this before delays and reverbs. If you're getting any sort of breakup from the pedal, then before is probably going to be better. If you're running it fairly clean and getting all your grit from other pedals, then it's not going to matter too much.
As usual on these types of reviews and demos , no signal chain . This is huge on how anything sounds ! Can you please state the chain you used here ? Thanks 😊
Great job! Definitely a good one for the money. Very impressive. Joyo has a lot of affordable killer options for guitar pedals effect on the market right now.
Thank you so much, Andrew. Just a quick question: if I'm wanting to use the Joyo at a gig in lieu of a traditional amplifier (running the Joyo into the PA system), do I need to first route the Joyo into a DI box, and then from there into one of the XLR channels on the PA head? Or may I simply run a quarter-inch cable from the Joyo's output into one of the quarter-inch inputs on the PA head? THANKS!
Since an acoustic amplifier is technically a small PA, I wonder if an amp sim would do well to mellow out the harsher high frequencies. I planned on using with an Acoustasonic Jr for light drive/bluesy solo stuff for pop-up gigs.
Any problem with running one of these straight into an FRFR instead of going down the DI box route? we only play small pub/bar gigs using our own PA and I've been using a modeler into the FRFR for some time.
I have joyo AC tone. Is it okay to put it at the middle? Right between the overdrive and chorus? My chain is oveedrive - joyo actone- chrous- delay-reverb-mixer. Or should I put it at may last chain then mixer? Thank you
In the future, I think that best practice for transparency when reviewing the products of sponsors/affiliates is to disclose that information right away (like within the first minute) vs at tail-end of the intro. But either way thanks for the video.
You can totally use it with IRs! The built in speaker sim is just an EQ curve you can eq out and the three band EQ is super powerful. I'd definitely recommend it, I've been using an American Sound and a Nux Solid Studio with a couple Ownhammer IRs loaded as a DI solution for rehearsals and it sounds great. And with an ABY box on my board i can split the signal between my amp and the American Sound, super flexible rig.
I have one and it's really great for the most part. I actually run it through the effects loop in my amp. The only drawbacks of the pedal are: 1) it does get noisy when the gain is moved past the 3 o'clock mark. And 2) the gain itself does not sound good past 3 o'clock, it sounds "farty." But that's okay because I use other pedals for gain.
Hi there. Can you use two of these pre amp pedal side by side to have 2 channels ? As in clean and drive channel instead of using a drive pedal ? Please reply 😅
You think it's too mid-forward? I thought it was way too scooped even at noon. It's the wrong kind of frequency also IMO. They should have moved that knob up 3 or 4 hundred Hz for it to be useful, maybe with a smaller Q.
A great presentation, congrats. Just ordered! One question. I'm gonna use it for diy gigs just with my pedalboard. Do you need an active or a passive di? Thanks for the great video!
Sounds great IMO. I wonder if my opinion would change in a side-by-side comparison with the UAFX Woodrow. Watching videos separately, I'd say Woodrow isn't worth it compared to this tone.
good job! I want to buy one, but I only find a pedal at Thomann that looks the same but I don't know if it's the same, it's called American true tone by Harley benton... can you tell me something? thank you
Hey Andrew! Thanks so much for the video. I just picked this pedal up and it definitely is amazing for the price. Quick question about the adapter you were talking about at the beginning. In regards to running this through headphones, do you have any specific 3.55 mm to quarter inch adapters that are mono that you suggest? I've been having trouble finding ones that are not stereo and that will come out of both ears so didn't know if you had any in mind. Appreciate it!
Hey! Unfortunately I don't use an adapter for headphones, so I can't recommend anything. I'm sure something good is out there though. Sorry I can't be more help.
Okay, so the jack into the pedal, the pedal into the interface...and the interface plugs into what, your laptop? The sound in this video is coming from where, your laptop speakers?
The interface allows me to record in my DAW (Logic Pro). So you're hearing that recording. There's no sound coming through my computer or any speakers, it's silent in the room. But I could technically have it come through my monitors, headphones, or even the laptop speakers as you mentioned.
If you haven't already look up Rich Bischoff,he has a great post on it,playing and recording 3 parts using just the pedal. My board has one at all times
FWIW you don't need a DI box... just straight into the mixer, at least that's what I do. Not sure why everyone mentions a DI box or what benefits that would bring over just straight into the desk?
