- Ke Huy Quan -- best known for his appearances in the 1980s Steven Spielberg productions of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (1984) as Harrison Ford's sidekick 'Short Round' and "The Goonies" (1985) as inventor 'Richard "Data" Wang' -- reminisces about his career, shares behind-the-scenes stories and answers fan questions at his 2019 Niagara Falls Comic Con Q&A panel.
Jonathan Luke Ke Huy Quan (born August 20th, 1971) is a Vietnamese-born American actor and stunt choreographer of Chinese descent who became a child actor at age 12 opposite Harrison Ford in "Temple of Doom." In 1985, he co-starred in "The Goonies" as a member of the eponymous group of children. He played a pickpocket orphan in the 1986 Taiwanese movie "It Takes a Thief." In 1987, he appeared in the Japanese movie "Passengers" with the Japanese idol singer Honda Minako. He played Sam on the short-lived TV series "Together We Stand" (1986-1987) and played Jasper Kwong in the sitcom "Head of the Class" from 1989 to 1991. He also starred in the movie "Breathing Fire" (1991) and had a small role in "Encino Man" (1992). He played the starring role in the 1993 Mandarin language TV show "The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter" which ran for forty episodes. He also starred in the 1996 Hong Kong/Vietnam collaboration movie "Red Pirate." He last appeared onscreen in the 2002 Hong Kong movie "Second Time Around" alongside Ekin Cheng and Cecilia Cheung.
"Everything Everywhere All at Once" is a 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo and Jonathan Wang. It follows Evelyn Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn, with Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis in supporting roles. The New York Times called the film a "swirl of genre anarchy" with elements of surreal comedy, science fiction, fantasy, martial arts films, and animation.
"The Goonies" is a 1985 American adventure comedy film that became a cult classic. It is centered on a band of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon who attempt to save their homes from demolition, and in so doing, discover an old Spanish map that leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy -- a legendary 17th-century pirate. They are continuously chased by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves. In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

