Here in the UK it's Pelting down with Rain (has been for the last 4 days) it's cold and Miserable, but Pete, Hillarie, Patty, & Orden et al, have once again enriched Sunday by injecting some much needed sunshine into our Lives, but well deserved adulation aside, can we just stop for a moment and Appreciate the absolutely deep and extensive wealth of knowledge that Pete has and readily shares with us, Farming isn't just an industry, but a way of life that directly affects the society it serves, we all need and Appreciate Farmers like Pete who tirelessly work to bring us the food we Eat, God bless & many thanks to you all. ❤

I enjoy your analysis according to Pete of things you do. Growing up on a small dairy farm we used corn stalks, wheat straw, sawdust and one you did not mention, soybean stubble. My thoughts, hated straw. While it does provide a fluffy surface for the animals to bed down into the surface of the stalk has what seemed to me as a waxy coating that prevented the absorption of any liquids and the mess came through fast. Corn stalks are a nice bedding material, we used a flail chopper to “harvest” them and forage boxes for distribution. If you are going to bale them with your machine be prepared for accelerated wear. The material has to be windrowed and unlike hay or wheat there is not a lot of material to keep what you are harvesting from contacting the soil and it really wears balers. Soybean straw was great for moisture absorption, way better than wheat straw. But it really aggravated my asthma and cleaning pens bedded with it was the worst, it really stuck together. Sawdust was great, is soaked up moisture, did not bother my lungs, and removing from the barn after use was comparable to getting a bucket load of dirt. It did not stick together like straw or bean stubble. The thing about sawdust is you have a much higher carbon content than that of any other materials. You will likely notice more break down when pulling it out of the barn and possibly less thickness to the pack because it is less bulky, if that concerns you.
Personally as with everything the absolute best is a mixture of the materials. The years we would use corn stalks to stretch the sawdust because inventory was low, well pulling it out was a bit tougher, but the material coming out seemed like it gave more oomph to the crops. Personally would encourage you to try a mixture of available options and see how they fit for you and your operation. But don’t discount the soybean straw option, might be able to get someone to windrow a couple acres next fall and you could bale them up easily to see how you like it.

I would love to see someone write a children's book about your farm and farming with all animal characters. I think my favorite character would either be Horton, Patty, or the group of nameless chickens in the chicken bus.

Another great video to have my morning coffee and start my day! Ugh! we too close to see that snow. (western Ma) most times what you get comes down the pike to us!. But not so far? which is ok by me. I can wait!. at 81 not too much I do outside anymore. As for the bedding Pack I think its a great idea. Back in the 60's I was a Hay/Straw Dealer. I had mostly Horse/Stables. but also had few Dairy Farms in Ct. and even a pig farm out in Montauk LI. And back then straw was the predominant bedding material. mostly wheat Straw. but then in the 70's along came Wood shavings. Pine cedar and it was packed in paper bundles. and that pretty much took over the straw market. even to this day it's still a dominant sellar. near the tail end of my hay dealership the only time I sold straw was for a New Foal. Thanks for another enoyable coffee break Pete and Hillary have a good day and God Speed. ECF

Great video. Great looking steaks. I like your feeding and fertilizing strategy that creates a warm bed while composting. Happy cows for sure.