In many cases the mixer will be at the back of the venue. In smaller venues or at home, you likely won't need one. But for any larger venue you'll need a DI or Line Isolator to convert the signal to XLR and run it over a longer distance.
@@andrewclarkeguitar ah ok that makes sense. I run wireless from the American Sound into our mixer so that's never been an issue. Saves treading on the cable! Cheers for reply.
Could I ask a follow on question? If I did want to use a DI box (saw another review saying they can tame some of the harsh highs on the AS) then I've got a basic passive one used to use for keyboards. Would that be ok after the AS given that the AS is obviously powered, or would I need an active DI box? Thanks.
To chime in here, I've been using one for years to create all my guitar tones direct. I've had a lot of praise for the quality of my blues backing tracks (for which I am very grateful), it just works really well - you'd need to spend a lot more to improve on it. Def a sleeper, grab one before the price starts to hike!!
@@djjohnnyvicariousyes, you could use it that way. I go direct into an audio interface dry and use software effects - allows more scope to tweak the sound post recording.
Just ordered one it's on its way. I figured I've got my vox, my Marshall and now Fender like sound covered that's all 3. At this price it's about the same as a pack of cigarettes here in Australia, so another pedal into the heard. Hopefully I'm not developing a gear problem.
@@DTension if an old fart like me used one happily I wouldn't consider it very technologically advanced at all. I only watched to fill in time,no one could dissuade me from using it regardless. All the best
If going into an amp then using the amp speaker is fine....but going direct into DAW... Mine sounds 100% better when using an IR in the DAW....same with the other $40 amp in a box JOYO pedals...😁
@@alextempletYT I mean, I could see it being a fun project. But there's no necessity in it. I feel like the size and portability of the pedal is why it's so great.
yeah thats counterintuitive. kind of. if you actually bought an enclosure and put the AS guts in it with the controls mounted to the face so you could really use the controls. that would be bad ass. id make mine look like a custom build with my name on it. my own logo. you know? like SkiFsballs Audio, or SKIFSBALLS AMPLIFICATION? Thats catchy
I despise the breakup on my dream 65. Horrid. Especially with iems. Gonna try dialling in my American sound again with iems. The dream does sound good through front of house
That's interesting. When the Dream 6 came out I watched a lot of videos on it and was unhappy with some of the sounds while I thought it did well with others. I have the Joyo American and and generally very pleased with it except when you crank the gain, it does not sound so good at higher gain levels. But that's fine because I have other overdrive options. But recently I wanted to get a better sound from my Roland Micro Cube and the Joyo performed extremely well in that regard, it really sparked up the Micro Cube which is otherwise a bit dark and dull.
@@andrewclarkeguitar Thanks for answering my question. I have another one....did you say you could use it as a headphone amp by just plugging headphones into the out jack? That didn't work for me; I didn't get any sound out of either ear and I had the guitar plugged into the in jack and there was power to the joyo.

I don’t find past noon to be useful, because it really doesn’t sound very Tweedy, and beyond 3 o’clock is just ugly nasal mids.
excellent video. I will for sure get one. I am hoping to use it with a Zoom gnx3 as an amp and then just use the zoom as an efx pedal.
I use as overdrive pedal. I dime voice and drive with mid a bit over 12. Unbelievable sound and sustain for 40 bucks!!
Very cool! So in front of an amp? I had a tough time getting it to sound the way I wanted it to with my amp.
Yeah also I’m playing on totally clean channel. I did get more ideas of use watching both your videos! I like your channel your right to point and thorough unlike some other guys that just dime everything and show there solo skills. Good job!
The purple plexi model pedal was my go to marshall distortion for years. So good. All about the mids control 👍🏻
I'll have to try diming the voice. Usually when I dime the drive, I do not like the noise or the overdriven tone it produces. It is a great pedal for cleaner sounds though.
@@andrewclarkeguitar have heard to go into you fx return input helps if your having issues getting a good sound .
Awesome tone by the way , great pedal board setup dude ,killer sounds man!
Great video, thanks! Love your Suhr! My favourite guitarist Ian Thornley of Big Wreck plays Suhr guitars.
Thank you! I love Ian Thornley as well :)
I’ve been using my Joyo California sound as a DI/headphone amp/preamp stomp for 10 years, love it for Mesa sound at $40 instead of $3k
As usual on these types of reviews and demos , no signal chain . This is huge on how anything sounds ! Can you please state the chain you used here ? Thanks 😊
what’s the title of the song at 14:04
Can you do the Joyo British and Joyo AC tone too would be appreciated ❤
Excellent video! I wish I could like twice. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Great job! Definitely a good one for the money. Very impressive.
