Ive literally played the game almost my whole life, I started playing semi competitively around 2015, but it makes me so happy that we're still bringing in new players. This game has changed my life, ive met some of my best friends through this game, its truly one of a kind. Even if its not this game specifically, i hope everybody finds their "melee"
Must be dope joining and having so many dope sets to watch for the first time. So much content to binge plus better learning tools than ever. I joined in 2016 and had to learn a ton of the game from watching vods and labbing solo because online netcode was still bad and my local good players didnt care as much about the game anymore. Yall got it very good with rollback and uncle punch training mode so take advantage please

- All the way back then , Mang0 have played against Ken , Azen , Chudat , and more of the Melee old school - Mang0 was the first player to stop Mew2king's reign back on 2007/08 - Mang0 defended the entire North American continent against the titan Armada - Mang0 carried the Melee narrative on the summer of Smash , which culminated in EVO 2014 and the bonus of The Big House 4 - When we all thought he would quit the game after 2015 , he decided to kept playing and gave us the more amazing tournaments performance - He was there trying to stop Armada's reign with some big wins such as The Big House 6 and Royal Flush 2017 - When Armada quit , Mang0 said to the Melee community "Daddy is still here" and he would be there for all of us - When we all thought he was washed and would never be the same old Mang0 , he gave one of the best tournaments runs of all time , The Big House 9 - Currently Mang0 is the only God left whose there challenging Zain , and it goes back and fourth. Mang0 is the only player in Melee history that have play against all the best players on "their peak". The guy has have his ups and down , but he is always there !
I'm far from being a Mang0 fanboy like most melee fans seem to be lol, but, two things are undeniable: Mang0 is the protagonist of Melee and he is undoubtfully the GOAT. He's been no.1 or 2 during every era of melee. He pushes the narrative forward, sometimes as the rival to the top player, sometimes as the top player, but he's always in the picture.

Genesis 7 is arguably the best Smash Tourney of all time, between what was discussed here and Marss’ insane run. In both games you had this insane underdog story and a potential feeling of passing the torch(obv we have no idea what’s going to happen with Ultimate but that’s not relevant to the point of the tourney itself)
When I watch stuff like this I remember why I have played this game for 4 years and counting. Has changed my life so much and the constant desire to chase that freedom of expression is maybe just the most amazing part of this game. The greatest competitive experience of all time and probably will be years down the line. Thanks for making this video.

Hbox really has some great popoffs. That Lower Tier City 7 popoff was amazing. So much motion, such a range of emotions, just having it there gives such a momentum to the whole sequence.
MELEE IS SICK. Brawl and Smash 4 may have amazing stories to be told, but these games are nothing compared to Melee which stood the test of time after two decades. While I really do love the Brawl and Smash 4 storylines (especially the Smash 4 rivals documentary which perfectly sums up Smash 4 beautifully), they unfortunately don`t feel the same after what infamously happened back in summer of last year.
Melee is proof that a free-flowing, pseudo-limitless system with a nigh limitless skill gap is what humans like. It is all a microcosm of life! You can do anything and get as good at anything as you want! Atleast in a dream scenario. Expression through competition!

really great video film flux, you did a really good job at showing off zain, mango and hungrybox. one thing I think this video could've done better is show off the other personalities in the scene, cody, s2j and leffen turned into just people with winning/losing records with other players instead of actual personalities. I think melee's biggest strength as an esport is the narratives and personalities. amazing video though, keep up the good work.
Hey now, I gave s2j a whole comedic sequence ;) At one point I was going to deep dive into every player I chose, but by the time I really solidified my outline, I was worried the video would be too long. So I reeaaallly short changed players, just to give non Melee fans an idea of who players were. I also skipped a bunch of players too ... which is a shame. Leffen's story is so layered, it could be a video all on its own.

