Jacob, who is currently 25 years old, was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 23. He is the youngest person in West Virginia living with ALS. Jacob's condition is caused by a FUS gene mutation, which is known to be a highly aggressive form of ALS. Typically, those with this genetic version have a life expectancy of 1 to 3 years. However, Jacob's story took a hopeful turn when he participated in a clinical trial at The Ohio State University in May of last year. The university is at the forefront of developing innovative treatments that specifically target these gene mutations.
