    My HLG Settings: HLG2 - Color Mode 709
    a7iii footage is also only 8bit, so the colors tend to break when doing HEAVY color grading!
    What's your favorite picture profile? COMMENT BELOW!

      I only bought it last week and have been testing the colour profiles, I really love the base iso 100 of the hlg, and I love that it looks almost perfect straight out of camera, those colours pop easily, I made a simple correction lut for it and editing with it is a blast! So after a fair amount of testing in different conditions I feel hlg is my favourite!

      Using HLG3 here, with a manual knee at 80%, slope at +2 and detail at -7.
      That's the closest to a RED Gemini and BM Pocket 4K.
      Although both the Pocket 4K and Gemini still destroy the A73 in pure image quality, texture, colors, dynamic range, low light, codec etc...

      I'm using HLG 2 for a few weeks now, its good, but as you said, 8 bit cant handle much correction in post so get your exposures and colors right , in camera

    By our experience shooting with the a7III since last year, we find out that there’s two cases:
    - When working on a project with a tight deadline we use HLG (mainly HLG2), as this gamma has a good compromise between dynamic range and colors accuracy out of the camera.
    That said it’s definitely not meant to be a PP to have heavy color grading processing if any as the colors will unfortunately break very quickly with lots of noise and artifacts, applying gamma curve correction to the recorded images worsens the image condition further by processing already deteriorated images of the compression codec. Most of LUTs will absolutely destroy the image quality of HLG gamma, we really don’t use any.
    - When working on a project with ample time for post-production, we record an image that is as flat as possible allowing to process images more effectively being possible to push a bit more the color grading. S-Log2 or S-Log3 are the obvious choice but Cine 2 is in some cases a good option.
    In low light conditions, we tend to use our custom PP with adjusted black level and black gamma to get a clean image with no noise. Shooting in 4K is also essential in low light to get better results, 1080p will have noticeably more noise with the exact same settings and PP.
    That’s about it, all that we found out working with the a7III since a year ago, shooting almost daily with it professionally.
    Greetings from Lisbon

    • @DennisSchmitz
      @DennisSchmitz 5 лет назад

      In Premiere, FCPX and Davinci Resolve.
      They all do an HLG to Rec709 gamma conversion internally.

    • @ChristopherOdd
      @ChristopherOdd 5 лет назад

      Dennis Schmitz when you say internally, does that mean that you don’t need to actually apply a lut?

    • @overlit5597
      @overlit5597 5 лет назад +1

      @@ChristopherOdd The conversion to rec709 is a LUT, just one that is included in the software (you can also convert it to Rec709 directly onto the timeline before you even get to the color grading, using Davinci color management. Not sure about other programs... Actually that's probably what he meant "internally").
      LUTs that, for example, you buy from creators on youtube usually bypass the conversion to Rec709 for a more "cinematic" or creative look. The whole point of Rec709 is to have standard, realistic looking colors, and you can skip that and apply a custom LUT if you're going for a very different look.
