It really worked for me. I installed windows 10 on pcie nvme drive then I used clover on stick usb made with rufus as non-bootable gpt partition. Very nive tutorial!
Took me a long time to figure out, but installations won't show up in Clover if the disk they are is MBR. After successfully converting the relevant drive to GPT using mbr2gpt (having needed to delete linux partitions from it first), this worked like a charm. Didn't need to install a non-stock BIOS, the whole thing just boots off an NVME. Doing this also freed up the SATA power and data connections so that I can now have 6 16TB disk connected to a mobo from 12 years ago :D
@@tuxhardware P8Z77-V LK, with a 3570k. Theoretically one could mod the bios and not require the USB stick. But this Clover solution is better for me, as I had too much riding on not bricking the system as it is my main NAS that stores everything precious and also has some timely rsync'ing/scraping/mass video compression/OpenAI whisper running duties. Upgrading from 3 disks to 6 at the same time while upgrading a 512GB SATA SSD to a 1TB NVME that got freed up from another upgrade. Windows Storage Spaces with parity, and Backblaze to back it all up to cloud, which actually works even up to tens of terabytes, and I got to test restoring 3TB's I accidentally deleted a few days ago. A few other reasons too I'm running it as windows and this unusual setup does make sense for me even though it wouldn't be the first idea that comes to mind for many 😄Of course ZFS was faster in all benchmarks when I quickly tested it too. Used my old Define R3 case that fits the disks without a problem. Satisfying to actually get to use almost all of those snap-on disk trays that few ever use.
thank you brotha for the awesome video. It was simple and easy to follow even with no audio which i prefer. That way I dont have to listen to some voice give me instructions. Greetings. To boot Clover, the bios firmware must read it. On old hardware, the bios firmware doesn't have the proper driver to do so. You need clover on a disk that the bios have the driver to "talk" to the hardware. If old bios could boot clover from the nvme ssd, there would be no need to use clover, since you could boot the operacional system as well. But you can install clover on a sata ssd or hdd. Did usb with rufus on Windows. Never got into Clover. As you suggest non bootable format is not surprising. The config.plist file has a link to DTD. However no internet yet during boot. Thanks for interesting video. I have a question. Do most Linux OS support the "NVME to PCIE Adapter card" and able to recognize a NVME SSD connected to it either as a "bootable drive" and/or a simple "storage drive"? Or is there extra steps I need to do? Example: Is there special unofficial driver I need to download and install before the NVME SSD is recognized by the Linux OS?
Greetings and thanks for your comment. As far as I know, most Linux Kernel have the drivers to "talk" to the adapter, but I can't guarantee. If your Linux distro is up to date, it will recognize the SSD. I have several adapters, and never have any issues with POP OS, Arch and Solus. The "bootable drive" thing is different. Linux Boot loader doesn't have, on it's own, NVME support. It relies on motherboard firmware to complete the boot. If your motherboard doesn't have it, no boot. even if you add a grub entry, it will "talk" to the NVME SSD. If you can help the channel, please subscribe and hit the like button.

Hey i hadn't considered putting Clover or the closely related rEFInd on a USB drive. That may just be very useful. Is there any other ways to add an NVMe boot Option ROM that would chain to the BIOS in a PC? It stands to reason that there should be possible to manufacture an NVMe adapter card which is also a Boot Option ROM. Remember when you installed an Adaptec or whatever IDE/SCSI/SATA card in your PC, it came with a ROM chip that attached to your BIOS and allowed booting from the card. Or even Ethernet cards with a ROM Chip also Boot Option ROM to allow PXE Boot. Remember?

Greetings, Gianluca. Thanks for your comment. I am sorry it didn't work. There can be many reasons why you couldn't make it work. You mobo may not have UEFI, your Windows was incorrectly cloned/installed, and so on.
I'm sorry, but I'm an Arab person, so I can't read the texts written inside the video, but I have a question for you. Does the video talk about how to run Windows on an M.2 installed in the motherboard using an adapter through the pcle slot? I hope you know me so I can translate it and listen to it in full. ❤
@Firewaterwater Thank you for your response, but does the video speak to devices that do not support M.2? I have a Dell Optiplex 7010. Will the method in the video work for it?
@@ahmedrady6240 Yes, the video is to help people that want to install a NVME in a motherboard that does not have an NVME/M2 slot. In that case, your motherboard must have at least one slot PCI-e x4 or x16 available, so you can buy an adapter. Basically you plug the NVME disk into the adapter, and this adapter goes to one available PCIe slot.
@@ahmedrady6240 Sorry, but I could not understand very well what you meant. But I´ll try to answer as best as I can. First you need to install the NVME disk in one available PCIe slot, using an adapter card, as shown in the beginning of this video. Then you must install Windows into this NVME disk, using a bootable Windows pendrive. After this installation is done, you must prepare another pen drive, this time with the clover boot software. Unfortunatelly, this is not a trivial task. There are many steps, and they are not very easy to carry out, if you are not used to work with this things.

Salve Evandro. Eu tenho um projeto similar ainda em fase de planejamento para uma abit i-45cv. Second its how do you install windows on your nvme? Do you install it before install clover or after clover?
Greetings and thanks for subscribing. Cound't find the service manual. So, I can not be more accurate. First question answer: In theory, it is possible. But, the space for the adapter and the SSD must be considered. I can't assure it will fit. If it fits, then you must see how to prevent any loose connections, since you maybe can't pin the ssd. (I am not sure if this make sense in english language). Second question answer: You can boot with windows installer. When the system asks to restart the first time, insert clover stick, boot Clover and then, windows, to resume the installation. Test clover usb stick before install windows. Any doubts, post here. Best regards.

