  • Sam and Dr. Tom discuss the context to one of the most famous verses in the Bible-John 3:16. In this epic conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, Yeshua compares Himself to the Old Testament story of the snake that saved the Israelites in the wilderness, and Tom unpacks the deep significance. Count how many times Sam says, "wow" and watch as Nicodemus and Matthew are forced to count the cost.

I noticed in that last scene the different reaction of Mary from the other disciples. She who had lapsed in her Jewish faith and had been delivered of much was excited and happy for Matthew that Jesus was calling him. Contrast that with the others who had been always practicing their Judaism who were unhappy and a little angry that Jesus would call Matthew. They thought they were better than him. It reminds me of that scripture which says he who has been forgiven much, loves much.

I don't think it has something to do with Judaism.... It's something to do with what Matthew had done, which was betraying his own people by working with their enemies, which were the romans by putting burden to them with the taxation, people were dying with oppression and taxation....

Given the portrayal of Matthew and his nervous inability to look at people when in conversation, the way he looks directly and determinedly at the eyes of Gaius without breaking glance, really shows his absolute conviction.

True story of The Chosen. The scene where Nicodemus kisses Jesus' hand was so beautiful I had to look up the scripture that Nicodemus was quoting...When I found it I realized that Jesus' response was the 2nd half of the same verse! I read it over and over and just saw a legalistic response from Nicodemus and a grace response from Jesus' kingdom all in Psalm 2:12 as the writers portrayed this interaction.

The genius of the scriptwriter includes synchronizing Matthew's question "you want me to follow you?" with Peter's question "do you even know what he's done?". Then Jesus answers YES just once, which fits beautifully as His answer to both of them simultaneously!

This is one of the top episodes in the series. I love how Gaius delivers his lines after Matthew leaves the cage (What are you doing? Where do you think you're going?) and the expression on his face. Rather than being angry or showing authority, he appears dumbfounded, unable to process what is happening, which makes the scene more moving and realistic to me. Shortly later at 27:22, he says "You will regret this, Matthew." There is a slight pause before he says Matthew's name, and the first time I heard that line, I thought Gaius was directing the line to Jesus as a subtle threat. Even though the statement was directed to Matthew, I thought maybe Gaius' delivery of the line was being used to foreshadow the perils to Jesus in the future with that slight pause. I may be reading more into it than was intended, but an awesome scene regardless!

Wow, I feel like I've just been to church!! Thanks to the Grafted team, for another awesome reaction video. This just happens to be 2 of my favorites scenes! Something I thought of while watching. When Jesus called Nicodemus, he had hesitations, not about following Jesus, but about all he would have to give up or change. Matthew on the other hand, all Jesus had to do was give him that look, and he was on his way out the door! I think it's important that we don't let 'things' or even people get such a hold on us that we can't be willing to pick up and 'follow Jesus'. It might not be to go to a foreign land and be a missionary, it could be something as simple as getting involved in a particular ministry in the church. Serve God in some way. There's something all of us can do, we just have to be willing to!

After Peter said ¨Depart from me... You don´t know what i have done....¨ Now he says about Matthew.. ¨Do you have any idea what this guy has done !???¨ Isn´t that like us... We forget what we have done and see what we think is probably a bigger sin in someone else and maybe think this one could should never be called to serve the Lord. I also love how the Matthew´s face is framed by the cage... Also after Peter asks the question ¨Do you have any idea what this guy has done ?¨ Matthew had also asked a question: ¨You want ME to follow You ? ¨ And so Jesus answering both questions at the same time... ¨YES ! )

Since you brought it up, I wanted to share my theory on Gaius' "identity"
    Possible spoilers below:
So, a big theme of the show is taking encounters we see in the bible (Matthew, Nicodemus) and showing their story before their encounter. Of the Roman guards, there are two Roman guards we know of who recognize who Yeshua was. The centurion who astounded Yeshua with his faith, whose backstory as given in the Bible does not match Gaius (paying for the Synagogue, deep understanding of Jewish customs), but now consider the centurion at the cross.
"And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Yeshua, saw how he died, he said, 'Surely this man was the Son of God!'" Mark 15:39
Considering this was the man who helped nail him to the cross, and wagered for his clothes, and someone who didn't even follow the Jewish faith, this is an astounding claim, and what would lead up to it.
In the Passion of the Christ he was combined with the man who's ear was cut and healed, but consider, what if it was Gaius, completing his faith journey!
Why I think the writers are setting this up:
    1. The next episode he says he is not a centurion, and Matthew says Gaius will do fine without him. I think this could foreshadow another promotion in his future, to a centurion.
    2. Season 2 shows Yeshua has some interest in speaking more with Gaius.
    3. We've had people come to know Yeshua in one scene, one episode, or multiple episodes. I think it would emphasize the show's themes to also include a series long conversion story arc.
    4. And lastly, while I don't know the plans for the last season, I think it would be an awesome role reversal to have Matthew questioning how the messiah could die, even question if Yeshua was the one, only to have Gaius want to learn everything he can about the promised messiah, even though he's now dead and many people believe will it wasn't him for the next couple of days.
Curious if you guys, in thinking about Gaius' journey, considered this yet.
I'm also a Jewish believer, and appreciate you brining a Messianic insight to this show. Keep up the great work!

Yes, I have Giaus pegged for the Roman soldier who acknowledges at the cross that Jesus must be the son of God. There are one or two Giaus' in the New Testament, so if The Chosen is going to carry on into the book of Acts then our Giaus may still be around.

