Right on freshaustino! Personally, I really like Paul's reviews, I look forward to them and they are generally the first thing I check out when I play my Guitar World cd when my issue is delivered. I think that Paul is a very solid guitarist who plays in many styles and explains the gear very well and does so with enthousiasm. I saw him being interviewed at Namm 2010 (I think it was with "The Tone King") and he sounds like a nice, very articulate and diplomatic guy. Keep practicing boys & girls!
i have just a regular dunlop fuzz face and to me it sounds just like him. Note: for a fuzz face work your volume as much as you can on the guitar (it's what jimi did). & yes a booster to break up the tubes will work. i break up the tubes on my JTM with a tube screamer & then turn on the fuzz face.
much as your comment is funny, it's also worth noting that hendrix era amps didn't have master volumes- so with the amp cranked everything was dirty...
That's meant to be there, it's a lubricant so that everything moves smoothly. My Cantrell wah had it in the same place. They all do so no need to worry.
I always put the wah after the fuzz and octavia, because otherwise the wah doesn't reveal its full potential, it gets sort of eaten by fuzz, to me it sounds way more richer when it goes after fuzz or overdrive
I just have to say that its rally great piece of music and this is the reason why I've it in my fav list awesome tune PAUL - guitar and pedals are nothing without good player :D
@CiviC092 Actually its a Rust. It's technically called a Rust Relic Stratocasters. You can google them, they're a part of 30th Street Guitars in NY. They are most definitely not cheap knockoffs though. They street for around $2000.
so true. im really happy i've run into someone like you because nowadays people try to turn music into a science when its really an art thats supposed to be used to for creative expression. not for club hits and all that mess
@hendrix7755 He actually said he wasn't allowed to, I think he can handle some Hendrix riffage. Or is that what you meant by saying he can't play them?
Its because the wah has a buffer and if the signal goes through the buffer first, it takes the dynamics away from the fuzz. Thats why it sounds better 1st
All of these negative comments are sad. If yall havent noticed, someone at Guitar World fucks up the audio. They have never really gotten it quite right. I'm sure it isn't Paul's fault the tone sounds so compressed and "metal", so quit hating on him. His playing is damn good and I'm sure he does the best he can.
@hendrix7755 yeah its really deep and throaty and i like that, the vox has a ton of ear splitting high end, like the kind of thing that you hear when hendrix plays live when he uses the wah as a boost haha
Judging from sound clips, i'm pretty much sure the octavio and the fuzz sound great, not sure about the wah, but, sorry, the tone in this demo really needs some serious improvement (i agree, there's somesing terribly wrong with the reverb, to start with) and the amps drive doesn't sound pleasing either - so it's hard to get a good picture of the pedals and their potential. But thanks for the effort!
@TheRealErob i think its like dunlop has the Jimi name trademarked as far as the pedals are concerned, but since this video is through guitarworld, i dont think they have the rights.
It is sold, because it's a CD-Rom that comes with the magazine. So legally speaking they are selling it and would have to be granted permission as well as waive all right to the song, register for writer credits and arrangement fees for a cover, so it would be a major pain in the ass to just ramble off a few riffs... But I agree they should just let him play it, it's a damn guitar demo for the artists pedals.
LOFL - "Uhh, I returned the amp back to it's nor... to the (pause) distorted setting" Jeez someone might wanna give the drive knob a rest!! Nice Star Spangled Banner Jimi Style clone.... the bombs crashing part! That was good.
i don't know if i'm going to get a octavio og an mxr dist+ please help me pepole? i play like..between hendrix and metallica if you can compere it in a way sorry for my bad english
It sounds kind of close. His playing isn't like Jimi totally...but he says he's not trying to, he was doing his best. Some of it sounded good when every pedal was turned on.
If this dude knew anything about hendrix, then he'd know that his best tone is with the wah pedal all the way toe down for the high frequency crying sound for soloing. I also love how his tone sounds nothing like jimi's- especially his dry channel.
You don't necessarily need "Hendrix" marketed products to get close to his tone. In fact, these pedals don't really sound much like Hendrix to me. The best thing you can do is try as much gear as you can until you find what works for you. I don't mean spend your life savings...but go to music stores with a good selection of gear and and try try try.
so here is a boutiqe setup for the real thing. RMC6 wah (vox clone). Roger Mayer Vision Octavia (hendrix had a tech guy, this is him). fulltone 70's (not to be used with the fuzz face, one or the other) and for fuzz I would say cats eye hop hed (vox/solasound tonebender MK II with an added knob) seriously though very few people are selling the real shit. you have to get a vintage 60's strat and lefty flip/ re-string. he used rosewood AND maple fretboard fenders I promise you these are the pedals
@hendrix7755 actually i have a v847 and im not very impressed with it, it doesnt have as big a sweep as the hendrix wah im gonna switch soon, still its probably more authentic hendrix
As long as you dont have a guitar with a reverse headstock or something, you shouldn't be ashamed for trying to be like him. Having the same sound is good, having the same looking guitar is a bit too much. Good luck! I'm a hendrix fan too!
