Likewise, Strasbourg is the main seat of the European Parliament because it has an hemicycle large enough that was basically unoccupied most of the time (the Council of Europe's assembly, who don't meet that often). It's still there because the French get pissy when you talk about moving it to Brussels (even though that's where most of Parliament's work is done).

Europe will never be the US, even if it federalized it will be a lose federalization and national identities will be kept, it would be a lot more similar to a very strong alliance rather than federalization, also I doubt militaries would fully unite (at least France would not let its fully army unite), a EU army would be a additional section of most nations militaries.

On a positive side, though, the older folks were primarily leave voters, whereas younger people were comparatively more remain. This means that the simple flow of time alongside a more pro europe government favours the rejoin side far more than the leave side, add to that the fact that brexit regret has apparently already been on the rise and it is only a matter of time until the UK undoes this shit stain of a policy and fully rejoins the EU