Beloved servants, Sam and Dr. Tom, like so many others, I really appreciate your insights; specifically concerning the parallel of lifting up the cursed serpent for healing and the Son of Man being lifted up. It immediately reminded me of the scripture "cursed is the man who hangs on a tree" (Deut 21:23) which Nicodemus would have known. And so Yeshua was, by man, cursed- which led me to Is 53:3- despised and rejected... but then... "we turned our backs on him and looked the other way". Again, Nicodemus would have known this scripture...
A great portrayal of his beginning to understand "looking away" is the sin and looking upon Him, will be his salvation.
Toda raba for His Word, and your sharing of insights, studying and teaching. Blessings always and Shabbat Shalom, albeit a few hours early ;)

When it says unless one be born of water and spirit. He means literally born of water from the mother's womb. Not baptism from water which countless have misinterpreted. It's really a common misconception because if you dive into the scriptures you become confused and ask but then why does it then say you need to have a relationship with Christ and be born again only? And also John the Baptist says he baptises with water but one will come who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. Baptism of water is recommended but if you are born again and let's say you die without getting baptized, does it mean you're going to hell? No!! We know about the nephilipm (hybrid creatures) were born in a way that is an abomination to God, so it could be (this is just my speculation) that the reason why Jesus our Lord emphasized that is because there are those who aren't born fully human.

Scenes like this help to visualize and realize we serve a PERSONAL God not one we have to scramble after to earn favor with. He meets us face to face. I think that is what is often missed in reading words, not that the Words do not have power, they do of course. It’s realizing Yeshua was God in flesh, that had we faced God face to face without Christ as the son-glasses, we surely would have died at the sight of the Most High. However, God being so personal with us, did not want that divide any longer and came to clear the books, clear the debt, renew our spirit with new life and draw us close to Him. I love how personal Yeshua is in this scene with Nicodemus, because that is the personal God we serve. We fall to our feet in awe and shame, Yeshua raises our eyes to Him and instead of condemnation, He bids us to “Rise”. What a loving King.

I believe this show is saved for a time like this for a very good reason. So many movies about Jesus but nothing like this. I have never watched anything like this. Everyone knows that for all believers, this show strengthens each and everyone of our faith. Tears roll down like streams of living water. Inside my deepest heart, I think we are being prepped for His return. Maranatha, our King.

This is the most beautiful scene in the whole production of the Chosen. Everytime I watch this scene I get very emotional. This scene is the foundation of my salvation

Its really important that we know how to rightfully divide the word of God because when Jesus was alive His teachings are more focus on the lost sheep of Israel but when Jesus died and rose again. It opens up the mystery of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ through Paul. Now as a gentile, we have salvation through Jesus Christ.
    Ephesians 3:8-9
    8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

I was asking God about the bronze serpent the other day. I thought, like you did, that the snake is representative of sin and not of God and I asked Holy Spirit, how does that work? Of all the symbols He could have told Moses use, why a snake, the symbol of evil??? He reminded me that Christ, Who knew no sin, BECAME SIN for us. That serpent was pointing to the fact that Christ would become sin for us and so carry our death sentence, but because He is the Son of God and did not sin while taking on the form of a man, He could defeat both sin and death and rise from the grave. It wasn't the serpent itself that healed the Israelites, it was them looking to the perfect sacrifice that God saw symbolized in that bronze serpent. His perfect, only begotten Son, becoming sin for us and conquering death.

Matthew is by far my favorite. I have heard people say, Matthew was a really bad guy. But everyone forgets that he gave up everything, all of his riches, to follow Jesus, and live in poverty. He did the thing that Nicodemus could not.

18:37 Although the kiss the Son is not biblical but it does point to Judas in contrast of kissing the Son in betrayal. So Nicodemus action of using Psalm 2:12 is a prophecy of what happened in Gethsemane - kissing the Son.

It's really pretty crazy, isn't it, to think of being a regular person who then recognizes that Jesus in the flesh was God. It was a huge claim that Jesus made and since I've been a Christian since childhood I can retroactively recognize how difficult it would have been for people then, and for people now, to really understand the truth of it. The bible helps a lot to tell the truth.

That’s an interesting view of why Jesus mentioned the serpent on the pole of Moses but I’ve read that it also meant that Jesus compares Himself to the serpent which relates to the cross and this serpent thing is known to be the most cursed thing on earth. Jesus is saying He is taking the curse of sin upon and into Himself for us so that we could be clean/pure/righteous when we look to Him, believe and love Him for salvation so that we would not be bitten by the serpent “satan/sin”. Scripture tells us that Jesus bore the curse/sin upon Himself on the cross when He was lifted up. Even more so, we read that Jesus was given a crown of thorns on His head for which He was being mocked about being King of the Jews. Thorns also represent sin and the curse. Especially when we read in Genesis that after Adam and Eve sinned, thorns came forth from the creation which was because of sin. The crown of thorns was a representation of Jesus bearing the curse upon Himself for us in our place! Love God so much for what He did for us! No greater love!

What do you say about a pride flag being shown on the set? Is this right? If they go woke and support gay pride I will boycott this show no matter how much I love the chosen. This is an abomination against God!😢

FYI ...'fully God and fully man' is not biblical. What is biblical is "For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus," I Tim. 2:5 Jesus is my Lord-My Bother- The Second Adam-the Only Begotten Son of God. Yet there is ONLY One God -and the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ -and He is Supreme in All Sovereign Authority. (consider what I say and may the Lord give you understanding in all things)

But you men are touching my heart and your insights into The Chosen episodes are entertaining but also TEACHING me in a way my teachers did not! You are my favorite reaction videos and since I am a huge Chosen watcher, I am listening to every comment and conversation yyhave in relation to the show. And your devotion to Jesus is contagious and fervent. You and the show are guiding me to the gospels and scripture. Thank you and God our Father bless you and keep you.