Learning the intricacies of competitive Smash is legitimately one of my proudest achievements, even if the highest level I ever actually competed at was card shops in my local area. I won a PS4 from it one time.
@@FilmFlux Not anymore. I only play video games an hour or two a week now. The card shop that held bi-monthly tournaments near me closed down at the beginning of 2019 and my work schedule prevents me from being able to drive the 30 minutes to an hour required to go to the larger card shops. A lot of them have dropped Melee/Project M for the new Smash to my knowledge anyway because there’s more demand for it. They still have Melee nights every so often but I can never find the time to make it down there. Getting old sucks, don’t do it.
It's too late for me. I transitioned into just playing a game on my mobile phone, and now I don't even do that. I think that's in part why I make and watch videos like this. I enjoy remembering.
I feel like calling a downair a downsmash was just a careless error (I certainly trust you understand the basics of the game), but just fyi, what you showed your fox doing wasn't dashdancing, it was just a broader use of dash-based mindgames (we'd call it a bait nowadays, but so much fell under the umbrella term "mindgames" until like 2010 or so). Dashdancing is a technique where you repeatedly cancel your dash animation in the opposite direction while not even moving. It was possible in smash64 but less useful than in melee because there was an unskippable turnaround animation (except for falcon). In Melee it's used to make your opponent confused as to whether you are about to approach or retreat (since you can do either instantaneously), so it's kind of also a dash-based mindgame technique but it's quite a bit more advanced than what you showed because it requires quite precise timing (and it'd be classified as more of a mixup than a bait). You seem like a really really involved spectator who did a lot of great research from a spectator's perspective, and you made a great video, but you did not independently discover dashdancing in 1999 :P
Just started playing melee more seriously when slippi became an option last year, beautiful documentary showing that there really is so much more melee to be played, and just how badly I want to be here for it.

It's a bit basic for me as I already know all this, but I can't wait to use this to explain the basics of melee to my friends without just going to the old smash doc
it occurs to me that corona happened at just the right time for melee. i think back to the old days, and the community prided itself on its “grassroots” identity, which was obviously totally built around player passion and dedication to traveling to LAN events. if corona happened any sooner than it did, the technology might not have been there for the game and it could have spelled a new dark age for us. i have no doubt the community would have survived and come back swinging, but we have been fortunate that if anything, melee has only exploded even more in the slippi era. another “happy accident”.
No way!!! 10:22 Fucking love that song! The track for 'Las Vegas' on some game for the SNES called 'Top Gear' (either I'm blind or it's not listed in the description lol). Randomly had it as a kid so it's so damn nostalgic to me. Boring gameplay but god tier soundtrack (for what little of one it had). Learning the intricacies of competitive Smash is legitimately one of my proudest achievements, even if the highest level I ever actually competed at was card shops in my local area. I won a PS4 from it one time.
That's awesome. Not many people can say they've won anything from competitive play, let alone something like a PS4. Are you still playing?
@@FilmFlux Not anymore. I only play video games an hour or two a week now. The card shop that held bi-monthly tournaments near me closed down at the beginning of 2019 and my work schedule prevents me from being able to drive the 30 minutes to an hour required to go to the larger card shops. A lot of them have dropped Melee/Project M for the new Smash to my knowledge anyway because there’s more demand for it. They still have Melee nights every so often but I can never find the time to make it down there. Getting old sucks, don’t do it.
It's too late for me. I transitioned into just playing a game on my mobile phone, and now I don't even do that. I think that's in part why I make and watch videos like this. I enjoy remembering.

I feel like calling a downair a downsmash was just a careless error (I certainly trust you understand the basics of the game), but just fyi, what you showed your fox doing wasn't dashdancing, it was just a broader use of dash-based mindgames (we'd call it a bait nowadays, but so much fell under the umbrella term "mindgames" until like 2010 or so).
Dashdancing is a technique where you repeatedly cancel your dash animation in the opposite direction while not even moving. It was possible in smash64 but less useful than in melee because there was an unskippable turnaround animation (except for falcon). In Melee it's used to make your opponent confused as to whether you are about to approach or retreat (since you can do either instantaneously), so it's kind of also a dash-based mindgame technique but it's quite a bit more advanced than what you showed because it requires quite precise timing (and it'd be classified as more of a mixup than a bait).
You seem like a really really involved spectator who did a lot of great research from a spectator's perspective, and you made a great video, but you did not independently discover dashdancing in 1999 :P

it occurs to me that corona happened at just the right time for melee. i think back to the old days, and the community prided itself on its “grassroots” identity, which was obviously totally built around player passion and dedication to traveling to LAN events. if corona happened any sooner than it did, the technology might not have been there for the game and it could have spelled a new dark age for us. i have no doubt the community would have survived and come back swinging, but we have been fortunate that if anything, melee has only exploded even more in the slippi era. another “happy accident”.

Randomly had it as a kid so it's so damn nostalgic to me. Boring gameplay but god tier soundtrack (for what little of one it had). Last time I heard this song was a channel called SummoningSalt right before he got big- I'll consider that a good omen ;D
