Please don’t apologise for again featuring the Royal Ballet. I could happily watch them perform anything and everything, especially Nela and Vadim. Did you spot that Alexander Campbell retired last night after performing Manon? Another wonderful RB dancer.

This pdd is so beautiful and feels like an open dialogue almost. It's genuine, not rushed, you can feel the affection (both in music and through dancer's performance) yet it's gentle and light. Thank you for opening this one for me, really enjoyed it! Marianela and Vadim are both phenomenal dancers, amazed every time.

Thank you for the video, it really helped my understanding of the pas-de-deux. I don’t have suggestions for pieces but I’d love to hear your commentary on some of the new(ish) young principals at the Royal ballet. Marcelino Sambé and Myara Magri for example. Do you think they have the potential to become the next ‘Vadim and Marianela’?

Underrated PDD: Titania and Bottom (wearing an ass's head) in Balanchine's Midsummer Night's Dream, which is coming up here in San Francisco. And Natalia Osipova is coming as a guest for Swan Lake later on. Woo-hoo!

The viola solo of this pas de deux makes me want to swtich from violin to viola. Delibes is insanely good at making dreamy, glittery, magical melodies. Simply gorgeous, immense yet personal, vulnerable in the most beautiful and valuable way possible. And gee does Marianela and Vadim make the steps and the music that much justice, otherwordly performance T-T❤

Hiii! This is unrelated to the video but I have a video suggestion! I was recently rewatching one of your older videos where you compared the two different Black Swan variations. It got me thinking that there are also two different Cupid variations, the one we all know in the full length ballet but also the Cuban Cupid variation which I've only seen performed at competions (my personal favorite tbh). I can't find any backstory of how this variation came about so I was wondering if you could make a video on comparing the two?

Oh How much I loved this commentary! Discovered so many new details! I agree with everything you two pointed out and would like to share a few more elements that spoke to me.
The way Vadim offers her his hand: I chose you!
Their synchronicity: I forgive you. We are in this together, this is our journey. No remorse, no regret, no resentment.
The characters are proud of themselves, sharing their successful journey as a couple.
The way Nela rests her head on Vadim's shoulder after the Rond de jambe: I trust you!
The last lift, looking in opposite direction, one up, one down: We may have our differences, our love for each other only grew stronger. This is us!
Thank you so much for bringing this Pas de deux into the spotlight. I will watch again with a new and refreshed appreciation :)

However, by watching so closely, I can also see how much strength they need to pull off the movements. When he is walking her around in a circle, the tension between their arms is enormous. And at the beginning of the pdd, I saw her leg wobble, just for a moment. Somehow, I don’t think of these incredible athletes as having any weaknesses. 🤷‍♀️😄

Finally getting to it. I actually have watched act 3 the least out of all the ballet, because I watched Act 1 particularly, and a bit of act 2 over and over again.
Also it's strange seeing Nela as Swanhilda and Vadim as Franz, as my go to is a different Royal Ballet recording with Leanne Benjamin and Carlos Acosta. Actually, Nela is in the corps in that one. Even I didn't appreciate it enough. This was INCREDIBLE. Thank god we're going back to me being on Central because of daylights savings and it will be easier to watch live.
Though I've moved it a bit further back in my plans, someday I want to write a Sci-Fi retelling of Coppelia.

Your explanations of Swan Lake and other ballets made the dancing seem so much more accessible, so I’m taking my husband on a date to see The Picture of Dorian Gray. @@oxoelfoxothanks for asking-it was so good! There was a surprising amount of contemporary dance to it. It had a cabaret/burlesque theme-the women were all in corsets and patterned black tights and the men were in vests, and they leaned hard into the seductive and queer elements of the novel. Definitely an adult themed production, lol, but a really fascinating take on the book. I’ve watched enough of channels like Ballet Reign and enough Royal Ballet shows now that some of the dancing seemed a little amateurish in comparison (the choreography was great, and some of the lifts and men’s jumps were fantastic-it just didn’t have as much of the impressive technique stuff from the women that I was hoping to see), but I live in a small city, so it’s not a big or well-funded company, so it’s probably expected. They did a fantastic job with what they’ve got. I loved the whole experience, and so did my husband, and we’re definitely going again! 😊

A 1990 production of Coppelia by the Aus Ballet featured this pas de deux and the choreographer was listed as Marius Petipa, however Enrico Cecchetti is commonly listed as a revisionist of the original choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon. I would most likely think Cecchetti is responsible for this particular piece.

@@oxoelfoxo pas de deux is pronounced : pa (a like in Las Vegas or marijuana), de deux (the sound de or deux is almost the same like in the name maDEline) I tried to find a good exemple but it is not really an "English" sound ! If you type "pronunciation pas de deux" on internet, you will find a video with it !