Anyone hear after his Oscar win? So happy to see his career having a bright future after learning he had waited for his phone to ring for 20 years.
So cool to see this in mid 2023, when he''s made a huge, and hugely improbable, comeback as an actor and is considered to be a likely Oscar nominee. He's not doing obscure comicons now--he's on every major and minor talk show on TV. He just had a reunion with Harrison Ford at some Disney event --first time they've seen each other in 35+ years. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. I was struck by how often he said "I was lucky" or "I was fortunate."
Oscar winner now
Seeing him win Best Supporting Actor had me and most of my family get red eyes
He should be in Indiana Jones 5.
He should return
Yes!
@@simoliz03 I think his voice never changed. He should be in Indy 5
Agreed. They messed up Indy 4 by adding dumb new characters and not bringing back old ones, besides Marion, among other issues. I'd rather see an adult Short Round sidekick any day of the week if they make another one.
According to the Indy lost files, he becomes an archaeologist and hunts down the peacock eye (the diamond that Indy loses in temple of doom). I wouldn't mind Him and Indy making a return in Indy 5, probably in Communist China were Mao has taken over. During that era there was a cultural revolution where the Communists destroyed a lot of Ancient Chinese antiquities.
He’s been adorable his entire life
He's now almost 10 years older than Harrison Ford in Temple of Doom.
stop
@@FirstLast-uz6eq sad but true
😢😢
Ke had no business making me bawl my eyes out 😭
Golden Globe Winner!
He never mentioned that he was on the TV show "Head of the Class" as the character Jasper. I still remember seeing him and yelling "Hey wow, its Data!"
Short Round is awesome
TheSoloTrooper Why they call him that?
He sure is!
So awesome in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
I loved Ke Huy Quan as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, one of my favorite of all the Indiana Jones films, and Richard "Data" Wang in The Goonies (one of my favorite 1985 movies which my mother also loves). He was just too damn cute as a kid. Too bad once they grow up, they're not so cute anymore. I recall watching all three of the Indiana Jones film with my mother on DVD on the Friday when I had my wisdom teeth removed. It was a good way to recuperate while eating soft food. Ke Huy Quan FOREVER!
Temple of doom was one of my favorite movies growing up. Short round was such a badass.
How has this guy not been in more Indiana Jones movies?! He should be in Indy 5!
He should play a scientist on Stranger Things.
Make sense Sean Astin was Bob and Ke Huy Quan should be in that show
I was just thinking he should play a sort of Marcus Brody surrogate Archaeology professor - who also turns out to be a grown up Short Round - in Indiana Jones 5.
DUDE, that would be awesome! Here’s hoping that happens for Stranger Things Season 5…
“You call him Dr Jones doll”
Fortune and glory, kid
My professional name.
Hang on lady we going for ride 😆😆😆
Hold on to your potato.
@@davidkanengieter "YOU CHEAT DOCTOR JONES! YOU TAKE FOUR CARDS!!!!"
Wow! I have grown up with Ke Huy Quan. What a smashing guy. And what a performance in those films!!! Love him to bits.
Really look to see this guy, legendary
He is my favorite Goonie and Ke is so funny.
God damn it he should have been in Indy 4!
Great to hear he was really excited about the movie business even before his big comeback in 2022. I really don't think it's that hard to make a Goonies 2. I have a lot of ideas for it. I hope his recent success helps get the ball rolling on it.
Had you told Ke back then that in 2023, he'd be winning the SAG, Golden Globe and Independent Award and be Oscar nominated... he probably wouldn't believe it?!
Please Quan!!! INDY 5!!!! We love short round and love you.
his voice has not changed. LOL :p
That is so funny. I think after Goonies I never heard about him again. I still have his young face in my mind. This interview is the first time that I see him as an adult. That´s so weird/strange/funny. Anyway... He looks a REALLY NICE GUY. Type of person that you can spend hours of talking. Not only because of his history but, I don't know, it looks nice to talk to him.
I agree! He does seem like the type who you can talk to for hours!
His voice sounds similar even as an adult
He was in the awful Encino Man.
@@sifugurusensei opinions differ. :p "I'll be back." eats a frog.
Fernando Goya he just got cast with Crazy Rich Asians Michelle something or other for a new ROM COM Science Fiction series.
1:16 "Goonies never say die, right?"
Me: suddenly remembers to upvote video.
such a humble guy
Wish they’d used him in Crystal Skull instead of Shia!
That what be cool hehe!
Oh, that's right!
OKIE DOKIE DOCTA JONES!!’ HOLD ON TO YO POTATOES
would've been perfect. I guess they needed a reason to bring Karen Allen back into the plot but it was extremely poor casting. A failed attempt by Hollywood to promote a terrible actor who lucked into being cast as the main character of a popular franchise that didn't need him to succeed. This happens way too often for my liking. It was obvious from the first Transformers that he wasn't going to be the next big thing.
nah, Shia was good
He is cool😂😂😂👍👍👍he really deserves a cameo...that would be be very funny....his voice has not changed...it would be iconic
Great acting for a cute kid back then, and to be in iconic movies ,glad to see he's doing well😉👌
Goonies forever!
Congrats n Love You Ke !!!
Ke Huy Quan went to Castelar Elementary school in Chinatown LA? Wow
Amazing how his voice isn’t too different today.
i wrote a goonies 2 when i was at high school, i still remember the whole story i wrote
Tell me more
LEGEND
Ke Huy Quan we need you to save the Indiana Jones franchise!
Didn't knew Ke Huy Quan, the kid from Goonies and Indiana Jones is my name brother (Same name Huy). From Vietnam too. And escape from Vietnam in boats too, back in those days :)
Xuan Huy Ngo You are older brother?
Huy is quite a common Vietnamese name no? A lot of Vietnamese and Chinese-Vietnamese who immigrated to North America in the early '80s were boatpeople. I was one too. Instead of landing in Hong Kong, my family landed in Malaysia.
So sweet
It would be good if he is the next indy film, would be nice to know what happened to short round?.
Short Round(Qe Huy Kuan) the Best Indy sidekick. Can fight.should have been in Crystal Skull instead of shia leboeuf!
I think he should be in a new indy movie even if he's just a professor that works in Dr Jones department.
Totally!
I love him 😊
He looks like 30 years old, still young holy cow.
He really does
Hey lady , You call him dr Jones .
Here is my idea for what should be the final Indiana Jones movie:
Indiana Jones is retired from his adventures. He's living with his wife Marion and Mutt.
But then there is news that someone is illegal selling extremely rare Chinese artifacts to the Triad on the black market
and they are using the alias "Indiana Jones". Indiana and Mutt go to China to investigate the fraud.
But to Indiana's surprise it turns out the fake Indiana Jones is actually his old friend...yes you guessed it Short Round.
Indiana heard that Short Round died in a horrible paramotor accident but in truth Short Round simply faked his death
because the Chinese Communists, the Chinese Triad, the Russian Mob, and even the American FBI are all looking for a particular mystical Chinese artifact and Short Round has a map or something. Short Round had been creating perfect forgeries of rare Chinese artifacts and he purposely used the name Indiana Jones so that Indiana could help him. However since Indiana is too old it's up to Mutt and Short Round to find the mystical Chinese artifact and save the day.
There is just one problem....they hate each other's guts. Will Indy be able to get these two numb skulls to see eye to eye
and prevent the powerful and deadly mystical Chinese artifact from falling into the wrong hands?
Especially the hands of Lao Che The Second played by none other than the legend himself...Jackie Chan.
I think something along those lines would make for a totally awesome finale to Indiana Jones.
Temple of Doom was chronological the first in the Indiana Jones movies and it starts off in China and
it would be great to bring it back there. I don't really know what the artifact would be because I admit I'm not
an expert on that kind of stuff (maybe something from Journey to the West but I have actually not read it. I just know it influenced Dragon Ball ).
I think it would be cool to have Jackie Chan play a villain and on top of that being the son of the notorious gangster Lao Che.
Obviously it doesn't have to be Jackie Chan. There are a lot of great Chinese actors. I just think he is a great actor.
But mostly while the movie would be the final Indiana Jones movie it would really be a Short Round and Mutt movie
where there is a lot of distrust between the two but they become allies at the end. Indiana Jones would be like how Henry Jones Senior (played by Sean Connery) was in the Last Crusade. Except way more grumpy.
Funny funny doctor jones
Reminder for cons don’t use up the whole q and a with questions from the host
Is there this year’s comic con
Why wasn’t he in the movie story after the second movie
Indy!!!!
he just got cast with Crazy Rich Asians Michelle something or other for a new ROM COM Science Fiction series.
Idk why, but Ke Huy Quan reminds me of Jackie Chan
After seeing his moves in Everything Everywhere All At Once. You bet he can be Jackie Chan’s doppelgänger(even looks like him). The stunts reminded much of Jackie’s past movies.
He looks like him.
He no nuts, he crazy
Shorty
Dahktah Jones. Hold on ta yah potatoes
Indy 5 is disaster. Ford is too old. A reunion will never happen.
Why does is sound like a nasally Jewish guy?

Its obvious this guy is an imposter and not the real kid actor, the guy next to him is helping to sell the fake story that this audience and everyone else here believes. This kid died tragically a long time ago and went down the same road as the little blonde girl from the Poltergeist movies......FACT!

You're right. I heard he came back to life 2 months later and would go on to win an Oscar 38 years later.