Joyo has a lot of affordable killer options for guitar pedals effect on the market right now.
Bought with affiliate! Thanks for the demo
Hey! I really appreciate that. Thank you 🙏🏻
You should take a look at the AC Tone from them as well, it’s a stellar pedal!
Yes! I've heard great things. Will probably pick one up :)
THANKS!
You'll likely need to use a DI Box of some sort.
Since an acoustic amplifier is technically a small PA, I wonder if an amp sim would do well to mellow out the harsher high frequencies. I planned on using with an Acoustasonic Jr for light drive/bluesy solo stuff for pop-up gigs.
This is also a great preamp in, straight into the return of an amp.
Excellent, succinct information and demo!
Any problem with running one of these straight into an FRFR instead of going down the DI box route? we only play small pub/bar gigs using our own PA and I've been using a modeler into the FRFR for some time.
I saw a guy use this as a bass di and it actually sounded pretty good
Honestly, I can see it working pretty well for that.
Thank you so much for this video! I definitely needed it as I'm putting together my own ampless pedal board. Bless up brother!
You're very welcome!
And with an ABY box on my board i can split the signal between my amp and the American Sound, super flexible rig.
how should you eq it to cancel out the cab sim? and would it be with the knobs or with an eq pedal before/after in the chain?
I have one and it's really great for the most part. I actually run it through the effects loop in my amp.
The only drawbacks of the pedal are: 1) it does get noisy when the gain is moved past the 3 o'clock mark. And 2) the gain itself does not sound good past 3 o'clock, it sounds "farty." But that's okay because I use other pedals for gain.
For sure! I don’t have an effects loop on my amp so I can’t try that unfortunately.
It would make difference if you add a mooer micro di at the end of the chain
Hi there. Can you use two of these pre amp pedal side by side to have 2 channels ? As in clean and drive channel instead of using a drive pedal ? Please reply 😅
Muy excelente review, tocas muy bien la guitarra 🎸
Can I plug straight into a 12 cab?
You think it's too mid-forward? I thought it was way too scooped even at noon. It's the wrong kind of frequency also IMO. They should have moved that knob up 3 or 4 hundred Hz for it to be useful, maybe with a smaller Q.
Just ordered it for my bass off AliExpress Cyber Monday sale for $29 here in Thailand. A pretty great Sansamp clone for under $30? No brainer!
It's a copy of the Tech21 SansAmp Blonde. I use the user manual from Tech 21 with my American Sound pedal. It's very handy.
Could you plug this into another amp?
A great presentation, congrats. Just ordered! One question. I'm gonna use it for diy gigs just with my pedalboard. Do you need an active or a passive di? Thanks for the great video!
passive
Sounds great IMO. I wonder if my opinion would change in a side-by-side comparison with the UAFX Woodrow. Watching videos separately, I'd say Woodrow isn't worth it compared to this tone.
good job! I want to buy one, but I only find a pedal at Thomann that looks the same but I don't know if it's the same, it's called American true tone by Harley benton... can you tell me something? thank you
They’re the same pedal! Just a rebranding. But it works and sounds the same 😊
Is the HORSE branded one the same..?
This pedal is great for those cleaner Fender Twin sounds.
@@andrewclarkeguitar All good man!
I'd love to see you do this video with the AC Tone.
Yes! Plan on doing that at some point :)
the speakers are kinda small...i couldnt hear it when i tried to use it as an amp..
Whoa. Cool. Thanks.
Thanks dude. I've been considering this pedal since 2021, and now i had a brighter knowledge from this channel. Keep it up the good work!!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
If you haven't already look up Rich Bischoff,he has a great post on it,playing and recording 3 parts using just the pedal. My board has one at all times
Any suggestions for the joyo A.S pedal
For best set up for a clean amp like a Fender chorus m80 2x12. It has an effects loop too. Cheers.
For live performances, do you recommend using it with a passive or an active DI box?
A passive DI box is what you'd usually use here.
Thanks Andrew!@@andrewclarkeguitar
I Bought this pedal and you helped find the settings, thanks Andrew!
Please, can I use it before my ambient pedals (as Delay and Reverb)?