I absolutely love this sound but is it the pedal or the guitar that is the determing the sound? This video made me completely unhappy with my guitar...
Man, I love how in most of his videos involving Hendrix Gear he plays a Fender Strat! I love the way they feel!
The radio frequencies thing is so dope!
Brilliant review mate, real authentic sound
Right on freshaustino! Personally, I really like Paul's reviews, I look forward to them and they are generally the first thing I check out when I play my Guitar World cd when my issue is delivered. Speechless, even though you aren't aloud to play exact Hendrix, you did well. I alway like you playing, keep it up dude.
i have just a regular dunlop fuzz face and to me it sounds just like him. Note: for a fuzz face work your volume as much as you can on the guitar (it's what jimi did). & yes a booster to break up the tubes will work. i break up the tubes on my JTM with a tube screamer & then turn on the fuzz face.

I liked this guys playin sounded real funky
Always a great review. .
That's meant to be there, it's a lubricant so that everything moves smoothly. My Cantrell wah had it in the same place. They all do so no need to worry.
Fuzz face is ****** awesome! When he played it with clean signal it was best :D
Fantastic tone dude!
I always put the wah after the fuzz and octavia, because otherwise the wah doesn't reveal its full potential, it gets sort of eaten by fuzz, to me it sounds way more richer when it goes after fuzz or overdrive
paul is using his own amp i think ... i ve read somewhere, that he used a modded jcm800...but i'm not sure...
sick sound anyway ! love it
I love those two notes starting at 4:23
the octave thing sounds insane
I just have to say that its rally great piece of music and this is the reason why I've it in my fav list
awesome tune PAUL - guitar and pedals are nothing without good player :D
his awesome playing would make someone want to buy those pedals, hendrix fan or not!
Strat + overdrive + octaver + fuzzface = epic win
@CiviC092 Actually its a Rust. It's technically called a Rust Relic Stratocasters. You can google them, they're a part of 30th Street Guitars in NY.
They are most definitely not cheap knockoffs though. They street for around $2000.
Man...this guy can play any style that can be named Im sure!
I think this demo is very good, no problem with it. The dunlop jh-f1 fuzzface is one of the best out there.
so true. im really happy i've run into someone like you because nowadays people try to turn music into a science when its really an art thats supposed to be used to for creative expression. not for club hits and all that mess
@hendrix7755

Its because the wah has a buffer and if the signal goes through the buffer first, it takes the dynamics away from the fuzz. Thats why it sounds better 1st
Wow I like his tone this time. I wonder what amp he uses. It doesnt sound like a 1959.
All of these negative comments are sad. If yall havent noticed, someone at Guitar World fucks up the audio. They have never really gotten it quite right. I'm sure it isn't Paul's fault the tone sounds so compressed and "metal", so quit hating on him. His playing is damn good and I'm sure he does the best he can.

search it on RUclips. Hendrix used it a lot. Watch Hendrix's star spangled banner at woodstock. He used it there.
what amps do guitar world run all these demo's through? I've always wanted to know
He used a modified version of the normal Crybaby. Which was then fine tuned and transformed into the Signature Hendrix Crybaby Wah.
Which is better Big muff pi, little or big muf whit the big muff tone wicker? not know which to buy!
@jacobtheguitarfreak i couldnt agree more pauls a great guitarist
@TheRealErob i think its like dunlop has the Jimi name trademarked as far as the pedals are concerned, but since this video is through guitarworld, i dont think they have the rights.
go for either the MXR classic fuzz or the analogman sunface then. both are great
paul, i don't think that hendrix has copyrighted his tone. you won't get sued if you turn your mids up and your gain down.
Paul's sound is so stuck in the 80s/90s... Couldn't have been much LESS Hendrix-y. Great for some things, but terrible for others.
if you wanna replicate an octavia sound, build a green ringer octave and add a 100k pot that varies the output level of the effect
i'm looking for a distortion pedal which is alot more gainy than my MG15CD but still as clear how much (in pounds) would that cost?
Hey, where is the Univibe section? as well as the Univibe expression pedal?
radio signals? that's kick ass!
