I own this jacket. The only one I hiked with in 2019, great for ultra light back packing. Got on sale from REI in march on their anniversary sale. $230. It's worth it!!!
This will be my 3rd fall/winter w the micro, it lost a noticeable amount of loft over time and of course the DWR was shot long ago. I gave it a warm soak in dr bronners, hand washed & rinsed it, and sprayed it with a few coats of nikwax from REI. The wash and dry puffed it right back up, and the DWR is back to new, or better. The macro I ordered last week should be here shortly, it’ll be interesting to compare/contrast the two
Excellent review, camera work and video editing. Good shot of the novel Pluma Fill synthetic insulation, something other RUclips reviews omitted. Thanks, especially for the real world winter shots and the intelligent layering demonstration.
I have the Nano Puff, which is pretty much the warmer version of this and it’s similar in warmth to a thick hoodie. It’s designed for ultra light backpackers. It’s great because it’s lightweight and can be packed into its own pocket and turned into a small pillow. Great as a backup jacket for those just Incase situations. There are many “off brand” jackets that are similar for a fraction of the price. I have a UNIQCLO that works pretty much the same. Doesn’t feel as soft and the zipper kinda sucks but for the money, it’s fine.
I love mine too! I’m a vegan so this is a great option using synthetic material. I plan to get a Gortex shell jacket and use this Patagonia puff as my main mid layer for mountaineering.
I wouldn't like the hoody but I wear my Micro Puff almost every day. With both a moisture-wicking sleeveless tee and long-sleeve shirt the Puff will keep me warm "enough" temps above about 35 degs. while riding my ebike at between 15 to 25 mph. They pack down well, wear comfortably, have zip pockets that can add additional warmth... if you aren't riding a bike anyway. The hood would be great in the right situations but unless it is removable it would be in the way for me most of the time. They do need a rain skin of some kind... you don't want them to absorb much water. They may be better than down but they aren't magic, keep it dry and it will keep you warm.
Let me tell you something if u are watching this video to buy it: If you are buying the MICRO PUFF for autumn or cold summer nights or maybe to go climbing, its nice. But believe me , do not try the MICRO PUFF in winter time. If you are looking for a warm jacket for winter you should buy the DOWN SWEATER hoody jacket or the down hi loft hoody jacket. I bought the micro puff because it was the most expensive and thought it was better but boy I was wrong, go with the down jacket. I bought the down jacket 6 months ago and its great for winter

Good review and yes it's supposed to be the best synthetic insulation jacket on the market at the moment. One thing I don't think you mentioned though is that synthetic insulation in more fragile than down and typically only lasts for 1 - 3 seasons before a very noticeable reduction in heat retention. The fibers break quite easily compared to down and so lose their loft. Even though this insulation is great just keep that in mind. You can prolong the longevity by not packing it tightly and if you have it in a backpack keep it near top so it does not get crushed.
Great vid! I recently bought the latest version of this micro puff and look forward to trying it out in the winter! Could I ask what is the grey? fleece sweater that you are wearing in this video? Thanks 👍
That,s an novel theory you have there about the stitching patern. ( a 40 s ) : " it allows for heat to move freely within the jacket..." That,s the last thing you want from your insulation. What such a patern does; it reduces "cold bridges' between the inside and outside, improves the loft of the insulation and i can imagine it will improve movability of the jacket. But I don,t know the construction of the jacket. It is possible that there is a layer of insulation stitched to the outside and another layer is stitched to the inside. That will reduce 'cold bridges' to next to nothing , although where the filling is compressed by stitching, warmth will move freely (....)
Improving loft improves heat retention. I think you Do want the heat to move (rise) under the jacket... maybe not within the insulation itself but otherwise. Stay safe.
I purchased this coat. I am very satisfied. But I cant believe it is 2oz heavier t hgv an the EE torid or the MH ghost whisperer. But caught an REI sales and saved 80 bucks off retail. REI had this jacket in stock, the other two had to be ordered online . The higher front pockets to allow use with hip belt on is great. The two inside pockets are huge, gloves, beanie and maps fit well. The DWR finish and the new fill seem like a great match if it gets wet out while hiking. So far in past 30 days, it's a great jacket.
I’ll never pay that price. I have a UL down parka with a hood. It’s awesome. And yes I layer with it. Just beware it’s not a rain jacket, it’s water resistant. But I just layer on top with a bigger rain jacket. After that, it’s just a matter of taking care of the legs and feet.
Depends. If you are talking about walking out your front door every day and back in that night a down parka might be fine but it's a different story when you are living away from the house. A puff is way more functional than a parka year around.
I just bought a new one for $180 I had an old Nano puff that was really warm and wish I would have kept. The micro fiber feels so thin like a windbreaker.