@@tuxhardware Oh, nevermind. I already solved the issue. When I installed a new windows to my NVME, my SATA ssd was still plugged in, and the EFI (I just learned about this) was located in the SATA ssd. So the Windows installer thought that addding a new EFI partition in the NVME is not needed. To boot, my computer needs to read the EFI first, which was not present in my NVME.

@@tuxhardware Im looking forward to it. Im currently caught in the middle of the same problem: legacy bios + new nvme ssd in axagon adapter in pcie-x4 slot.

@@tuxhardware Awesome! I'm also progressing, just found out, as you write, that I can use 3rd party bootloader like Clover or rEFInd (The amount of knowledge and software Rod W. Smith provides is incredible, truly a giga chad), so I'm working my way through them.
Also found out that I luckily picked samsung 950 Pro which has some "option ROM" feature, that should enable booting in legacy even without using Clover etc. We will see how that goes.
@@tomasjedlicka7102 Some Samsung NVME SSDs have a firmware that "talks" to the legacy Bios firmware without the nvme protocol, doing basically the same that clover does.
I have a question, is there a way to keep that option permanently? in Windows so that it continues to start from the NVrem without the need for the CLOVER usb and without the other hard drive?
Greetings and thanks for subscribe. As far as I know, you will need at least one bootable drive. You can't start Clover if it is installed on the NVME SSD, just because the BIOS firmware can't read anything there.
I don't really want Windows on the back burner, however Linux deserves to be more of a priority.
Greetings, Jerry. English is not my native language. I am not sure about what you mean. Can you explain it better?
@@tuxhardware he means when your machine is old installing Linux is a better idea which I don't really agree with, if you like it sure but it's not very user friendly so for most users Windows is better, and it can absolutely run well on old systems, even Windows 11, thanks to SSDs.
@@Zebra_Paw Windows 11 running well on old Hardware? I don't think so. Only if by old you mean from 5 years ago. Do you think Windows 11 can be installed on the PC from this video (more than 10 years old) by an ordinary windows user? Anyway, thanks for the explanation.
@@tuxhardware on Microsoft's website you literally find a guide to bypass the need for Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, and there are videos that are like 5 minutes long and teach you how to add the registry keys from the Windows installer itself.
I run Windows 11 perfectly on my 2007 Dell Inspiron 1520, that's over 15 years old at this point. I was able to install all the drivers and everything!
@SpatialZebra I didn't say it was impossible, just the ordinary windows user can't. After 2 years it was released, windows 10 still has more instalations every day than windows 11. Why? Because it's easy for ordinary windows user.

Remember?
Greetings, Siana. There are a few more ways to boot an NVME SSD on mobos without firmware support. This one in the video is the easiest by far. I intend to bring more content like this in a near future. But right now, I have over 100 videos in different editing stages that I need to finish before go on. So the Windows installer thought that addding a new EFI partition in the NVME is not needed. To boot, my computer needs to read the EFI first, which was not present in my NVME. After knowing about this, I reinstall the Windows without the SATA ssd plugged in, and Windows automatically made a EFI partition in NVME. I'm so happy right now. I appreciate all your help.
@@streyngthz Thanks. I will try to replicate it in the future.
Hey I'm Interested about make bootable NVME to get Windows 10, So can my motherboard support? H81M-K UEFI Support? I'm sure hope answred.
Greetings, Michael. I also hope you subscribe the channel. According to your motherboard's manual (dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/H81M-K/E8601_H81M-K.pdf?model=H81M-K), it does support UEFI. In theory, Clover will work.
@@tuxhardware So, how about you using NVMe adapter as long safe until now, is nvme adapter still safe? Do NVMe adapter still like normal?
@@tuxhardwareYes I subscribe, I wait for Life nvme adapter
@@michaelsiregar8717 Michael, English is not my native language. I didn't understand this part "as long safe until now, is nvme adapter still safe". NVMe SSD will only work on your motherboard with an adapter. If you have a graphics card, the x16 PCIe and first x1 PCIe slots will be unavailable. The NVMe adapter must fit the second x1 slot.

Hi Bro.
I have a problem booting on pcie adaper. no boot on bios. Can i follow your video? i mean it surely works? Thank you

How do you call the video for old motherboards and then in the video say for uefi bios only??? Clickbait…
Dear Matthew, the mobo from this video was manufactured around 2012. It has more than 10 years. From my point of view, it is an old motherboard. If you don’t think that way, it’s your point of view. Also, I never said on every old motherboard. There is a limited number of words that can be placed (thumbnail and title). Right in the beginning, I say it’s for UEFI only. Please, don't waste my time, I am a very busy man. If you think this is a “Clickbait” video, just report it to RUclips.
@@tuxhardware Ok, so at the start of the video you mention it’s for uefi boards…NOWHERE in your title or description do you mention uefi….But make excuses that you don’t have any room, even though you have more than enough to fit one little word….And while you’re at it…look up clickbait in the dictionary…
@@tuxhardware And if it runs the current windows operating system….its not an OLD motherboards….