@hendrix7755 vox is the hendrix's wah
damn paul moves his head up and down a lot.
It is sold, because it's a CD-Rom that comes with the magazine. Cool. I like it better when you really just go for it. Good one.
what pickups are you using in this guitar?
@TheMaersk12 true i have the standerd crybabay and there re-isue fuzzface bc108s but jimi used the vox :p
exactly wat i was gona say, nota good thing to have played thru a metal amp
no input jack ?
then where does this thing jack to ?
that may be the coolest guitar ever. he called it a strat but it looks a bit different, anyone have any idea what that really is?
i don't know if i'm going to get a octavio og an mxr dist+
please help me pepole? i play like..between hendrix and metallica if you can compere it in a way
sorry for my bad english
@TheMaersk12 vox made the wah that hendrix actually used that why they suggested vox should have made this wah
didn't hendrix use a uni-vibe pedal also?
It sounds kind of close. His playing isn't like Jimi totally...but he says he's not trying to, he was doing his best. Some of it sounded good when every pedal was turned on.
Hendrix said that Crybaby was the best wah. He said it sounds the most like a singer. He told that to Micheal Bloomfield later in his career.
@Bluesguitar247 Sure man, what are some of your tips?
@starassist1977 It is a ESP I think or maybe a Vintage.
If this dude knew anything about hendrix, then he'd know that his best tone is with the wah pedal all the way toe down for the high frequency crying sound for soloing. I also love how his tone sounds nothing like jimi's- especially his dry channel.
Maybe Road Worn series, or a Special Series.
yeah i heard it on UG. i sure hope its not a scam.
where do they get this guy?
yea man u got the ole jh-1 dats the jh-2 i think they stopped production i hav a jh-1 too man good stuff good stuff!!!
the white stuff on the wah is grease. White lithium grease looks like white pasty stuff
god damn i love that fuzz face!!!
NICE !!!
how much would these all cost in usd?
I ment the Fuzz ofcourse
It's a decent trem system that's all. It probably uses some kinda locking mechanism.
so, im guessing there's copyright on hendrix riffs?
what about the univibe?
Amen to that .......
That wah can talk!
He says it, but it is actually an ESP strat copy
Why is this Strat unfenderish?
@hendrix7755 vox and dunlop are the same wah
You don't necessarily need "Hendrix" marketed products to get close to his tone. In fact, these pedals don't really sound much like Hendrix to me. The best thing you can do is try as much gear as you can until you find what works for you. I don't mean spend your life savings...but go to music stores with a good selection of gear and and try try try.
Sorry, here's the real list:
Marshall 1959SLP 100Watt Super Lead Plexi Head
Marshall 1960A slant cab / 4x12
Marshall 1960 AC Vintage cab / 4x12
Fender Stratocaster reverse headstock guitar
Dallas Arbiter FuzzFace
Roger Mayer Octavia/Fuzz
Univox UniVibe
Vox v847 Wah
Misc delay/reverse effects
Fender Rock n' Roll strings
Coily Cables
Yeah and the gain is two high have the gain about twelve to get Hendrix and treble at 1 and everything backed of from full
so here is a boutiqe setup for the real thing.
The Wah doesnt really react with his guitar. Maybe should have put the wah last in the effect chain..
how much does this set cost ???? (no, i m not buying it)
@hendrix7755 actually i have a v847 and im not very impressed with it, it doesnt have as big a sweep as the hendrix wah im gonna switch soon, still its probably more authentic hendrix
why does he play hendrix' songs in another video then?
Now you just need a Uni-Vibe and your all set.
the octavia is an octave fuzz. The dist + is a distortion. Why are you even comparing the two?
i would kill to have that tone at 4:15
As long as you dont have a guitar with a reverse headstock or something, you shouldn't be ashamed for trying to be like him. Having the same sound is good, having the same looking guitar is a bit too much. Good luck! I'm a hendrix fan too!
@jimimax6969 since you're typing in all caps you must be right, Mr. expert.
yeah
stop putting bad coments the dude says that he cant play hendrix riffs
A bit subtle?? A bit of crunch? You know a bit is an adjective meaning a small amount right?
I absolutely love this sound but is it the pedal or the guitar that is the determing the sound? This video made me completely unhappy with my guitar...
didnt hendrix use a vox wah
he's not using a strat he's using a ESP vintage guitar, you can tell by the headstock
@yojoe71 i would say he used Dunlops
Wow, that really was alot like hendrix, without acually playing any of his stuff
sorry man, but you dont have " a little bit of distortion" in your signal". The amp is really distorted.
what sort of strat is that?, obviously not fender