Nice! You should be able to do that, yes :)
Can I run this Into the power amp section of a Katana??
is the cab simulator bypassed when the pedal is switched off?
Thanks.

Hello. Does anybody have the info for mod this pedal to make the cab simulation on/off?
i like it but it's noisy, i can sometimes get a radio channel through it.
I was getting the radio channel in mine as well from time to time.
Im only going to use this for cleans. Is other Joyo Pre Amp Better For Cleans? Like The California or Actone? Thanks
This excels at cleans over everything else, IMO. I only own this pedal though, not the others.
guys please answer this...when I plug this in to my amps clean tone, i also can use the effects on amp right?like delay reverb?
You should still be able to, yes!
Can this pedal goes straight to pc? Does it have usb connection
@@aryoadhitomono, you will still need an A/I to use it.
@@ButternoteBackingTracks just curious would this be in the end of the signal chain with all the other pedals before it?
@@djjohnnyvicariousyes, you could use it that way. I go direct into an audio interface dry and use software effects - allows more scope to tweak the sound post recording.
GTA TBOGT inspired rhythm at 7:00
How can i use this in some way to drive a 16 ohm cabinet. Is there any inexpensive power amp device that will work with this and the cab
Mooer makes a mini pedal power amp called the baby bomb
Just ordered one it's on its way. I figured I've got my vox, my Marshall and now Fender like sound covered that's all 3. At this price it's about the same as a pack of cigarettes here in Australia, so another pedal into the heard. Hopefully I'm not developing a gear problem.
Hold on. I go into an amp with it and so do a lot of people I've spoken to. It works fine into the front of an amp.
Sure does, even makes a clean katana palatable. I run straight into all of my amps
@@brucehayes7251 yeah I don't feel like it's a "cab sim" in the way we think of it in 2023. Thanks for the reply.
@@DTension if an old fart like me used one happily I wouldn't consider it very technologically advanced at all. I only watched to fill in time,no one could dissuade me from using it regardless. All the best
I have a harbinger speaker, can i run this pedal through that speaker because speaker has an amp?
I don't see why not!
I hear this is better plugged into effects loop.
If going into an amp then using the amp speaker is fine....but going direct into DAW... Mine sounds 100% better when using an IR in the DAW....same with the other $40 amp in a box JOYO pedals...😁
Interesting! I did not like it with my IRs (celestion ones). Felt overly filtered. Maybe just needs more tweaking on my part. :)
Which IR pack do you use
I want to strip this pedal down and make a housing that looks just like a regular amp for this pedal. I think that'd be so badass.
Do it!
@andrewclarkeguitar I mean is that dumb? Like am I defeating the purpose of the pedal or am I just getting a great amp for 40 bucks?
@@alextempletYT I mean, I could see it being a fun project. But there's no necessity in it. I feel like the size and portability of the pedal is why it's so great.
yeah thats counterintuitive. kind of. if you actually bought an enclosure and put the AS guts in it with the controls mounted to the face so you could really use the controls. that would be bad ass. id make mine look like a custom build with my name on it. my own logo. you know? like SkiFsballs Audio,
or SKIFSBALLS AMPLIFICATION? Thats catchy
Yes it can.
Do I need a load box with IR Cab with this pedal ?
No, you don't. This can go directly into a mixer or audio interface.
Does anyone find it noisy? I have it at the end of my chain and it's giving me some noise when kicked on. Anyone?
Does this pedal have usb connection to record srraight to pc
Unfortunately, it doesn’t. You’ll need an audio interface to get the signal into your computer.
@@andrewclarkeguitarthank you, have beeb buying this and using this pedal straight to UI (M Track Solo) and it sound pretty decent
I have this and the TECH 21 Blonde. NO contest. The tech 21 Blonde is superior.
I almost feel like you're doing your own take on ASL.
Also love that you have expensive mega classy UA pedals and you bothered to demo this. Speaks volumes for 40 clam Joyo.
Damn this cat got some nice licks.
Appreciate that, my friend!
Do you put the compressor after the joyo or before?
I prefer the compressor before the joyo.
@@andrewclarkeguitar thanks!
This or uafx lion?
According to JOYO (see their website) ► "American Sound reproduces the sound of a Fender 57 Deluxe amp" Not the Tweed.
Correct me if I’m wrong but in 1957, the Fender Deluxe was a tweed amplifier.
